Every tune on the CD is brilliant. This is a classic piece of Canadian music history... one of the best albums to come out of this country.... ever. I would place this up there with classic Canadian albums like Rush's Moving Pictures. The first track "All the Things I Wasn't" is beautiful beyond belief. This band truly had talent... get this album, it's perfect. Not an exaggeration.

5 out of 5 stars A classic piece of Canadiana.......2002-09-22

This is one of the definitive Canadian albums of the 80s. How can I define the sound? a cross between the Byrds and the Jayhawks, I guess. very acoustic, very melodic, and often sad. I don't think too many people would argue that this is the band's best work. It's the one that put them on the map anyway. Tracks 1, 2, and 3 are all stand-outs but really the whole album is pretty strong.

5 out of 5 stars Best damn break-up album...ever.......2000-06-12

Every song on this album is absolutely riviting. The first time I heard it I was a sophmore in college and I thought that it was a pretty good follow up to Treehouse, but a few weeks later came a disasterous break up with a long time boyfriend. After listening to this "cd" for about a week straight I was certain that someone had let all of the secrets out of my own soul and then put it to music.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Done.......2005-07-05

This group has such a unique energy. It's a little like REM, but really it's own sound. All the songs on the CD are very well produced, and I'm surprised this group hasn't had the commercial success it deserves.

2 out of 5 stars What the Hell?.......2004-03-21

When I first listened to "Now and Again," I thought it was one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Each song was worth listening to with a great hook. The band also have a great sound. So, I was excited to get "Treehouse," expecting at least some of the greatness of "now and Again." I was disappointed. Gone are the hooks, the sound, or anything like "Now and Again." There a few good songs but overall it was just disappointing. If you want to get an album by Grapes of Wrath, pick up "Now and Again" not "Treehouse."

5 out of 5 stars Pure magic..........2003-06-17

Very few albums are close to perfect... but this is one of them. It's astonishing how much this band grew between their debut album and 'Treehouse'. As mentioned before, this is jangle-pop at its finest combined with gorgeous vocal harmonies. The three singles 'O Lucky Man', 'Backward Town' and especially 'Peace of Mind' are fine examples of this... but what pushes this album over the edge is the quality of the rest of the album... 'At Your Soul' is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard anywhere from any band. In my opinion, 'Treehouse' and 'Now & Again' are essential to any music collection. Check them out and get to know one of the most gifted bands ever to come out of Canada.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pop.......2001-04-25

I was lucky enough to see these guys in Athens,Georgia in late 1987. They opened for a band that was far less talented and played for a total of six people. The show was fantastic and the memory is still clear today. The catchy acoustic guitar and beautiful harmonies on this album are brilliant. It's a bit like R.E.M in their pop mode and a lot like the Gin Blossoms sound of their first album (although much better). It's a shame that these guys didn't tour more in the southern U.S. or get more radio play. They could have saved the world from the pop garbage that was out in the late 80's and early 90's.

5 out of 5 stars Jangley Pop Phenoms.......2000-08-31

this is a great album. the only thing i don't understand about this album is why track 8 is not listed. it is a 30 second long instrumental song. enjoy!

A beautifully emotional and stirring work taken from the movie. I absolutly love the music. The only downside to the CD is the interview with Maurice Jarre. I felt this last 10 minutes of the CD would have been better spent on music and not dialogue. Still, a very nice piece.

4 out of 5 stars An impressive comeback.......2003-06-17

I'm usually sceptical of comeback albums... in fact, I didn't even listen to this for months after I bought it. But after I got a bit tired of the old Grapes material, I gave this a try... and after a couple of spins, I was thoroughly impressed. Kane and Hooper are incredible songwriters (especially Kane). It's almost as if they never broke up... 'Field Trip' just seems like a logical follow-up to 'These Days'. It's a classic Grapes album with a mixture of harder rock (Black Eye) and softer acoustic (Kane's brilliant 'But Oh Well'). Hooper also shows off his songwriting prowess with infectious tunes like 'Sell the Goat' and 'Hitchhiker'. The bonus CD has some interesting material as well... the highlight being Kane's acoustic rendition of 'Misunderstanding'... reminiscent of the material on his solo albums (both of which are highly recommended). This album gets 4 stars only because 5 stars is reserved for the two perfect Grapes albums, 'Treehouse' and 'Now & Again'. Kane and Hooper... Canada's Lennon and McCartney?

3 out of 5 stars So nice they did it twice!.......2002-07-18

Look very carefully at the track listings for this CD. Notice that the first twelve titles are replicated as the second twelve titles? Think this is a typing error? THINK AGAIN!

While disk two is intended to be a 6-song EP (at least that's what the cover says), it's actually a replica of disk one. Bummer! What's going on here? Hard to complain, or even return. It is, after all, exactly what's advertized.

Apart from my feelings about being swindled, the 12 songs (on either disk) are hardly on par with earlier material. Hence, a double whammy. Save your money, and listen to their old stuff.

    5 out of 5 stars great album........2001-12-02

this really a great album. i was happy to hear tom & kevin reformed the grapes but, was sad that vince & chris weren't coming back. the more i listen the album the more i like. and some major news: apparently according the grapes fan site their record company went bankrupt and they've either broken up again or are just laying low for awhile.

    5 out of 5 stars A pop gem.......2001-07-24

This is one of the finest albums I have heard in recent years. The songwriting duties are shared by Kevin Kane and Tom Hooper and they are equally masterful at their craft. Hooper formed Ginger after Grapes broke up originally and this is the Grapes' comeback album and it doesn't disappoint.

"Black Eye" speeds out of the traps like a thunderbolt with thunderous guitar work and a Sloan-like sound.Hooper then weighs in with "Like a fool" a song that is equally good but not as loud.Kane then contributes "18" which is an absolute corker. The driving guitar and stunning chorus is quite breathtaking and for my money this is the best moment on the album. The quality control continues with "Sell the Goat" complete with its fabulous steel guitar and country-tinged sound. On "Rivers Flow" Kane sounds eerily like Paul McCartney and the song continues with some fine harmonies between Hooper and Kane."Dropping the Y" is pure Elliot Smith ,and that is not a bad thing ! The rest of the album carries on with the same quality control. All in all a magnificent effort which deserves to be a worldwide hit, this album has just the right mix of softness, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and harmony. The only thing I feel let down by is that the cd is supposed to come with a 5 song e.p. and it turns out that this is an exact clone of CD1 !!!! And I was so looking forward to hear Grapes' cover the excellent "Porpoise Song" (theme music to the film "Head").Ah well even with discovering this unfortunate error, I would still recommend this CD as the quality is excellent throughout ps. fans of this album should try and get their hands on Ginger's "Far Out" ,another magnificent set featuring Hooper.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little jewel from1991.......2005-02-01

Memories are what good recordings conjure up for us. Where were you when you first heard this song or what were you doing when it came out? For me when I first heard the single "You May Be Right" off this album by Canadians Grapes of Wrath, I thought what a great tune.

I still remember working in a newspaper darkroom in a small town in Espanola, Ont. listening to the local AM station and hearing more and more of this album over the radio.

I always found this album to have a nostaligic feel to it on three levels: I) The band I think was capturing the sound of a Beatles lp (my favourite band), II) it takes me back to that time when I was a young, aspiring, newspaper reporter and my first time away from home, III) for Canadians it contains the sounds of summer at the cottage [A good example being "A Fishing Tale"].

Amazingly I find that this album, years and years later (it was released in 1991), still sounds fresh. I particularly enjoy the lead guitar of Kevin Kane on this album.

This album contains a certain sentimentality and whistfulness, that I've enjoyed on may other artists' recordings, but the band doesn't really sound like any particular band per se (well except the Beatles, maybe). Many of these songs are in the vein of recollection and memory and longing maybe even for home. Titles like "Away", "I Can't Find My Home", "I'll Be There", and "I Am Here", all recall a location or place (in most cases "home") that the singer wants back to, and even the "love songs" conjure up the idea of "loss" or "getting things right" and then all will be well.

Unfortunately, I believe the band broke up shortly thereafter and never attained the quality that was evident on this recording.

This is a great cd from a band that i had never heard of before. Even if you haven't heard of these guys before, I hightly reccomend this cd for anyone. There guitars and vocals are good and the quality is perfect. They sound a lot like the Allman Brothers, specifically songs like Jessica, and many newer southern rock style bands. They also remind me of Phish, but they tend not to jam for more than a 30 seconds, which may be good, or bad, depending on your preference. Anyway, this cd has an excellent start and every song is impressive. I still have no other cd's by but I do now that you should buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Best effort so far..........2001-12-24

I've seen these guys many times, and while this studio effort is their best so far, you have to see them live to appreciate how good they can be. Sadly, those days are probably gone for good, unless Clinton brings them back later. "Gone Too Long" is wonderful, my personal fave...get it. Love it. OUT

      Album Description

Canadian pressing of the 1986 original release, is the acts first LP which shows a band unsure whether to follow R.E.M.'s folky lead or post-punk's dreamy abstraction. Fortunately, the jangly guitars and harmonies win out for a pleasing, though unspectacular, debut. Highlights include the single 'Misunderstanding', as well as 'Love Comes Around' and 'A Dream (About You)'. EMI. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars The classic Grapes.......2002-09-20

This is their classic and best. I've owned it on vinyl for about 15 years, and now have it on CD. Misunderstanding and Lay Out The Trap are from the 12" single, so you get good value, and they are the best songs too!!!!

Great Canadian Vancouver guitar pop/rock, and not overly whiney or grungey. Their later stuff is worth a listen, but downhill from SBOG.

5 out of 5 stars Punky and varied.......1998-11-17

This album, actually called 'September Bowl of Green', is a nice collection of various cuts from what was an up-and-coming band. Hard-edged in spots, it also showed signs of softness, especially in their instrumentals. Set the standard for their other albums.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to this virtually unknown composer.......2002-09-18

McKay was, for most of his adult life, professor of music at the University of Washington. He was the first graduate of the composition program at the Eastman School of Music and his teachers there were Christian Sinding and Selim Palmgren. He was an early teacher of William Bolcom.

The main performer on this disc is the eminent composer/pianist William Bolcom, who is involved in all the performances save that of the Viola Suite. And, of course, he is well-known for his way with a rag; all the better, then, that the first piece, cutely named 'Snickertyskip', comes on like something by Zez Confrey or Billy Mayerl. Indeed, most of the music here is fairly light in nature. And I must say that it also tends to be somewhat generic; character pieces like 'Storm Clouds' sound little like their titles to me. Nonetheless, this music is winning in its low-key, soft-spoken way. It seems, in retrospect, that the only piece that ventures for very long above a gentlemanly mezzo-forte is the Suite for Viola and Piano.

The first piece in 'An April Suite', called 'To the Blue Eyed Days of Spring,' is lushly romantic and stands out from the surrounding pieces by its delectable melodies and jazz-inflected harmonies.

The four songs sung by Bolcom's wife, Joan Morris, are unpretentious but telling. I was particularly moved by 'Every Flower That Ever Grew,' written near the end of McKay's life to an ancient Irish text. Morris's style, well-known from the 20 or more albums that she and her husband have recorded, is quite apt for these gentle, sometimes humorous, sometimes melancholy songs.

The Viola Suite, altogether stronger meat, with anger, irony, wit, near-resignation but ultimately resolute determination is convincingly played by Mahoko Eguchi, viola, and Sanford Margolis, piano.

Naxos is to be commended for their continuing series of recordings of virtually unknown music by American composers.
