A Master of the Harmonized Peyote Song.......2003-06-30

This is quite a good album. Delbert just keeps getting better. Delbert and Lorenzo are a fine harmony match. If you are not familiar with the harmonized Church songs, you could not get much better a start than here. My only caution is on the production end: its quite common to add too much reverb in Church albums, this one is better than many at this, but its sort of seems like an attempt is made to make it more "trance-like" for people not used to it. The true location for this type of music is, of course, a canvas tipi, which is an acoustically "dead" location. It has more of "house meeting" sound than I believe it should. The water drum should have a reverb sound, but not the voice and the gourd. Other than that it's well recorded.
The cover and inside art is way above average. The liner notes are not as helpful as they could be. The space spent on justifying the seriousness and legitimacy of the Native American Church is a bit old. My guess is there are two types of buyers for this album, those that know that stuff already and those who don't care. I'd like to see more space on things like telling the lyrics of English language songs, telling the language of origin of songs. Singers relation to songs (Mr. xxx taught this to me, this reminds me of xxxx, etc).
