1 out of 5 stars Neither Mexico nor Paraguay are in the Andes.......2007-03-21

The blurb inside starts "The Aztec empire and its many highly developed subject populations ..." However, the Aztecs were in Mexico and northern Central America, and had nothing to do with either the Andes or this CD.

The music (at least the first dozen tracks) is basicly Paraguayan harp music transferred to quena and charrango. Even El Condor Pasa is done in that style. Some of the last 10 tracks I won't make any bets where they came from, altho it's possible some are from Bolivia, particularly eastern Bolivia.

I suspect this CD (no date, no author, no musician, no composer listed) is comprised of two unnamed LPs. However, the entire track list matches 'Los Caballeros / Flute Music Of The Andes' (2006) and also 'Los Craneos, Juan Campolargo Ensemble / Flute Music Of The Andes' (no date) - from Gracenote's database of CD tracklists (formerly cddb). My guess is the latter is more likely where it came from.

(If you add two seconds between each track, it will be "seen" as a different CD by cddb because the total length and length of each track are different.)

However, speaking as someone who has a collection of around 400 Andean CDs (admittedly leaning toward northern Ecuador), I wouldn't really call it Andean music. If you like it, try collecting some Paraguayan harp music.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Andean Music!.......2007-03-18

Growing up in Chile, the music of the Andes was always in the background. This collection of songs takes me home. You can feel the wind, the chill, hear the birds, imagine the rain in these songs. Fantastic CD. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ALL YOU WILL EVER NEED ON YOUR JOURNEY.......2006-10-15

Okay, so Inti Illimani and WAyanay and INca SOn and the rest are like REALLY GREAT, but this is all you ever need

In fact, track nine Vasija de barro, is everything you ever want to hear for eternity

And even better if you know the words, and the guitar chords and hook. (pretty much Em, B7, Em, G, B7, Em, until the chorus goes to C, and then the cool guitar hook around the Em scale like HEndrix did)

This album really has just about every Inca song you need, including track nine it has Valicha and El Condor Pasa (yes, Paul Simon stole that one and put real dumb ENglish words to it, but here all three movements are included)

A fairly stripped down group of quena, bass, charango and drums, but that's all you need. All anonymous and the worst liner notes ever (calling it AZTEC music- please this is not MEXICO, dude) and no vocals except a few praises for fat hens and other extemporaneous rare exclamations, but nothing to get in the way. THis has the full spectrum of rhythms beats and traditions of Peru, BOlivia (except Zaya and the real urban stuff that would call for sax or trumpet, etc.) and Ecuador, but once again you have nothing but the accurate titles to go by.

Really, this is the only one you need, and it is cheap for being what this music always was: anonymous!

And the best thing is there are no cheesy Zamphir style remakes of American popular music of the seventies and eighties! NO KANSAS!

It's the entire Inca rainbow on one disc. Get it! be healed!

4 out of 5 stars Andean Flute Variety.......2006-07-09

I expected to get a CD of Andean flute music, which I greatly enjoyed hearing on local radio in South America. And this CD delivered! I don't listen to this CD as often as I expected to, probably owing to that it is a collection of different styles and formats rather than a continuous listening format.

I recommend this CD 4 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2004-01-17

The compositions herein are comparable to Beethoven in terms of their ability to evoke emotion. However, unlike Beethoven, they are simple and sublime and retain a close connection to nature that is characteristic of all Native American music. I especially like track #15 with its grave and intricate beauty. This is now my favorite song.

5 out of 5 stars Great sounds.......2007-02-24

I really enjoy the CD it is great music to listen to while driving to work. I plan on purchasing other CDs from this group.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh air!.......2007-02-22

Listening to this album makes me feel that delicious fresh air has entered my stuffy winter room! I guess that makes sense, considering the music is from the high Andes. Whooda thunk it? That music would carry the character of its area of origin... seriously it happens a lot. Neato.

Most of the cuts sound pretty much traditional, but there's a little well-done updating here and there; not enough to be offensive or take the performance out of the realm of representative folk, but enough to give a little kick. I really enjoy the sounds of the "quena" flute and "siku" panpipes, which to me give an otherworldly sound, enhanced by the various indigenous percussion instruments and the tinkling stringed "charango". Inkuyo's music renews my hope to travel to the Andes and quietly absorb the local culture.

5 out of 5 stars *BEST* Traditional Music CD of Andes/S.America/Incas.......2004-06-28

Heard Inkuyu's "Land of the Incas" in a "Natural Wonders" Store about 15 years ago and it has been my favorite CD of South America music ever since. The traditional instruments, rhythms and melodies are played with authenticity and joyful exuberance. The liner notes are superb for interpreting the history and origin of the songs. Truly ancient rituals, festivals, and ordinairy life of the Incas come alive in the imagination of the listener. One is transported to another time and culture.

Music in the the diablada, kantu, saya, yaravi, huayao, carnaval, and San Jacinto, rhythms played on the panpipes, quenas, and stringed instruments transmit the energy, beauty, flow of life, joy, sadness and harmony of this unique part of the world. If you can not afford a trip to the Andes Mountains to hear the traditional music of the hidden villages live ... this is the next best thing! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful mood uplifter.......2003-12-11

In this album Inkuyo plays a medley of traditional and contemporary compositions with traditional Andean instruments (flute, panpipes, guitar and drums). The tunes are mostly joyful with a few melancholy ones. The music, which is purely instrumental (except for one track),is through and through traditional with no concessions made to New Age or Pop styles.

It is however my opinion that Inkuyo has removed some of the rough edges of popular Andean music to better please our Western ears, at least this is what I feel when I compare the songs on this cd with other folk-music from the Andes that I have. But this is an improvement , not an impoverishment.

The quality of the recording is outstanding and the music a real delight for the ear and the heart. Besides, this is a very long cd:68 minutes! And unlike other albums that only have one or two good songs, every single track of "Land of the Incas" is beautiful and worth listening to. If you like Peruvian music or are looking for music to lift up your spirits, this is definetely a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD to play along to........2003-07-03

I have been learning to play the panflute for a few months, so I am always on the lookout for new panflute music to play along to. This
CD is by far the best performed and liveliest panflute CD that I have found, and I am having great fun playing along to it.

    5 out of 5 stars Transported.......2000-09-07

Prepare to be transported to the Andes when you listen to this CD. The blend of styles, instruments (traditional & modern) & muscians culminate in a journey for your mind to the Andes. I could feel the crisp thin air as I traveled through Ecuador, Peru, Chile & Bolivia on the wings of each song.

If you want to be transported too. Get this CD

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Excellent.......1999-09-20

I find this CD to be very relaxing and inspiring. I commonly use it as background music for creating artwork. In my opinion "Andean Legacy" belongs in the collection of ALL Andean music enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Another, haunting kind of "mountain music".......1998-11-23

Being born and raised in Applachia, I was struck by the strong, unexpected parallels between the songs included on this CD and the traditional Bluegrass and Celtic musical traditions I grew up with. Substitute fiddle or hammered dulcimer for flute, and the music of the Andean mountains seems suddenly familiar, as though mountain cultures separated by miles have found a common musical space to inhabit. I have found this CD excellent for meditation and as a background for yoga.

4 out of 5 stars Polished, organized variances of contemporary Andean Music.......1998-08-03

Personally I do not enjoy what seems to be "old, traditional" Andean Music for long periods of time. I find I like a more contemporary, upbeat, arrangement of the use of flutes, churangos, etc. Overall I have enjoyed ANDEAN LEGACY but I do not feel its a pure Andean Music CD. This CD presents Andean music and musical instruments in a contemporary presentation. The CD even has a bit of country music flavor on several songs for those who like that venue. For a person who wants to experience Andean Music this CD provides nice variety and insight what contemporary Andean Music is like. For the person who has CD's on Andean Music, I feel, ANDEAN LEGACY would be a nice enhancement.

    4 out of 5 stars beautiful music.......2007-01-30

This is a brilliant album - Inti-Illimani, John WIlliams, Paco Peña? C'mon! This is music that will reward patient listeners. This is deeply soulful, social protest music. Non-Spanish speakers should try to track down the lyrics and find a way of translating them, to appreciate the meaning and the sentiment.
As for the reviewer who copies and pastes the same review for all his reviews of Inti-Illimani's discs... "...the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende..." - I don't think one line in a review makes it a political venue, but you have just made it into one with your few paragraphs praising Pinochet.

4 out of 5 stars Let us learn to appreciate their great music without..........2005-12-30

It has been an enormous pleasure to listen to Inti Illimani for the past 20 years. Definitely great musicians and great recordings, to say the least. However the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende and call his deplorable and failed communist period in power exciting, and Pinochet's years "the frightening Pinochet years" (read reviews under The Best of Inti Illimani), can only come from the twisted mind of someone who still believes in 20th Century myths: the myth of Fidel Castro, the myth of Che Guevara, the myth of the proletariat, etc. Having survived 11 years in a communist country I know better, a lot better. All of us should by now. Unfortunately we do not. Look at Venezueza and now Bolivia, with the two puppets in power dancing to the music of Fidel Castro.
Frightening years for whom? For the communists and all members of the red tribe of disciples of Fidel Castro, of course. Today, to still call Pinochet a dictator and Fidel Castro "president" is beyond comprehension. Look at Chile today. Can anyone believe it could have become what it is now without eliminating Allende's regime and crushing the communists?
I give Inti Illimani an A for their music. Let us learn to appreciate their great music without praising their disastrous and failed political views. For that, they get capital F.

    5 out of 5 stars INTI'S MASTERWORK.......2005-11-13

I used to buy Inti's LPs when I was 12 and I was schooling in Italy.
It still remains one of my favourite musical groups of all time.
Fragments of a Dream is, simply put, their masterwork, the one where Horacio Salinas reaches the greatest heights of inspiration in a blend I would call, at times, "modern Latin American baroque".
It starts with a piece inspired by my fatherland's folk music, Sardegna, and ends with a dismantling-cum-reconstruction of the principle of the dance worthy of any great classical composer. Brilliant

5 out of 5 stars Manns, Salinas, Peña, Williams, Inti una gran combinación........2000-05-08

5 out of 5 stars Quisiera ser paloma para volar.......1999-05-07

    Album Description

High in the Andes, in the remote reaches of the altiplano, or high plains, is a region that the Spanish never conquered. There, the language of the Incas is still spoken and sung, and the sounds of pre-Columbian music still echo. The haunting whistle of the pan-pipes, the ancient flutes, and the drums are all featured on Inkuyo's The Double-Headed Serpent.

This recording, like Inkuyo's previous work, includes a number of traditional Andean folk songs and dances - some old enough to date back to the Incan Empire. The group also performs the recent Latin American phenomenon known as Nueva Cancion, or New Song, that contains social or sharply political lyrics, and combines traditional and European instruments.

Both styles can express different moods, from festive to melancholic. The centuries of Spanish oppression of the native culture are expressed in the flutes of the Incas which speak of the cold, timeless winds of the altiplano and the hardy people who have lived there. South American history also becomes the rallying cry for some of the alternately jubilant or dramatic songs of the Nueva Cancion.

The instruments on The Double-Headed Serpent vary widely, from instruments found only in certain parts of the Andes to more familiar instruments like the charango, a mandolin made out of an armadillo shell, or the sikus, a pan-pipe which is always played by two musicians, so that the melodies are pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle. Of course, there is also the bewildering array of wooden and bone flutes that characterize Andean music.

    3 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-03-06

I already had Land of the Incas, and it's awesome. Then I got this and it's much less than awesome. The songs on here are generally uninteresting. If you're new to Inkuyo or to Peruvian-style music, get Land of the Incas instead.

5 out of 5 stars From Andean peaks.......2006-06-23

From the snow-dappled heights of the Andes comes music, not just coffee.

This is a beautiful, peaceful album perfect for meditation. It uses both traditional&contemporary rhythms.Listening to this album (I had the cassette then, now I have the CD)in college brought me much peace.

The opening song is a beautiful introduction, using ancient rhythms. There isn't a single weak track. If you like Carlos Nakai, this is a perfect accompaniment.

    Enjoy the music of Peru!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual, Moving, Inspiring, Hypnotizing and erotic!!!.......2004-02-24

This is the first Peruvian CD that I have ever purchased. It's very hard to explain what I feel when I listen to this music. It's like seeing a mountain range and trying to take a picture, only ending up with a flat dull image of a beautiful inspiration. Inkuyo is like that, they are the mountain range. The flute and drum beats will make you want to dance naked around a roaring fire. The huaynos are hypnotizing and erotic. The quechua language, mixed with some spanish, is amazing and beautiful. This is, in my opinion, the best of Inkuyo's recordings. Hypnotizing and erotic!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible Music...a must have!.......1998-10-17

This CD was my introduction to Andean Music...and remains my favorite. This music is very rich and full of life...the album contains a large variety of moods and colors... No matter what your musical interst, you should find most (if not all) of the tracks moving. An excellent choice!

4 out of 5 stars When there is no more room in hell, the damned (as well as the dead) will walk the Earth.......2005-08-15

Incantation's "Mortal Throne of Nazarene" is one of the darkest and most ominous records I've ever heard. From start to finish, the four piece drags listeners through an abyss of the most sinful and vile. Sludgy and murky guitar tone, unintelligible and nasty growls, humming low end all held together by echoing drums. Definitely a primitive yet classic death metal sound. The artwork is also incredible. The inside illustration by Wes Benscoter describes the forbidden nature of this record quite well, if the Carcass style collage on the cover didn't already give you that impression. A must have for anyone who appreciates the early recordings of Internal Bleeding, Cannibal Corpse, Grave and Hypocrisy.

4 out of 5 stars Another death metal classic!!.......2005-05-15

A great album, yet I still have a few gripes about it...

First with the pluses. This album is heavier and faster than Onward To Golgotha. The evilness of their fast/slow attack is still intact, the vocals are still brutally inhuman, and some of Incantation's best songs are on this album, such as "Emaciated Holy Figure", "Nocturnal Dominion", "Blissful Bloodshower", and the epic "Abolishment Of Immaculate Serenity" are all found here.

Now with the minuses. The production sounds evil, yet really muddy at some parts. The drums (the kick drums in particular) are also kind of buried in the mix throughout the whole album, and the drumming itself is rather bland. They would've done better with someone who wasn't a sessions musician in my opinion, maybe they would've put a little more effort into it.

Either way, this is still a good death metal album for those of you who like their metal brutal and blasphemous.

1 out of 5 stars A bunch of demon possesed losers.......2003-10-23

The music is just a bunch of scary sounding chords with a guy making annoying sounds. Wheres the music. it is very depressing and kinda scary. They sound like a bunch of demon possesed losers. Maybe if you were doing a movie or other dramatic performance it would sound okay to set a mood for background music, but not for easy listening. if you are looking for something fun to listen to this is not fun

5 out of 5 stars WHAT HELL MAY SOUND LIKE........2003-10-19

This is one of the best and most darkest of death metal cd's that I own in my collection. This album has it all=speed, heaviness, rawness and well constructed song structures. The album has a very dark atmosphere because of the detuned sound of the guitars and craig pillards low gutteral vocals. It surprises me that this piece of work has not gotten more reviews from people.I would recommend this album to any fan of the genre.PEACE OUT!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most disturbing metal releases, ever........2001-04-17

I don't know where to begin with this cd. It is pretty hard to impress me these days, but Incantation does. The guitars have a very distinctive, hopelessly detuned evilness to them. They actually sound...rancid. Like a big slab of rotting flesh suffocating you. I like how they don't use the standard scooped out death metal guitar tone like Cannibal Corpse. The drumming, while not the best I've heard, is solid. Feels like a good, stiff beating administered with a crowbar. Probably the most noticeable thing about this album are the vocals. Straight from hell, they are. Sound a lot like Mortician, except Incantation sings more intelligent lyrics. Incantation also have a knack for mixing the blast beats up with slow minor passages, giving the album a savage doom feel. Well, that's all folks. Forget Deicide, get into Incantation. They are the real deal.

2 out of 5 stars nothing to do with Andes.......2005-12-01

I am a big fan of Andean music.
Music on this CD is nice but has nothing to do with the Andes, it is more Paraguaian...

3 out of 5 stars Different Flute, Guitar and Harp of the Andes?.......2000-01-13

I have an audio tape of this same title on the Olympic Records label by Los Cranos. It's wonderful; very ethnic, but I think it has different selections than this one. Don't confuse the two.

    5 out of 5 stars pretty!.......1999-11-17

4 out of 5 stars Very soothing, inspiring background music.......1998-05-11

"Background music" isn't much of a compliment, I know, but I really do recommend this CD. It calms me down and puts me back into a sunny mood. Great for driving in bad road conditions or doing an icky task. My husband says of folk music that it's really all the same tune, only started at different places and played at different speeds (he's kidding). In this case, its true (for me). I can't tell one track from another, but thank goodness it's a song I like!
