As one of the driving forces in the French-Spanish ethno-punk band Mano Negra, songwriter-guitarist Chao delivers a surprising solo endeavor. Centered around a simple editorial writing style and an acoustic guitar, this album chronicles his political and personal travels around the world, studying the foibles of life in Latin America and the Caribbean, through Africa and back to Europe. He quotes but never actually plays salsa, son, reggae, Latin pop, and African folk music, all to the service of his songs (written and sung in English, French, and Spanish). The backing is a deceptive hodgepodge of guest artists and collected sounds he has pasted together to service the simple songs he sings. There is a circuslike feel to the whole project, a childlike sense of wonder coupled with a cynical and sometimes sly glance at the "real world." This is a single piece of work, each song bleeding into the next without stopping, a train ride that slows at each station along the way but never stops. It has charm, wit, and depth--a rare and potent combination of virtues for a pop musician. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Happiness Comes in a CD.......2007-07-06

Why isn't Manu Chao more well-known in the States? He should be! I discovered his music purely by accident and have since learned he is very well-known throughout the world, but rarely comes to the US for touring. He was at San Francisco Civic Center in summer of 2007 and the place was packed. I can only describe this music through the title of this review. It is playful, simple, creative, thought-provoking and unique. Chao mixes several different languages into the lyrics of one tune and reuses musical compositions from other songs for new. Some 'pureblood' musicians criticise that last part, but for me it makes me feel like his music is an old friend, one who immediately makes you smile every time you see him! Get this CD so you can hear 'King of the Bongo!' It's worth the purchase price just for that alone!

4 out of 5 stars Fluid Enjoyment.......2006-11-10

This album, in every sense of the word 'album', is great. I saw Manu Chao live in Chicago, Summer of '06, and was blown away. Clandestino was a great introduction to a studio album by Manu Chao for me. The songs link together when listened to on CD that is reminiscent of the way Beatles albums were put together. If you are looking for an album to remind you of travel and adventure away from where you might currently be, this is the one!

5 out of 5 stars First solo work by a genius.......2006-08-10

Before this, his debut solo album, Manu Chao had already become famous in front of musical troupe Mano Negra. Yet with "Clandestino" Manu Chao showed, like other legendary band leaders before him, the true caliber of his musical genius.

Keeping up with politically loaded songs that were so characteristic in Mano Negra, and coupled with an undying joyful spirit, the album perfectly blends styles such as reggae, ska and other tropical rhythms with samples of radio transmissions and speeches, to produce an unmistakeable effect that can only be described as Manu Chao.

Get this one and also make sure to get your hands on "Proxima Estacion: Esperanza" which is just as good.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting..........2006-06-17

It's like looking at a Monet, enjoying a piece of your favorite fruit in the beach at night, or backpacking through Latin America. Sorry for this explanation, but you just can't put in words the feelings and places this CD can take you to. It's definitely an experience, a compilation of melodies and flavors from different countries. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Possibly politically interesting, but extremely dull musically.......2006-04-29

I read all the glowing reviews of this album, and all I can say is that it must be the case that you have to speak Spanish to enjoy it. Judging by the merits of the music itself, there is not a single song on the entire CD that ventures outside of an elementary and predictable 3 chord progression - 1-4-5-1 (or for the minor songs, which almost all of them are, - 1-6-7-1). It's as if the composer had a single musical idea and used it to beat his listeners to death. Even the somewhat unusual instrumentation become maddening after hearing it for 16 songs in a row.

I can understand how someone might enjoy the overall style and rhythm, but that by itself doesn't make it high quality. In my opinion, if this weren't considered "World Music", it wouldn't have achieved anything near the apparent success it has.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites........2001-09-03

I first heard Manu Chao at a party in Nimes, France in 1999(Bongo Bong/Je ne t'aime plus) and I was so hooked I was at the music store the next day to get my copy. I've since heard it all over France and in other areas of Europe. It's definitely something different.. and it leaves you with a bit to think about, in terms of life, love, and society (it helps to understand the language.. I try to decipher a bit of the spanish from my knowledge of french/italian). Manu's come out with a new album too; I'm hoping to hear that one soon.
