On this live album, the Battlefield Band is joined by five different guests. Recorded during three concerts at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, the album features a generous helping of 28 different songs and instrumental dance tunes, but the highlights occur when the guests visit the band on stage. Eric Rigler, a Californian featured on the "Braveheart" soundtrack, plays the smaller, sweeter uillean pipes in harmony and counterpoint with Iain MacDonald's bagpipes on two songs and three tunes. Alison Kinnaird, a frequent collaborator in the past, joins the Battlefield Band again to add her Scottish harp and arrangement to the traditional air, "Tuireadh Iain Ruaidh." Flutist Seamus Tansey adds an Irish flavor on two tunes cowritten with MacDonald. And the Battlefield Band joins Glasgow's Radio Sweethearts for a version of Dave Dudley's truck-driving classic, "Six Days on the Road." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Mellow, Gentle, and Excellent.......2002-06-17

I found out about the Battlefield Band by doing a random search on Amazon. And this was their first album I bought -- for no particular reason. It was an excellent choice. It's not as energetic as some of their other work, as they use mostly the fiddle, whistles, and even a harp on slow, soothing songs. The pace does pick up, however, with the last four pieces.

My personal favorites are #1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12 - 15. Track 14 was quite an unexpected treat. It starts off in the traditional country style, but after about 3 minutes it goes Scottish country. I love the bluegrass bagpipes!

This album is a great introduction to the band with music that will never get old. It's not quite representative of their current style, but it is no doubt worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars magnificent.......1998-09-22

This cd was my first full introduction to Battlefield Band, and man-alive, I was hooked within a couple of minutes. Deeply rooted in Scottish tradition (and Irish, as well), the lads even manage to do an American country standard better than the original. This record shows the band's energy and strengths in marvelous fashion and ends it all with the rousing Top Tier set. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Celtic music mixed with modern technology.......1998-06-20

As an avid fan of the group for the past 17 yrs, I've seen them transition through different members, but still keeping alive their particular style and flavor. This is the last recording of the group before another major transition took place and is an excellent example of their ability to combine traditional music with modern technology.

3 out of 5 stars Should of been Mixed.......2005-10-01

Seriously here, come on Dave. Somebody tell me what the point of having all these great tracks unmixed. Sure Djs can get the full uncut unedited version and play with it themselves but it takes away from the whole theme when there are pauses between each song. That is my first gripe, my second you ask?? Starts way to slow for a 10 song one disc album. If you are going to have a 10 song one disc album it better kick a-- all the way through start to end. Do I hate this album no, Is it going to stand the test of time, no. Buy it if you like, just don't expect anything Dave Seaman like about it. Sure he picked the songs but had nothing else to do with it. It's just a bummer.

4 out of 5 stars 6 solid tracks on here. Worth picking up........2005-09-15

An unmixed collection of progressive house tracks from DJ/producers from Greece. Dave Seaman couldn't have picked a better country to start his Across Borders series with, as Greece has some of the hottest DJ's lately, including their best export, G-Pal. All of these artists produced these tracks exclusively for this CD. I've seen one or two of them already pop up on other comps, but they are in remix form.

G-Pal kicks things off with a haunting downtempo vocal track, featuring Anna Maria X. Dousk quickly picks things up on the next track with a stunner called Bummer. Tracks 3, 7, 8, and 10 are not quite up to par with the rest of the solid offerings on here. None of these 4 are bad, they are just rather uneven, with no catchy beats or melodies, and 2 of them border on being rather cheesy, simple-simon house. I was surprised by Kosmas Epsilon, because his past stuff was all solid.

Tracks 4 and 5 are my two favs of the CD, with explosive Supermarket by Phatjak and the melodic Paramount by Christian Cambas. Tonedepth's offering is another downtempo track, with some great fluttering guitar sounds. A typical Tonedepth track for sure.

Overall, one worth picking up as there are 6 great tracks to get here, all in unmixed form (although none of them are super long, and a few are under 5 minutes).

Let me just add that I'm dying for G-Pal to release a CD because his radio mixes are currently the best progressive house sets I'm hearing by anyone!

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Must Be Told.......1999-04-21

You know, a few years back a couple of boys in this little band called Japan decided "hey, we should make music". Little did they know, THEY WERE ALREADY IN A BAND. When they realised this, they broke up. Jansen/Barbierri seem to be a solid team of hipsters, out there making obscure music more obscure. Aside from their release as The Dolphin Brothers, they hadn't done a pop album since Japan. And this album is no exception. With guest bassist Mick Karn, this would be the predecessor for the trio building their own label, Medium.

5 out of 5 stars #2 on tlr's "Top Thirteen Albums to Be Buried With" list!.......1998-10-12

              Magnificent!

This album is nothing short of a revalation. When the CD finally stops spinning and the digits on your display read 00:00 and you're about to hit the play button again, remember to push the "repeat all" button, because you'll want to hear it again and again and again.

You could liken this album to a journey, a holiday trip to some exotic local so to speak, that you look at the pictures and play the home video over and over again. That emotional baggage of yours will be handled with the utmost of care, and will probably look better than it from the start. Enjoy!
