Sun-kissed house grooves are once again the order of the day on Those Things, the second solo album from Bay Area DJ/producer Miguel Migs. In contrast to 2002's Colorful You, however, this go-round has Migs taking his blissed-out beats in a more organic direction by throwing a variety of live instruments into the mix. On the title track, for instance, house queen Lisa Shaw's vocals bounce atop a percolating bassline that juggles multiple synths, rhythmic funk guitar, an overdriven guitar solo, and vocal samples. Other tracks are laced with trumpet, sax, and congas. For the most part, this eclectic approach bears fruit by giving Migs a deeper bag of tricks to use in working his deep house magic: "So Far" and "Mesmerized," which both feature the superb vocals of LT (a.k.a. Aya) have more than enough of that bubbly warmth that put Naked Music on the map, while more novel tunes like "Shake It Up"--where Brand Nubian's Sadat X tells the tale of a night out with some cliché but more playfulness--are unexpectedly beguiling. Migs, widely known for his skills in the studio, has hit a new a high with Those Things, and even dance-music skeptics will find this organic flavor of house difficult to resist. --Brent Kallmer

Album Description

Those Things, the anticipated sophomore artist album by electronic music's soulful maestro Miguel Migs...The long-awaited follow up to the internationally acclaimed `Colorful You'( released in 2003 on Astralwerks/ Naked Music. Those Things finds Migs meandering into the old school funk and soul side of the dance music spectrum focusing on his trademark high caliber production and tasteful quality song writing that he is best known for. Drawing inspiration from his diverse musical taste and background, Miguel serves up a tasty blend of 13 original songs featuring an all star line up of special guest vocalists, including Reggae legend Junior Reid, Sadat X from Brand Nubian Fame, LT, Lisa Shaw, Tim Fuller, and Fred Ross from Sly and the Family Stone. The result is an album that takes you on a ride through a unique listening experience crossing the boundaries of dance music with a sound that Miguel has seamlessly blended together.

4 out of 5 stars Different from the Norm Yet Catchy.......2007-06-25

Sometimes it takes going away from a certain style of music to find out what you are really capable of creating. Migs on the other hand did a wonderful job with his latest album "Those Things". Although it isn't his ususal style, I was still impressed with this album. It's not a album to club to but more of a relaxing/ hanging out with friends type of mix. Some of my favorite tracks include "So Far," "Those Things," "Fire,"
"Shake It Up," and "Giving It All". You would not be disappointed with purchasing this album regardless if you are being introduced to Migs for the first time or not.

1 out of 5 stars Mings? it's all over rated.......2007-06-13

he produced a few good cds, used to spin pretty cool....all in the past tense. all his new stuff and parties are true amateur quality. the seams between tracks are obvious, many times he even missed beats, the selection of tracks were real poor... i love deephouse but from now on, i'm not buying any mings. anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Diversified.......2007-05-29

I own every album Miguel has made and in my opinion this album comes straight from Miguels soul. He has also included his reggae feel in this album. I feel this album includes more sub-genres of house music feel than any of his other previous albums. If you want more musical ideas to create your own compositions, this album will trigger more ideas with several subhouse genres.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-05-14

From one of the best deep house DJs, this is substantially below par. He should stick to compilation releases and leave the recordings to true musicians/artists. I felt there was no soul to this CD, as the tracks seem predictable and cheesy. His first artist album (Colorful You) was better, as well as his many DJ CDs - In The House and 24th St. are his best works.

4 out of 5 stars Clever & never boring.......2007-05-11

Miguel Mig's `Those Things' keeps the familiar beats that have made `Migs' a popular electronica name. The new mixes are vocal-laden and contain more guitar, saxophones, and congas than his pervious offerings. The music comes familiar, but somewhat different, almost as if he's pushing a more pop beat than his `Get Salted' and Nude Tempo' releases. Yet Mig's embraces the mix magic in luscious voices of staple singer Lisa Shaw and the mysterious `L.T.', which sounds all too similar to the sexy Aya. While Tim Fuller's easy-going and blended voice carries much of this CD. Vocalist Fred Ross also shows much promise with his clean voice and emotional tone.

`So Far', Can't get through', `Mesmerized', `Sometime', `Get down tonight', and Side to Side' are the more listenable and memorable songs in this CD. I've listened to them for several days now and they haven't gotten boring.

I'm hoping to hear more from Miguel Mig's mixes in the near future. He's the closest this to a Paul Oakenfold without marquee vocalists.

I recommend this CD to anyone who like dance music without the harshness. This smooth blend will have your friends asking `Who's that!"

The seventh installment in the House of Om series features the heavyweight turntable techniques of DJ Mark Farina, who returns to his San Francisco roots eight years after having put West Coast house on the map with the much acclaimed San Francisco Sessions. Farina's style is as hard to pin down as the globetrotting DJ himself, and this mix is no exception. It starts out on a deeper note, with an obscure a cappella that is signature Farina, moving quickly into some uptempo numbers that get the head nodding and the feet shuffling. The mix really lets loose with tracks from Check Diesel, Vibezselect, and the Littelmen before moving into warm, laid-back grooves to bring it home. It progresses nicely, a few dead spots (like the Kerry Chandler track) notwithstanding. While it's a far cry from the original San Francisco Sessions, this mix exemplifies why Farina gets held to a higher standard; he truly is in a league of his own. --Anish Acharya

Album Description

The House of Om mix we've all been waiting for from Om's number one jock, Mark Farina! Get your dancin' shoes on kids, because Mark puts this compilation together just like he plays in clubs around the world. Featuring his precise mixing and unique selection of cuts that only he can seem to get his hands on this early in the game! "Every once in a while, an entire genre of music can be defined by the tastes and technique of the selector who somehow understands it better than anyone else. Such is the sort of success that San Francisco - based DJ/producer Mark Farina has achieved for himself since starting off as a record collector and dedicated beatfreak in the house mecca of Chicago." - DJ TIMES

Pretty typical set for Farina and as usual, never as good as a live set. Some great tracks and programming is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Farina does it again.................2007-04-20

Yep yep....Mark Farina did it again....simply blowing my mind away with another house mix that will definately keep you moving. A little more uptempo than normal Farina mixes but never the less....outstanding. It just keeps building up to a state where you find yourself just bobbing your head to the funky deep house that made Mark Farina who he is today. Don't hesitate....add this to your collection!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great except for the feedback........2007-06-14

I really enjoy this CD, and have listened to it regularly since purchase. However, several minutes into the first track, a noise starts that really sounds like feedback. It's harsh and a little irritating, but not intolerable. One thing to consider is that I've been listening to this on a poor quality clock radio/cd player. Perhaps it is unnoticeable when played on better equipment.

4 out of 5 stars Really, really nice CD.......2007-06-08

This CD is really nice, helping to enter deep meditative stages. I particularly like the second track, which adds music to the traditional chant of OM, but both are beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD! .......2007-04-09

My teacher started using these CDs in our classroom while we did some thinking and meditation exercises and I couldn't believe how relaxed I felt surrounded by 30 people. The vibes in the room were amazing and I immediately asked her, after class, what the CD was and where she had gotten it.

She showed me it was the Tamboura CD and said they were all available on Amazon. Now I have the Chanting Om, Tamboura, and Tibetan Singing Bowl. Each are wonderful and I highly recommend them!

4 out of 5 stars great mediation music.......2007-03-30

great chanting for yoga or meditation especially since I'm not good at chanting myself. Very easy to focus on the sound. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD for a variety of settings.......2007-03-29

There's one word to describe all three of the CDs that you sent us for review. Hypnotic.

We've listened to all of the CDs in a variety of settings.

Chanting Om is our favorite. We've played it on multiple occasions as low background music during work hours. It's soothing and rhythmic and transports the listener to a relaxed state.

It is also a fabulous CD to play while doing yoga; it helps keep you focused while holding poses.

Whether during meditation, yoga, or work, these cd's are perfect for anyone looking to achieve a state of peacefulness.

Myone, Myth, and Symbolyc (S1) are Strange Fruit Project; three emcees who continue to set trends as not your typical southern hip-hop group. Each member sings, raps, and is influenced by the constant journey of everyday life. Through innovative production and creative lyrics, their music separates them from many independent artists.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Healing of Hip Hop- A album to relax too.......2007-07-06

This is a excellent effort from southern rappers in a world of snap, crunk, and pimp music! A southern artist myself and into the more thoughtful hip hop, i knew i would love this CD. It reminds me of a common/LB LP. The beats are wonderfully soulful, and so are the lyrics (wow). If you are a true hip hop fan buy this album, relax, and bump it!

5 out of 5 stars Talented and Refreshing.......2007-04-20

This is a very talented group of young MC's. The music is mellow and it has an all around "Good Feeling" to it. This album can be enjoyed by all.

    5 out of 5 stars IntelliHop!.......2007-04-14

Really made their mark with this installment "The Healing". Lyrics courageous enough to really speak to our condition with cleaver tracks, stimulating instrumentation and flow sychronized rhymes. They trully demonstrate they understand the importance of timing when delivering the verse. Outstanding production and collabo's including Badu who is always a welcome addition to any conscious track as well as, underground's trio Little Brother who have definately shown their devotion to the underground. All the tracks on this joint have a message you should be able to relate to.

It is a collector's item for those who focus on this love life music. This one if for the PEOPLE.

    GO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Dirty South? {4 Stars}.......2007-03-14

If Little Brother were still interesting, not full of themselves, or taking themselves so seriously, they'd sound like Strange Fruit Project. I know I'll get a lot of unhelpfuls for that statement, but I think S1, Myth, and Myone have similar rhyme styles to LB, but with more speed and fluidity and less dependence on metaphors and similies. You can witness the similarities and the differences on "Rise" which features Little Brother. Not only do they spit like no other rapper I've ever heard out of Texas, but the production is on point as well. S1 raps, but he also (excellently) produces 5 of the 14 tracks with 9th Wonder (1), the underrated Illmind (3), Nicolay (1), M-Phazes (1), the constantly overlooked Jake One (1), The Foundation, and Vitamin D holding down the rest of the production. I have to say that the beats are definitely what you'd expect from that lineup.

As far as flaws go, there really aren't many. Maybe one or two tracks are what I would label as skip material (Liberation & Pinball). They just didn't grab the ears of this particular listener, but if you dig that smooth stuff, then you should be able to play this one from start to finish.

The Healing is easily one of the top 15 hip hop releases of 2006. S1, Myth, and Myone are some of the dopest rappers I've ever heard to come out of the lone star state. To be honest, I never knew Texas had it in 'em. I recommend adding this one to your library.

Standout Tracks: The Plague, Soul Clap, You (The Only Ones) (My Favorite), A Change feat. The Procussins [Bonus Track], Get Live feat. Erykah Badu, Under Pressure, Makin' My Way, and Special feat. Thesis

4 out of 5 stars Good easy listening, slightly experimental.......2007-02-17

This hip hop has a positive religious vibe with the likes of Erykah and soulsters like Darien Brockington and Thesis. I would class it as neo-soul/underground hip hop. Feels as though it has a touch of kindred the family soulness to it which is always good. The beats vary from song to song which gives some variety, there's some new experimentalness there but I always find I can hear new styles in more hardcore and underground hip hop. Overall some wicked collabo's and a bit of heart tingling stuff but nothing to give it the label of being a classic (even though the group are relatively unknown).

I'm a big fan of this series. I love the creative beats and vocals. You have to hear track #8 - Simeon's "not feelin this". Oh man this song is good. I'd buy the album just for this one song. It's so good I gave this album 5 stars for it. Check it out!

The type of album that you do one of many things to. Cruise, have sex, and be one with nature's pine trees. Its the best OM lounge cd out. It even beat out OM 3, in my opinion.

Stand out tracks being, #4, 10, 8, 9, ............ and pretty much the rest of the album.

That's my review, its tight, go cop it.

P.S. Its for the mature crowd, great lounge music.

Exquisite is the best word for this cd.I own all ten volumes and this has become my favorite. It ranks right up there with Mushroom Jazz 4&5, and Sky Lounge. Right from the first listen I was blown away as to how sweet this sounds. It has just the right mix of instrumentals and vocals. I highly recommend this cd.

      Album Description

OM - The Reverberation of Source - our all-time best-selling soundtrack.... OM is an ancient Sanskrit word symbolizing the phenomenal energy vibration of Source. This beautiful soundtrack features Master Charles' voice, accompanied by instrumentation and the meditative sound of the ocean.

2 out of 5 stars 30 sec. repeated recording does not make mantra meditation........2007-03-16

"A waste of money" is the best I can say about Charles Cannon's CD: Om - The Reverberation Of Source ASIN: B00004ZCP3. The cover is attractive and uses two of my favorite words that actually have real spiritual and metaphysical meaning; however the audio content of the CD is a misrepresentation of repetitive living yoga Pranayama Om mantra-ing. The problem is not its repetition, since that is what is done when using Om mantra, the problems is its mechanical looping of the exact same recording. It starts out very lovely for about 30 seconds and then proceeds to repeat those exact same 30 seconds over, and over, and over, again for the next 29 to 30 min.; the second half of the CD is the exact same repetitive looping as the first half except about a minute longer.

Given that listeners only get about 30 seconds of continuous mantra-ing, that CD fails to share Charles' personal vibrational relation to humane spiritual source via his mantra-ing. Perhaps he is shy about exposing his individual soul to a generic mass audience of untold numbers of which he has never met, and perhaps that wise, I probably could be too; the problem is it also fails, as a useful mantra-ing CD in that its repetitive looping is artificial, mechanical, not natural, and mildly antagonistic to human consciousness (despite the cover's quasi-scientific gibberish) - that CD takes a lovely 30 second and constrains and subjugates it to a machine looping thus droning final mix (not to be confused with the droning of musical instruments that must be repeatedly activated by humans, preferably musicians, and therefore vary naturally). So, why is that so important?

Human beings have fluctuations in their breathing, the volume of their vocalizations, the intent of and feelings during Oming all of which are very personal; furthermore, human anatomy is governed by the Divine Proportion and each of us anatomically deviate form it somewhat. In addition, part of our individual spirits are body ejected and often re-absorbed biological photons of light whose energy states coincide with the Fibonacci Series which is in turn also governed by the Divine Proportion; what this amounts to is that 30 seconds of real time recording looped over, and over, and over etc. again is truly mechanical circularity... ah......I don't recommend that CD, nor do I recommend any CD that repeats the exact same little bit of recorded mantra-ing.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite continuous OM .......2007-02-08

I have several long/continuous tracks that I use sometimes in meditation. This is one of my favorites. If I'm meditating on OM, I can start by joining in on the chant and then as I go deeper I can let go of the chant and continue the meditation silently. The harmonics on this CD are particularly nice. My other most favorite in this line is Jonathan Goldman's Ultimate OM.

5 out of 5 stars An enjoyable meditation CD with many uses.......2007-01-19

I don't use it for meditation or yoga, although as the other reviewers note it would be definatly perfect background music for either. The cd is a combination of the Master Charles himself and soothing rolling sounds of the ocean. Also, it's not synthetic as other compositions can often be. I use it for clearing the space in my house (works perfectly) and sometimes I chant Om to it as well, which creates a wonderful mind release and full body pleasure sensations when done for for 20-60 minutes.

Om, is one of several CDs produced by Master Charles. I have the 15 minute meditation disc as well which is quite good and another he produced called Harmonic Coherence specificially for space clearing, which is also good, although I suspect it was produced partly a response to Ken Wilber's Integral movement. In any case, it's nice to have a couple of tools do the same job.

Use headphones for a real mind treat if you're working on your computer and experience the joy as it goes to work on your cells. There are very useful free samples of all of the CDs at his site if you want to check out what they're about. As for the whole meditation delta, theta thing... I won't get into it here. There's lots of research that has been done on that and you'll find it on the web, my experience with the entrainment CDs... they're definately helpful... the pricing though on these and Holosync... well, what can I say... at $250+ a pop per level they're definately not about community service or getting them out to the masses. If you've seen those pictures of the influence of various thoughts, words and sounds on water crystals and how sound waves create patterns in sand, I have no doubt that they do similar things to our brainwaves and similarly affect our internal states. I definately feel more balanced after listening to this CD.

I've used and returned to this CD time (which I can't say for many others I've bought) and time and have found it to be exceptional value for money. I'd have no hesitation in replacing it at the list price here.

I am a personal growth coach who teaches meditation in workshop settings. While I have not used this sound track in any of my workshops, I use it myself and have found it helpful in setting the right atmosphere for meditation.

On the CD the sacred sound of OM is chanted repeatedly over the sounds of light instrumental music and the ocean. It is repetitive, which is partly why I think it is successful in inducing a very relaxed state of mind without being a distraction. I also think the natural sound of the ocean helps create a certain deep sense of relaxation as well because it is a natural rhythmic sound.

While I haven't used it in my yoga practice, I suspect it would be excellent for restorative yoga and any relaxation poses at the end of an asana sequence. I know for me it induces a relaxed state and it is one of my favorite CDs to use to quiet my mind. I look forward to trying it with yoga in the future.

While any CD or guided meditation can be a crutch, sometimes a crutch is useful. For beginners in meditation, I recommend it highly to help achieve a relaxed state of mind. However, I think it's also important to learn to achieve a relaxed state without any props.

Part of my work also involves the use of biofeedback. On the back of the CD there are some claims that it induces alpha brain states. While I haven't put this to the test with recording EEG data, I suspect there is some truth to this claim.

With respect to the music, it is not a melody that is developed. Rather the music takes the form of repeated sounds, almost like a chant. Again, this is an approach that is unlikely to distract the mind and conducive to a deeply relaxed state.

I found the price of this CD to be a bit high. However, I have used it many, many times and have never tired of it. Unfortunately, I can't say this for a lot of the other CDs that are out there that claim to be good music for meditation or yoga.

I think you can buy this CD with confidence as long as you understand what you are getting. I hope it bring you the relaxation and proper atmosphere you are looking to create for your meditation practice.

Do Not assume that One can attain a meditative State by listening to a CD, or reading a book. Listening to this CD itself WILL NOT STILL THE MIND.

The Sounds are lovely, and creates a desire to be still, but it will not create a meditative state, a trascendental state of mind. That MUST BE INDUCED BY THE SELF.
