Tonggeret

Tongerret showcases the sinuous, melismatic female vocals of Indonesia's Idjah Hadidjah, who performs songs spanning three genres of regional Sundanese popular music: the concert music styles kliningan and celempungan, and the dance music jaipongan. The latter style, adapted by renowned composer/choreographer Gugum Gumbira from the earlier, "disreputable," Ketuk Tilu tradition of Sundanese dance music, enjoyed immense popularity throughout Indonesia in the late 1970s and early 1980s, catapulting Idjah Hadidjah to national stardom. Although jaipongan music shares instrumentation (gongs and metallophones) and certain formal similarities with Indonesia's better-known gamelan (ceremonial percussion orchestra) tradition, its forceful drumming and erotic overtones give it a much more contemporary sound. The Kliningan and Celempungan selections, by contrast, are imbued with a dreamy, soft-focus quality, heightened by Hadidjah's richly ornamented vocalizing. --Dennis Rea

5 out of 5 stars The Quiet Storm Indonesian Style.......2007-07-02

Stumbled over this when I was reading *Ode* magazine a year or so ago, and recently decided to buy the cd on a whim. Glad I did. From the first sounds, I was like - whoah - this is different. Sumptuous and erotic - put this on late at night, with some candles, Kush incense, some pillows, and a lover, and its on. However, this is good anytime. I have an eclectic music collection with everything from Mahalia Jackson to Enya to Coldplay to Coltrane and this fits firmly at the top of the rotation. So glad I found it.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful 4-D sound.......1999-09-04

well, unlike the other reviewer, i dont think its nuts. this is a beautiful recording of jaipong at its best! welcome to the 4th dimension, unplugged. where are more jaipong classics at amazon???

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Slammin!.......1998-09-11

hard kicking asian break beat dosed with crazy party chants, heavy gongs, slow ambient asian violins, and beautiful soulful singing.

This CD is nuts. I got a copy on vinyl so I can speed it up to 45 RPM!

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece Sampler.......2001-08-12

This CD is a real classic among enthusiasts of Late 20th Century Music. It offers jazz, contemporary, and even minimalist genres of music. John Somebody started out as my favorite selection from this CD many years ago, as it makes a good example of spoken word turned into music. In addition, the Philip Glass selections make a wonderful introduction to his music. I could go on and on about all of the music on this Sampler, as all of it is excellent.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is either an enthusiast of late 20th century music or anyone who is curious. My disclaimer, however, comes in that this is not for someone who is not open to new things. Some of the music on this CD can be like an acquired taste. In the meantime, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Feast.......2000-03-24

Every piece on this album is strikingly original. In fact, I have purchased 4 other albums from the artists on this CD just to hear more of what they have to offer! Should appeal to lovers of world music, jazz and classical.
