Naomi Shemer wrote some of the most popular and best Israeli music. She wrote what has come to be with the years, the musical motto of Yerushalayim Jerusalem. The song 'Yerushalayim Shel Zahav' was written and sung slightly prior to the Six - Day War. It became the motto of the City recaptured.
Another of her most popular songs (Al- HaDvash v' Al Ha'Oketz) ( On the Honey and the Sting) is a wise reflection on life, with its pain, loss and with its beautiful sweetness.
A kibbutznik at birth, and someone later identified with the 'Eretz Yisrael Ha-Shlemah) movement she spoke to the hearts and minds of a broad spectrum of Israelis.
She was the most Israelis of songwriters and one whose songs are still hummed and song throughout the land.
Her performances, despite her to say the least less than impressive voice, were always intensely satisfying as they were informed by an incomparable native joy and strength.
