This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have other versions of CDs of "The Fiddler of the Roof" but Topol is the best and this is one of the best CDs with Topol. As far as "The Fiddler On the Roof" goes, that is a thumbs up 5 star anytime story and songs.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-05-16

I had looked everywhere for this CD. I am so happy to have found the "real" Fiddler on the Roof!

5 out of 5 stars CP as Grandmother Tzeitel.......2007-03-30

At first, I thought this musical was weird but then I grew to like it. It has a sad ending but the thems in the movie are really interesting. Life really is like being a fiddler on the roof. In a musical coming up at my school, I am playign the part of Grandmother Tzeitel in Tevye's dream. I am excited to play the part and I think our musical will go very well!

5 out of 5 stars Never Ending Joy!.......2006-11-22

The music from Fiddler on the Roof is exciting, fun, interesting and funny! This CD is mixed with humor, music from different cultures and a wide mix of different songs. Each song is so different that I can listen to it for hours. I was surprised how enjoyable and pleasent it really is. Although...it is easy to get this music stuck in your head!

The first Songcatcher album contained both traditional Appalachian folk ballads and modern songs inspired by the movie of the same name and performed by contemporary female singers, including Iris DeMent, Julie Miller, and Emmylou Harris. The engaging Songcatcher II, however, is a step back in time. The album's 17 recordings date back to the early 1960s folk-music boom, when long-forgotten singers like Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, and Almeda Riddle were rediscovered by a new generation of music lovers. They sang ancient English and Scottish ballads that had been brought over to America and passed down through the ages, bleak songs about love, infidelity, God, and murder. Boggs, recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, offers his bone-chilling version of "Oh Death"; Riddle, who lived her entire life in Greer's Ferry, Arkansas, sings the creepy "Babes in the Woods," in which two children get lost outdoors and die; Roscoe Holcomb, for whom the phrase "high, lonesome sound" was invented, is downright otherworldly as he accompanies himself on banjo on "Little Birdie." The four tracks by Doc Watson, including the lovely "Pretty Saro," come from his early Vanguard albums, which have long been accessible on compact disc, but most of these recordings haven't been available in years, if ever. Culled from Vanguard's extensive archives, they offer a tantalizing glimpse of the label's rich heritage. --David Hill

I watched the movie, Songcatcher, and became interested in the music. Folk music, like this, is purely American. It may have its foundations in many cultures, but its roots are here, just like America. This compilation is one of several I own, and it is a very good, diverse sampling of this soulful, heartfelt music. I throughly enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Response to Appalachian Music.......2007-03-09

This is a beautifully executed movie that brings home the traditions of Appalachian music to those of us intrigued by but with little knowledge of this lovely old music -- and the way of life of those who sing it.

Bought as a gift for my mother who loved the movie and music from the soundtrack. She said it is not at all like what the movie or soundtrack sound like. If you love original soundtrack you may not like the very bleek lyrics or non-lyrical "songs" on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-02

Don't get the official movie soundtrack... waste of money. Here you will find songs you can't get out of your head... in a good way.

3 out of 5 stars Pure and simple.......2006-11-11

After reading "My Old True Love" by Sheila Kay Adams, a novel about 1850's western North Carolina set in the time of the Civil War, I was drawn to listen to more of the hill-country music. The sound track from "Songcatcher II" is definitly a beautiful sample of that music. I enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Those sounds...a mirror for me.......2007-07-11

Dear Customers,

Thank you for sharing these wonderful arrangements. Cave of the Siddhars. Your music is instantly translated into soul messages. Musical soul massage. I don't know if it was my conscious mind or my unconscious mind but one of them surrendered to the music thanks to the constant didgeridoo in the background. My mind remembered a timeless aspect of itself. Turiya Nada's music that for the first few seconds had sounded extremely exotic fit into the mold of my being, as a result when I combined the music with asana practice I was able to deepen in the poses knowing that I was being "cushioned" by the call of Turiya Nada. The final "Arohara" invocations of the final tracks are perfect for the ending of savasana for me...and I believe for others too.

Thanks,
Nathaniel

i remember listening to the cd before going to a healing movement class. the music and chants vibrate the truth of being. i was able to feel grounded with the ability to completely empty out into the silence of the divine. one of my challenges it to keep my feet here while embracing the inner light. this cd is very supportive of the healing journey and wherever i am in the moment. a beautiful merging of primal sounds and pure light. thank you for the gift of this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Enter the magical/mystical realms :).......2007-03-12

Cave of the Siddhars CD entered my life back in May of 2006. Since then I have listened to it every day at least once. The blending of instruments and Nandhi's voice are amazing. Love it !! The resonance and high vibrational energies seem to awaken and stir ancient memories of knowingness within my being. At the same time bringing a sense of immense peace and joy. My cells dance to the vibrations. A CD that can be listened to anytime anywhere. Highly recommended. Dare to enter the magical/mystical realms of the Siddhar Masters and you won't be disappointed :)

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Journey into the Turiya Nada.......2007-01-11

The wonderful combination of sacred mantras and astonishing music creates a profound inner experience. It is a powerful and amazing journey into the realm of Turiya Nada. I experienced that I was able to reach into a whole new level of awareness by flowing with the sound/light waves.
I was initially curious about how the digeridoo and the many other instruments would work in combination with the mantras, and it works just perfectly - there is always a delicate balance between the music and the chanting. Pure enjoyment all the way...
'The Cave of the Siddhars' really manages to transport awareness to a profound inner state of light and grace. It is a true blessing!

5 out of 5 stars SURF MUSIC DONE RIGHT.......2006-11-01

It's amazing how a group that hadn't played together for over thirty years could put together a CD that is is so tight, melodic, beautiful and down right rockin'! This is just a great CD from beginning to end, if you like surf music, I guarantee you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with the Vara-Tones!.......2006-06-22

I have a few hundred surf CDs and I would have to say thet this CD is my favorite! My next favorite is their new CD called "Headin' Out". They have the reverb and the composition that just makes all of the songs fantastic. If you like instrumental surf you will love this CD! Buy it you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars For real !.......2004-12-17

These guys have been playing for a while and it shows. Odd though it may seem to talk about taste, restraint, and intelligence in surf music, they got it, bro. But even more trippy is that from time to time a certain feeling comes through that I thought had gone out of the world. But it hasn't.

Surf consciousness is an order of magnitude above ordinary consciousness. Buy this album. Go get pounded at the Wedge, come home, drain the water out of your head, put it on loud.

5 out of 5 stars bitchin !.......2000-10-20

If you like authentic surf-lover-composed surf (as opposed to novelty, space, or parody, half-jest surf) this izza great CD. These guys know how to set up the surf-reverb big guitar sound, play their instruments, AND compose authentic styled songs that range (in an admittedly limited genre) from driving, major-minor-chord power blowouts, to calm impressionist sunset-on-the-water knockouts. They've struck a clean balance of mood... sheer fun tinged with the surf-"sense of the numinous" mystical awe. If you're only gonna own one surf-genre CD and you're looking for the best one, this is probably it. If you love surf music, what excuse is there for not owning THIS sucker...? It's that good. Really.

5 out of 5 stars Back In Form.......2000-07-17

Bill Epps and Rich Campbell formed The Vara-Tones in 1961. They are one of the original surf groups that were around when the first wave started. They were most active between '63-'65, during the height of the surf-instro craze. Over thirty years later they have returned as revitalized granddads of a genre that has been experiencing tremendous growth and renewed interest from all outlets of the media, including an entirely new and very hip fan base.

Yes, another group has risen out of the ashes to reclaim their territory. This is a wonderful time to be making music. The world has never been more open to new and different sounds. Although this sound is not new and familiar to some, it never really got the recognition and opportunity that its now experiencing. There is no one that deserves the accolades and fame more than the guys that were there in the beginning.

Listen up all you youngsters out there, want to play surf-instro the way it was meant to be played? The Vara-Tones hold a clinic for eager ears that are willing to learn. They have successfully re-ignited their original sound with the help of today's technologies and equipment. The base sound is still there, it just has a little more oomph now (as Phil Dirt says). The original hit "Repeto" (1964), has been given a shot of new life with an upbeat rockin' flavor and a new title, "Repeto 2000." You get the best of both worlds, as the group plays the original as well the updated version. Speaking of the best of both worlds...When many original surf groups reform and make their music combined with today's sound, it comes out sounding so much stronger, with a new fullness and freshness to it. What was once a mere ripple from a recording standpoint, is now a Tsunami headed your way to give you the ride of your life. It all sounds that much better now because of the enhanced and improved sound quality and sonics.

The latin, island flavored tunes are immensely effective. "El Sereno" and "Midnight In Mazatlan", are as picturesque and inviting as the beaches that are envisioned inside your head while listening. Welcome back Vera-Tones. The surf-instro community needs more groups like you to reform and to remind people from whence they came.

Fair warning- if you have a surfboard in hand, and if this music is played loud, the jetty is subject to high surf.

5 out of 5 stars A bluesy classic from 1979.......2004-02-18

Hank's music has three main roots - country, blues and rock'n'roll. The blues influence is less evident than the other two on some of his other albums but it is strong on this one. The majority of the album (the first four and the last three tracks) is quite mellow, though three consecutive tracks in the middle (I fought the law, Family tradition, Only Daddy that'll walk the line) pick up the tempo.

Family tradition is one of several great songs that Hank has written about himself and his father. I guess it was written in response to people who said that he wasn't like his father, especially his musical style. In the song, Hank lists all the ways in which he is like his father - drinking, smoking, singing and living out his songs.

Old flame new fire, Always loving you, We can work it all out, I've got rights and I just ain't been able are all great original songs. Paying on time sounds like an old Crystal Gayle song (Dreaming my dreams with you) with new lyrics. There are several excellent covers including To love somebody (Bee Gees), I fought the law (an American hit for Bobby Fuller but revived in the late seventies by British punk rockers The Clash) and Only Daddy that'll walk the line (Waylon Jennings).

This is not the most instantly appealing of Hank's albums but there is a lot of great music here, which grows on you with repeat plays. If you like your country music served with a strong blues flavor, this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-11

American shape-note music with its freshness and durability, is the product of circumstances different from our own. It still survives and flourishes today in a variety of styles and places across the continental United States.
Shape-note music evolved with the 'singing school', an American institution dating back to the early 18th century. In Colonial days, traveling singing masters taught part-singing to townsfolk in a community activity that combined sacred and secular values.
The singing-school music was usually sung a cappela and in 3 or 4 parts-tenor(or melody), bass, treble, and usually alto or counter.
By the early 1800's, the music of New England tunesmiths-William Billings,
Daniel Reed, Justin Morgan, and others-had spread throughout the Southern and Central states. There , together with folk hymns and camp-meeting songs, it formed the basis for a sturdy tradition of community singing and religious expression.
The 'Sacred Harp', first compiled in 1844 by two Georgians, Benjamin Franklyn White and his assistant E.J. King, is one of the richest collections of tunes; it is also one of the few shape-note books from that era still in print today.
The sound of Sacred Harp singing has several elements: The surging beat, the intonation of the singers, the minor-modal melodies, and the open harmonies. In the Sacred Harp tradition, mens's and women's voices double the tenor and treble parts, with men and women alone singing the bass and alto, respectively. Dynamics are sacrificed for a uniformly strong sound.
This disc does indeed fulfill all the requirements of shape-singing and therefore is an invaluable contribution to the historian, the teacher of many subjects especially in the arts and humanities. To sit down and listen to it in its entirety is not too enjoyable, unless you are involved with a specific activity that makes it necessary to do so. As a voice teacher, it annoys me with the type of singing it demands such as chest-tone most of the time. But, as I stated above, this is really not for entertainment purposes. The 'Word of Mouth' chorus is to be commended for keeping alive this very important segment of our Musical History and tradition.

4 out of 5 stars one of the best recordings of shape note I've heard.......2006-01-31

Like many, I was first introduced to Sacred Harp music through the music on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. While those recordings are probably my favorites, Rivers of Delight has some excellent recordings of popular, as well as obscure, songs. Although the album lacks the raw energy present in Sacred Harp sings, it gives the listener a good idea of how the different parts sound (sometimes the older rural recordings just sound like caterwauling), without being extremely formal. The album also has a couple renditions of shape note classics in 2 and 4 person arrangements, rather than the larger group. All in all, this album is worthwhile, especially if you're just discovering Shape note singing and would like a good, comprehensive introduction.

3 out of 5 stars The Shaped Note Singing is TOO Polished.......2004-02-04

I was first introduced to shaped note or sacred harp music by listening to the music in the movie Cold Mountain. "I'm going home" recorded at the Liberty Church in Alababma is an extremely powerful song. I immediately bought Southern Journey, Vol 9 & 10- sacred harp music recored by Alan Lomax in 1959. Its almost too crude to enjoy with a lot of people singing off key but there are some really good songs on them too. I also bought "In Sweetest Union" recorded in 1999 again at the Liberty Church. THAT is a great album that has real church-goin singers, mostly on key, singing with all of their hearts. That is what is missing from Rivers of Delight. No one is off key and I just don't hear the heart that makes sacred harp music so powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and Haunting.......2004-01-08

Words cannot explain the power of this recording. There is something beautiful about shapenote singing, yet it is also a little eerie and unsettling in its deliberate atonality. If you look at the tombstones in any historic cemetery and see how lovely the old carvings are on them - how they are works of art in themselves - you will appreciate that there can be beauty in the most simple of earthly things. That, to me, defines shapenote singing - it is beautiful like old tombstones are beautiful. However talented the singers, shapenote singing should never lose touch with its earthiness. It should be heavenly and yet tied to mortality. The Word of Mouth Chorus are wonderfully talented and polished, yet they sing with an emotionality and spirit that sets this recording apart from so many others. I have several shape note CDs in my collection. All of the others are either too professional, belying shapenote's roots, or too rustic. If you only buy one CD of shapenote music, it should be this one. To this day, the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I hear "Windham" - and that is how it should be.

5 out of 5 stars Shape-note perfection.......2002-07-30

The Word of Mouth Chorus, from Vermont, started out as a "normal" choir, doing standard church choir repertoire. They started singing "shape-note" music shortly after their founding, but the performances sounded like a normal church choir. A few years later, some of the choir members were inroduced to the "real McCoy" at a singing convention in Georgia. The "performance practice", for lack of a better term, of the folks in Georgia had a profound effect on them.

The result was that they completely rethought and relearned how to perform this music. They don't sound like a normal church choir here; they sound raucous and untutored, with loud nasal voices sticking out of a group of other loud, raucous voices. The effect is exhilerating; the drive and energy are like nothing you've ever heard. Other recordings of the shape note music of the Sacred Harp tradition of the American South take the brash rough edges off the tone. Not here -- you get the real deal; raw, edgy, unabashed, and a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars WHEN THE HARP WAS CRUSHED BENEATH THE CROWN .......2006-04-18

The following review is being used to comment on several of the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem recordings. The obvious musical skills, talent and commitment to craftsmanship of this group during its history need no comment by me. Nor does their commitment to keeping alive the Irish folk tradition. Thus, the criterion for review is whether the works represents the political traditions associated with the historic struggle for independence from the English.

A word. As I developed a quasi- leftist political consciousness in my youth I also, in an unsystematic and for the most part then unconscious manner, developed an interest in what is today is called roots music. Initially this was reflected in my first love-the Blues. During the early sixties, under the influence of Dave Van Ronk at first, then Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the rest I developed an interest in folk music, then at the height of its revival. It is through this process that I came to appreciate the work of the artists under review. This is odd, and I will explain why. I was actually reared on the material presented here by my maternal grandfather, a great supporter of the Irish Republican Army. I gained from him my own romantic attachment to the exploits of the IRA in 1916 and beyond until independence. Although my own political evolution since then has led me away from political support to the IRA I still love the old songs which represent the spirit of Irish national identity and aspirations for national liberation historically suppressed by the bloody English.

A word about the songs presented here. The liner notes included with the CD are helpful here. The songs range in subject from `The Rising of the Moon' at the time of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishman, probably the last time that a united, independent, non-sectarian single Irish state was possible, to `Kevin Barry' and `Sean Treacy' just before the partition in 1921, creating the mess that still confronts us politically today. That said, as these lines are being written we are approaching the 90th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The vision that James Connolly and others of a Social Republic proclaimed at the General Post Office still waits. In short, there is still work to be done, North and South, united or as independent states. Listen to these songs to understand where we have come from and why we still need to fight.

5 out of 5 stars Rebellion and transcendence.......2002-04-20

A timeless album from the boys, and a great collection of songs. When I was growing up (in England), just about every household we ever went to had this album - even a lot of English folk music fans loved the Clancies and Tommy M. You can't be a Folk fan and not love Irish music.

My one regret is that this album lacks a traditional version of Wearin' O The Green (the Wolfe Tones covered it on Profile). Like so many classic Irish rebel songs, Rising Of The Moon was written about the 1798 United Irishmen uprising, and is the same air as WOTG, but lyrically it lacks some of The Green's power. WOTG was about the banning of the shamrock and St. Patrick's Day by the English, and when they sang "They're hanging men and women there, for the wearin' o' the green" they weren't kidding.

This beautifully remastered CD contains a very informative booklet, which gives something of the history of each song, and which singer is featured, as well as details about each of the boys, including Pat's former IRA connections. Street cred, or what?

There are so many standout songs here, including Tipperary Far Away (sometimes known as Sean Tracy) and The Wind That Shakes The Barley, which features the golden voice of Tommy Makem. While Tommy's version is quite simply the best rendition ever by a male, the greatest version by a female remains Lisa Gerrard's version on Toward The Within by Dead Can Dance (available through Amazon).

Truly a wonderful album, full of love, passion and ancient wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Early Clancy stuff, seriously presented..........2001-12-30

I have this album on vinyl issued on the Tradition label. There is a story, probably not true, that the boys recorded these songs in their kitchen around l956. It doesn't matter. If you like the Clancys and/or songs of the Irish uprisings, it is a must own. I have played it to death over the years, and had to buy a cassette reissue when my last turntable failed. Undoubtedly, one of these days I will buy this CD to replace the tape. I like almost everything on this collection. These are hymns of death, bravery, oppression, betrayal, guerilla warfare, grief and loss. Doesn't sound like fun, but it is great music. Later in their careers, the Clancys put out some great humorous songs, drinking songs, love songs...but this one is different. If you have an interest in Ireland's struggle against Britain, and sometimes the fight between factions of Irishmen, this is essential.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Music at its best.......2007-01-02

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem brought Irish music to the masses in Ireland as well as America. This album, their third and last before signing with Columbia, is a fine example of their simple early work. With great rebel songs like Brennan on the Moor, Roddy McCorely and Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye, and lullabys like Castle of Dromore and Eileen Aroon, there is something for every Irish fan on this disc. A Great Buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps Zoreb is Stupid........2003-10-06

Caracatures of Pirates, Disneyland included, IS NOT what the Clancy Brothers is about. My Grandmother was from Ulster and sang many of these songs. This is Irish music at it's finest.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe Zoreb's son is stupid.......2002-10-07

Ever think that your son's helmut is strapped too tight? Clancy brothers are a cut above the rest and are pure and wonderful irish folk musicians.

Try taking your son to Pirates of the Carribean in Disneyland then take him to an old Irish Pub where Guiness flies and ol' drunken Irishmen sing...maybe then he'll get it and maybe then you can take the fatherly stance and explain to your son the difference.

3 out of 5 stars are those pirates?.......2002-09-20

I played this CD for my son, aged three, and and he asked me "are those pirates?" I responded that the Clancy Brothers were not pirates, but he persisted. "Are they SAILORS?"

I figure the songs are pretty entertaining, but if a 3-year old can't tell Irish folk singers from sailors or pirates, it can't be all that good.

5 out of 5 stars Another nice compilation of really nice Irish folk.......2002-01-01

The Clancy Brothers are always a winner in the Irish folk arena. Hard to rate them because I like just about everything they do. You can sense that the Brothers and Tommy Makem pour themselves into their music with such feeling and power and it will make you feel proud to be Irish even if you are a Thai Mexican (not necessarily a reflection of the reviewer...hahaha). But in all honesty the music will have you wanting to sing and maybe even drink a few pints of Guiness which, by the way, never hurt anyone from what I hear!

Throw this cd on, pour the Guiness in, and have some fun!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Jordan.......2006-01-04

This collection beautifully and powerfully captures the experiential essence of the African American Spirituals. They are sung just as they were composed--with spontaneous power, group harmony, and personal authenticity.

I listen to the last two songs (Ain't Got Time to Die & Wade in the Water) over and over and over again. Selections 5, 7, 10, 16, and 17 are great for sing-along. Seven more still have appeal. 14 of 19 - a better than average CD!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-01-24

Spirituals as presented in the concert tradition, such as were performed by the Jubilee Singers after the Civil War. As such, they are not intended to sound like "field recordings" (as one reviewer here had apparantly expected) but rather, polished concert performances. The documentation (liner notes, bibliography, etc) is outstanding...one could teach a workshop just using the CD and notes.

If you're seeking a field recording sound, I suggest "I Believe in Angels Singing: Songs from the Underground Railroad Era (Cassette)

3 out of 5 stars Quality recording but not true to form........2000-12-28

This is a nice recording and it is well done. The quality of the music is very good but I was disappointed. All of the pieces are performed by choirs and as such are not true to the spiritual in its purest form. These are songs intended to be sung by people that are weary and heavy laden looking for rest. These are very personal songs which should be sung from the heart by a single voice. If not a single voice, a small group. If you are looking for spirituals sung by a large choir in a tightly controlled environment, this is for you. If you are looking for songs which are sung from the heart and soul, this is not it.

5 out of 5 stars The Voice .......2007-02-08

I got involved with JJ Niles by watching Scorseses Movie about Bob Dylan.
Dylan himself got influenced by Niles and his aproach to folk music. So I
bought this Disc without hesitation.First of all it is music for listeners which haven't lost their abiltiy for music so deep and rich,as it can be.Niles's voice is like this of an angel. But be warned there is no music to dance or snap or listen while driving on the highway.Take your time and get moved forever.Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Essential folk artist.......2007-02-01

John Jacob Niles, "The Dean Of American Balladeers," influenced many who came after him. He was both a musical preservationist and one of the most unique performers of all time. During the 1920s, Niles collected and published Appalachian mountain songs such as "Barbara Allen" and "Pretty Polly." He also wrote "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair." "Go Way From My Window" was penned by him at age 16, yet Niles never performed it until 22 years later. These three compositions are some of the many highlights on: THE TRADITION YEARS * I WONDER AS I WANDER.

Around 1960, John Niles performed on NBC's TODAY Show-- I saw him that morning. Although a very little child, this man's lovely counter-tenor voice and unusual dulcimer really registered with me. About a decade later, I found a scratchy LP copy of this very same album in a thrift shop and it immediately became a favorite.

This high quality CD reissue brings back memories and is a joy to listen to. Recommended for all lovers of traditional folk music.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, Very, Very Good.......2006-03-10

I am so happy to see this reissued. I had a two record collection by Niles on vinyl but lost it over the years. Now so great to hear him sing again. I'm hoping someone will release his ballads in one set so I can once again enjoy his rendition of these great songs. The reviewer who described his voice as "fallen angel" was oh, so right.

5 out of 5 stars true American folk original.......2006-03-05

Rare American folk connoisseurs rejoice! Finally re-issued on CD are the long awaited Tradition label recordings of John Jacob Niles. If you saw the recent Dylan documentary by Martin Scorsese, you won't forget the clip of Niles singing Go Away From My Window. This is a CD of Carols and Love Songs recorded in 1957 (Rev-Ola will be re-issuing My Life in the Public Domain, ballads culled from older 78 rpm recordings later this month, which we'll list when we get it).

Niles, old beyond his years, accompanied by handmade dulcimer, had an intense other-worldly fallen angel like voice that perfectly captures the hauntingly lonely and creepy hill country feel where the bulk of his catalog of songs originated. Niles, like Jean Ritchie, was a folk musicologist and performer from Kentucky who spent his time wandering through isolated American mountain communities collecting folk songs, or scraps of melodies and lyrics, embellishing them with his own inventive arrangements and often fleshing them out by writing additional verses. For example, his version of "Black Is the Colour of My True Love's Hair" has become the definitive arrangement for all versions following (from Nina Simone to Patty Waters), because while he loved the verse he disliked the original tune. This is why folk historians have had a famously difficult time classifying which songs in Niles repertoire are originals or reinventions of songs in the public domain. Some people may be turned off by Niles high-alto voice (At times he can look and sound like the evil preacher man in Poltergeist II), but don't let that hinder you from exploring the work of a true American folk original whose recordings have finally been made available to folks who cannot afford the hundreds of dollars his albums go for on eBay. Fans of Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, and Anthony & the Johnsons take note!
