The Nigerian king of highlife music has been recording since the '60s, and these sides, made between 1970-75, work to capture the essence of his music--which is nothing less than the groove itself. From the first beat, his band, the Nigerian Soundmakers, locks onto a groove and hangs on like a group of pit bulls, whether on the very African "Oyolima" or "Gwam Okwu," which funks as if they'd just heard James Brown or Sly Stone for the first time--which maybe they had. Chief Stephen himself, on vocals, might be upfront part of the time, but the power of the musicians is what really carries everything here--the horns, and especially the lead guitar of Ezekiel Uti, who seems as happy playing chords and using his wah-wah pedal as letting loose on solos. Great Songs, Just As You Remember Them!.......2007-05-30

I remember my father listening to Roger Miller when I was 6 or 7 years old. He had a small reel to reel tape that we took to the beach with us. It was the kind where you had to feed the tape onto the empty reel, and then rewind it when it was done. I know, dinosaur technology, but I have fond memories of those days.

This album of Roger Miller's best songs sound as great today as they did back in the 1960s. I've had "King of the Road" stuck in my head for days, thanks to this album. I also love the aw-shucks sound of "Dang Me", "Chug A Lug" and "Do Wacka Do". My kids loved listening to "You Can't Roller Skate In a Buffalo Herd" until I actually refused to play it again.

Not all Miller's songs are funny or nonsensical, though. He sings about heartbreak and true love in "In the Summertime" and "Little Green Apples". He also does an impressive version of "Me and Bobby McGee".

In all, there are 20 classic Roger Miller songs on this album. There's also a great CD insert telling about Miller's life and his untimely death from throat cancer. I was surprised to read that Miller wrote most of his own songs, and that he was a gifted fiddle player and guitarist. So take a walk down memory lane - anyone who grew up in the 60s will remember these songs! And it's great that his albums can entertain another generation.

This album is better than I remembered. I was not a country western fan in the late 70s and 80s, but I did have a Roger Miller album than used to get into the mix now and then. I remember liking it more than I expected so I ordered a new copy recently and was surprised at how much more I enjoy it now.

Marty Robbins has more greatest-hits compilations than most artists have hits. This 20-cut single-disc collection is one of the better values, with a representative selection that extends from gunfighter balladry such as "El Paso" (his 1959 chart-topper and biggest crossover success) and "Big Iron" to the calypso-tinged "Devil Woman" to his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's folkish "Ribbon of Darkness." Throughout his 30-year recording career, Robbins combined a tremulous tenor with canny commercial instincts, stretching the boundaries of country music while expanding his popular base. He was equally at home with a cowboy song ("Red River Valley"), a gospel tune ("You Gave Me a Mountain"), and a slice of Hawaiian exotica ("Aloha Oe"). Inexplicably, the album features the schmaltzy "Love Is Blue" at the expense of "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)," a '50s pop smash that remained one of his biggest hits. --Don McLeese

Marty Robbins believed he was a reincarnated cowboy. Many of his songs came from dreams. All 20 of these wonderful songs take you to another place and time and tell delicious stories of love and adventure. Wonderful places to go - especially if you're a true Marty Robbins fan.

Mixed Emotions.......2004-11-30

You can take any given number of Marty Robbins songs and call them his greatest hits as the man had talent and versatility to spare. Certainly most of the songs on this package are exceptional but there are so many left out. "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)", perhaps his greatest crossover hit is missing in favor of Hank Williams, Sr.'s "Kaw-Liga" (done to death) and the so-so "Maria (If I Could"). And the hit doesn't even appear on the follow-up album of "more greatest hits". What were they thinking? Early hits "I Couldn't Keep From Crying" and "The Story of My Life" are not here. And on it goes. You will probably enjoy most or all of the songs herein but if you can find it, it's better to go for "The Essential Marty Robbins 1951-1982" that covers some hokey early recordings before he hit his stride plus the ones named, other certified HITS and songs that were only mild hits or not hits at all but are a lot more rewarding to listen to than the less-than-blockbuster filler found here. Shop around before you buy.

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Missing Some Major Duets!! .......2005-07-26

These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West?? Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke, to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore. Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one.

I was introduced to this music by a coworker and I really like it! I've always been a fan of celtic music, but this is like celtic on espresso. It's very upbeat and truly unique. I highly recommend it - enjoy!!

My aunt put this in the car one day when we were driving to my uncle's house. I had just played the song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" from Inside Man, and she said I bet you'll like this, it's a lot of the same style. As soon as she put it on, "North" came on, and absolutely blew me away. The beautiful ambient sounds and the sparse, yet undeniably enchanting African vocals were just beautiful. By the time "North Part 2" came on, we were both drumming our hands and dancing in the car. Whoever thought of mixing African and Celtic music, then setting it to a rave/techno beat is a genius.

She bought me the CD (and also "Seed, which is great too), and I've been listening to it obsessively since. I know it's now a cliche so rate this CD 5 stars, but the beautiful, haunting melodies and the catchy, rythmic tehcno beats make this CD one of the best in my collection. It was a great find for me especially, since I'm getting sick of all the horrible pop/rock/rap that's out there. If you're like me, and you're sick of all "today's hits" and are looking for something to dance to and have a great time listening to, BUY THIS ALBUM! It is something very fresh and amazing. Aah, North 2 just came on with that awesome celtic instrument riff and dance club style techno beat. I gotta get back to dancing!

Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Jim Reeves At His Best.......2006-11-12

I usually do not write reviews (I don't do concerts either) but this one I could not pass up. If for whatever reason at the end of a hard day you need to relax, listen to this CD. The music has a most soothing effect and when it is over I feel real good. I am an avid Jim Reeves fan and his beautiful voice is always the key, but the song selections on this disc are wonderful.

We love Jim Reeves and his music. We just returned from a visit to a hospice where a close friend of ours is dying. We played it in our car going and coming. It is quite comforting.

The recording is excellent. Many of the songs I have heard before but there are some good ones that I haven't. I would recommend this to any Jim Reeves fan. I rated it 4 stars because I have the "Essential Jim Reeves" and I feel it deserves the 5 stars. This one isn't quite as good.
