VIVALDI, PACHELBEL GO POP... "In which Vivaldi meets The Ventures as Quebec based quartet The Baronics give some popular classics the surfing sound of clean, bright Fender guitars. Doubtless pursits of both stripes will disapprove of this disc, however for those prepared to loosen their muscal stays a little there is a lot of good clean fun to be had (not to mention the potential for confounding people's expectations at parties - put this on and watch the cratched heads and baffled expressions). What particularly impressed me about his record is the fidelity with which the originals are approached: both the notes and the spirit are captured. Pachelbel's famous Canon comes off particularly well, but then so does The Four Seasons. In fact so enjoyable did I find this fresh take on the work which is in danger of becoming hackneyed... Nigel Kennedy, eat your heart out! This is not the first time that the classics have been treated to a rock 'n' roll backbeat and I dare say it won't be the last. Few, though, tend to be done with anything like the skill and affection evident here."

Great CD, easy consumption of the classics.......2004-07-14

I heard this CD while wandering around a music store in Philly; it was the ONLY music I bought while I was in college. It's a shame more of the Baronics' CDs aren't released in the USA. Often, great classical music is poorly performed -- this both inventive and well done. Even people who hate classical music love this CD. Buy it, you won't regret it.

A wonderful twist on some classics..........2000-12-26

I stumbled across the Baronics' "Pachelbel's Kanon" one afternoon on Spinner.com's surf music channel and loved it immediately. I had been planning on using instrumental surf music at my wedding reception and I was trying to pick out some music to buy. When I heard "Kanon," I thought, "Wow I can use surf music for the ceremony too!" The Baronics, who hail from Quebec Canada, cover several well know classical pieces in a unique and innovative way that feels more like classical guitar rather than twangy, harder-edged, traditional surf music. That is not to say that this is some kind "easy listening" type of surf music. The music is fun and whimsical, and is equally good in your car or at a formal event. All of my guests raved about how meaningful and yet so unique it was. Because they are not widely known and their CD's aren't released in this country, I found that the album was somewhat difficult to track down and was backordered for several weeks. But if you decide to order it, don't worry, it is certainly worth the wait.
