5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Love Songs.......2005-06-17

Even though many of the songs may sound better in the original Portuguese, this album puts together some of the best of the Bossa Nova love songs. All of the artists are terrific, especially Sylvia Telles, Lani Hall (of Sergio Mendes fame), Milton Nascimento, and others. It definitely grows on you. Also, it's good therapy music after a bad day.

4 out of 5 stars I picked this one up cold and what a pleasure..........2005-07-19

I wanted some up to date contemporary Brazilian jazz, after becoming weary of the endless stream of Jobim and Sergio Mendes
reissues. This disc delivers just that! With an array of artists complementing each song just right. The acoustic charged selections feature talented guitarist Romero Lubambo on Jason Miles arrangements. The tropical feel of the album covers
Brazilian moods from bossa to funk, all nicely sequenced for maximum pleasure. Percussion and synthesizers abound! There are guest contributions from Herbie Mann, Gato Barbieri, Michael Brecker and others. Jason Miles formula gives us a good background mood for whatever! Though every aspect of this project is expertly performed, none of the
tracks are truly memorable, thus my four star rating.

Let's face it, if you play jazz harmonica you've got to deal with the shadow of Toots Thielemans. German-born Hendrik Meurkens faces up with Thielemans well, with a fluent, saxophonelike phrasing. On this date, he's backed by pianist Dodo Maroni, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb, and bassist Chris Berger. Meurkens and company deliver straight-ahead, no-nonsense jazz with strong bop touches. "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" swings with an Ahmad Jamal-tinged arrangement; "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and Charlie Parker's "Scrapple from the Apple" dance on bebop and Latin lines. Meurkens's lyricism on the ballad "My Foolish Heart" beautifully bridges Lester Young and Benny Carter in its phrasing and shows that he stands above the inevitable comparisons with Toots. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Harmonica & Jazz?.......2001-02-11

I have too admit I am not a jazz harmonica fan. Yes,I've heard Toots, but he does'nt really do it for me. So you can imagine my surprise when I found myself drawn to the sounds of Hendrick Meurkens! The sound is relaxed and sophisticated. He shares ample space with sax man Eric Alexander, and a wonderful rhythm section. Harmonica & Jazz? Well I have too admit that I have practically worn this CD out in the first two months of ownership. If you like Hardbop & Cool Jazz, buy this! It's a "10"...

5 out of 5 stars Another Roundup of His Classics.......2006-04-19

If you're a long time Jobim fan (or just a fan of music) - you'll have all these tracks scattered across various CD's and LP's - if you want a roundup of his some of his greatest romantic/chill/ lounge and quiet bossa tracks - this is really another greatest hits package. The version of DINDI is backed by Astrud Gilberto. Elis Regina joins him on a couple tracks also. For longtime fans who might want a convenient CD to put in the car or have ready a romantic evening CD with his "quiet" classics, no reason not to add this to your collection. For new fans, this is a great starter CD but you'll be buying many more of Jobim's - no reason not to start with this one :-)

3 out of 5 stars Weird Combination of Stuff.......2003-10-21

This is an interesting CD. While the selections and arrangements were top rated, The performance was inconsistent. The average score overall will be a fair 3 stars.

From the album title, I suppose it is an album with Brazilian festivity. Yes, the supporting musicians were twisting, but our main player Ms. Robison was not.

Ms. Robison has very beautiful yet mild tone for most part of the album. Her attitude & sound is very suitable for French compositions, not Brazilian. (Her album with Ruth Laredo is a much better one). For a high energy, fast tempo South American music selected here, she need to step out from her moderate classic box and have more excitement! Sometime, I sense that she was out of breath, trying to catch up with her fellow musicians.

Flute itself is not an instrument to produce large sound. It can, however, give appropriate light and shade. From Pixinguinha's year, flute has proven to be an adequate instrument for small Brazilian music ensemble. A modern example will be James Galway's excellent Latin selection: Tango Del Fuego, which overcome limit of tube and offered dazzling flavors.

The slower pieces in the album are where her specialty comes. With sensible intonation and subtle expression, this album can be enjoyable here and there. Too bad most songs requires dynamics and spirit of dances which Ms. Robison did not provide.

Names of songs in this albums were translated (or transformed) from Brazilian to English. I do not understand why. Maybe the arranger thought once the songs were re-configured, they deserve new names. But this cannot explain why spices were missing.

If you like Paula Robison, go for her classic CDs. There are a lot of excellent ones to choose from. You can skip this album, and miss almost nothing.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!.......2003-08-18

This has been one of my most played CDs ever, and I am usually a rock and roll fan! The music is fun, beautiful, upbeat yet soothing. All instruments are played wonderfully, and the flute is just phenomenal. Great music for all occasions and all tastes. Makes me happy just thinking about it.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection of Talent.......1999-12-18

Rio Days Rio Nights is my 1st exposure to Paula Robison and her flute. This CD is a masterfully engineered collection of Latin-flavored smooth jazz tunes performed by a group of very talented musicians. What a talent Ms. Robison is. I give this CD a very enthusiastic two thumbs up! (both hands)

Vibraphonist Cal Tjader was a pioneer in mating the cool textures of West Coast jazz with Afro-Cuban and Latin beats, creating effervescent music with percussion in the foreground. This CD combines two LPs recorded live at San Francisco's Black Hawk in 1958 and 1959. The earlier session has a band loaded with future stars, including pianist Vince Guaraldi and a superb rhythm section, with the big-toned bassist Al McKibbon and the percussion duo of Willie Bobo on drums and Mongo Santamaría on congas. Little-known Cuban tenor player José "Chumbo" Silva is a key presence as well, with a sound that suggests Stan Getz and a taut rhythmic edge. Guaraldi, Bobo, and Santamaría turn "I Love Paris" into a riveting tempest of percussion, while "Night in Tunisia" is an extended flight into Afro-Cuban bop. The later set focuses more on Tjader's lyrical side with a straight-ahead quartet and a program emphasizing standards. His shimmering sound and liquid phrasing are well matched with the boppish pianist Lonnie Hewitt. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great content, weak acoustics.......2005-03-23

I'm very fond of Cal (not Carl) Tjader's music and own a half dozen albums of his. Although I really enjoyed the arrangments and the playing on this disc, it sounds as if the microphones were too far away from the musicians during the recording.

This is not uncommon with live recordings from this era, several Charlie Parker albums disappoint in this dimension as well. One could only wish for a time machine to go back and rerecord because the music was right and the bands were tight.

For anyone considering a purchase, listen to the samples before purchasing. Or order something more recent from Cal. He was one of the greats and we owe a lot to him for popularizing Latin music way ahead of his time!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic re-issue.......2000-09-16

Just when I thought I was going to have to rely on my used Fantasy albums (in that beautiful red translucent vinyl)from now on (they couldn't possibly know these were the two albums I most wanted to see paired in a re-issue!)- what do they do but read my mind and put out this splendid disc. It really is a dream come true to have two classic Tjader albums together like this. The music is that ultra sophisticated sound we have come to love with piano, vibes and a gorgeous sax among other treats. If you love 50's small group jazz you have to have this.
