Taking as its source the album
Alger, Alger by Arab-Occidental-Jewish singer-guitarist Lili Boniche (discovered playing in a Paris café at age 78),
Boniche Dub is producer Bill Laswell's reinterpretation of an interesting confluence of musical genres. Taking five of the original tracks, Laswell applies his usual swirling, almost psychedelic, techniques to create an ambient pastiche of pan-Andalusian-Algerian textures and beats. Taking nearly all of the vocals out and building trancelike vehicles from the rhythm tracks, Laswell leaves the listener floating in a mistral breeze of bass and percussion while melodies weave in and out of the mix in a manner similar to the productions of the late, great dubmaster from Jamaica, King Tubby. These hybrid mutations seemingly have little form, nor do they go anywhere in particular, as their purpose is to enhance a sense of being or place. Recommended for late-night headphone listening.

the best in french algerian/ dub.......2005-02-21
This album is simply breathtaking lili is the best french algerian singer ever, smooth guitar playing and an incredible band. He knew what he was doing getting laswell on his 1st album alger alger too. well laswell has yet again instilled all of us into the quantum physics of dub-in. Their are only 2 songs Alleche tu ne m'aimes pas and il n'y a qu'an seul dieu he didnt dub fron alger but still he had his reasons. He goes through all the regular tricks and effects used in all his stuff with his right hand man their robert musso helping with the tweeks. Lili if youve hever heard him playes algerian music so it has lots of excellent percussion semi cuban but with a flair of itz own, smooth as silk guitar playing marvelious piano playing from marice el mediono, mandolin by hakim hamadouche, maurice sellem on violin and armand suiss on the darbouk. their are also live drums that are not credited on this release, they are the same drums from alger but are also uncredited on that release and mr. gregoire garrigues who shared the bass playing with laswell on the alger does so here on the 1st 3 then half of 4 tracks but im not sure itz him it sounds like laswell. in the liner knots it says it only took them 2 live sessions to create the masterfull alger alger thats unheard of. now ive read some reviews from people that say this album isnt really dub due to the light bass playing. well that semi true gregoire played the same light bass for the first 3 and a half making it almost like a 3 part song with fluxuating instrumentz then laswell kicking it in with his dub bass that continues to the rest of the album except the last 2. itz kinda like the shine album with shin terai and laswell which was a remix project from the shin terai unison album. shine is 1 drum beat that continues trought the album with all the guitar and keys fron unison melding to that same beat but you can skip from difernt tracks. the same is kinda true here all songs bass are semi similar but their are verry drastic changes in the rythm and instrumentz. but the last two songs are from a live performance at the elysee montmartre and they are verry algerian with no singing and no dub effects but they are amazing. But laswell stayz verry true to alger not changing much just adding effects and more rythm aditionz & like alger he only addz his bass at the end of the album & respectz the original bass. but all in all this is one of the best albums of all time lili has been mostelly removed from this album but he peaks in from time to time. lots of echo/effects and classic laswell dubbinz. now with what i was talikng about before with the complaints from this album laswell has rescentelly released boniche dub II exclusivelly from apc.fr website. that is the best album ive ever heard in my whole life and i mean it. The songs from dub II come from the also apc only lili boniche album oeuvrs recentes & itz amazing, every song and every second is the most astounding thing ive ever heard (im actually refering to both. lotz more styles on it too, their is a really blues-z dub number on it. this one will never leave your player. enjoy
fanz of buena vista social club will enjoy, and their bass players album. classic laswell fanz of imaginary cuba and havana mood will dig.
Dark jewel.......1999-11-15
Producer Jean Touitou uses the term "ambient dub" to describe this album, but the Amazon reviewer hits closer to the mark by comparing the material to King Tubby's mid-to-late Seventies deconstructions. Although everything has been stripped down, each track retains its individual melodic and rhythmic flavors - the piano and guitar parts are used judiciously to maintain the themes, while bass and percussion remain in constant conversation with each other, and Boniche's voice, eerily dubbed but not stripped of its own purity, unexpectedly drops into the mix. This is a dark jewel, a representation of what Laswell can do when he gets close to the music.

Algerian dub.......2000-06-19
Laswell dubs this his own way. Rather than attempting to impose structures on the original tracks, he brought out the essential spirit of each performance (it's been said that there is a connection between 'dub' and 'duppy', a Jamaican folk term for a malevolent spirit), retaining enough of the vocals and other melodic parts to identify each piece, but primarily focusing on creating a haze of atmosphere around the rhythm instruments, arranging the sounds into blocks of structure. The last two tracks are taken from a live performance given at the Elysee Montmartre, and illustrate the faithfulness to the original tracks within Laswell's creativity.
