Album Description

The guitar has played a major part in the evolution of Brazilian music, especially during the twentieth century. On this recording the charm, beauty and sensuality of Brazilian guitar music can be heard in pieces as diverse as Marco Pereira's Pixaim, a fast rhythmic dance originating from North-East Brazil, João Pernambuco's cheeky Blackbird, the classic song Girl from Ipanema by Antonio Carlos Jobim, a founder of the Bossa Nova movement and, from Brazil's most famous composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, the hauntingly lyrical Sentimental Melody, written for the film Green Mansions in 1957. Award winning guitarist, Graham Anthony Devine was born in England and, in his teens, moved to Brazil where he has become an established performer and teacher, giving many recitals and masterclasses throughout South America. He is a laureate of many international guitar competitions in Europe and the United States.

Lesser known guitarist wins me over.......2005-04-07

I got this disc on an impulse, trying to add to my slowly growing collection of classical guitar music. This is one impulse buy I do not regret! The selections are very mellow and relaxing, and they seem to mesh together well as if logically following one another. Graham Anthony Devine is truly "Devine" in my book. His technique is awe-inspiring, and his phrasing is subtle and precise. It's obvious he is enjoying himself a great deal playing this music. His disc has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. As a guitarist he ranks right up there with the very best and can easily be compared to John Williams or Pepe Romero, among others. Highly recommended!

I've been listening to this CD for many years and it only gets better with time. Pour a glass of really good cab that has great depth, sit back and take 30 minutes to really enjoy ana and the experience of the very best listening you will ever find.

Uncommon Gems.......2003-02-22

The recording (I have the gold version) and performance are first rate. I also own her 'Amazonia' (which I like very much) and believe this is a superior performance. The selections are mostly laid-back with spare instrumentation....and oh...that chesky sound! Why don't more recording studios capture sound like this? These tunes have a different flair from the popular Jobim output....but they are masterfully and tastefully done. Tom would be proud.

Great CD!!.......2006-05-11

I love everything about Brazil; the music of that country really touches me. I knew about Luiza because I heard one of her songs in a Brazilian soap opera (Mulheres Apaixonadas) and I love it, then I decided to do a little research about her career, her albums and I loved her songs so I decided to buy it and I'm really happy I did it. Eu soy assim is a wonderful CD!

This CD featuring for the first time the complete cycle of Enescu's Piano Suites must be considered as one of the most pleasant surprises of 2004. The quality of these three compositions is eminent (as expected from someone of Enescu's stature!) and Luiza Borac's performance is simply incredible. Not only totally convincing but also utterly mesmerizing. A virtuoso of the highest class, Luiza Borac also captivates us through her joy, subtility, charm and sensitivity. Undoubtedly, this release will prove to be an enduring tribute to Enescu's monumental music.

Remarkable music from Brasil.......2005-07-23

Luciana Soares is a child prodigy pianist from Goiais, Brasil, a seemingly unlikely origin for such a miraculous young pianist. She studied with the best pedagogue in Brasil, tracing her pedagogic lineage directly to Franz Liszt. She taught at a prominent conservatory in Brasil. She holds Master and PhD degrees in music, and on this CD performs music she has personally compiled from 19th and 20th Century Brazilian women composers, some trained, some naturals, all remarkable. Dr. Soares studied the music and the composers extensively and interviewed several of them. Some of this music had never been published or performed, to my understanding, and it runs a wide gamut of popular, folk, and classical. With a Brazilian musical soul, and an Hungarian pedagogical pedigree, Dr. Soares is a completely uncanny pianist. She performs a vast repetoire of classical music (one has not lived until hearing her perform such music as Liszt's "Dance of the Trolls", or Villa Lobos' "Valse Triste", or Ravel or Prokofiev, Guarnieri, or Beethoven variations, and we're avidly awaiting more CD's of her performances). The short pieces she performs here are definitive performances of absolutely wonderful music, melodic, rythmic, evocative, visual, moving, and fun, of the best quality of Brazilian music. Who knew there were so many marvelous Brazilian composers. Recent Brazilian popular music is of course widely known here, and widely played, from The Girl from Ipenema and all of Jobim, to Brazilian popular classics, performed often by American jazz artists (the late Stan Getz perhaps foremost). But this music is mostly new to the US, and stunning. Truly a remarkable gift from Brasil. Listen to Branca Bilhar's Samba Sertanejo (and you can't possibly sit still, you have to move with the music), Fernandes' Preludio and Valsa, Pereira da Silva's Valsa-Choro No. 2, and Chiquinha Gonzaga's mysteriously melodic Corta-Jaca, and Atraente. Anyone who has heard Arturo Lima, the great Russian trained Brazilian Pianist, perform, for example, Ernesto Nazareth's marvelous Choro's, or Baden Powell performing Villa Lobos' Choro No. 1, will immediately recognize that Luciana Soares is of the same standard here, dare one say even superior, and more authentically Brazilian, than these. She has an expressive capacity that is riveting. She communicates more directly and more powerfully with her audience than any pianist that I have ever heard perform, including Emmanual Ax, Murray Peria, Mischa Dichter, Horowitz, Alicia de la Rocha, Eteri Andjaparidze. One gets a sense that she is channeling the spirits of the composers when she performs. One feels the music from inside. She combines a virtuosos technical ability with an apparently intuitive (but perhaps more from extensive study and hard-won insight--it only seems to be intuitive when she performs it, a testament to her artistry) understanding of the music, and an ability to communicate it, that I have never before heard. I would unreservedly recommend this music to anyone who enjoys piano performance, Brazilian music, folk, popular, classical music, or wants to hear something new and remarkable.
