There are in my opinion, only two really good tracks on the whole CD. I would not recommend the CD.

My kinda music.
Joyce is a very good musician...

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-10

She just keeps getting better, with each CD. Her guitar playing is awesome.
She is defintley a mainstay in my "smooth jazz" library!

5 out of 5 stars Joyce Cooling - Revolving Door.......2007-01-04

I feel that this CD is great. It suites my needs wery well. Unlike many music CD's that I purchase, I am most sure that I will enjoy it for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Cooling is cool!.......2006-11-10

From the first time I heard a Joyce Cooling album back in the mid to late 90's, I've been hooked. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been privileged to see her in concert many times, most recently in Sonoma County on October 1 with Bobby Caldwell. "Revolving Door" maintains the high quality of all her previous albums. I especially love to hear Joyce sing, and the songs "Little Sister" and "I'll Always Love You" are highlights for me on this album. But it all sounds great; an album to listen to over and over again, to put on the iPod, or on the stereo anytime. Her albums neither get tiring nor grow old with repeated listenings. Rather, they just sound better every time they're played!

5 out of 5 stars Rivals Wide-Eyed for Nordeman's Best.......2007-06-20

Brave is one of Nichole Nordeman's best songs AND albums. Her music is more refined and has greater depth than many other artists.

5 out of 5 stars Brave is the best yet.......2006-12-15

I bought the CD for the title track which has had a profound influence on me. The other songs on the CD show an incredible depth and spirituality that only come through struggle and perseverance.

1 out of 5 stars Brave-Nicole Nordeman.......2006-10-16

I personally only like one song on this album and that is the first one. The rest of the songs I think are boring. I like the slow pace of the songs but they lack alot of melody and chorus for all the other songs.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.....MY NEW FAVORITE CHRISTIAN FEMALE VOCALIST.......2006-06-12

We sang tonight along with the music of Nichole Nordeman at our church Praise and Worship service. Crying with joy and sadness over the words to "Hold On", it became apparent to me that we never know where, when and how we will find the love of God. I can't wait to order the entire album of "Brave". This young woman not only sings with joy, but tells us the truth about a grace we cannot afford to reject!!!!! We all want to lead a whole and everlasting life.

4 out of 5 stars First time Listener loves Nichole's passion for God!.......2006-06-12

I'm 39, have only heard Nichole Nordeman ONCE and that was months ago on a music choice digital cable channel I believe. I have listened to mostly secular music with some christian pop/rock/r&b etc mixed in on a regular basis but very recently that has CHANGED! Now it's overwhelmingly christian music and some secular music. With that happening my life I have found Nichole Nordeman by checking out a christian album thread on a website and decided to check out her samples on amazon!

I listen to Woven and Spun enjoying alot of what I heard but THIS album Brave is fantastic!! I absolutely love her remake of "Gotta Serve somebody" and don't find the techno style of it in the least bit "dumb" like some reviewer did. In fact the techno feel of it makes me LOVE IT that much more! It's different and more contemporary then her last album. I also enjoy "No more Chains" and think the chorus is very moving! "Doxology" is awesome as is "Hold On".

I listen to DC Talk, Plumb, Kirk Franklin, Demon Hunter, Kutless so my tastes vary and I recommend Nichole's cd to ANYONE of ANY age who just likes good music especially music with God in the songs! Please don't let the bad reviews get in your way either, check out her cd for yourself!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars State of the Art of Conducting.......2007-07-10

Just a few minutes of listening to Il Complesso Barocco, conducted by Alan Curtis, will convince you that there really is an "authentic" Baroque style, evidenced by grace and flexibility, resulting in passion. This performance is the best of the several recent CD releases of Handel oratorios and operas, far more polished than Gardiner's Agrippina, Abete's Fernando, or Petros Magoulas's Arianna. The latter two in particular sound stuffy and bulky, like grandmama's oaken furniture, in comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional cast..........2007-05-27

A well directed Baroque opera and an exceptional cast. We have here some of the best Baroque singers. Marijana Mijanovic in particular : she dares to sing in her very own way, originally, taking risks only few artists dare to run and the result is nothing short of outstanding. The dark voiced contralto surprised with her unusual timbre as well as her unique way of vocalising (let us not forget that she's fully capable of vocalising in a more traditional fashion as in the Arcadian duets directed by Haim, but rather she has the courage to make the arias hers... special stand outs to her). Joyce DiDonato sings well and has a fine technique, but I don't find her singing quite original. Nevertheless she's exciting and shines as well here. In other words, the performances of miss Mijanovic are not only outstanding, but of the most surprisingly original. If you've not heard of that contralto, get ready to be moved that androgynous voice which will most certainly leave you perplexed.

5 out of 5 stars Get it for DiDonato.......2007-05-27

The performance by Joyce DiDonato is worth the price of this album. The rest of the cast is moderate to great. The work as a whole is worth hearing. Again though, it is the contribution of Joyce DiDonato that really stands out.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound!.......2007-05-19

The sound quality is the best I've ever heard on a march CD -- bright and crisp -- no muffled cymbals here, but also no overly-brassy brass. I'm not too keen on some of the selections (The Virginians, Barnum and Bailey's), but others (like Americans We) are truly beautiful. Create your own playlist and go out for a walk to this music -- just great!

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise from the Army Band........2005-08-15

The Forward March CD is a great collection of marches. I have listened to the CD three times in the last few weeks and my students have replayed the CD over and over at the band room. A worthwhile addition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Altissimo! Finally Has a Winner!.......2005-08-02

Finally a CD from Altissimo! of decent length with a solid march program. Instead of the usual patriotic dribble that we normally get on this label at last we have some real marches! Many of the selections are well known, but there are a few gems here. The performances are first-rate as to be expected by this premier band. For a change it looks like Altissimo! put together a winner from the extensive library of the bands' recorded music. Most likely none of the pieces played here are current recordings, but are taken from the bands own library which is what Altissimo! does with all of their products. In other words this is not an original recording. Still, the material is good and worthwhile. The program notes are better than usual as well. Altissimo! is slowly getting more professional in their products. Its been a gradual process indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Foward March! America's Great Marches.......2005-05-08

FORWARD MARCH!IS A NATIONAL TREASURE!

THE 17 GREATEST AMERICAN MARCHES? THEY ARE RECREATED ON THIS NEW CD BY THE U.S. ARMY BAND, "PERSHING'S OWN".

FOR 130 YEARS THESE 17 NATIONAL MARCHES HAVE "INSPIRED US, MARCHED TROOPS INTO FORMATION, CELEBRATED OUR NATIONAL PRIDE", AND ENTERTAINED US IN CONCERT. NOW FORWARD MARCH! SHOWCASES AMERICA'S GREATEST PATRIOTIC MARCHES-EACH MARCH WRITTEN WITH PRIDE BY AN AMERICAN AND PERFORMED FLAWLESSLY IN EVERY SENSE BY THE U.S. ARMY BAND UNDER LEADER AND COMMANDER COLONEL GARY F. LAMB.

COL LAMB HAS INCLUDED THE MARCHES THAT I THINK WOULD MAKE ANYONE'S "A LIST", SUCH AS OUR NATIONAL MARCH, SOUSA'S "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" AND THE ESSENTIAL "WASHINGTON POST". BUT SINCE A CONSTANT 120 BEATS PER MINUTE "MARCH TEMPO" CAN BECOME MONOTONOUS(IF YOU'RE NOT MARCHING!), COL LAMB HAS INCLUDED THE COMPLEX (AND DIFFICULT!) "COMMANDO MARCH" BY SAMUEL BARBER(WHOSE MUSIC WAS USED IN THE MOVIE PLATOON) AND THE VERY SLIGHTLY SLOWER PACED "WASHINGTON GRAYS" , THE OLDEST MARCH IN THIS COLLECTION(1861) TO CHANGE THE PACE-LITERALLY. "WASHINGTON GRAYS", LIKE "COMMANDO MARCH" IS A CONCERT MARCH. IT HAS MANY CONTRASTS IN MOOD AND DYNAMICS, WHICH COL LAMB AND THE BAND DEMONSTRATE SUBERBLY, USING ANY OPPORTUNITY THE MUSIC PRESENTS FOR CREATING CONTRAST AND INTEREST --VERY IMPORTANT WHEN THE CD CONTAINS ONLY ONE GENRE! EACH MARCH IS TREATED WITH THE SAME CARE AND IN SOME PASSAGES ALMOST REVERENCE. VIRTUOSITY IS EFFORTLESS---THE HARD SOUNDS EASY! EXAMPLES ARE THE FAMOUS PICCOLOS IN "STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER" , AND THE BARITONE/FRENCH HORNS(HEROIC INSTRUMENTS!) AS THEY ENJOY THE HIGH TESTOSTERONE OPENING FANFARE OF "THE VIRGINIANS" (THE LATTER MARCH IS THE YOUNGEST IN THE GROUP(1992), BUT IT CLEARLY DESERVES MEMBERSHIP.)

"THE CHIMES OF LIBERTY", "NATIONAL EMBLEM", AND "AMERICANS WE", WERE CLEARLY COMPOSED WITH NATIONAL PRIDE ---AND ON THIS CD THE PREMIER MUSICAL ORGANIZATION OF THE U.S. ARMY PERFORMS THEM WITH PARTICULAR PRIDE .

THESE "GREAT 17" MARCHES, OUR NATIONAL MUSICAL TREASURES, ARE HONORED ONCE MORE, AND INSPIRE US ONCE MORE THANKS TO THE SKILL AND DEVOTION OF THE U.S. ARMY BAND AND IT'S LEADER COLONEL LAMB. WELL DONE SOLDIERS!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FORWARD MARCH!
RON BOWERS

5 out of 5 stars Forward March! .......2005-05-04

FORWARD MARCH! is an enjoyable and stimulating album which provides an unusual mix of traditional marches and not often heard compositions.

The United States Army Band is magnificent in its superb technical presentation of the broad spectrum of music contained on the CD and that unquestionably makes it worth acquiring.

Altissimo! Recordings once again educates listeners, as it did in HAIL TO THE CHIEF, by exposing them to pieces which have historical as well as musical significance. It carefully points out those works which are parade marches versus concert marches --- describing the Washington Grays as the "forerunner" of the latter.

The documentation which accompanies the CD provides a brief but tantalizing sense of who or what prompted the composition. Consequently, a far better appreciation for each selection is the result. The overall effect is a noteworthy collection of thoroughly enjoyable music for all to hear!

FORWARD MARCH! is a must for those who enjoy the uplifting of spirit which the march as a style of music provides!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius............2004-03-01

I have to believe that 'Keeping Cool' will live on as one of the greatest Smooth Jazz works ever produced - "Before Dawn" is but one example of what makes this album brilliant.

It's a staple in any Smooth Jazz collection.

1 out of 5 stars ýProgramming byýý.......2001-04-07

These words should be a warning sign to anyone who actually likes music. I didn't notice the review from our friend in Chicago, or I would have passed this one by. I don't care much for even "good" drum and bass programming, but this CD is awful. Scanning the credits, I noticed real drums and bass on track 9. I skipped ahead and it started off nice. Joyce Cooling appears to be a truly gifted artist. Then what sounded like additional synth bass started. I thought some kid was driving by with the windows rolled down. Struggling to get through the song, I was rewarded with the worst electronic hand clapping on record. The delay between the left and right channels was enough to split my head open. Just say NO to programming and pass on this CD.

Regretfully

5 out of 5 stars Highly Impressed.......2001-02-28

What planet have I been on the last few years.I was just recently introduced to this work of art and I must say, this is guitar playing and scatting at its best. J. Cool gives Benson a run for his money. The melodies offer a soothing result when combined with smooth vocals. I consider myself a very hard critic on music, but this disc (artist) I am extremely impressed by.Your jazz collection won't be complete without it.

4 out of 5 stars Almost there ..... but not quite........2000-09-28

Great guitar work, good tunes, decent vocals. What's the downside? Too much reliance on the synthesized rhythm section and keyboards. When you've got a great sound (and Cooling does) why smother it with electronics? Hire a few more studio side men and open up the sound. Mind you, I'm a big fan of what electronic instruments can do for jazz, especially "smooth" jazz, but on this CD the MIDI bass lines and keyboard fills really distract from the main event.

A Very Good CD! Got plenty of upbeat music and I don't have a problem with her vocals, but I was abit taken aback abit in the later tracks as her voice tended to bear a resemblence to Shania Twain In My opinion!
This a very nice CD of her music and probably my favorite. Good guitar playing. Some good foot tappen stuff here. I will get other CD's of her!

5 out of 5 stars Everybody loves this album.......2007-04-11

I played this album in many familiar and friends meetings, and everybody has only good comments about the quality of the musica and the sound...I really recommend this tape.

5 out of 5 stars one of a kind voice.......2006-01-12

Upon listening to her music and voice... i fell in love.
Nice guitar rhythms and melodic too. Just looking on her cd cover, you can tell that she's oozing with sex appeal and she can play.

5 out of 5 stars Totally a fan now.......2005-10-09

I saw Ms. Cooling at the WAVE Fest at the Greek Theatre in LA a week ago (October, 2005). What an amazing guitarist she is, and oh my what a band. So I bought this CD here a few days later and holy cow, am I forever into this girl and her "gotta play" skills. I fully intend to dive deep into her previous stuff as well. This, folks, is one talented musician. Treat yourself, get this CD and get into Joyce Cooling. And, PS ... her keyboard player, producer, Jay Wagner may be the most amazing player I have seen live.

5 out of 5 stars YUM!.......2005-08-26

Yes indeed, what a GREAT CD. I too heard Ms. Cooling on the radio and gave this CD a buy, and MAN was it the BEST! She really is one of the most amazing guitar players ANYWHERE. I was also VERY moved by the vocal tracks. I think that one reviewer who had a problem with there even being vocal tracks just DOESN'T GET IT! Plus, when he said "those of you into female vocalists might like it" ... yikes! That said enough. I found the vocals unique and cool -- just like Joyce!! Oh well. HIGHLY SUGGEST this CD and this artist!!

In baroque opera, the spotlight was usually reserved for the bravura arias, designed to show off the singers' brilliant coloratura and skill in improvising ornamentation. The ensembles, on the other hand, were left to languish in the shadows. This record aims to right that wrong in a program of 17 duets drawn from 13 mostly unfamiliar Handel operas. In an attempt to create some cohesion, these primarily short selections are arranged under the heading "Love and Jealousy," with love predominating and usually prevailing. If the title sounds a bit gimmicky, never mind: the music's the thing and it is wonderful. Expressed with Handel's inimitable dramatic intensity and deeply felt inwardness, it encompasses every amorous emotion from tenderness, ardent protestation and rapturous joy to fear of loss, anguish and mournful farewell, using an infinite variety of form, texture and character. Some duets begin with a recitative; the voices separate and unite, conversing, interweaving, joining in imitation or harmony. The orchestra, a period-instrument group of soloists, provides introductions, interludes and postludes which set mood and atmosphere and contribute greatly to contrast and diversity. The performances are splendid. The two singers prove that the duet is as fertile a vehicle for virtuosic display as any aria, and they find plenty of opportunities for ornamentation in the da capos. Their voices can blend and merge as well as remain distinctly individual in timbre and color, and they succeed in creating, or at least suggesting, situations and personalities even in the shortest selections. The playing is impeccable: rhythmically crisp and pungent, texturally transparent, and very expressive. The only cavil is that the selections often follow each other without a pause, making it difficult to be sure where one ends and the next begins. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Singing.......2007-01-04

I must admit that, before becoming a dedicated Joyce DiDonato fan, I probably wouldn't have purchased a CD of Handel duets, or any Baroque duets for that matter. Like other reviewers have observed, the duets are performed out of dramatic context. I also prefer the full opera, particularly when it comes to Handel.

In the case of this CD, who cares? This is literally some of the loveliest Baroque ensemble singing I have ever heard. The pairing of Joyce DiDonato with Patrizia Ciofi was a stroke of brilliance. Their voices match perfectly. Their intonation is spot on, all the time. Their ornamentations, particularly the da capo ornamentations, are intelligently selected and brilliantly executed. The balance is just right between the singers and the chamber musicians.

I have a big thanks to give to Virgin Veritas and these two wonderful artists for this CD. It will get lots of play in my home.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars From still waters to fireworks in baroque singing - Duets sung exquisitely.......2005-11-28

Handel was a master of his medium - his music paints with elegance and soul-stirring emotion upon the canvas of the human heart. His duets often exhibit particular indebtedness to Steffani (truly a genius of duet writing), and they are gorgeous duets indeed!

I note that some other reviewers quibble with a) duets only on this recording; and b) a sense of disjointedness.

Addressing both of those issues, let's admit that any recital disc is going to give some disjointedness in the absolute and literal sense. To take a portion of an opera out of its setting and perform it separately is a sort of amputation, be it an album of arias OR an album of duets. Should singers then avoid putting out solo recordings of Handel arias? I find no reason to come to THAT conclusion - and for the same reason, I have no quarrel at all with the recording of an album of Handel duets.

Of course, to enjoy Handel to the fullest degree, do get full recordings as well... but even in Handel's time, singers would pull specific bits of their roles out of context, perform them separately... so it's a time-honoured practice! Let us simply enjoy the high standard of the music without worrying about context in any recording of arias, duets, trios, or operatic scenes.

Handel's duets vary so much in their shape, melodies, harmonies, rhythms - there's plenty of variety. It comes down to a question of the singers involved having suitable voices, singing appropriately for the style, the playing of the orchestra, and the particular variety of duets chosen.

On all points, this album scores highly! Both Ms Ciofi and Ms Di Donato have beautiful voices, clearly trained in baroque singing, and they have equally clearly put in a lot of work to achieve a lovely blend and similar approach within these duets. What a joy to hear gifted singers perform these duets with such intelligence, emotional involvement and lovely, lovely tone!

This recording is a favourite of mine - not just because I perform many of the duets on this CD with another soprano, but because I am genuinely delighted to hear appropriately performed Handel singing in a duet album. I've found fault with some other duet albums because I consider them under-rehearsed, insufficiently blended, and inappropriately embellished - but this album shows none of those faults, and I am very happy to recommend it highly and without reservation. Beautiful singing, beautiful works - you can scarcely wish for more!

4 out of 5 stars Supreme Handel Duets Lack Dramatic Context But Still Lovely.......2005-01-08

I was fortunate to see and hear Renée Fleming and the astounding David Daniels sing "Io t'abbraccio" together in the magnificent Stephen Wadsworth production of Handel's "Rodelinda" at the Metropolitan Opera last week. There is nothing here that can match the ethereal quality and overwhelming melancholy of that duet performance, but sometimes this recording comes pretty close under the masterful baton of Alan Curtis. Soprano Patrizia Ciofi and mezzo-soprano Joyce Di Donato blend quite well together with Ciofi's often fiery coloratura floating easily over the verses and Di Donato's contrasting darker, fuller tone.

It's a nice idea to make a disc of just Handel duets but also a bit risky since they usually represent the major dramatic highpoints of his operas, mostly coming at the end of an act or of the entire opera. Given that fact, one would think there would be plenty of exhausting dramatic fireworks by providing one duet after another. In fact, the higher profile duets, such as the aforementioned "Io t'abbraccio" and the equally famous "Scherzano sul tup volto" from "Rinaldo", feel a bit lackluster probably because their gorgeous music crowns the end of scenes full of tension and drama. The joy in hearing two characters sing together, especially after hearing each of them express their individual sentiments, acts as a catharsis. But here the duets become lovely moments partially robbed of their dramatic impact because the organic synthesis of character and music is lost. Certainly it's not easy to deliver a recital containing only music that Handel devised for key dramatic moments. Yet, it more often does work here perhaps because there are a treasure trove of little-known gems such as "Caro, tu m'accendi" from "Faramondo", "Se mai turbo il tuo riposo" from "Poro" and "Alma mia, dolce ristoro" from "Admeto". The performances really become more like chamber music pieces, almost understated and always tasteful. Toward that end, the singing is expressive and stylish as Ciofi and Di Donato play lovers who quarrel and console in these duets. Together they bring this recording to a consistently high level regardless of the dramatic shortcomings, and their emotional availability makes their unified voices all the more resonant as they get lost in each other.

5 out of 5 stars A feast .......2004-09-28

The programme maybe disjointed, but it doesn't matter, because the singing is some of the most glorious I have EVER heard. A shining feast of articulation, phrasings and harmonies, heavenly executed by Ms Ciofi and Ms Di Donato.

Just buy it for an unparalleled vocal chord experience; marvel at the singing. Any other considerations are entirely oblivious.

5 out of 5 stars A sumptuous feast of Handel.......2004-08-04

Alan Curtis has here chosen to bring to life some of the more memorable duets of Handel's many operas. Quite apart from chewing over some of the more well-known operas he has chosen some duets from Silla, Sosarme (Per le porte del tormento), Faramondo, Atalanta, Poro and Muzio Scevola, few of which have had decent recordings in the last number of years.

His band is small, one player per part, withe the resultant effect rather to make the duets seems like chamber music. There is a danger in that with duets such as Io t'abbraccio (end of Act 2 Rodelinda) taken out of context that the dramatic moment of the music would be lost. However, by arranging the duets in a sequence (as Curtis writes in the notes) from love's joy through self-doubt and jealousy, back to undying love, the duets out of context sound superb.

Both singers, Patrizia Ciofi (Soprano) and Joyce di Donato (Mezzo) sound thoroughly at home in the idiom of baroque opera, and in fact their cadenzas and ornamentation are delightfully understated, rather than the sort of shrieking 'I can go higher still' of some more lauded performers. I look forward to Curtis' forthcoming recordings of Lotario, Rodelinda and Radamisto, if these performers are to be retained.

In short this is a delightful enterprise showing the genious of Handel in dealing with the most basic of human emotions - love and jealousy. Well done Alan Curtis!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest grooves from the 1980s.......2007-02-28

If this album contained only one song, "Come Into My Life", it would still be a classic. In fact, this song is so good, it really puts the rest of the album into the shade. "All and all" is a close second, however. Curtis Mantronik produced "Come Into My Life", "Lifetime Love", "A Change In You" and co-produced and mixed "All And All".

The song, "Come Into My Life" features a very sweet high A flat (the A one ledge line above the treble stave) near the start of song. Joyce Sims sustains it over several bars and sings it without force or drama. We could classify Ms Sims as a soprano.

There is a certain sense of Hip Hop in the drum patterns on this album. Of course, many will know that at the same time this album was released, Mantronik was involved in Mantronix, one of the most musically progressive and interesting Hip Hop outfits in the 1980s.

I can listen to "Come Into My Life" over and over and I think I will always love the title song. It is as great as the greatest slow jams of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, my other favourite producers of this period.

The album was released twenty years ago on the very interesting Sleeping Bag label in 1987.

"All & All' was the Jam!!!! Joyce came out with a unique voice and sounded like no other! and then she released 'Come Into My Life' one of my favorite songs! This was a great debut record from Joyce! It has that great 80's dance style..this cd also contains Joyce's strong cover of 'Love Makes A Woman'(Barbara Acklin, Phoebe Snow) & the big hit 'Lifetime Love', Joyce released a single back 1995 but we haven't got a full length CD since 1989's 'All About Love', Joyce make another CD!

4 out of 5 stars We Miss Ya Joyce!.......2006-01-13

As a club DJ in the '80's "All and ALL" was popular but "Lifetime Love" was the bomb! Joyce has a silky voice that was not diminished by sometimes overly aggressive production.

This album is worth owning just for the above 2 trax.

One of the most refreshing guitar voices to come out of smooth jazz in the last five years, Joyce Cooling returns with her third album, her first for a major label. Cooling's instantly recognizable scat-guitar style is used prominently throughout: as a melody line on Brazilian-flavored "Tamba"; accompanying the bridge and second verse on the heavy groove "Jelly on My Jacket"; and to enhance her solo on the title track. Al Jarreau joins in on the wordless vocal fun with Cooling on the aptly titled "Mm-mm Good." The Grammy-winning singer is the only ringer on Third Wish. The guitarist and her partner, keyboardist-producer Jay Wagner, wisely continue to record with their working band, which adds to the cohesiveness of this upbeat 10-track effort. Guest trumpeter Bill Ovitz does give the lowdown and funky "East Side" a kind of Rick Braun-Jeff Golub collaborative vibe; otherwise, Third Wish shows the kind of originality and growth for Cooling and her band that is pretty rare in the derivative smooth-jazz world. --Mark Ruffin

This girl does some really nice things with the guitar. A few nice vocals here and there. If you like smooth jazz you'll surely enjoy this artist!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazz Guitar at it's best.......2004-04-13

This CD is the whole package: great guitar licks, enchanting keyboards, strong percussion, and nice vocals. Third Wish and Jelly On My Jacket are two of my favorites, and Joyce's vocals on It'll Come Back to Me, are oh so smooth. It's hard to believe that she hasn't become more of a household name. I've enjoyed this CD so much, I purchased Playing it Cool, as well. Unlke some other jazz guitarists, Joyce's songs wear very well. Definitely worth a listen.

I have been fortunate enough to have participated in 5 Grammy Nominated productions as well as countless other albums by some great artists. They include: Matt Monro, Santana, Jose Feliciano, Shirley Bassey, Renato, and Los Diablos to name a few. I think this is one of the best instrumental new age productions I have heard in a long time. Joyce Coolie is da bomb! I bought the album on Amazon.com. I love the song Daddy O. and You will too! Please note that I have absolutely nothing to do with this production, and do not know Ms. Coolie.

Buy the album, and keep supporting the creative forces behind everything you listen to on the internet!

5 out of 5 stars Joyce - Listen.......2002-01-27

I have been a Joyce Cooling fan from the start. Her live performances are the best, as she is so incredibly beautiful...OK, I digress. This album is roughly on par with her first two. "Third Wish" and "Daddy-O" stick to her 'formula' smooth jazz blockbusters and make the album 'buyable' for those two alone. I found the Al Jarreau piece a little disappointing, although I own several Jarreau albums and appreciate his work immensely. However, the beautiful "It'll Come back to me" (track 7) is hauntingly poetic. What a thoughtful and timely piece (I thought of it in terms of 9-11 and my personal 'lost opportunities') Joyce has a inspiring, beautiful voice. I think she could put 2-3 vocal tracks on an album and combine that with her creative standard for the next album. 'South of Market' is still her best timed hit, released during the peak of the SF dot com boom, but Joyce has disciplined talent, and she will continue to produce top quality jazz. The next effort is will be very, very important; again timing will be critical. In the meantime, Third Wish has been in my car CD cassette since its release.

2 out of 5 stars Come On!.......2002-01-24

I have both of Joyce's first two albums and found Third Wish to be a dissapointment. There is no growth here at all. Her songs like South Of Market and Callie are rich and fresh. She needs to try something different. She might have been better served with her previous company. These big companies seem to always get in the way of a new artist
