Product Description

The all native West African pop group WASSALOU is the one and only band of its kind in all of Florida. The band's unique talent is also an important addition to the North American cultural landscape and collectively their level of virtuosity and musicianship is unmatched in this country. This 1999 release by the Disney-based group is a 9 song CD featuring remakes of some of Africa’s best known stars like Papa Wemba and Salif Keta. The primary vocals are sung mostly by Djene Doumbouya (Guinea) and Abdoulaye Diabate, who is originally from Mali. The arranger, keyboardist and bandleader, Adzhouni Adou, hails from the Ivory Coast and skillfully puts his own spin on these popular songs, the result of which is an album of very danceable tunes. The musical genre or style of this release is “Afro-Pop” and it combines ancient and modern instruments into a cultural celebration.

Rare 60's recordings from Africando's lead singer.......2005-07-28

Imagine: this is Cotonou (Benin) or Dakar (Senegal) in the 60s. You're enjoying a margarita at the bar of the Grand Hotel when the local band starts playing... And lo and behold, they're very good!
Gnonnas Pedro and his Dadjes play cool and groovy covers of classic songs from the 60s, together with some original compositions including highlife and West African rythms. Sweet Comoine Highlife is the highlight of the CD. Pedro sings in English, French, Spanish and African dialect. He has a distinctive voice that takes him across genres, from traditional African tunes to pop to salsa.
For the cost of a CD you get a trip to Africa and get to travel back in time! A bargain.

Jambo, Jambo.......2007-01-24

This is an album of well known, commercialized Kenyan songs. The song entitled "Jambo Jambo" on this album and mentioned in the review above is NOT a Kenyan birthday song. It is basically a tourism song - it welcomes visitors to the country of Kenya. The first few lines translate roughly to: "Hello, Hello Sir. How are you? Very well. Visitors, you are welcome to our Kenya. There are no worries." Just thought I'd share this information for those people who are interested in knowing the correct meanings/contexts of the songs.

The Best of African Songs by Safari Sound Band--GREAT album.......2002-01-09

This music is so fun and enlightening and will make you feel like you are on Safari just listening to it. The lyrics are mostly in Swahili and are good ways to learn a few words of this lovely language. I especially liked "Jambo Jambo" which is sung on birthday celebrations in Kenya but there wasn't one of the 14 tracks which we didn't like. Kids love it too!
