Suzanne Vega emerged in the mid-'80s, and while her intimate voice and acoustic guitar brought to mind Joni Mitchell, her urbane lyrics suggested a sensibility that was as much reportorial as confessional. Vega's second album, which replaced the delicate acoustic textures of her self-titled debut with more dramatic arrangements, includes Vega's career song, "Luka," surely one of the biggest hits ever written about child abuse. But it was the energetic folk-rock production of "Luka," thick with ringing guitars and pushed by perky drums, that let the listener luxuriate in a song that suggested the darkness that can lurk behind a neighbor's door. The title tune confronts personal loneliness with a similarly powerful performance, while "Ironbound/Fancy Poultry" makes a downtown landscape sound downright homey. Well-turned tunes like "Calypso" and "Gypsy" recall the softer textures of her debut. Ironically, Vega's next big hit would come when the English production duo DNA made a dance hit out of "Tom's Diner," a nursery-rhyme tribute to a coffee shop that opens the album. --John Milward

5 out of 5 stars This CD blew me away..........2007-07-20

When I first heard Tom's Diner it was like I was sitting there next to the artist watching these event unfold as you sat in the window booth. But I was blown away when she sang the whole thing in acapella. Luka I already like from hearing it on the radio. Ironbound and Gypsy stirred up images in my mind of hardship and fleating love. Night Vision took me a few years to figure out...yeah I am a little slow sometimes. But when I got it it was another 'wow' moment. That is what I like about Suzanne Vega's music. It makes me get lost in the lyrics images. Tom's Diner is a prime example. But if you are a person that likes lyrics that don't make you think or imagine then you shouldn't buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A firm standing album.......2007-06-05

Despite the hype surrounding Tom's Diner and Luka, the rest of the songs on this album firmly stand on their own. The accoustics and artful poetry via Suzanne Vega stand out in her second album with thought provoking compassion. Don't merely fall into the envelope of Tom's Diner and Luka (which, while great songs, are not her only stars). After 20 years this album still holds strong and brings you to the nostalgia of a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars Mother of the MP3.......2007-04-10

According to sources on the web, the first song in this collection, Tom's Diner, was used as the model piece in the development of the mp3 compression algorithm. Thus, Suzanne Vega has earned the title, "Mother of the MP3." Somehow appropriately, since it is rendered without music in the first cut, music for Tom's Diner is played without words in the last. It is worth the price of the album if only for Tom's Diner. The rest is pretty good too.

5 out of 5 stars This album got me through high school.......2006-12-30

Every song tells a story. I bought a tape of this CD when it came out and it had nothing to do with Luka. The best song in my opinion is Night Vision. Wow...

Suzanne Vega is a writer. In fact check out the book Solitude Standing and you'll see that her life is her lyrics.

They used to list her as folk music and I do believe it's because they can't "slot" her anywhere. Her music had too much soft guitar to be rock/pop so she got the folk label but now that there are more categories she could be considered alternative. That's what they call you when they don't know what you are.

If you like to be entertained by storytelling and good, well-written songs then you won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Whenever I hear anything from this album I'm taken back to those strong teenage emotions felt on rain soaked afternoons that I walked home listening to this in my walkman.

I have never seen another album on Amazon receive so many fives. The only one who didn't give five was actually rating a so-called live performance.

Suzanne is by far one of the most prolific female (or any other kind) singer songwriter in the world.I was skeptical when I first heard Luka on the radio on Suzannes debut. While that was and still a very good glimpse into her abilities...it wasn't her best. Fortunately for me I heard Solitude Standing on a progressive radio station and the "honeymoon" has never ended. In concert she is totally captivating with her non pretentious and humble musical masterpieces. Her use of linguistics, melody, and diverse subject matter never fail to transport one to a lush garden of imagination. Accents of meticulous placements of bass, and percussive spices that only one woman in the world can cook up. Truly one of a kind and the classiest acts ever to grace a stage.

Just what was wrong with being the bass player for one of the greatest classic rock bands? Was it Cher? Dude, snap out of it! What would your mother say?

1 out of 5 stars sappy love songs.......2006-09-14

The compositions, Rhythms and singin-style of Peter Cetera sound always the same. He is a typical sappy love song - singer who prefers the love ballads and cheesy love adventures.
it might have been a bit tedious and boring.

The problem is everywhere: If you are a Hardrock fan like bands Uriah Heep, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Rory Gallagher, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, your ears can't be familar with all these silly love songs. My ears cannot work like that.

there are two alternatives:
- if you are a hardrock fan. You like a mythological lyrics, you won't like Peter Cetera or Chicago. Keep your fingers away from this !!!
- if you are a sappy love song fan then please buy this cd !!!

3 out of 5 stars Glory of Cetera........2006-06-19

I recently went through another Chicago phase, and picked-up their "Very Best Of". As I listened to that I realized how much more I liked the Cetera-sung songs, and that two of my favorites were missing. Those were of course "Glory Of Love" and "Next Time I Fall", and not Chicago songs. Hence I got this and got my full Peter Cetera fix. Those are the best songs I'd say, but others do hold up also. I really like "Queen Of The Masquerade Ball", the title track, and the great ballad "Only Love Knows Why". Overall this might not be as great as his former band, but it is good enough for me to own on vinyl, cassette, and CD.

5 out of 5 stars quality music.......2006-02-23

My dad has all of the Peter Cetera cd's and I grew up listening to them in the car- now that I am 18 I really love this music. It has a certain nostalgia to it and reminds me of the good ole 80's and 90's (which is a nice change from current music). Every song is unique, with a different pace and feel. Peter sings great ballads but also has great energetic songs. My favorites include Daddy's girl, They don't make em like they used to, queen of the masquerade ball, and Next time I fall. Honestly I cannot think of a musician to compare Peter Cetera to because his unique voice and style put him in a category of his own.

3 out of 5 stars There are only two songs worth listening to over and over again.......2006-01-05

What's the 4-1-1?
Peter Cetera joined the Chicago Transit Authority (later named Chicago) in 1967 as a bass player. He soon became one of the major songwriters and vocalist for the group, penning a majority of their hits throughout the seventies and eighties. Chicago hit a low point in the late seventies which prompted Cetera to consider a solo career. It was the video music-era that kept Chicago together (for a few more albums at least). Cetera was getting more and more exposure due to the music videos and was becoming a break out star. He released his first solo album in 1981, but stayed with Chicago in 1985. It was the following year that he released the highly successful Solitude/Solitaire.

"Big Mistake" pretty much sums up the pop-rock musical landscape at the time with its bouncing keyboard tones, melodic vocals, and powerful choruses. The guitars have that liquid sound that everyone was looking for to compliment their synths. "They Don't Make `Em Like They Used To" compares a special woman to a one-of-a-kind automobile. I can see Cetera's point here, but the sentiment seems a little corny. The addition of synthesized brass adds great texture to the track. It's more likely than not that you bought this album for "Glory of Love." Who can deny this touching and emotional ballad that was the theme for The Karate Kid: Part II? It fit the movie perfectly, and probably every wedding and prom that occurred that year.

"Daddy's Girl" has one of those keyboard and bass build-ups that lead into a driving chorus section. It was another ballad that helped catapult this album up the charts; "The Next Time I Fall." Amy Grant's (virtually unknown in the pop circle at the time) soft tones complimented Cetera's high-pitched melodic delivery perfectly. On "Solitude/Solitaire," Peter struggles with thoughts of running away from the world where he could never be found. The track is commanded by a strong synthesizer presence.

Cetera went on to release a handful of solo albums, but eventually fell off the face of the Earth. Cetera's vocal talent and musicianship certainly could not be to blame for his trip into obscurity. You can't deny the guy's good. I think it boiled down to two things; his sound had gotten old and dated, and people would rather see him back with Chicago. Cetera wouldn't even talk about the group or allow for his songs to be played during VH1's Behind the Music special on Chicago a few years ago, so I don't think there's a chance of a reunion there.

The Verdict
I've always enjoyed Peter's work in Chicago, but Solitude/Solitaire is a far cry from that (except for the ballads). It's a different sound, a different feel, and not as polished as his later work with Chicago. I'm sure that's what he was going for, but I don't think it was a good choice. Although the album's nine songs are decent, they're only two songs worth listening to over and over again; "Glory of Love" and "The Next Time I Fall."

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

5 out of 5 stars Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20

After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-10

Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal LIszt in Superb Sound.......2006-09-29

Piano playing of extraordinary romantic depth and breadth. Bolet is inside Liszt's mind, as Liszt's romantic self unfolds on the keyboard. It is as if Bolet is the master himself. Superlative recordings to boot!

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of Liszt treasures.......2004-01-12

The booklet of this set has an interesting explanation of why Jorge Bolet stayed out of the spotlights for so long before taking up his -glorious- career. It was his devotion to Liszt. By then, in the 1950s, Liszt was still regarded as a B-composer (There are still people who tend to think so: I read someone who called Liszt `the father of all bar pianists'. Now, if you know a worse offence...). Only after Liszt's reputation had increased, Bolet could enter his `Indian summer', which lasted from about 1975 until his passing away in 1990. During this period, he was finally able to perform his favourite music as much as possible. This fine 9-disc set may indeed be Bolet's most important testament. Additionally, it's one of the most important Liszt collections on the market. But beware: there's much more than just Bolet, considering Liszt's piano works. I can't say this is the perfect set or near it. Still five stars, for some astonishing piano playing that we don't come across very often nowadays.

Bolet won a Gramophone Award for his 1st book of Années de Pelerinage, which is not strange when listening to the recordings. This is a portrait of a man who's entirely on his own, looking for his soul while wandering trough the beautiful Switzerland - I can't say it better than B. Johnson already did. It's Romantic nonsense, of course, but in Liszt's days it was a common idea, and it can still sweep me away. Bolet's superior tonal colouring - beautiful, but not too far-driven, for the risk it would almost be too intimidating - and his peaceful nature lift this music to the greatest heights. My only complaint would be the `Orage' piece: Bolet's technique can't quite handle it, and its aggressive nature is much less overwhelming as a result. Nevertheless, the rest of the pieces show him at his very best. So does the second year of the Années (that is oddly placed in the set before the first year by Decca). The Dante Sonata, one of Liszt's greatest pieces, fares very well under Bolet's hands.

Equally excellent were the Schubert Song Transcriptions. The transcriptions aren't very different from the original songs, but they are definitely interesting. Especially when someone like Bolet takes them under his hands! All songs are terrifically played, with real standouts like `Auf dem Wasser zu singen', `Der Mueller und der Bach' and `Erlkoenig'. Bolet's romantic touch (he may have been the last of his kind) lets the music unendingly flow. Brilliant!

These comments also apply to Liszt's Consolations, which are placed on another disc. Liszt shows here how much he's in debt to Schubert, and wrote music of a disarmingly lyrical nature. Bolet gives almost naively innocent readings of these pieces. Talking about singing music, why not include the Liebesträume, `Venezia e Napoli' and many, many other pieces as well. Although some people still regard Liszt as a bombastic composer, he was in fact much more active on the spiritual and lyrical area. It is largely this nature of Liszt that is put into the spotlights by Bolet. He is really terrific whenever music ought to sound peaceful and meditative.

But Liszt was also a stunning virtuoso. People may eschew him for that, but that's often without any good ground. The B minor Sonata and the Transcendental Etudes, to give some names, are not only pianistically but also musically amazing works. It takes to be both a good technician and a musician to play them well, and this is where Bolet occasionally fails. He was over 65 when he made these recordings, and I can't help but say that his technique was not anymore what it used to be. In many pieces you can hear him struggle.

In what may be the most difficult music Liszt wrote, the Transcendental Etudes, Bolet takes tempi that are almost too easy (e.g. no.10 should be `Allegro molto agitato' but Bolet plays it very moderately), perhaps because his technique was by then too limited to give the pieces a really impressive treatment. Even then, I do feel a ertain nobility in Bolet's slow approach that gives every study a dignified stature (and that's something you won't find with Kissin or Cziffra!). The sonata is similarly noble and yet tremendously powerful in its scope, even though Bolet may lack some technial control at isolated spots.

Anoter treacherous piece is the `Reminiscences de Don Juan', which is a transcription of no less an opera than -of course- Don Giovanni! Bolet plays this 20-minute piece with a lot of humour and swing: it's a great way to clean up your mind! Also recommendable are the Etudes de Concert (e.g. Waldesrauschen), whose light spirit is very well captured.

A treasure trove set overall, I can recommend it without any limitations. There's no other composer that suited Bolet as well as Liszt, and the vice versa may be true as well. But the pianist also has his weaker points, particularly regarding his technique, that wasn't what it used to be. Oh, and the piano sound is not always equally convincing: the instrument sounds a little shrill at times. But there's an amazing amount of colour in the instrument, and it allows Bolet to reachfor the deepest, darkest sonorities you've heard. This collection is therefore not just THE best Liszt: there are many more pianists who made supreme recordings of him (e.g. Arrau, Brendel, Richter) and I definitely recommend searching them out as well. After you've heard this!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Liszt interpretations........2003-12-03

I was very impressed with Bolet's playing. His rendition of La Campanella is the best I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Liszt for the ages........2001-12-05

Both for those that would like to find out for the first time what Liszt is all about, and for those few that are very familiar with the Paganini of the 88: LOOK NO FURTHER!

It doesn't get any better than this.

After I heard throughout the seventies about this "unknown" great of the romantic repertoire, I was fortunate enough to see him for the first time about a month after he recorded the first issue of this now legendary Liszt series. While his technique may not have exactly been what it used to be before (e.g. Orage in Suisse of Les Annees), all the performances benefit from the wisdom of many, many years. While all the performances are of a uniform Olympic level, two issue stand out in my mind.

First, there is the cd of Schubert Liszt transcriptions. Bolet really sets the standards for "singing" on the piano. His version of "Der Muller und der Bach" has to be believed to be heard.

Most importantly though, there is "Suisse" the first year of Liszt's years of pilgrimage. I own this disc from the day it appeared on the shelves and still listen to it every month. Surely, there are more technically brilliant versions. For the true "Liszt Nuts", I would certainly advise Leslie Howard's version of "L'Album d'un voyageur", that contains the first version of many of the "Suisse" pieces, and some additional pieces that Frenz (for reasons that escape me completely) excluded from the later Suisse. Yet, nobody, not even Brendel or Berman, have come close to Bolet on delivering on the central theme of Suisse, man finding himself back in an exploration of nature.

While they stem from the earlier days of digital recording the recordings are still more than respectable and benefit greatly from Bolet's attention for color, aided by his favorite Bechstein.

Many of these recordings have not been available for a while. Get them before they're history!

Playwright Tony Kushner adapted his sprawling meditation on the AIDS epidemic of the 80's into an equally epic, Mike Nichols-directed HBO miniseries. But while Thomas Newman's score spans that dramatic landscape with rich stylistic diversity, the young champion of the daunting Newman family musical tradition (his father was Fox legend Alfred; his brother fellow film scorer David; his cousin songwriter/composer Randy) never lets musical bombast get in the way of compelling emotional introspection. Anchored by a delicate wind and string-driven main theme that's as mature as it is bittersweet, Newman proceeds to explore some of the same adventurous, rhythmically restless soundscapes that characterized his work on Erin Brockovich and American Beauty. But that typically moody experimentalism is leavened elsewhere by moments of neo-baroque choral exultation, smokey 30's jazz (courtesy of George Lewis and his Ragtime Band and Duke Ellington) and even flashes of gospel and orchestral post-modernism, all of it served up with a masterful sense of irony-free restraint that's become one of the composer's most refreshing hallmarks. It's easily one of Newman's -- and 2003's -- most accomplished and satisfying film scores. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Some of his best work.......2007-06-12

Most of us know Thomas Newman for his work on his more famous films like American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption, Scent of a Woman and Meet Joe Black, but this soundtrack to the HBO film is right up there with his best pieces of work. The whole album goes through various feelings, shades and emotions, the best tracks for me being Mauve Antarctica and Tropopause. If you're a Thomas Newman fan then you need this in your collection.

There are not enough stars on the selection for me to say how good this CD is! It is so beautiful and like classical music. I listen to it all the time!

5 out of 5 stars The Celestial Xpression of Thomas Newman.......2005-08-31

...well, to only write a review is not enough to describe the impressive sound in this record. it is necessary to listen to it. Thomas do not scrimp in efforts to assemble this wonderful musical work. in fact, each one of the melodys, agreed, and instruments (mainly those of wind and strings) even are perfectly connected and performed in litle some more of 70 minutes of music. Transitions from the quietness of a melody to the loudest human chorus, may be hear is this soundtrack (tipically from the original Serie, that I have too in DVD). But everything is not perfect. Must be had included the Henry Mancini song: "Moon River" contained in one of the most sentimental scenes in the film/serie (that i think at least). In a plus, if you are an lover of this kind of productions, it does not have to lack in its collection the "Angels in America Soundtrack". Buy and enjoy it..!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing work.......2004-11-28

After working in film scoring for the past decade, Thomas Newman has finally achieved his masterwork with the soundtrack to "Angels in America." It is a culmination of the different techniques and themes he has worked on in the past, along with a completely new orchestral sound that perfectly underlies the depth and scope of the film. It is a very rare score in that it conveys all the happiness, pain, pessimism and hope that Kushner's work is all about, simply through the nuanced way Newman has written and arranged it. It is an incredibly entertaining score that stands well on its own. A must for any fans of Newman or the film.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES AT BUDGET PRICE.......2000-07-19

Until now, Waldteufel's music has been largely understated, probably because it is not considered serious music and also that there's no one to keep alive the tradition of performing his music (which is probably also due to the first reason) as the Vienna Philharmonic have been doing with Johann Strauss' waltzes. This recording by the Slovak State Philharmonic (Kosice), with Alfred Walter conducting, brings together some of the most popular of Waldteufel's compositions, the most famous being the "Skater's Waltz"; the tempo, on the whole, is well paced, however I prefer Anton Paulik's rendition with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra on the Vanguard label. Two other well know pieces are on here, Estudiantina and the Espana Waltz (after Chabrier). For a relatively, young orchestra, the Kosice play extremely well. And Alfred Walter has the appropriate skills to bring out the right rhythm. What's more exciting (a little mysterious, even) about this recording is that every track on this CD is directly transferred from Marco Polo's Waldteufel series. But this CD costs half as much as the ones under the name, Marco Polo; I know that Naxos and Marco Polo are affiliated, but that still doesn't help me explain the price difference. Hence, this should be an extra incentive for you to go and get this CD!

Album Description

BlueBob is a music idea based on the pounding machinery of the smokestack industry & the raw amplified birth of rock & roll. The music is inspired by machines, fire, smoke & electricity. By submerging itself in the ever reverberating golden past, Blue Bob is trying to poke forward. Three videos are planned from the album. Solitude. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not weird, not dark, not ridicuous... Not Remarkable.......2007-05-18

I was quite disappointed with this album. I'm a pretty big fan of David Lynch's films, especially his stranger, darker ones. And I'm fascinated by the soundscapes that he creates. So when I read that this album is "based on the pounding machinery of the smokestack industry...inspired by machines, fire, smoke & electricity..." I thought that this could be my album of the year. Others here call it "dark, weird," and so on, so I took a chance. But this album is hardly remarkable; it's just 2- or 3-chord guitar music with some heavily reverb'd lyrics groaned over it. If it was played in the background during 'The Bronze' scenes in "Buffy," I'd never even think to question it. There are dozens of bands that sound like this, and I dismiss them, so why cut Lynch any slack? I think I was hoping for Eraserhead and instead got something far more mainstream and boring than I'd ever imagined. If you, like me, thought that this might be industrial, or perhaps even as off-beat as, say, 'The Residents,' you're in for a disappointment. This isn't nearly weird enough to be interesting or memorable. Sorry, Mr. L.

5 out of 5 stars The sexy side of the Steal Mill..........2006-03-16

If like me you are a fan of "Twin Peaks" and films of David Lynch, then I'm sure you have noticed a recurring theme in some of his work, that of "the mill". This album is like an ode to the rhythmic, industrial sounds one would find in a place like the Packard Saw Mill, or if you were out with Frank one night and drove past the mill in Lumberton, layered over with good old fashioned Americana sex appeal wrapped inside of one of Lynch's dream sequences...

If you have seen Mulholland Dr. then you have heard some of this music before (mostly towards the end). Also if you have seen Fire Walk With Me then you have heard this type of sound (the scenes in Canada with Jeac).

Over all a very fun trip into Lynch's world, and a great album to have sex to!

4 out of 5 stars Uh, not quite..........2005-01-19

'Good Wood' is an album recorded by a different David Lynch altogether, not the film director who is also part of Blue Bob. That was almost as bad as the time I was reading a review of The Elephant Man on Amazon and someone thought that the actor John Hurt and bluesman Mississippi John Hurt were one in the same. Some people are just so stupid.

4 out of 5 stars David Lynch seduces again.......2004-12-22

That Mr. Lynch is capable of making some of the most striking and original films of recent past may be acknolledged. That he is also a celebrated photographer and art painter is known by many.
But less known is the fact that that the man likes to play a little tune on the guitar once in a while: acoustic (which can be heard on the 'Good wood' album) and electric: which resulted in this 'Blue Bob'.

David likes to toy with both of them. He writes the lyrics (as he did for the two first Julee Cruise albums), plays the percussion and does the singing. With all this, he is accompanied by one John Neff, so in a way we could talk about a two-man-formation.
But David really has his moments here. The sound is all too familiar for his die hard fans who know David's film feature debut 'Eraserhead'. Soundscapes filled with machinery, bouncing steele, hydraulic pumps, hissing steam.... The album has become a nihilistic, brooding and almost industrial sounding record with which David just seems to have fun with. Tongue-in-cheek-fun that is. You never quite know when he is taking himself seriously or just jamming with a good sense of black humor behind it.

The most stand out song must be 'Mountains falling'; never sounded an electric guitar that grimm, lustful, steamy, erotic and haunting like on this song, an 8-minute-plus ode to an unidentifiable 'you' Mr. Lynch sees in a dream.

Lynch uses this song partly in his genious magnum opus 'Mulholland Dr.', as also the song 'Go get some', the latter used as backing music for a steamy lesbian scene with Naomi Watts.
David Lynch has proven to be that flamboyant artist again, untouchable, childlike, and surreal at times, although this one is not so much for the eye as it is for the ear.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Pool Hall Tunes.......2004-11-21

Brian Eno made an album called THE DROP. He described it as (paraphrasing): "Jazz played by a space alien who's never heard jazz, but has had it described to him."

There's nothing "alien" or space-like in the sounds in BLUE BOB. The album is down to earth, raw, and gritty. But it reminds me of early rock/rhythm and blues as you might imagine it, not how it actually sounds.

This is one of my favorite albums. Yep--I checked it out because I'm a Lynch fan. But after a year, BLUE BOB more than stands on its own.

I play the thing relentlessly, especially when I'm in the game room shooting pool and enjoying beverages. It's an excellent album, and it holds up to repeated listenings better than most music. It's unusual stuff, full of the humor and darkness you'd expect, but most tunes are *very* accessible.

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Some mouths should stay closed...and some fingers, bound .......2005-06-22

The reason this band sounds like Shadows Fall is because the lead singer, Phil Labonte, happens to be the former lead singer of Shadows Fall. The reason this band reminds you of Killswitch Engage is because they have the same producer,Adam Dutkiewicz. Now, as for insulting the musical content of All That Remains, you underestimate very heavily the skills of Ollie Herbert as a guitarist, who is on par, in comparison of musical knowledge and skill repertoire, with people like Buckethead and Paul Gilbert. Before you decide to vent your own frustrations with what you ineptly dub nu metal, get your facts straight. Nu metal was the crunch bands who were allowed only to be puppets of corporations, no solos, no real guitar work, just lots of chugging rhythms, dumb, violent lyrics and a saleable image. Of those bands, only Slipknot stepped out of the shadow of their record label, finally, on the Subliminal Verses, which is still very polished and mainstream. And you're right, Killswitch Engage may have existed before All That Remains, but I have a feeling Ollie Herbert has been trying to make a name for himself with his guitar skills for quite some years, and finally found a band to do it with, when All That Remains formed in 1998, with Phil Labonte still singing with Shadows Fall, as well. For reference, I suggest you listen to Ollie's Betcha' Can't Play This from Guitar World (someone help me with the month. '04), and take note of what he says about the riff's construction. He is much more musically grounded than people who go on stage knowing what it sounds like only after they play it. Also, before you make vociferous, snap judgments about bands, only hearing what Amazon offers you through their fish-tanked sound clips, which make almost every metal band indistinguishable from another, I suggest you go out and buy a record other than Killswitch Engage, who you seem to be enamored with, worshipping them as the gods of all things metal. You may want to start with Frank Zappa's "Them or Us," Steve Vai's "Passion and Warfare," or Death's "Human." As for legitimacy, All That Remains is a gem of a find in a minefield of metal that can be zombifying in its similarity. The only thing that justifies their label as a hardcore band is Phil Labonte's singing and reputation.

Speeding on in harmonic minor and diminished fury,

All that remains is one of the best in metal/hardcore scene today. They may not be as big as some other bands but they definitly have the talent and drive to back it up. Ive seen them live about 4 times now and they sound just as good live as they do on their albums. This album is brutally mind blowing from start to finish. If you liked "This Darkened Heart" Then your going to want to pick this one up beacuse its just as great.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2004-10-12

This is a very good album. I almost wish I had heard this before "This Darkened Heart". This album has a more raw feel to it. Less production trying to clean up the sound, which I like. I think both albums are great, but TDH sounds almost like they blended with Killswitch Engage (makes sense, seeing as how TDH was recorded and produced by Killswitch's guitarist, who also produces KE's stuff). This album definately has a more old school metal/grindcore feel to it. Either way I feel ATR is one of the best newer metal bands out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd!.......2003-12-20

Yah, this cd definatly felt like someone hit me in the back of the head with a baseball bat. It definatly comes at you hard and fast, both I like! If your into the heavy scene youll like this. Mike (Drummer) Comes into my work every so often. Only met him once but now that ive heard what they can do, I cant wait to meet him again.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Yoga or massage.......2001-04-01

I have used this CD for months in the Yoga classes that I teach. People always come to me afterwards to ask about the music. They remark how soothing and inducive to relaxation it is. I do recomend it for anyone looking for a smooth and relaxing background music.
