Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

5 out of 5 stars I wore out the album!.......2007-03-16

In the '70s when the album "Live at the Maisonette" came out, it was clearly my favorite at the time, and I wore it out. I've been waiting for years for it to be released onto CD. There's nothing like the energy in a live performace, especially when done by musicians who are at the top of their game, and this album does not disappoint. The arrangements are inspiring, and Mel was at his best. If you enjoyed Mel's work, you MUST own this recording.

    5 out of 5 stars ALMOST DEFINITIVE.......2004-06-08

If one wants the defintive Mel Torme concert album, this is close to it. His "Mel Torme & Friends Recorded Live at Marty's" surpasses this one but it's out of stock. So, buy this gem which is darn close in quality. The 1st album of which I never heard until this release is quite perfect in song selection & performance quality. There are many lesser done gems like Early Autumn, Love Is Just Around The Corner, When The World Was Young, & Mountain Greenery. The last 3 are done by Mel on other concert albums. But, he has that right when the songs aren't done as often. His voice is rich on these 2 albums with less of that velvet fog style of which he hated to be linked. Mel does variety of styles to make this a well rounded package. Since we can't see Torme in concert anymore, this is the best we can do. I must say that LIVE AT MAISONEETTE could have been longer but since it's linked with RED MILL it is well worth buying. I also hope that MEL TORME AND FRIENDS will reissued for other Torme fans & please, Amazon, list it as the title is on the cd cover & label. It's difficult to find with the very abbreviated title, LIVE. Same goes for the label name with your name listing different than the actual cd.

5 out of 5 stars I'm the First? Are you Serious????.......2004-01-20

How could I be the first to review this? (I was the 1183rd to review Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me"!) This is Torme's best, in my opinion. I became a disciple of vocal jazz after hearing "Live at the Maisonette", nearly 30 years ago, and the 18-minute Gershwin medley. But on relisten, Mel's cover of "Route 66" is the highlight. He slips "R-A-G-G-M-O-P-P", "Drum Boogie", "Salt Peanuts" and "When the Saints Go Marchin' In" into the Bobby Troup chestnut, and shows the world that he truly is a jazzman. As much as I loved that album, "Red Hill" is even better. His cover of "When the World Was Young" is stunning and evokes but does not copy Marlene Dietrich; and his covers of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "It's DeLovely" are sensational. Mel Torme in his prime had probably the best set of vocal cords of any jazz singer around; and this album captures "The Velvet Fog" in his prime. Highly, highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-20

The 'Stabat Mater' is a medieval poem describing the anguish of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion written at the end of the 13th century by a Franciscan lay brother named Jacopone da Todi. It did not attract widespread attention from composers until the 18th century when Alessandro Scarlatti, his son Domenico, Vivaldi, Bononcini, Haydn and Pergolesi as well as many others set the poem to music. They were, no doubt, attracted to the emotional and dramatic nature of the poem, and most of the composers were commissioned by various individuals for non-liturgical devotions or concerts.

Alessandro Scarlatti's seems to be the earliest of the group. He scored it for soprano and alto voices(probably sung by a 'castrati' at that time), two violins and continuo. This setting was used frequently until Pergolesi's setting around 1735. Pergolesi modeled his composition after Scarlatti; for one thing both are scored for the same 2 voices and strings. Both divide the poem into a number of duets and solo arias. One difference between the two settings is that Pergolesi's is shorter and rather more concise.
It is not certain that Pergolesi actually wrote the 'Magnificat' on this disc, but it is a quality and richly imaginative work, nonetheless.
Domenico's 'Stabat Mater' is set for 10 voices and organ and its mood is meditative clearly intended for liturgical use.
Bononcini's 'Stabat Mater' was composed during his residence in Vienna. It is unique because of its harmonic and contrapuntal writing, in the choruses in particular and in the soprano aria 'O Quam Tristis'. It could have been written by Bach himself.
The two 'Crucifixus' settings by Lotti and Caldara are both examples of the old-style composition as it had developed by the late Baroque; the harmonic and expressive techlniques of the new style were applied to the old polyphony, providing a highly emotional vehicle for a creative composer.
Opera and cantata were the 2 principal forms which Alessandro Scarlatti practised, but he also composed some superb motets, two of which are featured on this disc. 'O Magnum Mysterium' is for double choir eight-part counterpoint. 'Domine refugium factus es nobis' is for five voices; it is in a style that relies much on sonorous harmony and counterpoint; in fact it has a grandeur that anticipates Handel.

I think that it is interesting to note that there are varied groups and soloists performing on these disc, and all are quite good. Pergolesi's 'Stabat Mater' is disappointing to me because it does not have a countertenor performing the alto part; it is really not authentic since at that time either 'castrati' or male altos did so. ON disc 2, there is a countertenor performing in the correct capacity, and I obviously prefer that disc. But all renditions are done skillfully, and you certainly have a lot of beautiful music included therein.

    5 out of 5 stars depressingly beautiful..........2006-12-17

I remember some years ago when I bought this album, being a hardcore fan of several 4AD acts and not knowing anything about RHP but a live concert review from Lizardlounge magazine, how a strong experience it was: the sparse and obscure production (remember that this was a compilation of some polished demo recordings) yet technically never in the low quality side, but the most important, a quite emotional concept, Mark's personal and miserable lyrics full of vulnerability and self research that drilled my soul immediately, I wondered how brave a guy must be to be able to sing this bared emotions without crumbling down or deviating to certain common places, that and the out of trend musical arrangements, the exotic tuning and minimalism of Gorden's guitar parts and the sometimes martial band drumming... this was something special and will be forever, probably a more complicated affair than the posterior bridge and rollercoaster albums but for me their best. Try it please.

4 out of 5 stars A perfect album no matter what mood you are in.......2006-11-03

This album ranks up there with most of the Red House Painters albums. Unbelievable lyrics and melodies. I am really glad I added this ablum to my Red House collection. Perfect for rainy days.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Few Flawless Albums in Existence.......2002-10-15

When I first bought this CD, I was actually pretty angry that it only had six songs. However, several of those songs are quite long, and so at least in terms of length, you don't get the feeling of just listening to an EP. It's also a concept album, even more than the other RHP records, because it is probably the most concentrated on one issue: emotional breakdown.

The album begins by taking apart the issue of growing older and dealing with the anxiety of losing youth. Then, you get two tracks both concentrating on the difficulties of effectively communicating emotion to a lover in a very intense relationship and the consequences involved. "Down Colorful Hill" is at the heart of the album and sums up the desperation Kozelek feels in his "prayers for success". (This could possibly mean the success of his career, as well, but more than likely it's just success in general.) "Lord Kill the Pain" is a very sarcastic song that wishes the rest of the world would just die so Kozelek wouldn't have to deal with anyone or anything anymore. The real genius of the album comes in with the closer "Michael", which is perhaps the most touching song, lyrically, I have ever come across. In it, Kozelek recounts his youthful experiences with his friend who ended up become a worthless bum many years after their friendship. For Kozelek to label such a person as his "best friend" shows an insight into human love that most people, let alone musicians, don't have the capacity for.

I fell in love with the lyrics of this album first, and then slowly I came to love the music. I don't know if it's the best place to start if you're trying to get into RHP, though. I think Rollercoaster or Retrospective are probably the best places to start. I highly recommend DOWN COLORFUL HILL to the already-interested RHP/Kozelek fans.

3 out of 5 stars An imperfect first album, but "Medicine Bottle" astounds.......2002-09-14

DOWN COLORFUL HILL was the debut of Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek's exploration-of-angst band that put out some of the most haunting music on the 4AD label. While it is very immature compared to the albums that came after it, in fact this is the band's demo tape for the label, DOWN COLORFUL HILL does give a glimpse of the potential of Kozelek and the skilled musicians Anthony Koutsos (drums), Gordon Mack (guitar), and Jerry Vessel (bass).

In "24", Kozelek expresses fear of his own mortality and the feeling that his life is amounting to nothing. It is slow but by no means boring, in fact its pace matches the lyricism perfectly.

The highlight of the album is definitely "Medicine Bottle", an elegy for a broken relationship that goes for nearly ten minutes. In it, Kozelek sings of the pain of losing a girlfriend because she could not understand that he, like all people, could not put into words his deepest thoughts. The listener is amazed as he sings "I do not want to lose / the thrill that it gives me to look out from my window / and scowl at the houses from my world in the bedroom. / It's all in his head she read / in a girlfriend's self-help book..." It was remarkable how Kozelek could express the angst so many men feel between adolescence and 30.

"Japanese to English" is ambitious and musically brilliant, and closely follows "Medicine Bottle". It does suffer a bit from Kozelek's failure to consistent match the beat of the lyrics to the instrumentation, but the listener doesn't notice it much under the right-on-target drumming of Koutsos and the the lush guitar.

Unfortunately, some of the album is not as strong. "Lord Kill the Pain" is so dull as to be unlistenable. "Michael", a tale of a friend lost to deliquency, is difficult for the reader to grasp if he or she has never been in the same situation.

DOWN COLORFUL HILL is probably not the best introduction to Red House Painters. Their first self-titled album, referred to as the "Rollercoaster cover", is an easier listen and includes the perfect "Katy Song." However, if you've enjoyed other RHP albums, DOWN COLORFUL HILL is worth getting for "Medicine Bottle" alone.

    5 out of 5 stars A true artist gifted with extra-ordinary talent..........2002-01-07

His soul plays the quitar, His heart sings the lyrics. No pretension, No excuses, no fear, just pure truth.
He graciously and honestly shares with us his intimate, and personal life memories and experiences. He tells us of his delicate observations of others that come into his life through a lover or a friend. Many songs are of lost loves, heartbreak and lost friends, because Mark writes about the stuff of life that really matters. True to his passion and dedicated to his gift, with no compromises. I honor and thank him for the music he has given to us all. I am also grateful for the time I shared with him. The heartache that followed eventually became overshadowed by the joy of just being able to know him.
Down Colorful Hill is my favorite of all RHP cd's. Some favored songs are Michael, Medicine Bottle, Uncle Joe, Lord Kill the Pain, Katy Song, etc..etc, and all solo guitar. Amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Production vs. raw talent.......2007-01-12

The ONLY reason my review lacks a star is the production's excess affected the raw talent Katy posesses. I rememeber her voice from sitting at lunch with her in 9th grade as one of her best friends at the time: "Katy, sing for us!" everyone said. Katy's voice needs never to be "enhanced" by the hollywood pseudo-pop backgroud noise like some of the big pop stars (yeah, i'm thinking Britney, Jessica S., etc.). She is one of the few who have always had the strong, clear, emotionally-charged voice you get goosebumps from just listening to her. Not to mention the vocal maturity for her age.
I just got a hold of one single called "Don't Worry" which was done in at Dream Center Recording Studio in LA (213)273-7000, Producer Dave Henley, and ended up on a compilation album. It was recorded in '99 (Katy was 14) with Guitarist Mark and myself on violin. Although not the best quality recording, Katy's voice on this track along with the raw guitar and violin exposes and isolates her beautiful vocal strength without overpowering it with that hollywood noise I talked about.
The track "Don't Worry" can also be found on another album I saw a long time ago but can't recall the name for, but it is also overproduced.
A capella, Katy would absolutely SHINE and I hope she is continuing to sing to "make it big" because she is that good. Not to mention the fact that SHE WROTE most of her songs! I was there when she wrote "Spit" and she pulled that out of nowhere and had it down within hours. one word: TALENTED.
Before she made this album, Katy was a strong, carefree/spontaneous yet grounded woman. Her personality, if you have seen her in concert or know her personally, reflects and gives her voice a depth that only some can truly appreciate and understand on a different level.
Please support her by buying her albums!

3 out of 5 stars A great talent but get another producer next time!.......2003-12-16

I first heard Katy Hudson on a Christian TV show a few years back playing an acoustic version of "Growing pains".I dont really listen to much Christian music but I thought her performance, the way she related to the audience,to be fantastic.I then heard the same song on her album and I was very dissapointed. Not because of Katy, but because of the producer who turned a great song into an overblown broadwayesque production .I dont know who he or she is but the record company shouldnt let this person near her on the next CD.What would be great for Ms.Hudson would be a nice stripped down acoustic/electric band.Too bad she cant get someone like Freedy Johnston, another singer songwriter to produce it.They would make a great team.

4 out of 5 stars More to come from Katy Hudson.......2003-03-29

I really enjoyed her first album and can't wait for her second album, to see how much she's progressed. I'm hoping for an album that's not over-produced, as I feel this was just a bit over the top. None the less, I think everyone should hear this singer. For an 18 year old (16 when the CD released), I'm very, very, impressed.

3 out of 5 stars good for the short term.......2003-02-25

Katy Hudson's debut is notable for the fact that while she is a teenager, the album does not feel like it is your typical cookie cutter, bubble gum garbage. There is honesty and some emotional depth to this album. Hudson also did most of her own songwriting. The music is age appropriate for Hudson and does not feel as forced as that from today's pop stars (some Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc).

While songs like "Growing Pains" and "Faith Won't Fail" are highlights of the album, the album itself does not hold up so well on repeat listening, and the more time goes by, the less special this album feels. With that said, Katy Hudson may very well be the real deal and as she grows older, her music may grow with it. If her talent, skill, and craft grows with Katy, she may make a fairly big mark on Christian music. I hope that she will. Until that day, this album only gets a mixed review.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!.......2002-05-17

I heard her demo before she even made it to the main stream, and then I was absolutely amazed. I couldn't wait for the cd to come out to stores. Her voice is astonishing along with the jazzy pop sounds. If you like Jennifer Knapp, then you will love this Cd. Actually even if you don't like it at first, it will grow on you. Her talent is very wide range and she is a cool kat in person at that.
