Amazon.com essential recording
Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Excellently performed, Not much Variety.......2007-01-12
The only problem with this particular recording is that I think Piazzolla is better heard in moderation. Piazzolla wrote in such a constrianed genre, (classical tango), and thus a whole hour of Piazzolla is a little much to take. This great album doesn't make for much of a great straight through listen, but is much better as a plesant surprise when the computer library or iPod is on shuffle.
A Classy CD.......2004-06-23
Great Music BUT - Stupid Sony CD.......2003-07-16
Very good but not what I heard live in Cerritos.......2003-03-05
With that music, the subdued audience was enlightened. With only a Cello and a Piano, the music that was created was unbelievable. It was several months before the CD came out and I was a little disappointed that the energy that was present in the live concert did not translate to the CD. I hope that a Live recording or DVD will eventually be released which does capture the real Soul of the Tango.
Fantastic Marriage of Two Worlds.......2003-03-05
Piazzolla, a transcendent artist, was determined to broaden Tango's appeal and he did so admirably. Lovers of jazz and classical now appreciate this fusion and nowhere is it expressed better than this offering. Ma admits he was delighted with the chance to work with the other artists and though he is the star it is never totally given over to the cello. As much as I like the cello, it cannot hold a candle to the bandoneon, perhaps the closest thing to a human voice outside of humanity.
Some of these works are magnificent interpretations and in the case of Tango, what is important is staying true to the spirit and not the letter of the note. I love the subtle, whining melodies, the rising and falling of the "voice"...the continual yearning.
An added bonus is that this CD contains an introduction for the PC. One can watch an interview with the performer, view photos or watch a video that intersperces the playing of Yo Yo Ma with cutouts from the movie. But this is something I discovered two full years after listenting to the CD. Get this recording and enjoy.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad HendricksonAlbum Description
For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.Customer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Groovin'.......2005-06-29
Hunter's gorgeous Hammond organ-like guitar tone is famously present on most of this disc with his trademarked eight string taking endlessly inventive but rhythmically concise solos over Previte's highly arranged accompaniment. Utilizing an acoustic trap-set, a set of electronic drums as well as a sampler, all played live in the studio, Previte weaves a thick but unobtrusive web of sound. Sampled voices push the ambience past mere groove and into the realm of instrumental pop music.
Tonally, the duo delivers astounding variety. Previte's electronic drums ring out like detuned steel drums on "All Hell Breaks Loose," while Hunter's guitar tone on "Wave Link" is all reverb laden surf twang. Hunter even dips into a little gritty overdriven distortion on "Ow!" with Previte locking down a monolithic groove.
Their Groundtruther project, featuring an added third guest, transforms this duo into an ever evolving trio. This initial foray has a casual air of equitable improvisation without the experimental tendencies found on the later records. Filled with supple, mid-tempo lazy afternoon grooves, "Come In Red Dog, This Is Tango Leader" is an auspicious beginning for this pair.
Undistinguished, but growing on me.......2005-04-19
There is, admittedly, a somewhat cool loose-funk vibe pretty much all over this disc, and I do like the way it's mixed. But there's just not enough substance here. It sounds like the boys just went into the studio with a bunch of tune sketches and pretty much just let it all hang out. The percussive add-ons (bells, scratches, blips, voice samples) give the game away. Without them, Hunter's tired funk clichés and Previte's plodding drums don't amount to much. With them, there's a certain alien interest that, however, soon begins to wear thin.
On the other hand, perhaps this meeting spawned Groundtruther, the Hunter/Previte duo + one so far documented in the fine disc, Latitude, featuring Greg Osby. If that's the case, we should cut the lads a little slack. Plus, the price is about 20 percent below the normal disc. And, it does grow on you.
All told approaching, but not quite reaching, ****.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06
Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.
Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."
Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.
Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09
Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26
There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

Legitimate Tango in classical music.......2005-10-10
The work by Bacalov for three soloists is as unusual as it is simply beautiful, and a true work for our times. It shows the two main facets of the Tango, it's better known exciting dance rhythms as well as the evocative sadness of many of its themes.
The performances are tremendous. The Santa Barbara Symphony is first rate, and conductor Gisele Ben-Dor's superb direction elicits their inspired and exciting playing- particularly in the woodwinds. In my view, the bandoneon playing of Juanjo Mosalini is simply extraordinary, singling him out as a foremost artist of this achingly soulful instrument. Virginia Tola's beautiful voice and authentic Argentine style are simply perfect for the part. Finely, Luis Bacalov - who composed the Academy winner score for "Il Postino" - has produced a striking and original work imbued with Tango to enrich the classical repertoire and for a large orchestra.
I wholeheartedly recommend this recording for any classical music lover as well as Tango lovers and for those who, like me, find that folk and popular music have inspired the greatest composers, from Haydn to Stravinsky.
Unsung Heroes of Tango.......2005-10-09
I produced this recording in three sessions over the course of one day in Santa Barbara. The town was still in the grip of its own love affair with Tango, caused by Ben-Dor's week long Tango Festival. It was a remarkable day and the result is a remarkable recording.
