Amazon.com essential recording

Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellently performed, Not much Variety.......2007-01-12

Yo-Yo Ma leads an all-star cast in his "Sould of the Tango" project. He offers fresh new arrangements of Piazzolla's masterpieces including "Libertango," "Tango Suite," "Fugatta," and more. The arrangements are expertly performed and the playing is exciting and energetic. There is a lush palatte of sound colors coming from guitars, cellos, pianos and the bandoneon. The music is beautiful and flashy. Pieces are reorchestrated such as the "Tango Suite" pieces which are originally guitar duos now with a cello in the mix and the last track on the album, "Cafe 1930" was originally flute and guitar but Ma performs it on cello and bandoneon. The result is freshly interpreted Piazzolla masterpieces that feature new sound color and new perspective. The music is really quite enchanting.

The only problem with this particular recording is that I think Piazzolla is better heard in moderation. Piazzolla wrote in such a constrianed genre, (classical tango), and thus a whole hour of Piazzolla is a little much to take. This great album doesn't make for much of a great straight through listen, but is much better as a plesant surprise when the computer library or iPod is on shuffle.

5 out of 5 stars A Classy CD.......2004-06-23

Great intro to tango, great to relax and read to.

1 out of 5 stars Great Music BUT - Stupid Sony CD.......2003-07-16

I love this music - plays great on my CD player, but when I tried to play it on my computer at work, I wouldn't work. Sony wanted me to install something that didn't work on my machine (my computer is farely new), so I ended up having a friend copy the music over to a new CD without all that SONY stuff they use to stop pirating probably. Now I can listen at work and it is wonderful. BUT BEWARE ON BUYING CDs like this!

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not what I heard live in Cerritos.......2003-03-05

When I first heard Yo-Yo Ma live in Cerritos several years ago, his closing piece was from the yet released Soul of the Tango.
With that music, the subdued audience was enlightened. With only a Cello and a Piano, the music that was created was unbelievable. It was several months before the CD came out and I was a little disappointed that the energy that was present in the live concert did not translate to the CD. I hope that a Live recording or DVD will eventually be released which does capture the real Soul of the Tango.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Marriage of Two Worlds.......2003-03-05

I have always thought that Tango deserved a more elevated standing with both professional and amateur music lovers and what better way to attain that wish than having Yo Yo Ma join in for a session.(Is that a question or statement?) This is a remarkable CD that ranges a wide spectrum of Tango music, most of it exciting, sensual and daring.

Piazzolla, a transcendent artist, was determined to broaden Tango's appeal and he did so admirably. Lovers of jazz and classical now appreciate this fusion and nowhere is it expressed better than this offering. Ma admits he was delighted with the chance to work with the other artists and though he is the star it is never totally given over to the cello. As much as I like the cello, it cannot hold a candle to the bandoneon, perhaps the closest thing to a human voice outside of humanity.

Some of these works are magnificent interpretations and in the case of Tango, what is important is staying true to the spirit and not the letter of the note. I love the subtle, whining melodies, the rising and falling of the "voice"...the continual yearning.

An added bonus is that this CD contains an introduction for the PC. One can watch an interview with the performer, view photos or watch a video that intersperces the playing of Yo Yo Ma with cutouts from the movie. But this is something I discovered two full years after listenting to the CD. Get this recording and enjoy.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-07-15

This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22

I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.

5 out of 5 stars relaxation.......2007-05-13

This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-07

Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.

5 out of 5 stars Talented violinist.......2007-03-29

When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-28

The best album by piazzolla I have played. the violin playing by antonio agri on milonga del angel is the very best and really captures the tango. My only regret is that the album did not include oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars He's got the soul.......2003-07-02

Piazzola must be the devil.... cause he certainly captured the soul (of tango, that is!)

Brilliant music. Exceptional CD!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST for the Piazzolla neophyte!.......2000-12-21

I have more than ten Piazzolla CDs and this is my favorite. It's actually the first one of his that I ever bought, and I think that this is probably the best CD that a beginner to Piazzolla and Modern Argentine Tango could buy. It has a generous sampling of the several hundred songs that Astor Piazzolla wrote in his life, and it consists mainly of live recordings, which adds to the intensity of each piece. Interestingly enough, there are nearly 200 CDs of Piazzolla music (if not more), and even the songs in the ones recorded by Piazzolla himself vary significantly from album to album. This one, however, is a real joy and will get anyone's toes tapping.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Maestro!!.......2000-11-27

Oh dear God, how to describe the music that came out of this album? Maybe we should make an exception and allow a six star rating in this case. Astor Piazzolla is for me the best composer of the 20th century and one of the best of all time. The way he can make music dance in you head and trigger emotions from deep within you is stunning. It is impossible to describe the way he puts music together into some of the most powerful music ever heard and at the same time doing it in a way tango had never been done before. Maestro Piazzolla completely changed tango into something new, something some people don't even consider tango anymore. He'll shred your soul and make you lose all hope in your life and suddenly fill you with hope and a sense of awe. Every person who take music seriously and can appreciate art must own something by Astor Piazzolla; and feel the blessing of immersing in its brilliance.

4 out of 5 stars Groovin'.......2005-06-29

"Come In Red Dog, This Is Tango Leader" documents the first meeting between guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer, percussionist and composer Bobby Previte. Their initial recording has a relaxed, atmospheric soulfulness that belies the shape that the duo's future collaborations would take on.

Hunter's gorgeous Hammond organ-like guitar tone is famously present on most of this disc with his trademarked eight string taking endlessly inventive but rhythmically concise solos over Previte's highly arranged accompaniment. Utilizing an acoustic trap-set, a set of electronic drums as well as a sampler, all played live in the studio, Previte weaves a thick but unobtrusive web of sound. Sampled voices push the ambience past mere groove and into the realm of instrumental pop music.

Tonally, the duo delivers astounding variety. Previte's electronic drums ring out like detuned steel drums on "All Hell Breaks Loose," while Hunter's guitar tone on "Wave Link" is all reverb laden surf twang. Hunter even dips into a little gritty overdriven distortion on "Ow!" with Previte locking down a monolithic groove.

Their Groundtruther project, featuring an added third guest, transforms this duo into an ever evolving trio. This initial foray has a casual air of equitable improvisation without the experimental tendencies found on the later records. Filled with supple, mid-tempo lazy afternoon grooves, "Come In Red Dog, This Is Tango Leader" is an auspicious beginning for this pair.

3 out of 5 stars Undistinguished, but growing on me.......2005-04-19

Charlie Hunter and Bobby Previte have made many fine records. I regret to say this is not one of them.

There is, admittedly, a somewhat cool loose-funk vibe pretty much all over this disc, and I do like the way it's mixed. But there's just not enough substance here. It sounds like the boys just went into the studio with a bunch of tune sketches and pretty much just let it all hang out. The percussive add-ons (bells, scratches, blips, voice samples) give the game away. Without them, Hunter's tired funk clichés and Previte's plodding drums don't amount to much. With them, there's a certain alien interest that, however, soon begins to wear thin.

On the other hand, perhaps this meeting spawned Groundtruther, the Hunter/Previte duo + one so far documented in the fine disc, Latitude, featuring Greg Osby. If that's the case, we should cut the lads a little slack. Plus, the price is about 20 percent below the normal disc. And, it does grow on you.

All told approaching, but not quite reaching, ****.

Seems like only yesterday the Kronos Quartet stepped up their career as musical mavericks with a coveted, wide-open contract with Nonesuch Records. Now it's Nonesuch's turn to give Kronos the big-package nod, gathering key works recorded by the group--from younger composers and time-tested veterans alike--into this 10-CD box set. As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06

It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.

Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.

Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."

Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09

I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26

Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.

There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

5 out of 5 stars How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19

My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.

5 out of 5 stars Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28

The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Legitimate Tango in classical music.......2005-10-10

Hearing a world premiere of a serious work for large orchestra ( apparently the only one by Piazzolla) is exhilarating, and elicits thoughts of the "what if..." kind, as much as it provides aural delight, particularly in the lovely - and interestingly developed- second movement and the pure excitement of the third. In my opinion, the "what if..." question relates to Piazzolla's development as a composer. He started out wanting to be a serious composer away from Tango yet upon the advice of Nadia Boulanger - the famous Parisian teacher- he desisted and concentrated on re-creating and reanimating Tango - his Tango Nuevo- in a manner which occasionally incorporated the orchestra and with an approach not far from Gershwin's or Duke Ellington's. The use of the bandoneon as a solo instrument in a "concertante" capacity ( meaning in a symbiotic relationship with the orchestra as opposed to the more typical classical soloist , who is pitted "against" the orchestra in a dialogue format) is very interesting in itself.

The work by Bacalov for three soloists is as unusual as it is simply beautiful, and a true work for our times. It shows the two main facets of the Tango, it's better known exciting dance rhythms as well as the evocative sadness of many of its themes.

The performances are tremendous. The Santa Barbara Symphony is first rate, and conductor Gisele Ben-Dor's superb direction elicits their inspired and exciting playing- particularly in the woodwinds. In my view, the bandoneon playing of Juanjo Mosalini is simply extraordinary, singling him out as a foremost artist of this achingly soulful instrument. Virginia Tola's beautiful voice and authentic Argentine style are simply perfect for the part. Finely, Luis Bacalov - who composed the Academy winner score for "Il Postino" - has produced a striking and original work imbued with Tango to enrich the classical repertoire and for a large orchestra.

I wholeheartedly recommend this recording for any classical music lover as well as Tango lovers and for those who, like me, find that folk and popular music have inspired the greatest composers, from Haydn to Stravinsky.

5 out of 5 stars Unsung Heroes of Tango.......2005-10-09

Luis Bacalov, known primarily for his hauntingly evocative score for 'Il Postino' and his popular 'Misa Tango' has created a work of surpassing beauty with his Triple Concerto scored for the unusual combination of piano - played here by the composer - soprano, and bandoneon. It is a magical, memorable work that reveals both the virtuoso and achingly nostalgic side of Tango. His scoring for the orchestra is perfectly realized by Gisele Ben-Dor, a conductor who deserves to be much better known, and the Santa Barbara Symphony. In Piazolla's never before recorded Symphonic Movements, she unleashes a torrent of musical passion and power. Listen to its final movement for truly exhilirating musical experience. The bandoneon soloist, Juanjo Mosalini Jr, astonishes with his facility and musicianship throughout the recording and is another unsung musical star. Whether playing lyrically in Piazolla's Oblivion or in the daunting Bacalov cadenza movement, Mosalini is a one man tour de force. Soprano Virginia Tola, a Domingo discovery, sings the lovely text, composed by Bacalov with a voice of genuine beauty.

I produced this recording in three sessions over the course of one day in Santa Barbara. The town was still in the grip of its own love affair with Tango, caused by Ben-Dor's week long Tango Festival. It was a remarkable day and the result is a remarkable recording.

The original Italian edition of these six tangos was written in 1974 in Milan with the title Libertango and received the Italin film critic prize for its recording. This piano version was written in a very polyphonic manner. Up to 5 voices can be heard at the same time. An outstanding performance, with a mixture of rhythmic energy and most expressive melodic themes that pour out of your soul and are intensely heartfelt.
