Irish troubadour Damien Rice doesn't so much reinvent the folk genre on this lush, impossibly mature debut album as push its boundaries in several compelling musical directions at once--all the more remarkable considering the album was largely self-produced and home-recorded. His songs revolve around familiar, bittersweet concerns of life, love, and their attendant frustrations, but delivered with conspiratorial intimacy on melodic wings (like on the graceful "Cannonball") that Rice seems almost embarrassed to share. If there's anything like a template here, it's "The Blower's Daughter," the song that first attracted the interest/stewardship of film composer David Arnold (whose guest production provides "Amie" with expansive cinematic elegance) and became a massive Irish hit. His plaintive vocal, embroidered by the mournful solo cello of Vyvienne Long, is suddenly brightened by an instrumental flourish and Lisa Hannigan's vocals--before just as quickly wafting on the breeze. With touches that range from "Day in the Life"-styled string collages to the dizzy, exhilarating neo-operatic excesses of the 16-minute "Eskimo," Rice's musical palate here is as adventurous as his songs are grounded in emotional intimacy. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Damien Rice's intriguing brand of stylishly, un-styled dirty folk music has made him one of the standout artists of 2003. O was first released in Ireland, where it quickly broke the top ten, and achieved triple-platinum status. Slim hard-back digipak. Vector. 2003.

5 out of 5 stars And so it is, just like you said it would be.......2007-06-17

If there's ever been an album so hopelessly beautiful as Damien Rice's "O," I've yet to hear it. It's not a glittering beauty like the early music of Enya, nor a razor-edged beauty like Radiohead's "OK Computer" or the falsetto of Coldplay's Chris Martin. No, "O" is in a category all by itself. The title, a single, apparently meaningless letter, is so fitting for the record. Like the record, there's a beautiful simplicity to it, but close examination reveals a delightful intricacy. And so it is with Damien Rice's music. The Irish folk troubadour's sincerety, clear in each of his heart-tuggingly poetic compositions, is a welcoming nakedness that shines through his bittersweet vocals.

The magic's in the arrangements as well as the vocals, though - the echoing guitar and longing cello in the record's highlight, the dazzling "Blower's Daughter" (well-used as the main theme for Mike Nichol's screen adaptation of "Closer"); the mixture of classic and contemporary instruments which fall like an avalanche in "Cheers Darlin'"; the consciously insane opera in the wonderful "Eskimo." Rice is aware of the craziness of this world, but he's more interested in the simple beauty of it: things like the wind in your hair or the sun setting over a field. Lisa Hannigan's smooth, breezy vocals support Rice, who knows just when to let her soar. In fact, Rice knows when to do everything. His timing is impeccable. He knows when to sing, when to let Hannigan sing, when to bring in the violins - even when to let the opera singer loose.

There are by no standards any bad or even lackluster pieces on "O." There are some that are more extraodinary than others, however: along with "Blower's Daughter," the reflective "Cold Water," the bitter "Cheers Darlin'," the wise "Volcano," the another-day folk of "Older Chests," and the soaring lunacy that is "Eskimo" (hang around throughout "Eskimo" to hear two hidden tracks, the excellent, bombastic "Prague" and Hannigan's cynical take on "Silent Night"). As an added bonus, each song works equally well seperately or together with the rest of the album. I'd highly recommend buying the album as opposed to downloading the songs, though. Almost impossibly beautiful, "O" was one of the best records of 2003 (the best?) and remains one of the best of the decade.

5 out of 5 stars My Most Prized Possession.......2007-06-17

Hands down this CD is my most cherished cd out the 100 or so that i have. Nothing else compares! I love all the songs on it,(except volcano)which is very rare, Most of cds i normally like three or four. But this, this is unreal, you have to have it. As soon as he released it in the states I bought it. And i heard his music long before they decided to sell it here. My all time favorite is Blower's Daughter,Cold Water,I Remember,Older Chests, Ohh i can't make up my mind. There all good, and Damien,Damien is Great!

Not quite as endearing as his raw and seductive 2002 debut, O, the second full-length album by Irish troubadour Damien Rice finds him taking a more slapdash approach to his lyrics and arrangements, with balmy tracks like "Rootless Tree," "Coconut Skins," and "Me, My Yoke, and I" seemingly made up and recorded on the spot. Strange then that it took so long for 9 to actually arrive, with just a handful of odd collaborations (Tori Amos, Herbie Hancock) and one promising benefit single ("Unplayed Piano") to hold fans over during the four-year delay. Nothing here quite achieves the lush poetry on display there, although Rice and his singing companion Lisa Hannigan come close with the creepy opening track "9 Crimes" and the damaged whisper-to-a-scream ballad, "Elephant." --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

9 is the extraordinary follow-up to young Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice's critically acclaimed 2003 debut album O-which sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, including more than one million in the U.K. The single "9 Crimes" will have its network television debut on the hit ABC show Grey's Anatomy in the November 23rd episode.

5 out of 5 stars Secret treasure.......2007-07-07

I loved his first cd, especially Volcano. The lady who does the backing vocal stole my heart. The strings are simple and powerful. This cd seems to follow on the same path. It reminds me of a secret treasure not many folks know about. I am not sure why this man is not a major star, perhaps marketing, perhaps timing. His voice and talent are hard to deny. I will listen and continue to be a fan. As for the lyrics advisory, don't sweat it. You hear worse on CNN.

5 out of 5 stars Is a good CD.......2007-07-03

worth getting it indeed but the best experience from this artist I believe are the live performances. So if its possible, go to one of his shows.

5 out of 5 stars This is pure genius.......2007-06-29

This album is nothing short of genius, and its even better than O. Listen carefully and play it the whole way through and you will realise that. Its more heart-felt, more intense, its stronger, its sexier, its angrier, its darker and its more varied. There are some tracks on O where I feel he drones on a bit. Not on 9. I am grabbed by virtually all of the songs. For me, the stand out tracks are Rootless Tree and Accidental Babies. I saw Damien Rice play most of this album live at Radio City in New York and he was simply unbelievable. If you get the chance, do not hesitate to see this man live. The emotion was pouring out of him. Go buy this album.

4 out of 5 stars I love this man.......2007-06-08

Damien has continued to keep me intrigued, with his intense singing and moving lyrics, I can't stop listening. This latest cd isnt as firey as the first, a bit sobering, but it still packs a punch. Especially like "The Animals were gone".

4 out of 5 stars One case where I prefer O to 9.......2007-06-05

I don't envy Damien Rice having to follow his first CD and "Unplayed Piano." He's one of the best singer-songwriters to come out of this era--so far--and I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more from this poetic Irish bard.

But, there's still a lot to like about Damien Rice's second release. The title track "Nine Crimes" is probably my favorite of this collection, but I wouldn't skip any either. Even "Coconuts" which I felt was kind of off the cuff, is still good music.

If U2 hadn't already released a pair of career retrospective discs, this British trio's second album would neatly do the trick in one. Not much of a surprise since Keane spent a good deal of time supporting Bono and company following the release their breakthrough debut, Hopes and Fears. From the melancholic "Crystal Ball" to the sinisterly beautiful "Is It Any Wonder?" (a blatant homage to "Zoo Station"), Keane have perfected their forebear's dark stadium-rock formula on their second album, all the more miraculous considering it was once again done without guitars. If Under the Iron Sea sounds considerably edgier than its predecessor, that's because it was recorded while the band was on the verge of splitting. But the friction has also given Keane a renewed sense of purpose, breaking the mid-tempo monotony with vibrant material such as "Nothing in My Way" and "Try Again": soaring songs that make the band sound unsinkable. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

"Under The Iron Sea" was recorded at The Magic Shop in Soho, New York, and back at Helioscentric Studios, near Battle.

In making this record we tried to confront all our worst fears, to ruthlessly scrutinise ourselves, our relationship with each other, with other people, and with the world at large, and to make a journey into the darkest places we could find.

It made for an incredibly intense atmosphere during the writing and recording of the album, and the resultant songs and sounds very much reflect that. In the songs we created a kind of sinister fairytale-world-gone-wrong, a feeling of confusion and numbness represented by a dark place under an impenetrable iron sea. To express all this we created entirely new sounds by putting an old electric piano and various analogue synths through many different combinations of vintage guitar effects pedals, creating soundscapes that range from the percussive to vast oppressive walls of distortion.

We were writing, singing and performing with a drive, intensity and fury that is almost unrecognisable from our previous music.

It was important that this album had a strong visual presence too, and the start of that was the collaboration with Irvine Welsh on ¡®Atlantic¡¯ offered somebody who both inspired us, and found his own inspiration in our music.

His resulting film echoes the importance of that visual identity we strove for.

We wrote Under The Iron Sea because we needed a record that was going to make us feel alive again.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic singles.......2007-06-27

While the album does have a few forgettable tracks, the singles are amazing and worth the cost of the CD. Fans of Coldplay will be drawn to this band and should definitely give Keane a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Really like it.......2007-06-25

Got it after hearing Blake Lewis sing one of their songs, Somewhere Only We Know. I love listening to this in my jeep..fun, carefree cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great band!.......2007-06-20

I love the singer's voice. The lyrics are pretty good too. Great sound for a 3 man band.

5 out of 5 stars Another one for the heartbreak can[n]on.......2007-06-04

Not for nothing did HOPES AND FEARS' breakout "Somewhere Only We Know" include the line "This could be the end of everything". And not for nothing did the b&w simplicity of that record's graphics give way to an icy blue Siberian landscape, inscrutable feminine faces, broken soldiers lying in the snow.

With their propulsive, shifting rhythms and mesmerizing, serpentine melodies, the best songs on IRON SEA are shoutouts to the heartbroken -- tumbling mixes of incredulity, anguish and rage -- and this is one of those discs you will play 5000 times in a row the next time it happens to you. Hey, you did it with "Every Breath You Take" -- but the stalker self-pity that was thrilling when you were a kid and everything was crystal clear no longer seems so useful at an age where things are a leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetle more complicated.

Musically, Keane has mastered the art of baroque-pop in a way that only a few have: their songs have the standout quality of being consistently surprising and perfectly inevitable at the same time.

So it isn't perfect and it won't change the world, but IRON SEA is a minor masterpiece -- a swirling, complex companion to Basho's great, stark haiku, just as true and just as uncomforting:

I think of the day before I met her
When it seemed
I had no troubles at all

5 out of 5 stars Under the Iron Sea is Golden.......2007-05-22

I am not a fan of Keane. In fact, I hated their first album and did not notice when the second album released. However, after hearing "Is It Any Wonder?" on the radio (about 200 times) I thought I would check it out. The sound seemed to have more edge; it captured more of a rock feel, and I liked that. Not to mention, I don't know who can't relate to the lyrics of "Is It Any Wonder?" these days.

I ordered the album and when it came I popped it into my stereo and sat down. I listened to the whole CD. Then I listened to it again. I was dazzled by the intersecting rhythm lines, key changes, the poor lyric scansion that seems to rhyme even though it shouldn't, and the tenor of Tom Chaplain's voice. This album has depth. It encompasses a sound that has been established by the Beatles and has evolved up through bands like Cold Play and Radio Head; Yet it has a little irreverence, giving it a feeling of angst that makes it more interesting to listen to. It's industrial enough to sit in the "Rock" section of your local record store, yet it's still technically a "Pop" album.

I highly recommend this album. It truly is a fresh sound and feel. It will appeal to rock folks, as well as pop people. If I were on the panel for album of the year I certainly would've voted for this one!

An Oscar win might suggest a score that would need a miracle to be bettered--but this colorful stage adaptation of Disney's The Lion King does so with flair. Composers Mark Mancina and Lebo M worked closely together to fuse the movie's many disparate elements. Where there was a veritable army exercising creative influences for the animated tale, this brings it all under the wings of a like-minded few. This is genuinely apparent as one track flows into the next. The African rhythms--both vocal and in instrumentation--come across as authentic and original all at once. No doubt this is largely through Mancina's passion for peculiar instruments and the possibilities suggested from nightly live performances. "Grasslands Chant" is a good place to hear this. The hit favorites are here of course, but both "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" are pleasingly unrecognizable with chorus and shifting beats. Better still is the likelihood they will now be eclipsed by some of the new numbers. Mancina's own "He Lives in You" being a strong contender. With a sound mix as crisp as you'd hope to find, this is rousing stuff. --Paul Tonks

4 out of 5 stars Choose this one over the movie soundtrack..........2007-06-28

I bought this cd after seeing the show on broadway. If you like the African-influenced music present in the movie version of the Lion King, all of the original is present here as well as some really good new stuff. My favorite of the new songs is "Shadowland", which really just takes some recognizable background music from the movie and adds lyrics to it. other standouts include "He Lives in You", which you may have heard if you saw The Lion King 1 1/2, and the song Simba sings after his father has died.

I took off one star because I am not a fan of the singer portraying Scar in this recording, and I don't like most of his songs or those the hyenas sing. But the excellence of everthing else makes up for it.

We had just gone to NY in March 07 and saw the play live. The CD is just as beautiful and the music brings tears to my eyes. My five year old knows all the words. We play it on the way to school and back everyday. He particularly likes "I just can't wait to be King".

This soundtrack is just as breathtaking as watching the musical and brings back all of the memories of NYC! This is the original cast recording, so if you've seen the production recently, most of the actors aren't the same; just keep that in mind.

Way back in 1991, many of us saw the single-handed salvation and revival of the old-fashioned American-style Broadway musical comedy. True, it was in the form of a feature-length Disney cartoon, but Beauty and the Beast had it all: a wonderful, tuneful score (including a huge hit title-song), off-the-wall choreography, a great opposites-attract love story with an ultimately happy ending, comic subplots, colorful period costumes, a romantic location in small-town France, and an irresistible cast, including Angela Lansbury as the voice of a teapot. Alan Menken's songs, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, literally introduced the characters ("Belle" and "Gaston") and carried them gracefully through the old fairy tale with its new animated twists. Disney understandably decided to transpose this cinematic miracle to the Broadway stage in 1992. Beauty and the Beast at the fabled Palace Theatre has done as much as anything to revive New York's theatre district; it led to a similar animated film-to-stage transfer of The Lion King, which allowed for the magnificent restoration of the 1902 New Amsterdam Theatre, which was the cornerstone of the cleanup of 42nd Street, which in turn transformed Times Square and "Broadway" into the world's number-one tourist destination. And we're all terribly grateful. But, on stage, Beauty and the Beast was flat, and most of that lack of fizz is, alas, captured on compact disc. The good songs are all here, such as "Be Our Guest," but the performances of them are mostly perfunctory--the exception being the vocal renderings of Susan Egan as Belle, the Beauty. Further, the Disneyfication of the Broadway musical seems to extend to faceless and interchangeable (read: cheap to hire) players, a practice that extends to The Lion King. The only "names" in the original Beauty and the Beast cast were Beth Howland as the teapot and Tom Bosley, a mere shadow of his former Fiorello, as Belle's father. Even worse, unlike The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast was not reinvented for the stage. It's my theory that the kids who made up the live audience (and many of their parents) were filling in the blanks from repeated viewings of the cartoon on video. If you're willing to do the same when only listening, this CD might do. But why, when the movie soundtrack album is available? --Robert Windeler

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-16

I bought this for my wife and daughter before they went to see the play on broadway. They really enjoyed listening to the music before seeing the play. Great for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Music from my all-time favorite Disney movie, plus some!.......2007-06-28

This show was the first broadway show I ever saw. Of course it was a good choice for me, because the source material is my favorite Disney movie, and one of my top ten favorite movies, period.

All the original music from the movie is here, and (somewhat surprisingly) all the songs they added for broadway fit in seamlessly and really add to character development. The new songs are:

"Me" - this is one of my favorite additions, it's a semi-proposal from Gaston to Belle and the lyrics are very funny. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.

"Home" - A song Belle sings when she first comes to the Beast's castle, it shows her determination in the face of despair. Beautiful vocals by Susan Egan, who makes a great Belle. She also plays Megara in "Hercules"

"If I Can't Love Her" - A song for the Beast that helps to make him a sympathetic character earlier in the show. It is a good song and fulfills its purpose, but I am not a big fan of the actor who plays the Beast

"Mason de Lunes" - Another song for Gaston as he lays down his plan to lock Belle's father in the insane asylum. Not as funny as "Me" but still great.

Out of all the new and old songs, however, my favorite music on the cd is the instrumental "Transformation" I could listen to that every day.

4 out of 5 stars Original Bway Cast Recording is not what the show ended up being.......2007-06-22

If you are looking for an accurate recording of the Broadway show (that is available for rental through MTI), you should get the London or Australian Cast Recording of the show. The OBCR was recorded BEFORE the Broadway run even started rehearsals, so it does not reflect many, many lyric changes, music changes, and dance arrangements that happened between the show's Houston tryout and Broadway opening. Granted, there are waonderful performances on this CD, but if you want to know what the show ended up being for nealry all of its thirteen-plus-year run, get London.

3 out of 5 stars i am pretty upset!.......2007-06-09

ok, so i love beauty and the beast and broadway, but this cd makes me mad. it doesn't have the song "A Change in Me" that is from the broadway musical. and for the song "Home," it doesn't have the lyrics from the show, it has the alternate lyrics that are meant to be used when you sing the song anywhere but the show. the lyrics that are written in the book that came with the cd are the musical lyrics, but she doens't sing them. it is an ok cd, but if you can find a better one, please get that one and don't make the same mistake i did!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful score.......2007-05-09

After seeing a high-school production of Beauty & the Beast I felt the need to buy the soundtrack. It is wonderful-made me want to go see it on Broadway.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat completed the transition from cantata for schoolkids to big-budget glitzfest with Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival. Here's the 1992 Canadian version of that show, and even if it's not an ideal recording--Janet Metz as the narrator is no match for Laurie Beechman in the original Broadway cast and there's a little too much synthesizer in the orchestrations--this CD is valuable for the performance of former teen pop idol Donny Osmond as the title character. He's in excellent voice, and was so right for the role that he was selected to preserve it for the 2000 video production. And of course the songs are still here, showcasing Rice's witty lyrics and Lloyd Webber's chameleon tendencies--dabbling in country, calypso, French cafés, and a King-like pharaoh--as well as favorites "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Go Joseph." This production also includes the "Joseph Remix" (also known as the "Joseph Megamix"), a nine-minute medley of themes arranged with a heavy beat that was used for a kind of onstage aerobics routine as the show's postscript. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars JUST THE BEST.......2007-05-13

If you haven't seen this play yet, don't miss it if it comes to your town.
However, if you want to hear the music with Donny Osmond's voice, then buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Music!.......2007-03-08

It goes without saying that the music is fabulous, as ever. It's a timeless story and Donny Osmond still has a great voice. I bought the sound track after watching the movie over and over, so my point of view is biased toward the movie sound track. I found the narrator's voice on this CD to be a little too high-pitched for me, but I eventually got used to it. The French accent in "Those Canaan Days" was deliberately overdone and spoiled an otherwise interesting song. Other than that, the CD music was close enough to the movie sound track to be satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars We love it.......2007-01-17

This was for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She has every song memorized already. It was a good deal too!

2 out of 5 stars Unhappy with sound.......2007-01-09

I had bought an original cassette when I saw the show in Chicago. I was very excited to find this CD as I had worn the cassette out. I was however very disappointed with the quality of sound. I could not hear the lead singer over the chorus, no matter how I adjusted my speakers. I do not know if all these CD's are like this, but I would not recommend it due to poor quality of sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Family listening!.......2006-08-29

I used this DVD to teach the kids a song from Vacation bible school, and had a bunch of people ask me where I bought it. It was just what I needed.

For his second Broadway musical (and first time out writing a full show directly for the stage), Elton John certainly set his sights high by turning to one of the grandest of all operas as a source. His continued collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice has produced a work far closer to the agreeable pop style and formula of the team's Disney musical, The Lion King, than to the majesty and tragic passion of Verdi's opera. But the compelling tale of conflicting loyalties and star-crossed lovers--retooled in part by acclaimed playwright David Henry Hwang--inspires some of John's signature melodic felicity, as in "Elaborate Lives" and "Every Story Is a Love Story." And the original cast recording marks a dramatic leap forward from 1999's dreary mishmash studio concept album, thanks to the heat generated by Heather Headley and Rent star Adam Pascal as the forbidden lovers. Sherie René Scott can turn on a dime from a parodic stance ("My Strongest Suit") to sad resignation ("I Know the Truth"), while the three get to blend in the ensemble "A Step Too Far"--a pop counterpart to the intensity of operatic ensemble. The score touches on reggae and gospel, and on all-out rock balladry (where it's fun to hear Pascal clearly imitating John's characteristic vocal inflections), but it's most touching in the more reflective moments given to Headley's dignified Nubian princess. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2007-06-22

As soon as I saw the Touring group, I had to get this CD! The vocal performances required by these songs is just mind boggling! I love this story, I love the music and I love the lyrics!! It is the most exciting show I have ever seen up to this point for the sheer fact of the vocal performances. Sure, other productions such as Cats, Miss Saigon and 42nd Street have been entertaining and extremely enjoyable in their own right, but this one excited me! I highly recommend this CD and if you ever get the chance to see the show, DO IT!! You won't regret it!

(The only thing missing on the disc- and it's missing on any musical soundtrack- is the overture at the beginning and end of the production- those were awsome to hear also)

5 out of 5 stars An Impresive & Catchy Pop Musical .......2007-05-29

Aida, is an incredible musical. It consits of several catchy, belty, soulful songs that you find your self singing along to oftenly. The singing on the CD is fair and several impressive notes are belted out(i.e. the last note of "Dance Of The Robe). Heather Headly (Aida) has extremley soulful and beautiful voice, her songs "The Past Is A Lonley Land" and "Easy As Life" have come to be some of my favorites. Adam Pascal (Radames) has the capacity to hit high notes perfectly and clearly but at the same time he has a sharp tone to his voice that sometimes makes him hard to listen to, he sounds nice in "Fortune Favors The Brave" but his hard tone in "Enchantment Passing Through," makes me dislike the song. Sherie Rene Scott (Amneris) also has the capicity to belt high notes extremley well, but at times can sound like a little girl. Her song "My Strongest Suit," is probably the catchiest song on the album, but is extremley super-ficial and lacks meaning. She sounds mediocre in "Every Story Is A Love Story," but delivers a beautiful and heartbreaking performance in "I Know The Truth." All and all the three stars have good voices and this is an incredibly catchy and wonderful CD. This is what I consider to be the best broadway soundtrack around. The songs are definetly pop influenced (which some people may love or hate) and are better then the songs in "The Lion King" (Elton John wrote the music for that show as well). I highly reccomend this CD who loves pop-broadway and loves to sing along to soundtracks.

The Aida soundtrack is amazing, especially after seeing the show! The quality of the recording is wonderful and the songs are powerful. The lyrics are really poignant. I absolutely love it. The cd has been in my cd player for weeks and I find myself singing the songs all the time. I would recommend this soundtrack to any romantic!

Amazon.com essential recording

It may not have been the first rock opera (the Who's Tommy was released in 1969), but Jesus Christ Superstar was a legendary album long before it hit the stage, thanks to Tim Rice's compelling book and lyrics combined with Andrew Lloyd Webber's irresistible music. Telling the story of the last days of Christ from the point of view of Judas (Murray Head), the still-unmatched original cast also stars Deep Purple's Ian Gillan as Jesus and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, the role she made into a career (with a cameo on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). Decades later, such songs as "Superstar," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Heaven on Their Minds," and "Everything's Alright" still retain their extraordinary power. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Beyond doubt the best JC Superstar.......2007-06-09

I have as many as four versions of Lloyd-Webber's and Tim Rice's legendary masterpiece and this is the best one by far. Ian Gillan's performance is absolutely fantastic. Besides the process of remastering has been quite successful considering the fine sound one can appreciate listening to this 2 cd set. A beautiful libretto with full lyrics is also included. If I had to choose one single cast I would definitely keep this one. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars If exploring this opera rock- then this is the classical.......2007-05-14

I just saw the performance being done here in caracas, full orchestrated and in spanish.. surprisingly good..

Though not as impressed as I was when I saw the movie in my 20's.. what always stayed in my mind was the inerpretation of the original LP.. the dispair and intensity of judas in "Dammned for all time" its just too much... Ian Gilla's interpretation on getsamni is unique.. yet I think this is the only song that is best sang in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars original Jesus Christ Superstar with Ian Gillan.......2007-05-12

It had been years since I listened to this album and I was very pleased. It still holds up in every way. The music is rockin and the vocals from Ian are amazing. I wish they would have used him in the movie because Ted doesn't come close.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2007-05-07

I only wish the folks that put out the CD of the '73 movie had been as diligent to put out such a superior product! There is not ONE THING wrong with this CD, but I still find myself listening to Ted Neeley's version, tho it is harder to sing along to and sounds like they're singing in a tin can!
Ian Gillan is/was an amazing talent! This CD is a must-have for all JCS fans!

Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fun but flawed.......2007-05-07

in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.

first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.

SCORE 5 out of 5

the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5

BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5

HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5

so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.

despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09

This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-31

This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14

The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16

I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.

The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.

Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.

Two eclectic acoustic music veterans are better than one, as this second collaboration by singer-songwriter Peter Rowan and guitar virtuoso Tony Rice attests. Doubling their fun is the addition of bassist Bryn Davies and mandolinist Sharon Gilchrist, who provide female harmonies as well as instrumental support. Five of the eleven tunes are Rowan originals, highlighted by an almost eight-minute expansion of his "Moonlight Midnight," a favorite from his Old and in the Way days, giving Rice's guitar plenty of room to roam; as well as a revival of "The Walls of Time," written with Bill Monroe. The selection additionally ranges from the bittersweet beauty of Townes Van Zandt's "To Live Is to Fly" to a surprising dip into the songbook of Patti Smith, transforming her "Trespasses" into a tone-poem waltz with lilting three-part harmonies. Three straight spirituals bring the set to a soul-stirring close. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Acoustic music legends Peter Rowan and Tony Rice continue their fruitful collaboration with Quartet, which finds the pair joined by bassist/vocalist Bryn Davies and mandolinist/vocalist Sharon Gilchrist. Recorded after extensive touring, Quartet introduces a dynamic and cohesive band grounded in traditional bluegrass, yet capable of spinning out extended improvisational journeys. The band's repertoire is equally intriguing, ranging from songs by Townes Van Zandt and Patti Smith to bluegrass standards, traditional ballads ("Cold Rain and Snow"), and classic Rowan originals ("Dust Bowl Children" and a stunningly reinvented "Moonlight Midnight").

"The spellbinding synergy of Rowan's soulful serenades and Rice's masterful flatpicking ...it's almost as if the singer and accompanist are one in the same." - Bluegrass Now

"A musical marriage made in heaven." - Relix

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get a whole lot better than this........2007-06-17

This album is a terrific collection of five-star songs by the greatest living flatpicking country bluegrass guitarist and one of the greatest living country bluegrass songwriters. The best blend of the traditional bluegrass idiom with contemporary interpretive flair that I've heard. And listening to Tony Rice play the guitar is a religious experience.

5 out of 5 stars Just like live.......2007-06-09

I have heard many of these songs live, and this album captures the feeling of being there. Midnight Moonlight is one of the best jams I have ever heard. If you like Americana music, this album is a must have for your collection!!

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2007-03-30

Hi, guys. Nice to see some positive reviews of the Rowan/Rice album, "Quartet" up here. When I play this record in my kitchen, I always hit "play" again when it finishes. It is seamless. It seems too short when I get to the end (I want to start all over again, to quote The Band!). That's a good sign. I thought I'd never find another version of "Rain and Snow" that competed for my heart after hearing Muleskinner's version, with Peter's vocals from long ago. But this is so gorgeous; Sharon and Bryn's harmonies make it more ethereal; it's a different sound (Muleskinner is still 100% precious). Shady Grove is the "big O" notewise (y'all laugh). Haha, hey, ain't they all? That's a stunning cover of Martin's & the Osborne Brothers', etc., "Sunny Side of the Mountain." Peter has good ears for well-written songs in selecting
Patti Smith's "Trespasses." It's incredibly sensitive a song, a surprise, coming from a "punk priestess" (more to punk priestess than meets the eye). Gotta love it. Vicks

4 out of 5 stars Quartet improves over "I'll Be There for You".......2007-03-15

I loved the first album but the songs and guitar work on this album are much improved and it seems to reflect the additional touring the band has done. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-03-09

The old Bluegrass Boy, Peter Rowan and the great flat top guitar player Tony Rice have teamed up with two other musicians, mandolinist Sharon Gilchrist and bass player Bryn Davies to create some wonderful music. I love the vocals in Midnight Moonlight. Rowan cut Midnight Moonlight on the Old and In the Way in 1975 and this may be the best recording so far with a new energy that has you singing along. A great addition to your CD collection.
