5 out of 5 stars More Experimental.......2003-03-31

This CD is somewhat similar to its predecessor "Felona e Serona" in that it opens with a very ELP-like flourish on the title track, segues into a very nice acoustic piece (Frutto Acerbo), and then continues through a series of shorter pieces. What makes this CD more satisfying is that while retaining the trademark moodiness and the great melodies, Le Orme takes somewhat greater risks with their arrangements and compositions. For example, rhythmic experimentation increases as on "Aliante", which is just a 7/8 reworking of the "Apocalypse in 9/8" sub-section from "Suppers Ready" by Genesis, "India" is an odd piece that that uses unusual (for Le Orme) scales (hence the title "India"), and "Notturno" is a dark and atmospheric piece of minimalism played primarily on acoustic piano and organ, with various synthesizer and percussion effects in the background. Unfortunately, this experimentation comes at some cost, and the songs really don't flow as well as on "Felona e Serona" or Uomo di Pezza". Notwithstanding, this is a fantastic piece of music and is the last full-blown progressive work from Le-Orme. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

If you're searching for those 70's Moog sounds, they're all here. But perhaps it's not the Moog used here, but some Italian brand. At any rate the first track sounds like Le Orme doing a Tarkus type composition. Very complex indeed. Le Orme always seems to do an obligatory acoustic number for the second track on their albums, so expect that. It was on this album that I realized that the singer is trying to sound like Jon Anderson. But because of the Italian lyrics, you are not tempted to make that comparison. The rest of the album is more experimental compared to other Le Orme outtings, and has a heavier edge but still maintaining their trademark style. Because they only have three members the added effort on the keyboardist's part to play in a more busy fashion really fills out their sound. On some of their other works it seems that if they get a bit lazy you feel that some instrument is missing. I suppose that is because whoever is doing the singing cannot play their instrument as well when they sing so everything slows way down when there is singing. But I suppose that is part of their style. This is still equal to the best of their works.

5 out of 5 stars This is Excellent Avant-gaurd Power Trio Work!.......2002-11-28

For some reason, many progressive listener's do not like this release from Le Orme. There are not a lot of vocals in it and it is, in many ways, harder than some of their other stuff, but this recording stands on its own as is. It is darker than most of their stuff, so one might want to keep that in my when purchasing. Like "Welcome" by Santana was an "odd-ball" release, yet a cherished one. Thus, we could say that about this record. It is hard, dark and at times, complex.

3 out of 5 stars Very average.......2002-04-13

I was very disapointed with this cd. It is generally considered to be one of Le Orme's best, but I find it stagnant. I will say the vocalist is wonderful. He has a beautiful and expressive voice. However, musically I found the songs mundane and pedestrian. The biggest problem is that they just don't go anywhere. I kept expecting some kind of tempo change, or solo, or something, and it just never happened. Maybe if I put it away and try it again later, but after several listens, I just don't feel anything from this one.

4 out of 5 stars Le Orme delivers the goods, again.......2001-08-11

I actually own the original Italian LP. At first I thought it was a bit of a letdown compared the consistency and excellency of Felona e Sorona. I was almost ready to give Contrappunti a two star rating, but then it really grew on me. This album finds Le Orme a bit more on the experimental side, and I was a bit thrown off about that, but I got used to it. I do think some of the best keyboard work I've heard from Toni Pagliuca (at least of the Le Orme albums I've heard) can be found here, you get plenty of great lush Moog, string synths, and even a little Mellotron. Let's get with the songs on this album. The title track, all instrumental, sounds exactly like it came off an ELP or Triumvirat album, and this was the big reason why Le Orme was called the Italian ELP, but don't expect much of the rest of the album to sound like that. The second cut, "Frutto Acerbo" is an acoustic number in the grand tradition of Felona e Sorona's "Felona" and "All'Infuori del Tempo". "Aliente" sounds like Le Orme wanted to get funky, so you get yourself clavinet and some cool use of synths. "India" was the band being strange by adding some odd ethnic influences, including synthesizer attempting to sound like a sitar. Also there are some strange synth effects as well. "La Fabbricante D'Angeli" and "Maggio" are more or less typical Le Orme progressive numbers, although the latter is more adventurous, especially the cool synths that start the cut. In between those two cuts is "Notturno" which is basically a piano and synth piece, which sounds like it should have belonged on one of Eno's ambient albums, like Music For Airports. Perhaps the biggest thing missing on Contrappunti is the conceptual flow you find on Felona, so it ends up sounding a little disjointed. But still the same, Contrappunti is a worthwhile album to get, but you are much better off starting with Felona e Sorona, before you come to this one.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful change of direction for this Italian prog band.......2006-05-28

At the time of the release of this album (1979), a lot of prog bands had either packed it in, or had shifted to a style that emphasized jazz rock, British symphonic pop, or American arena rock. Not Le Orme however - they opted for a change in direction that emphasized folk and classical styles.

This album is really interesting in that while Le Orme had simplified their style like a lot of the prog giants, they made a dramatic shift in direction by scoring their pieces solely for acoustic instruments. Specifically, Aldo Tagliapietra now played cello and classical guitar (in addition to his vocal parts), Antonio Pagliuca played acoustic piano, harpsichord, and the harmonium (a reed keyboard instrument), drummer Giuseppe dei Rossi had abandoned the drum kit and played a host of percussion instruments including vibraphone, marimba, and the glockenspiel, while guitarist Germano Serafin played violin, acoustic guitar, buzuky, and the mandolin.

The result of the dramatic change in instrumentation is a highly melodic and peaceful album of acoustic music that is rich in melody and acoustic textures. The percussion instruments really add quite a lot and I actually find it preferable to a full drum kit at times.

All in all, this is an excellent album that presents a pleasant change of direction for a prog band in the late 1970s. Highly recommended along with Uomo di pezza (1972), Felona e Serona (1973), Contrapuntti (1974), and Storia O Leggenda (1977). For those of you that like the acoustic direction, they would continue this approach on Piccola Rapsodia Dell'Ape (1980).

4 out of 5 stars A tasteful different work, with diverse moods!!.......2003-06-20

Well this album is absolutely underrated and often unknown as well...it is worth "4 stars and an half" at least. That is it's partially an unplugged tasteful album with a Medieval mood, which is absolutely inspiring, but also with symphonic breaks through, making this album well worth checking out!!Besides this is another hidden gem, which seems perfect to be performed in a theater (along with "Contrappunti")...even though "Contrappunti", unlike this "Florian", is closer to some albums by ELP and completely different. In fact this is a strange album in comparison to their standard; but otherwise another underrated work -"Di Terra"- by "Banco del Mutuo Soccorso" was different in comparison to their usual mood, an imprinting by Di Giacomo&C., and some critics regarded this issue as a failed attempt to innovate their style...the same destiny which coupled Banco to Le Orme.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful !.......2001-12-09

For moments mediaeval, at times renaissance, even it resembles the best neoclassical 18th century period ... this album merges classical music wit symphonic rock in a perfectly smooth blending. I totally agree with that reviewer who emphasized this band has the enormous merit of releasing such an album during the middle of the post-punk to techo transition, just in the late 70s. This fact, in my opinion, is a high merit for the musicians who did not worry about the path rock music was taking at that moment, but kept the inspiration and spirit they had in earlier compositions, except for they put an acoustic aura on them. Lyrics in italian give this acoustic record an almost perfect atmosphere. PFM lovers, just go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific change in direction........2001-01-04

Unlike previous efforts this recording is an all-acoustic effort. This was rather a brave endeavor given the time of it's recording (1979). The world was turning it's collective ear to punk and new wave and acoustic recordings were decidedly unpopular. It's a shame as this disc ranks among Le Orme's finest efforts. This and the follow up Piccola Rapsodia Dell'Ape, also an acoustic effort, are highly recommended...Simon

5 out of 5 stars The original "unplugged" recording.......1999-07-28

Actually, it's tied with "Old School Songs", also from 1979 or so, when Dave Cousins of The Strawbs re-recorded a bunch of his electric songs from the early '70's with just acoustic guitar. "Florian" was far more ambitious than that. The 4 guys -- Aldo, Toni, Michi, and Germano -- took two years off. When they came back, they had left the electric guitars/bass/drums/keyboards/voice combination behind. They returned with, and I'm quoting from the CD, Aldo: violoncello, chitarra classica, voce; Antonio: piano, clavicembalo, armonium; Giuseppe: vibrafono, marimba, glockenspiel, percussioni; Germano: violino, chitarra acustica, buzuky, mandola. Entirely acoustic! (I'll let you translate the Italian on your own; it's good for you.) Note that Toni and Michi switched to their baptismal names in keeping with their classy new instruments. In the hands of lesser talents, this move would have been pretentious and an embarrassment. But the members of Le Orme, being almost godlike in their brilliance, produced one of their greatest and most moving records. It's been a favourite of mine since I received the LP as a birthday present in 1980. Standout tracks for me are "Calipso" and "Fine di un viaggio" (i.e. End of a Journey). The other Orme albums in the first rank, and not in any particular order, are: Uomo di pezza, Contrappunti, and Felona e Sorona (not the English language version, Felona & Sorona, with lyrics by Peter Hammill of Van Der Graaf). The group also gave quite a good accounting of themselves in their 1996 release, "Il fiume", even without the help of Toni and Germano. Aldo is still in very good voice. Orme have been recording since the late '60's, and any single one of their records is superior to the entire output from another famous group from England who have been recording somewhat longer. At least I think so anyway. For the record, my other favourite Italian band is Banco (del mutuo soccorso). Other notable Italian records include Il rovescio della medaglia's Contaminazione (di alcune idee di certi preludi e fughe ...); the first two PFMs, Storia di un minuto and Per un amico; Semiramis; Il balletto di bronzo's Ys; there are in fact too many to mention. Le Orme played what I believe to be their first Canadian gig ever last summer in Quebec City. If our little company hadn't gone out of business that same week, I would have been up there like a rocket. If I know any Italian at all now, it's from years of listening to The Orme. Grazie mille, ragazzi! Oh, I nearly forgot. What does the title of this recording mean? I guess it's obvious to Italians, but not to the rest of us. It's the name of a very chic and quite expensive café on the Piazza San Marco in Venice, steps away from the famous basilica and campanile. Old copies of the LP, but not LP reissues or the CD, include a photo of the band at the café with their instruments, looking like the houseband getting ready to play.

5 out of 5 stars Storia O Leggenda.......2005-08-12

I agree with the first review comment and again certain Italian rock musicians are progressive without cajoling music as an experiment which is what I think a lot of it ended up in the late sixties and seventies. It's about time that we all determine what should be classified as masterpieces in years to come as historians have done with classical music. For example Fabrizio de Andre's songs and music should be classified as masterpieces and dare anyone oppose them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful prog pop from this great Italian Prog band.......2003-03-14

Le Orme always had a well-developed sense of melody and the ability to string shorter ideas together into a cohesive whole (i.e., Felona e Serona). However, whereas earlier songs (sometimes) seemed like undeveloped fragments, on Storia o Leggenda, the shorter pieces stand on their own. This is a wonderful recording that has all of the classical posturing, analog synthesizers, rhythmic complexity, and the melodrama of their earlier works yet presented in a much more stripped down manner and is somewhat more mature sounding. One does not need to understand Italian to appreciate this disc. An absolute must for Le Orme fans and fans of Italian progressive rock.

4 out of 5 stars Solid effort........2001-01-04

Storia O Leggenda is far better than either Smogmagica or Verita Nascoste the recordings that preceded and followed this effort. Where Le Orme was still wrestling with modifying their sound, the efforts here are much more consistent in both composition and production. Less poppy more progressive. A fine effort.Recommended...Simon

3 out of 5 stars A Spaghetti Western.......2006-06-03

I agree with the other reviewer. This album was released in 1975-1976 time frame in Europe, just after the English Progressive Pop group 10cc had had a string of hits in the English-speaking world ("Lie is a Minestrone", "Rubber Bullets", etc.) topping off with a huge global mega-hit, "I'm Not In Love" which I think went top 5 in almost every country that had Rock radio, and was Number #1 in the US, UK and probably W. Europe; after which the style of those 10cc singles became a fashionable International Mode for Pop Music (imitators like Pilot started appearing) and even Orme, usually had been a resaonably advancing Prog group, took a diversion here with all these songs that sound like 10cc translation. Orme resumed their former course next year with a great record, and continues until they were quite magnificent by decades end- stripping away the electric instruments and adopting acoustic instruments with amplifiers. If you are looking for great music by guys who got into rock via lessons in Albinoni, et al, stay away from this one. Get instead their Stlorio o Legenda, Florien, and the one with the Bee on the Flower on the cover.

3 out of 5 stars mixed bag.......2001-01-28

This mid-seventies recording is one of Le Orme's weaker recordings. Where half of the disc is really quite good, the other half gives way to poppy production and compositions. A shame really as this brilliant prog outfit still had a lot to say (see later 70's recordings). This one is not essential...Simon
