5 out of 5 stars Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13

If you favor blend, balance, pitch, and all the other parameters of the English traditional choral style, you'll be very impressed with the Tallis Scholars' refined presentation. the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27

In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John Dunstable and William Byrd. I personally consider him the second-greatest Renaissance composer after Palestrina, but I'm not dogmatic about it. I love the music of Josquin, Victoria, and Byrd almost as much. Let's just say that, if you're interested in immersing yourself in the work of a single Renaissance composer, you can't do much better than Tallis.

These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.

The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-01-22

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-01-04

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

5 out of 5 stars It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

4 out of 5 stars very relaxing, soothing, and comforting music.......2001-07-22

this is a really good CD...i can listen to it over and over...the sound is very smooth...and well blended...you will enjoy it!

    5 out of 5 stars A Treat Inside Out.......2001-05-06

I am usually a voice-oriented music listener and for that reason it is a huge surprise how much I loved this instrumental album! Everything about this gentle CD is a treat. I wish there were a picture here of the cover, because it is worthy of being framed. First your disc arrives, and you see this beautiful painting on the front. Then you tear off the plastic and open it, to find that the disc itself also has a beautiful painting on it. It feels like a birthday present! Then you stick it in your CD player, and the most lovely sound comes out.

Gentle instruments play instrumental melodies that even those of us who normally prefer lyrics can really get into. It is one happy, gentle, strangely familiar tune after another. It absolutely transforms the atmosphere of your house into a happy, magical place, full of gentle cheer.

When the lovely album is over, you just want to slip it carefully back into all that beautiful packaging, give it a kiss and place it carefully on a prominent place on your CD shelf for everyone to see. It's the sort of album that will never wear out or grow old. You'll want to pass it on to your grandchildren!

5 out of 5 stars So O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L .. There is absolutely no categorizing this music.......2007-03-28

I would like to start out by saying i am so grateful that this man (who rearranged the letters in his name (Adam Pierce) to spell out "mice parade" .. pretty accurate description if you ask me) remains a hidden gem. People who don't appreciate music from where it's supposed to come from should never EVER have the "misfortune" of listening to the flat out RAW originality and innovation that this album possesses.

As i'm listening to "the days before fiction" (irony? think about it) i am really trying to figure out what to say. the beginning is truly sublime, and the song itself explores so much musical territory that it would almost be a crime not let it all soak in. the drum patterns displayed are simply remarkable, and some of the time signatures are unmatched by anything i've ever heard. It's obvious this guy is IN-LOVE with music, and the end just transcends really the essence of what music is about. In no way shape or form am i exaggerating this; and if you haven't gotten it yet, either let it sink in or put the album down and never touch it again .. because you really don't deserve that pair of headphones.

"Waterslide" continues this idea of actually making music for music's sake when you take into account the constantly shifting time signatures and drum patterns. Here he is essentially hypnotizing you and forcing you to listen to the vast number of sounds created. There is so much going on sometimes that it becomes O-V-E-R-W-H-E-L-M-I-N-G (believe that) to the casual listener who most likely is looking to hear something immediately inviting. Yeah sorry, this requires some well deserved attention. Jay-Z said it best i must admit .. "Do Ya'll fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?"

at about the 2:40 mark of "ground as cold as common" there is yet another drum beat void of any comparisons to anything that's being put out today. An undoubtedly spacey hypnotic tune that just sort of goes where it's meant to, without being pretentious or contrived. It all feels completely natural, and no one sequence of his music ever wears out it's welcome because there is always something new within the song that never ceases to amaze.

one of the only comparisons i can make that becomes apparent is on "steady as she goes" where the opening drum sequence and feel of the song reminds me a bit of tortoise (TNT?) with their unique and abstract approach to creating music. Only unlike most of tortoises musical output, these songs actually go somewhere, and feel complete by the time it's all over.

That being said, At times adam pierce's music is reminiscent of aphex twin without relying on as much electronic sound, (drums for example) or artists like caribou, manitoba (before they were called caribou), tortoise etc ... but what sets him apart from the rest is the fact that he's bringing something new to the table, something fresh and unique, while at the same time maintaining that vision of how H-I-S music should sound.. without getting caught up in what everyone else is doing. He is single-handedly inventing his own genre while at the same time resurrecting music ... and quite frankly, it feels incredible.

    5 out of 5 stars Softly Inventive.......2006-02-26

I think this album (in all its softness and quirkyness) is among the best released in 2005. It gracefully blends unusal drumming and pop undertones into something which is approchable. Even then, there are bits of noise and randomness which contribute to make the album feel slightly different each time I listen to it.

    4 out of 5 stars tripfest.......2005-07-24

a rather trippy and soothing piece of music that spirals its way into your aural labyrinths. It's whimsical, jazzy and projects a fresh and unique sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazingly comforting..........2005-06-15

Bem-Vinda Vontade is an amazing piece of work. The intrumentation is classic Adam Pierce. To put a cherry on top of a already delicious musical dish lyrics have been sprinkled where necessary. I highly recommend picking this one up!

[...] I, too, thought this was a compilation of "Various Artists" and it reminded me of one of those "Kidz Bop" CDs. It may has well have been little children singing the songs.

I would like to suggest, actually beg, AMAZON to make sure they have a disclaimer, in bold red letters at the top of the page, indicating that the CD may not be what one expects. I certainly did not and was extremely disapointed.

I am now responsible for returning this item, for which I will not receive a refund on the shipping costs.

So, buyers BEWARE....this CD is a complete waste of money.

    Bad mistake.
This CD is comprised entirely of re-recorded cover versions of these old songs and it sounds like the same band on every song. The CD jacket reads " all newly recorded digitally mastered music featuring The Hit Crew".

    Album Description

Burst The Bubble is The Company of Snakes' successful attempt to come up with an album that forges a link with unforgettable Whitesnake recordings like `Ready And Willin' or `Lovehunter'. With their timeless hard rock Made in Britain that is based on blues, boogie and traditional rock influences, The Company Of Snakes reduce possible arguments about trends and fashions to absurdity, while proving that there will always be an audience for their brand of classic rock.

Like they did during the glorious Seventies and Eighties, Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden have once again proved that they not only continue to rank among the best rock guitarists of the scene, they are also among the most distinctive and tasteful composers of their genre. Songs like the opener `Labour of Love', the melodic `Sacrificial Feeling', `Little Miss Happiness' with its good-time rock'n'roll attitude, `Back To The Blues' (which really doesn't require further explanation), or the ballad `Those Days' bear the unmistakable mark of the two experienced musicians and songwriters. Moody and Marsden are supported by brilliant instrumentalists, among which particularly vocalist Stefan Berggren stands out with his bluesy, clear timbre. Berggren's voice and vocal style follow in the footsteps of David Coverdale or Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), without ever copying these rock legends.

Burst The Bubble was produced by Nikolo Kotzev, producer, songwriter, and guitarist with acts like Baltimore, Brazen Abbot or Nostradamus and engineer/producer of the current Saxon release Killing Ground.

    Album Description

2002 album successfully forges a link with unforgettable Whitesnake recordings like 'Ready & Willin' & 'Lovehunter'. Tracks include the tour tested 'Kinda Wish You Would'.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Marsden, Moody & Murray are back.......2003-02-07

The core of Company Of Snakes is the two former members of Whitesnake's best line up (Bernie Marsden & Mickey Moody). When they first formed the band they hired a "Coverdale-sound-alike" singer and simply called the band The Snakes. That line up released one album titled "Once bitten..." and it sounded so similar to (early) Whitesnake that some people actually were fooled to believe it was Whitesnake! After some internal problems the singer got fired, and ex Bad Company vocalist Robert Hart joined the band and the name was changed to Company Of Snakes (an obvious reference to Bad Company & Whitesnake). Robert Hart didn't stay so Marsden and Moody recruited an unknown singer from Sweden - Stefan Berggren, and the well known bass player Neil Murray, who also was a member of the classic Whitesnake line up.

"Burst the bubble" is a good album although it contains too many songs, which has a tendency to draw attention away from the real highlights. If they cut down the number of tracks, to say 10 songs, it would be a much more solid effort.

Some of the songs are in fact re-recordings of tunes from their debut album ("Once bitten..."). I'm sorry to say, but the great "Little miss happiness" were even better in the original version when it was slightly faster and groovier, but it's still one of the best songs. Other outstanding tracks are:

"Labour of love", a bluesy rocker with the same excellent vocal arrangements we got used to listening to David Coverdale back in the mid 1970's.

"Ride, ride, ride" with its obvious similarity to "Outlaw" from Whitesnake's album "Lovehunter".

"What love can do" sounds very much like more recent Whitesnake ballads like "The deeper the love" - a bit soft but still good.

"Back to the blues" - like the title implies it's a blues based rock song, better than the average.

I like the fact that Berggren keep his singing rather low, and not try to impress us with the "high pitch screams" some other vocalists seem to think is the main task of being a rock singer. If you sit around complaining about the current state of music and wonder where all the good times have gone, I think this album would be of interest. It's not as good as Whitesnake's "Love hunter" and "Ready an' willing" but it's the closest thing to the original at this time.

4 out of 5 stars Truly a labor of love!.......2002-02-15

Featuring the two 'snakes' Bernie Marsden and Mickey Moody, plus legendary Neil Murray and John Lingwood, this Company delivers, aided by the strong and inspired vocals of one Swedish Stefan Berggren. This is a beautiful and long awaited album full of nostalgia and also new blood;for the die-hard Whitesnake/Coverdale fans this album is a special treat:full on smokey blues and rock'n'roll that stands proudly aside "Ready and Willing".

5 out of 5 stars THIS GET'S 5 STARS JUST FOR BEING DIFFERENT..........2002-02-07

... than all the "modern" band's.
The Company Of Snakes take the Pre-1987 Whitesnake sound and run with it.After the mostly covers Double CD "Here They Go Again" this CD is all new material.I knew pretty much what I was going to be getting before the CD arrived all except for one thing - Stefan Berggren's vocals!!! He sounds like David Coverdale but He does not sound like He is 'trying" to sound like Him.Nice to know there's younger singers out there who can sing like this! I see a bright future for Him! Bottom line, this is bluesy soulfelt hard rock that would be at home in the late 70's/early 80's and right at home in My CD player!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Sugar Cream.......2007-07-02

Wendy Colonna's "Right Where I Belong" is a strong set. Fans of Bonnie Raitt's soulful blues-flavored sound will find a new friend. The title track is a catchy midtempo charmer with a sweet melody and a darker tone in the lyric, "Chasing your tail, you know they tell you success is just a few hard breaks away, heartache to heartache, I ain't feeling like I'm healing & I know there's a better way." Wayne Sutton's guitar on "Sail On" squeezes the juice out of his electric guitar as Wendy's wistful vocals float effortlessly to produce an excellent sound. "Coffee Today" is a sad ballad of remembrance, "Tangled hair & jaded dreams, water spoons & sugar creams, you woke me up & now I seem asleep today." "October" aches softly with Wendy's lovely refrain, "Would you come back home?" The CD ends on a high note with "Nothin Gonna Take My Love" with Eldridge Goins sounding like he's beating out Indian war drums on Wendy's declaration of love. There are no weak tracks on the CD with some excellent gems to treasure. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-11-03

Wendy's third album is by far her best to date. Her song "Coffee Today" was fantastic on her second album "Red." She improved it tremendously for "Right Where I Belong." The new version is fuller and richer. This one song is reason enough to buy this album and the rest of the album will not disappoint you either. This CD is in my regular listening rotation. Everyone who has heard this CD has loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Sultry, sweet, salty, wonderful!.......2005-10-07

I'm deeply involved in music and have a huge collection to choose from, and yet here plucky l'il Wendy Colonna has actually made a CD that I listen to every day. The thing is, a lot of women can sing and write songs, but Wendy's got Something else, something that is so direct and touching, the true essence of soul, and there's nothing in between it and her music. I don't just love this album and her singing, I truly respect its songwriting. Wendy is real. She's not packaged, and there's everything from the soul-filling defiance of the blues-based Nothing's Going To Take My Love, to the musing wistful sweetness of May Day, all expressed in her amazing sultry, soulful, exuberant voice and the inspired musical arrangements of her highly talented band. No whining, here- just great, highly original soul/roots/rock/funk. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Beautiful.......2005-09-27

Wonderful, Beautiful, and Talented can only describe Wendy Colonna. Right Where I Belong is a wonderful album that you can listen to over and over. Thank you Wendy for such beautiful music.

    5 out of 5 stars wow...just wow.......2005-09-19

I don't know how Wendy manages to be simultaneously so dark and brooding and yet so hopeful and inspiring. She sings with an achingly beautiful voice that makes sorrow as sultry and inviting as joy.

That doesn't mean its a downer - it walks that line of setting a haunting mood without wallowing in it. It's a rainy-day/long- drive/late-night-while-drinking-alone-in-a-dark-room album that never goes to far - for every equisite expression of pain (Vacancy, October) there's an equally powerful expression of recovery and triumph - the you-f***ed up a good thing attitude of Mayday, the glass-half-full argument of Easy, the thankful prayer of empowerment that is Nothing Going to Take My Love, and the self-explanatory title track, Right Where I Belong)

This isn't the self-indulgent friend you avoid while she goes through her painful breakup because she's going to wallow in self-pity, this is the self-aware friend you want to drink with while she goes through her painful breakup because you know she's going to wallow in self-discovery, and if you listen close you know you'll learn something...

5 out of 5 stars The best band you never heard of.......2003-07-09

I have owned three copies of this album, dating back to my junior year in high school (1988). The Tarbabies were a raw white-boy punk/funk trio from Wisconsin who should have become stars along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their pocket is DEEP - they have a great feel, but they also aren't afraid to turn up the heat and blast away with the best of them. The lyrics are kinda warped, too, alternating between curious, hilarious, and inspired. "I went out lookin' for true love/Turned around and I had three of 'em" - "Joyride" Totally groovy.
