Great collection.......2007-07-08
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band's 1997 release "Marching Down Bourbon Street" is actually a compilation of tracks from their "New Orleans, Volume..." albums released between the 1970s and 1990s. As most of those albums are now out of print, this is a great buy, especially at such a good price. Anyone who's ever been to Preservation Hall knows what a great show they put on, and they sound just as tight on record. The compilation includes their best known standards like "St. James Infirmary" and "The Bucket's Got a Hole in It," and of course "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Amen," as well as technical masterpieces like "Hindustan" and "St. Louis Blues." A great purchase, highly recommended, this is fine New Orleans jazz!
Classic New Orleans.......2001-06-25
Anyone who has visited Preservation Hall in New Orleans will truly appreciate this CD as it captures the feeling of that great joyful and music-filled room. To those who have not been blessed with that experience, this CD will certainly whet your appetite for Dixieland. I have been a fan of New Orleans Jazz for over 50 years and never tire of listening to the old standards featured here. St. James Infirmary is one of my all-time favorites and is particulary good here. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is one of the most important groups preserving and promoting this kind of music. This is also a super value and offers a good way to sample this music.

Not so good.......2007-03-01
I have all the Jason Boland albums, and I am a huge fan. He is by far one of my favorites. However the Bourbon Legend, isnt his best work. It doesnt have the feel the rest of the albums have. I was very disappointed and sold it back after a week of owning it. However I would recommend any of the other albums, he is wonderful live!!
Country Music On A Bender!!.......2007-01-10
Jason Boland and the Stragglers are straight bourbon compared to the watered down country coming out of Nashville. They are outlaws and the sound is raw but pure. Reminiscient of the great one, Waylon, these guys consider fiddles and steels to be essential country instruments. Buy this album but then buy all of their albums. You'll love them all.
Real Country Still Lives !.......2007-01-03
If you are a Waylon Jennings fan, then this CD is a must! If you aren't familiar with Jason, you're in for a treat. Jason has a voice made to sing country and it comes through with true emotion in these songs, all of which he wrote. No big rockers here, just real country music with great tunes and lyrics. You won't have to skip through any "filler" songs, they are all good! Get This!
Whoops Jason.......2006-12-19
This album is not worth your time. Every song has the same theme as far as the "music" goes. Bourbon Legend is a great song but this CD does not compare to Live at Billy Bob's Texas. I was very dissapointed after listening to this album once and immediately sold it back to Amazon. He should stay away from the studio and do what he does best. BE IN THE BAR!!!!!!!
jason still rocks!!!.......2006-11-01
Jason boland is the godfather of the red dirt movement. He is the finest songwriter ever to come from the great state of Oklahoma, and he is certainly better than anything coming out of texas. "The Bourbon Legend" does not dissapoint, and I have to say it may be his best album so far. Thank you Jason and the Stragglers. KEEP SPREADIN' THE DIRT!!!!

Unbelievable.......2006-12-27
Acording to the book "one long tune" very fev of lennys albums vere Lenny in good form. Often he had not the nervs to play in studio, or he was on drugs. This was the case on Five O'Clock Bells/Mo' Breau and Cabin Fever, although these albums are greate. But on this album, Lenny is at his very best.
Lennys goal was to play the guitar like the piano, and Bill Evans was his favorit piano player. He worked on this for 20 years. He sure made it.'
Dave Young knew and respethed Lenny and his music, and the result is marvelus.
On this album Lenny plays just the way he feels like, totally free.
The thing with his playing that make me call it unbelivable, is his harmonich, the way he plays like a piano player, and he does it totally spontanius. If You Could See Me Now, My Foolish Heart, I Fall In Love To Easily, Two Lonely People, are just increddible.
This is the best electric guitarwork I have ever heard, and the more you lissen, the more you hear.
The sound is greate and the interplay vith Dave Young is unncanny.
Two of the Best at Their Best.......2005-01-27
What a beautiful set of immaculate improvisations! God, the sound is so good! Usually upright bass is recorded live so that it brings out all the finger noise. Not so here. So clean, so sweet.
If you are not familiar with Lenny Breau, what a treat these 2 CD's can be for you. Here using a great sounding custom 7 string guitar with a high 'A' string! Considered by the best of the jazz and country worlds to be the best living guitarist in his lifetime, he lives up to his reputation here. I have everything I can get that Lenny did, and this is my favorite alongside "The Complete Livingroom Tapes." He had incredible technique and prowess, truly killer chops. On this recording he has deepened and grown beyond anything purely physical or technical about music on a guitar. He comunicates with heartfelt passion and soul, so fully, so clearly, so cleanly, and so...transcendently. It's hard to believe how beautiful this music is. God, I love it! Please invite Lenny to live on in your life and ears, too.
Definitive Jazz Guitar.......2002-06-10
If you are looking for incredibley smooth and innovative jazz guitar this is the one. Lenny's fingerstyle technic gave him the ability to take jazz and pop standards way beyond the 'flat picking' style of playing, very much like listening to a jazz pianist. Along with long time associate Dave Young on acoustic bass this music presents an interplay between guitar and bass that is rarley heard. A 'must have' for Lenny Breau fans and jazz fans in general.
It doesn't get any better than this..........2001-10-23
To any fan of jazz and anyone who plays guitar in general, this album is a must have. Breau's playing on great standards is just unbelievable and there is much to be learned from his style. A highly under rated player who deserves more credit. Regardless, he burns on this cd and it should be owned by all.

The North Indian Bhatt stretches in a different direction for this collaboration with country/bluegrass dobro virtuoso Douglas and bassist Meyer, Douglas's frequent partner in Nashville. Both the dobro and the upright bass employ sliding tones, of course, and are quite compatible with Bhatt's mohan vina. All but one of the eight tunes on this all-instrumental album were written by one or more of the three musicians, and they come up with lovely, shimmering, legato lines. Instead of the earthy qualities elicited by Mahal's blues, Douglas and Meyer bring out the yearning and melodic qualities of Bhatt's playing with the result that this is Bhatt's most tuneful and accessible project yet. --Geoffrey Himes

One of the best "East meets West" instrumental musics.......2002-07-19
This is truly one of the best 'world' fusions I have ever heard!
One can always wonder how such a mixture is possible: blue grass and hindustani music and it works!
I highly recommend this wonderful work.
balak.......2000-11-17
One of my favourites on long drives. This has the right mix of indian classical(hindustani) and the down south-blues styles. They complement each other with surprising fluidity. Perhaps, I expected too much from the acoustics. But, they are refreshingly clear and smooth notes of all the stringed instruments can be *felt* sliding down into your heart. By far, one of the best from guitar-based fusion stuff.

As if practicing one's fingertips to the bone isn't punishment enough, some young violinists in today's glutted market are now having to put in long hours each day blow-drying their hair; Leila Josefowicz displays several dos in the book that comes with this CD. The performances, mostly of showpieces by Ysaye, Tchaikovsky, Bizet, and the like, are clean but shallow (not that these pieces are terribly deep to begin with). The first and last cuts are pop tunes: Sting's "Moon Over Bourbon Street" and Robert Sadin's "Crescent Moon"--music sure to soon be piped into an underwear store near you. Anne Rice was evidently preoccupied with Josefowicz during the writing of her novel Violin and the two became friends, hence the title of the disc. -- Jennifer Loflin
Customer Reviews:
The Age of the Info-Critic.......2006-02-25
Most critics are a self-doubting bunch and some review books, CDs or restaurants without benefit of first-hand experience. Or, as is the case here, they introduce unrelated material in order to bolster their pre-set opinion. This is a stunning CD, deeply romantic and satisfying. Yes, it is parochial and one whose origins are the stuff of fiction but does that invalidate the virtuosity and lushness? I enjoyed the music immensely even though I stopped reading the Vampire series after the second book. At times the music soars and I too have thought of "old" New Orleans many times while listening to this recording. Rush out and buy it now!
Heavenly Violin, Lovely Performance!.......2005-06-30
The world is full of self appointed, self glorifying CRITICS in all fields of human endeavour. They sit in their imaginary lofty perches to look down on and lash out at those under their scrutiny with disdain, contempt, insults and envy even. Maybe they do so to `paint' a certain veneer of credibility, profundity and `gravitas' over their opinions. Or maybe because critics are more often than not, LESS talented, gifted, well-known, well-liked and well-endowed physically than those they criticised. Instead of providing useful information, constructive criticisms, enlightening perspectives or deep insights into musical performances and recordings, we get brief, superficial, meaningless comments on what is but personal and normal i.e. hairdos. The great works by Tchaikovsky and other renowned composers, works that are beloved by many and have been similarly performed by famous violinists like Anne Sophie Mutter, David Oistrakh, etc, have been simply and derisively brushed aside as "not terribly deep". I wonder who really is superficial!
Anyway, I see no book nor am I interested in what's in it. I am interested however in Ms Josefowicz CDs, which I came across whilst browsing for more performances of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto which is one of my favourites. I was attracted enough to want to buy but was apprehensive because I was not familiar with the musician and could not audition the CD where it was available. After doing a bit of research on the Internet, I took the risk to buy this CD. I understand that the violin used by Ms Josefowicz was a Guarneri and I have never heard one before (all recordings I owned are Stradivarus - I think!?). So I felt I MUST listen to this! I was not disappointed and was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the performance instead. As a `nit picking' audiophile, I find the recording quality excellent. The performances were relaxed but nonetheless, lively and emotionally engaging. The sound of the violin was heavenly - tonally rich and full. Ms Josefowicz performances may not be at the level of the "old masters" or the "famously great" - but this does not make them any less musically satisfying and enjoyable to ordinary music lovers like me. The CD now takes its place of pride among my other revered older recordings, to provide a different, fresh and interesting take on a great piece of musical work. I personally feel that Ms Josefowicz has it in her to be among the first and best, if she ignore ignorant critics and if she focus on the classical music repertoire, avoiding the modern cross-over type of music like those two out-of-place pieces found here on this CD. Leave these to violinists like Vanessa May!
So to all my fellow music lovers, do give this a try; you may find yourself falling in love with it like I did...
Outstanding.......2004-07-12
This is the first Classical collection I have ever bought and I will not lie. I bought it because it had something to do with Anne Rice. But when I started to listen to it, I was blown away. Leila has amazing talent and she is just so good. Brava.
It's been established she can play the Tchaikovsky............2000-06-18
Don't get me wrong when I say that, she is very talented, but she all ready made a recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. There were a few new things on this CD which she was great at, but those two other tracks, one at the beginning, one at the end, were very annoying. They aren't classical! If she wants to do stuff with jazz, then she should make an individual CD for it. Overall, she displayed her talent, but most of that CD was a waste for me.
She can play in tempo........1999-06-04
Just the other day heard a piece by Sarasate performed by Ms. Josefowicz. She DID play it in tempo, throughout. ("Tempo is the most important part of music", Mozart--quoted from memory, possibly inexactly.) Now, whether it be Mozart, or Sarasate or other lesser ones, if not played in tempo they would better be left alone. That remark applies to the bulk of what is nowadays produced in the classical field, Ms. Josefowicz being one of the FEW noble exceptions. The review by a professional (?) critic as printed above is just fiddlesticks--I mean, it is a bunch of baloney and misses the point completely. Though I have not heard the whole album, I think it presumably correct to expect that if Ms.Josefowicz could play one thing in tempo, she would be able to play other things in tempo too. And, again, anything played otherwise should not have been played at all. Karajan has uttered some pointed remarks on the subject just as well. Ms. Josefowicz does fulfill the very first requirement there is of music. She is one of the rarities.I am shocked and offended (alas, not the first time) by a critic sicked on an innocent and excellent artist. Thanks to the Internet though, the era of the Crrrtc Almighty may be nearing its end, and I sincerely hope for just that. That the cited reviewer might simply be ugly-looking is the most likely explanation after all. Oh, well, maybe it is just one of those deep-in-thought cases.

A Perfect Album in every way.......2002-04-01
I own all of Michael Mcdermott's albums and, while I greatly enjoy his first three efforts, I believe this is the first one that could be called a perfect album. It seems to me in 620 W. Surf, Gethsemane, and Michael Mcdermott, he was perfecting his craft. In Bourbon Blue, there is not one song that is not perfect; there is not one out of place line or note as occasionally surfaced on the first three albums. I would recommend this album to anyone who appreciates the singer-songwriter genre. Michael Mcdermott can write slow introspective songs one moment (as on Murder on her lips, my sweet rapier, lady jack of irons) and rock out the next (20 miles south of nowhere, jezebel, junkie girl). His songs are always meaningful and his verses quite poetic.
A very good album.......2000-08-22
This is singer/songwriter music with some kick. Deeply personal songs that introduce us to a range of characters, misfits if you will, but nevertheless draw us in. Surrounding these engrossing lyrics is a wide variety of music, from Wallflower-esque rock to beautiful piano solos to Irish folk songs. This is a talented guy and this is a very good album.
Bourbon Blue.......2000-06-13
This albumn quickly became one of my most listened to albumns. The songs have become familiar, and beg to be heard over and over again. From the catchy 'Twenty Miles South of Nowhere'; the deeply-piercing 'Murder On Her Lips' and 'Rythem Of The River'; the haunting 'Bourbon Blue', this is a quality albumn.
The albumns of Michael McDermott have always been great to listen to. They're never over-produced, always introspective. Unlike much of the music produced today, McDermott's music always comes across as personal, 'me-singing -to-you', with authentic feeling.
Not Kitchy Pop.......1999-12-30
I've been listening to Michael McDermott's music for about six years now. This is Michael's fourth record, and this time he produced it himself without the help of a major label. "Bourbon Blue" is by far his greatest record to date. This is not some throw away pop album or forgettable rock record. "Bourbon Blue" is full of introspective lyrics that detail emotions we all trudge through, and paint pictures of characters we have run across or have been. Michael has been compared to Springsteen, Dylan and others in the genre, but his music is a rare gem these days in the world of pop/rock. Get this album, check out www.myklmcdermott.com to learn more and catch him in the Chicago area whenever he plays a gig.
A shame this guy has gone undiscovered by the masses.......1999-12-17
Michael McDermott is an artist whose incredible talent is going undiscovered. An amazing songwriter, as illustrated on such songs as "Murder on her Lips", "Lady Jack of Irons", and the hidden track "Bourbon Blue", Michael weaves in and out of people's lives like none other. Emotionally charged lyrics, coupled with in depth stories about those people who surround him both in the past as well as in the present, McDermott is a treasure, going unnoticed in these times of average talent and one hit wonders. McDermott's entire discography is one for the ages.

Album Description
Bourbon Princess is a band of four exceptional musicians making beautiful, dark-edged, highly original music featuring the lyrical songwriting of singer/bassist Monique Ortiz. With the release of Bourbon Princess' new Dark of Days and the band's upcoming tours, bigger audiences are bound to fall under the spell of this group's mesmerizing sound! The unique sound of Bourbon Princess is like new wave with a sophisticated, heady, soulful bite. Ortiz crafts the approach from the warm, flexible tones of her contralto voice and the deep sonorities of her versatile bass playing, along with the help of her talented co-conspirators: original Morphine drummer Jerome Deupree, Either/Orchestra saxophonist/leader Russ Gershon and guitarist/pianist Jim Moran. First full-length collaboration with Paul Q. Kolderie (producer/engineer for Radiohead, Hole, Morphine), who manned the console.
Customer Reviews:
Audio noir.......2005-05-16
Casting a sonic spell that's spooky, hypnotic, and often nightmarish, Bourbon Princess mixes droning bass, world-weary tenor saxophone, jazzy percussion, and washes of textural guitar into a startlingly original ensemble sound. Fronted by bassist and vocalist Monique Ortiz, and powered by Morphine's original drummer, Jerome Deupree -- whose tom-rich rhythms evoke vintage Velvet Underground -- the band specializes in mysterious, rumbling grooves. Saxist Russ Gershon wraps his lines around Ortiz's husky alto voice like an anguished lover, while guitarist Jim Moran artfully fills the cracks with subtle, liquid colors. Ortiz writes about the intoxicated, seamy side of life in such frank, unflinching detail that some listeners may miss the telepathic musical interplay that underpins her lyrics. Engineer Paul Q. Kolderie (Morphine, Hole, Radiohead, Warren Zevon) keeps the swirling sounds sharply focused. Fans of Tom Waits, Portishead, and Nick Cave will feel right at home.
Shot in the Darkness.......2005-04-25
I stumbled upon this band while ordering other cds and I am so glad I did! This LP gives me hope that there are still bands out there that actually write good songs and give a damn about creating a particular dynamic, rather than just following trends. Singer/bassist Monique Ortiz has such an expansive vocal range that one might think there was a man singing one song and a woman singing the next. The disc opens with a bluesy tune called "Still Asleep" with a raunchy vocal delivery that is eerily reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, then blasts right into "Waiting Noon", a dark, but super-funky ramble that makes me think of Nick Cave (circa Birthday Party) or Siousxie & The Banshees (think "Peepshow"). As the cd progresses the songs only get more intense and cinematic. The title track is an epic that would be right at home in a soundtrack of a war film or documentary on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. "Cliche", a ballad that comes from a woman struggling to get by, gave me chills. Let me not get too hung-up on the mystique of the frontwoman, when there are a handful of guys backing her up that deliver some devine performances too: Jim Moran, who I have never heard of until finding Bourbon Princess, is a guitarist that cleary looks at the big picture. Not over or under playing, his fluid, yet deliberate sound (think Hendrix meets Fripp) seems to cradle Monique's basslines, and opens-up the entire sound, especially on "the Hat". Although I think this record could've done with less saxaphone, the talents of Russ Gershon cannot be denied. Especially on the Mardis-Gras-esque closing track, "so much time". Perhaps original Morphine drummer Jerome Deupree has found his calling. I loved what he did with Morphine, but feel like this is some of the best playing I've ever heard from him, and his tom-heavy style couldn't be more perfect with Monique's swooping, drony basslines, and cutting lyrics. We all have records produced or engineered by Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Morphine, Hole)and you better be damn sure to add this one to the collection!
I only hope I get to catch them on tour someday.
Fans of Nick cave, PJ Harvey, Morphine and Prentenders will LOVE this!
