4 out of 5 stars Intriguing album bookended by two masterpieces..........2007-07-02

Kate Bush's mature little girl's voice hasn't resonated as much in the United States as in Europe or Britain. Nonetheless, word of mouth does wonders and her music has attained an American following despite mainstream neglect and less than stellar chart positions. The general mainstream dismissal of female intellectualism in the States probably hasn't helped. Sadly, a solid combination of brains and beauty, both of which Bush possesses in droves, can be a disadvantage across the pond. She also has a propensity towards the artistic, which erupts most in her modern dance music videos. Their acute angularity prompted American producers to shoot "American friendly" versions. Some things just don't import as well as the Fab Four.

By the release of "The Red Shoes" in 1993 Bush had scored a stateside hit with the tempestuous "Love and Anger." Though the new album chart-topped "The Sensual World" it nonetheless didn't make her a household name in America. Many fans, regardless of locale, consider the album one of her weaker efforts. Some critics attribute this to its trimmed down "live in the studio" feel. Supposedly Bush planned to take these songs on the road, which would have broken her "no tour since 1979" streak. She thus toned down the rocket science productions of her previous albums to facilitate live performances. Fans of her studio pyrotechnics grimaced. In the end, the tour didn't happen and "The Red Shoes" joined the ranks of Bush's impressive oeuvre with more of a thud than a splash. Over ten years would pass before her next incredible album, "Aerial."

"The Red Shoes" does pale somewhat in comparison to "The Sensual World," but not much. A few of the songs sound like carry-overs from that 1989 album. Carry-overs, not outtakes; that's a big difference. "The Song of Solomon" and "You're the One" hearken the return of the amazing Trio Bulgarka. The former song's bridge provides one of the album's most moving passages. Other huge standouts include the go-with-the-flow "Rubberband Girl" (complete with 'alternate' European and American videos), the heartbreaking "Moments of Pleasure," and the obsessively danceable title track. These easily stand amongst Bush's best songs. The rest of the album ranges from great to passable, with far more emphasis on the great side of the continuum. "Constellation of the Heart" remains somewhat of a head-scratcher and "Why Should I Love You?" would sound more appropriate on a Prince album (the real Prince Rogers Nelson sat in on this one, which explains the anomaly). But, apart from a few less than extraordinary moments, "The Red Shoes" contains enough great work to satisfy any Kate Bush fan.

5 out of 5 stars I don't know much about music but I know what I like.......2007-06-17

this is my favorte album of all time. maybe her other work is more musicly complex. well I'v lisened to "hounds of love" and I only liked one song "runing up that hill" I'm a incredbly verbal person and if I can not understand the lyricks I get very fustrated. I think the lyrics on "the red shoes" are magical in fact some of them are inspired by ceramoneal magic traditions and palmistry. I am wiccan and I find those images inspiering. if lyrics are irelivant to you you might want to skip this album and get another by her. of the albums I'v heard "hounds of love" and "arial" this is the most "pop" or "rock" like. alot of the songs make me want to dance.

4 out of 5 stars Could've been amazing.......2006-09-19

I don't give it five stars only because Constellation Of The Heart, Why Should I Love You and You're The One are inexcusable pieces of garbage that i don't know why she allowed them to be in the final cut of the album! The rest of the songs are good, others are brilliant, but she had a wonderful conceptual idea explained in the title song The Red Shoes and didn't do much to make it interesting. We all know she was going through hell at the time, but it usually helps to make great, stirring, mindblowing records! Still, it becomes better with each listening (except the ones i mentioned).

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Red Shoes .......2006-08-10

Of all the Kate Bush albums I currently own, this is my favorite. Rubberband Girl is a fantastic tribute to trying to be adaptable to life and changes which most of us don't do well and Kate apparently would like to do a better job of as well. My next favourite on this album is Eat the Music, with it's fantastic back up and endearing lyrics that encourage you to swallow your music just like the fruit of life it truly is. My biggest disappointment on this album is Big Stripey Lie, but is truly a Kate song as it discusses the way a lie weaves in and out of reality. Personally, I am not fond of the music with Big Stripey Lie, but others may love it.
Currently I am waking up in the morning to this album playing as my alarm clock and it encourages me on days that are grey.
If you don't have it, or haven't been exposed to Kate, this is my number one suggestion for you to purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Her only disappointing release.......2006-06-16

I am so accustomed to raving about Kate Bush's recordings that it really pains me to write this one. This CD, while not horrible, is very disappointing. It seems she got sick of making interesting, quirky music and decided to just make some money with this one. It is very commercial, ridiculously over-produced and just could not have come from her heart. If you are a fan, you already own this. If you are looking for an introduction to Kate's music, buy "Hounds of Love". That CD is her masterpiece; "Red Shoes" should be veiwed as an asterisk in her amazing career.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

3 out of 5 stars some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

5 out of 5 stars delightful fare for Paxton fans.......2002-05-04

Tom Paxton has provided the world a treasure-trove of entertaining and thought provoking songs over the span his career. An engaging performer quick to please his audience, my children and I fondly recall an encounter with Tom after a Christmas concert he gave in NYC some years ago. My pre-teenaged son at the time enjoyed 'Fred', one of Tom's songs recounting a relationship between a dog and a flea. The tone of the concert did not call for a performance of 'Fred'. Enjoyable as the concert was, my young son was slightly disappointed. Tom graciously took my son aside and there in the hallway, between greeting fans and signing autographs, sang a verse or two with him, giving him the thrill of his young life. In this new offering, the title song alone is worth the cost of the CD. I first heard Tom perform the song, 'Your Shoes, My Shoes', during a webcast concert from the Kennedy Center in Washington and, was delighted to come across this release. The balance of the collection will disappoint no one. Tom Paxton continues to stimulate our consciousness. Buy this CD. Play it and grow!

    Album Description

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's "The Red Shoes" of 1948 is simply one of the most extraordinary and important British films in cinema history. An exuberant, lavish, daring, technicolor epic that has influenced generations of filmmakers, artists, and aspiring ballerinas. Although made in the late forties, "The Red Shoes" is decades ahead of it¹s time. It is shown regularly on television and is regarded as the definitive film about the world of dance. Brian Easdale, who won an Oscar for his score, developed his sensuous, esoteric style whilst studying Indian music in Calcutta and was described by Powell as "the ideal collaborator". For Powell went on to create soundtracks for "The Small Back Room", "The Elusive Pimpernel", "Gone To Earth", "The Battle Of The River Plate", "Peeping Tom" and "Queens Guards".

      Album Description

Blood Red Shoes consist of two people, Laura-Mary, who wishes she were Spanish, and Steven who wishes he were French, only they both live in Brighton on the south coast of England. After their previous bands ceased activity (Lady Muck and Cat On Form respectively) in late 2004 they got together for a jam for fun, Steven took up the drum kit and Laura-Mary played her guitar. It was loud for just two people. Soon after, Jonson Family Records of London offered to release a 7'' single, which sold out in a few weeks and got played on Radio One and XFM. Blood Red Shoes likes Babes in Toyland, Q and not U, cake, chocolate, childishness, Delta 5, zombies and horror, Nirvana, The Bangles, blood and gore, cups of tea, good shoes, dancing, knives, Huggy Bear, and being in a band.

          Product Description

GTA releases its first compilation and it is a winner, starting off with Shiners’ reconstructed cover of My Bloody Valentines ‘only shallow’ (exclusive to this release!) and features another 18 gems to follow! Bands include The Silent League, Tiara, Sheilbound, Duraluxe, Sciflyer, Absinthe Blind, Wayne Everett, Frank Lenz, Electro Group, Camden, Lull Account and many more! 19 songs in all by 19 artists. This compilation was a monster to sequence and is a great introduction to the label! The best comp you’ll ever buy. You wont be sorry. "Compilations are a tough proposition for your everyday music blogger. Most of the time you end up with a few great songs, a few bad ones and a large amount of mediocre filler. I try to avoid them at all cost, but I recently got a package that had what may very well end up becoming one of the best compilations I own. It features new and unreleased music from a collection of bands that have released music on Grand Theft Autumn or have been close to the label through related projects or collaborations and journeys with the former bands of the label owners. Trust me, it?s not by lack of talent that these bands have flown under the radar. It?s one of the unfair realities of the current music landscape, that for every band you enjoy there are another 50 that you?ve never heard of that are even better. Kicking things off with a track from the most well-known band of the bunch, the now defunct Shiner, the disc ebbs and flows from one track to the next, almost seamlessly, better than any mix tape I ever spent weeks working on. And that is the impression that this disc radiates, that the Grand Theft Autumn guys got around and made each and every one of us a personal mix tape with songs from their favorite bands, bands that they know you would like, but haven?t heard yet. Of course I have my favorites of the bunch, as you will have yours and they will differ from your neighbors, but the greatness of this disc, and what sets it beyond the average compilation, is that its strength lays not in the greatness of the tracks it contains but in its ability to act as a complete album of great songs that everyone with any human decency will enjoy." - Mike, Em P Me music blog

Any album that gives us Jason Graae singing "Smashing, New York Times" is worth having.

3 out of 5 stars Great singers, not so great music.......2001-12-26

I love hearing songs from forgotten and lost musicals, and I enjoyed Unsung Musicals I, but I was disappointed with this one. "Lawyers" is easily the best song on the CD. Most of the other songs are ballads, and dull ones at that. (Admittedly, I am not a big ballad fan.) Looks like Bruce Kimmel's song selection process kind of flattened out here. Why, for example, did they choose a ballad from Foxy, when by all accounts the songs originally sung by Bert Lahr in that show were a lot of fun? On the other hand, the singers are very respectable and always worth listening to. Glory Crampton definitely needs more leading roles! My advice is to listen to the song snippets first, to determine if these songs are your thing.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, unsung perhaps, but often wonderful.......2001-02-15

This is the second fine CD in the series of three. These selections may be songs that are not well known from shows in the same category, but some of these are real gems, sung by fine show singers. My favorites are "Lawyers" (from A Broadway Musical), "Everything in the World" (The Yearling), "Smashing New York Times" (also A Broadway Musical), "Run Cinderella" (Foxy), and "Phantom of the Opera" (title song from the Rupert Holmes show). There was a third CD in this series. If its not longer available, they should reissue it. Its on a par with the other two in the series.

          4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Musical Fans.......2000-03-25

The Unsung Musicals albums are a treasure for those who are "mega-fans" of musical theatre. All the songs share the tragic fate of being in a musical that just never made it on the Great White Way.

Some of the songs are somewhat cloying, such as "One Promise Come True." However, there are also some real gems, such as "Lawyers," which has some clever rhymes and a catchy tune. You also get the added bonus of hearing some great singers perform such as Sally Mayes, Rebecca Luker and Davis Gaines.

Overall, this recording is great for both its entertainment and its historical value.

As well as digitally restored original soundtrack music by the undervalued Gray and Easdale, this carefully researched CD also features a number of rare associated recordings, including John Gielgud's reading of An Airman's Letter to his Mother (1941), the lively quickstep Commando Patrol from Col. Blimp and A Canterbury Tale, and a superlative rendering of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, recorded by Albert Schweitzer in London in 1935, also featured in A Canterbury Tale. The booklet features detailed notes on the films and their accompanying scores, and well as biographies of Allan Gray and Brian Easdale. The CD is a must for all with an interest in vintage film soundtracks and British light/orchestral music, as well as the dazzling vision of Michael Powell and his musical collaborators.
