During her far-too-brief career, cellist Jacqueline du Pré exhibited an almost oracular power of communication. Her performances bristled with the kind of brilliant electricity that could change lives and convert listeners to a lifelong love of music. Happily, it's possible to experience a sense of that power from the recordings du Pré completed before multiple sclerosis halted her career as a performer in the early 1970s. This set provides a splendid portrait--at bargain price--of du Pré's unmistakable personality: the astonishingly original yet convincing phrasing, raw energy, and ability to make her instrument sound uncannily like a human voice (du Pré was after all a favored student of Mstislav Rostropovich). Her rendition of Haydn's Concerto in C is clearly cast in a romantic--and nowadays perhaps unfashionable--mold, yet du Pré's big, bold tone carries the musical line forward with exhilarating presence. It's a demeanor that proves especially reassuring for the quirkily mercurial inventions of Boccherini. Yet du Pré most indelibly leaves her signature on the work that became her hallmark, Edward Elgar's E Minor Concerto, grafting a deeply personal level of expression onto the score's rich post-World War I melancholy. In the Schumann, du Pré makes an eloquently passionate protagonist. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful
interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!"
Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The sound quality is excellent, as is the separation and clarity of both the soloist's and orchestral performances. The overall dynanism is also top notch - I found I had to lower the volume substantially from my normal
system loudness levels.
I've enjoyed this set so much I'll probably wind up buying everything from Amazon that EMI has produced with Jacqueline du Pre's name on it!

(Btw, Ashkenazy vs. Davidovich re. the impromptus is a toss up. But since the impromptus aren't on this disc, you can make that critical decision another time.)
Ashkenazy's scherzo #2 (op. 31) IS the best. Period. Other interpretations that your favorite classical music station may substitute are downright lame.
The rest are basically sublime. The first and 4th ballades will send shivers up your spine by Vlad's sheer technical ability. His artistry is second to none.

Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.

The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

Mstislav Rostropovich is the world's greatest cellist, and he has actually made at least five recordings of this greatest of all cello concertos. I have a certain preference for his later version, with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra on Erato. This version has long been a prime recommendation, and in this new remastering at mid-price, it's an even better deal now. Herbert von Karajan accompanies with his usual expertise, and the Tchaikovsky performance is quite simply the finest around. Rostropovich's legacy made through this recording.......2007-05-01
In that regard, it was the only recording I voted for in the Gramophone poll that was represented in the top 100 recordings of the 20th century (the top recording was Solti's Ring followed by Elgar's cello concerto from DuPre, something only a Brit would think of as one of the two best recordings of the 20th century.)
Both conductor (Karajan) and soloist were reaching the peak of their existence after this legendary recording arrived. Having heard the soloists on a number of poorly recorded Soviet LPs of the St. Saens, Dvorak and other concerti (Rostropovich disdained the Elgar), this recording, which was one of the most technically advanced of its era, showed everyone why this cellist was an artist to reckon.
What Rostropovich and DG engineers exposed in 1969 (when DG was still called DGG) was his stupendous technique and the volume of sound he could create using only the solo instrument. Yes, miking and recordings technology had something to do with this, but anyone that knew Rostropovich or heard him play in concert would attest that his sound was bigger than anyone else's. A cellist once explained to me that this was probably the result of the strings he chose, which would have the greatest alteration on sound.
Needless to say, that sound still bursts forth in this recording, which will soon pass onto its fourth decade. For years it was universally selected as the top recommendation in this repertoire above players like Gendron, Fournier, Piatagorsky, Rose, Tortelier and even the more legendary Casals. No one had ever heard a sound like this cellist made, which was even more enhanced by his elegaic playing in the Tchaikovsky variations that accompany the concerto.
Karajan, too, was still in ascension in the 1960s. His position in Europe was similar to Leonard Bernstein's role in North America, where the two kingpins regularly jet setted around the world to enterain audiences in London, Vienna, New York and Berlin. This is clearly one of the greatest recordings ever made and nothing that has happened since will diminish that. If you want to hear what made Rostropovish famous worldwide, buy this recording.
Not the best version of the Dvorák concerto with Slava.......2007-03-02
This could have been the one of the best recordings of Dvorak's cello concerto available, if the conductor had been replaced. Despite his reputation, Karajan is - as too often is the case - the wrong man for conducting a demanding, powerful, lyrical masterpiece. The orchestra is excellent and Slava's concentrated and beautiful playing is of course impeccable - five stars and beyond for that - but Karajan's clinical "Blitzkrieg" approach prevents the lyrical humanism of this music to blossom. Perhaps the man never could stop thinking about how to eventually realize his seriously distorted ideological convictions - and thus he could never become really involved in the true humanism of music. In fact, comparing this version with Slava's other stereo recordings (i.e., with Boult, Giulini, and Ozawa) of this work suggests that the cellist could not really develop his deep understanding during these sessions. Karajan's streamlined, bandwagon view of music and Slava's lyrical humanism seem to belong to different worlds.
Now, as already indicated, there is a bunch of other recordings with Slava and the Dvorák concerto. We have three other stereo recordings, one with Boult (Testament), one with Giulini (EMI) and one with Ozawa (Erato). Furter, there are four mono recordings: with Khaikin (Revelation or Yedang); with Talich (Supraphon), which was Slava's first recording of the concerto. Finally, there is the famous 1968 concert with Svetlanov (BBC Legends) and a broadcats concerto with Ancerl in Toronto (Tahra).
How does the present recording stand in comparison with these other recordings? The performance with Carlo Maria Giulini and London Philharmonic Orchestra (EMI) is good but not great, but the recording quality is outstanding. Ozawa's interpretation (Erato), which came even later, also in stereo, is not entirely convincing, lacking in Bohemian temperament, but the recording and playing are fine here too. Finally, the early Boult (Testament) is an excellent, warm, and structured interpretation, but in vintage stereo sound. But it should not be left out for that reason. We get a different perspective from Boult, less "passionate" and more structured, so to speak. In fact, I hold the Boult recording to be the best of all Slava's performances, stereo or mono. In contrast to the present account, where the stiff and stylish accompaniment don't fit the cellist's vision, that powerful performance will move you to tears and blow your mind.
But the studio mono recordings with Khaikin and Talich are also both of great interest. But in my view, Slava's first recording with Talich holds a special place, because both playing and interpretation are first class. The interpretation is far more controlled than Giulini's more lyrical approach, and avoids von Karajan's extremes. Yes, it is a mono recording, but that's fine with me. Khaikin's recording is very fine too, even if it is not as convincing as Talich's.
Finally, the two live mono recordings - Svetlanov and Ancerl - are also very memorable. But of these two, I rank Ancerl before Svetlanov, because of the former's superb grasp of the score.
In sum, I rank the Slava-Dvorák recordings, that I am familiar with, as follows: I. Boult, 2. Talich, 3. Ancerl, 4. Svetlanov, 5. Khaikin, 6. Giulini, 7. Ozawa, 9. Karajan.
In sum, this recording doesn't replace Boult's, which offers a more tautly structured approach, not as "overblown" as von Karajan's, Giulini's, and Ozawa's. But check Slava/Talich and Slava/Ancerl if you look for two other great Slava interpretations. And then there are of course other great cellists to consider, in both stereo and in mono: Fournier (DG, stereo), and Casals (Naxos, EMI, Dutton - mono). My advice is that you should have at least one of these too.
(Karajan's fanatical admirers will not appreciate this review. But my advice to you is to try other recordings - there is a world beyond von Karajan.)
Amazingly beautiful music.......2006-12-06
The thing is, I like this piece of music. I like the sound. It's things like these that make me adore Dvorak, because there's just so much feeling and intensity. There's a sort of quality that just makes me love it. And I'm sure you'll love it too, is the thing.
So getting the general music out of the way, the playing here is also incredible. The sound quality is surprisingly good and the music sounds great. Every sudden burst of volume is powerful and pretty at the same time. Rostropovich plays really well and everything is just so nice.
The Tchaikovsky is also very nice. It's a nice little bonus alongside the main gem that is the cello concerto. With this wonderful recording and playing, the price shouldn't even matter, though I guess that it only helps that this is surprisingly cheap. It's a superb deal that I recommend whole-heartedly. It's a great CD that can be listened to at any time.

If you love Mozart and want to hear some beautiful works played by masters of their respective instruments(at an unbelievable price) buy this CD collection. You will love it! The sound is great too belying the age of the recordings. They sound, to me, as if they were recorded very recently. In other words, great transfers to the CD format!
Simply Amazing!.......2005-04-10
Perlman's playing is wonderful. At times it seems (to my untrained ear) that he may use a bit too much vibrato (or perhaps it's just too fast), though I'm not familiar with classical violin playing conventions, so this may be the proper way. Nonetheless, his tone is still rich and full and his technique is flawless. The pianist's playing is clear and accurate, and the two musicians make a perfect team (both technically and stylistically).
I'm not quite sure how these pieces fit into Mozarts body of work (stylistically, chronologically), but to me, they seem to have a youthful energy and vibrance that I've not heard in his later clarinet works. You will really enjoy them!

Great Schubert, but add some schmaltz please!.......2007-03-18
The only thing I figured out is that Mr. Brendel was just too elegant and detached here for my taste. To use a metaphor, he was as elegant as a black cocktail dress, while a dress with some frills, colors, lace, and something soft would have been more appropriate here, I felt. In my view, even some schmaltz would be welcome here.
I guess it all depends on how you would be affected by this CD, so I do encourage you to try it!

Not only are the pieces relatively brief, but the absence of instruments other than solo piano and the evasion of bombast by Schubert altogether make these compositions small music.
But small is beautiful.
Alfred Brendel is at his understated best in his mastery of this genre. Lovers of the keyboard already know that Brendel can flow with Beethovian grandeur together with the best of them. He approaches Schubert's Impromptus, Deutsche Tanze, and Moment Musicaux as an artist with nothing to prove. The result is a pure reading of Schubert that leaves one savoring the music rather than the performer. That's a nice result that credits rather than demeans the pianist.
The Philips Classic ('Duo') series is at its usual peak form for quality, price, and therefore value.

Control of speed and pressure on the keys is critical in every piece, especially no.3 and no.4 in D.899.
With that said, Brendel's playing is very straightforward and textbook to the very core essentials. The playing is very clean, and his tempo is well under control. However, that's where it ends, as he doesn't bring the liveliness into these works of beauty. Schubert sounds nothing more than a . If you want the music itself without any passion, then this is the album to get. Sound quality is excellent.
The best schubert impromptus I have heard thus far is from Murray Perahia and Radu Lupu. Of the two, I prefer Murray Perahia's. His playing really defines Schubert as a composer - the emotional output is all there, in every note, every phrase. There is not a single part in any of the impromptus where it can be considered dull. Listen to his recording and you will see what I mean. Radu Lupu tends to put more emphasis on the lyrical qualities of these pieces by using strong vibrato. If you really want something out of this world, then try Mitsuko Uchida's version, which is the complete opposite of Brendel, with erratic playing (much like her own personality).

An Outstanding Collection.......2002-02-12
A lot of violinists, myself included, feel that Perlman has had a rather inconsistent recording career, and A La Carte should be impressive and refreshing for his critics. The exceptional sound quality of this recording makes it a very involving experience and great addition to any audiophile's collection. I never tire of this album, and it is a mainstay and a favorite in my collection. I recommend it 100%.

THis CD gives you a proper taste of Tchaikovsky's style, and is a very nice sampler of some of his most famous works. This CD lacks some of his more energetically volatile works, but it thus lives up to its title. It is extremely relaxing, and soothes you as you listen to it. The works are melodic, and the orchestras and soloists are superb, especially in the Serenade and the Rococco Variations. I highly recommend this CD for anyone, even if you aren't a huge classical music fan.
