A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price.The sound quality is decent,however it is not great.This set will not provide you with the crisp,clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

Part One: It must have been the wax.

While it is essential for any artist to interpret the work of another before them, a regard for the original author must remain intact. This is an ambitious recording, however, we are rarely judged by our intent and far more often by our act. All too often in this recording we are listening to the artist playing an author's work rather than the author's work being played by an artist. Hubris abounds in this recording, from its conception to its release, and unfortunately suffers an all too predictable fate.

Part Two: I can see the numbers.

However, even more disenchanting than the usurping of a masterwork is the lack of inspired performances, as if each is so out of context that within the confines of these "snippets" the artist never engages leaving the listener equally disengaged, akin to a polished paint-by-numbers canvas executed in water color by a haphazard collection of period icons. If this was the very first recording of this sterling composition, it may well have been the very last.

Four Seasons a Winner.......2005-07-21

This is the second copy of Vivaldi's Greatest Hit I have purchased. I liked it so much, I decided to buy another copy to give my 15-yr-old nephew, who is a violinist and lover of classical music. He loves it, too, so two thumbs up from this reviewer.

A New Twist for an Old Favorite!.......2004-05-28

I own two other renderings of "The Four Seasons" in addition to this one, and this disc is my favorite. Vivaldi intended for "The Four Seasons" to be a multimedia experience, incorporating music, image, and poetry. This collection truly captures that spirit of versatility by arranging the work for several different instruments (not just guitar, as the previous review would have you believe). In addition, the movements rendered with soloist Gottfried von der Goltz on the Baroque violin sound almost completely different from any previous recordings. His style is hard, almost violent, while his instrument sounds much darker and richer than a modern violin. It adds a depth to "The Four Seasons" lacking in many new studio recordings. The third movement from "Summer" in particular is stunning, with von der Goltz transforming it from a mere succession of rushing 16th notes into an exuberant, virtuosic portrait of a prairie thunderstorm. The guitar, flute, and electronic arrangements (only one electronic arrangement, however) are excellent, retaining the true spirit of the original while managing to add something new. The disc contains the entire cycle of the seasons twice, with various different instrumentations playing each movement. Lovers of "The Four Seasons," Baroque music, or classical music in general will find MUCH to appreciate here!

Not as much fun as it could be given the premise.......2003-04-16

This isn't a bad album. It's a perfectly nice run-through of Four Seasons, twice. But the premise is that there are many different performers in many different styles, and the actuality comes out less varied than one would hope.

The performers are certainly all-stars, and there's nothing wrong with any of the performances. It's just that, they're, well, the same performances those all-stars could give any time. There are no new interpretations of the work. There are very few adaptations to unusual instruments - except for the movements done mainly on guitar, everything else is essentially the basic original orchestration, with different soloists filling in instead of the violin - Michaela Petri on recorder, James Galway on flute, etc.

And I didn't feel that the choice of which soloists did which movements was as inspired as it could have been. In several movements, the soloists hardly came across as soloists at all. The order in which the performers appeared, appeared to have been chosen at random. That is, every movement was played in order, with some randomly chosen set of artists doing it. Then, the (nearly) whole thing was played again, this time with the artists chosen randomly a different way, so that Michaela Petri was doing a different movement from the first time through.

Many casual listeners to classical music aren't aware that each "Season" is actually made up of three sections. The recording switches performers with every section. I personally think this would have been more effective if one set of performers had done all three sections of a season, long enough for the listener to really get a feel for their sound, then switched to another performer only with the change of seasons. With 8 seasons to go through (four times two), that still would have allowed for plenty of variety, and left one much more able to appreciate that variety.

"Qualifications for divahood may be elusive, but there is little doubt that the 17 artists featured in this collection eminently qualify." George Jeffries. To which I heartily agree!!!!! The term 'diva' refers to the goddesses of the operatic world who are loved and endorsed by the media and audiences everywhere. The term has been in use since the early days of opera, and will no doubt continue 'ad infinitum'.
I will focus on a few that I personally like to hear:In Cecelia Bartoli's selection from 'Cinderella', a very much admired role,she exchanges her early life for a bright future with Prince Charming, and does so with expressive and great joy! I especially liked her in Handel's opera "Rinaldo" in which she stars along with David Daniels, American countertenor. She, in fact could be called the successor to Marilyn Horne,the Mezzo of an earlier generation.
In Horne's aria from Rossini's "Italian in Algiers", she unleashes her formidable 2 octave range as the brave Italian lady unfazed by a mere shipwreck and the prospects of an Algerian harem. MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!!
In my conservatory days I was priveleged to see Kirsten Flagstad 'live' in several Wagnerian operas. Not only was it a sight to hear her, but to see AND hear her was a memorable and totally unforgetable experience. Her voice was BIG and her body (especially as seen in costume)was equally so, but she sang notes that I'm not sure can really be sung anymore (no doubt,that's an exaggeration)but I'm trying to make a point here, so bear with me.
Now the consummate soprano has to be Kathleen Battle; my favorite role is Handel's "Semele" that includes a star-studded cast that also includes Marilyn Horne; just a great listen!!!!
I'm sure this album is not perfect, but I have had many many hours of listening enjoyment, so go for it!!!!!!

ILL FITTED ARIAS MAKES THIS CD INTERESTING BUT NOT AMAZING.......2004-11-22

The overall CD was a nice collection however there were several pieces that seemed ill placed with certain "divas" Both Cecilia Bartoli and Marilyn Horne show off their rich voices and passion in the selections chosen for them. But Angela Gheorghiu's "Sempre Libera" was shrill and incomplete without the usual high "C" finish. She has had so many other pieces that are so much better than what was featured including my favorite by her "Mi Chiamano Mimi" Rebata Tebaldi has never thrilled me nor Montserrat Caballe do what they do and that's about it. I do like Mirella Freni's voice in general but once again didn't feel like this was one of her better pieces. Joan Sutherland, whom I adore, does great justice to "Casta Diva" but I have always preferred her more "florid" arias such as her "Lucia" But then again I am partial to Maria Callas in the role, the one soprano who was curiously missing. Her most famous track "Vissi D'Arte" was handed over to Leontyne Price who has the voice and the spirit of Tosca but just doesn't have the passion Callas does. I would much more preferred Ms. Price style in the arias of "Il Trovatorel" that holds her as one of the all time great Leonaro. I love Fleming and Kiri Te Kanawa but would prefer them switched with Kiri voicing her sweetness into "Ave Maria" and Fleming adding her richness to "Dove Sono" I like Frederica Von Stade for her simplicity in "Voi Che Sapete" and Sumi Jo has excellent tonal quality in the aria listed as "Queen of the Night's Revenge" which is actually named "Der Holle Rache", Kathleen Battle has always bored me but she does a nice cut of "Durch Zartlichkeit und Schmeicheln" . My two Dramatic German Sopranos Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson, are so impressive that I have yet to find anyone who can matched their beauty. The overall cd was a fun one to listen even if it lacked in proper aria placement.

Excellent CD, but where is Miss Norman?.......2003-10-10

First and foremost, I must say that Diva Battle stole the show. Her rendition of Mozart's "Durch Zarlichkeit" is absolutely astounding. Even if you are not a fan of the other singers, the CD is worth its price just to hear Miss Battle.

I must say, I was quite disappointed when I noticed that Jessye Norman was not included in this compilation. She is the Supreme Diva!! If anyone should have been included, it should have been her. Perhaps they will come out with a CD entitled "The Diva: Jessye Norman", as that is the only way they could do her justice. She's in a league of her own.

Buy the CD. You will not be disappointed.

The Best of the Best.......2002-01-26

I'm sorry I had to give this CD only 4 stars - it really deserves more. I had to subtract a star for the absence of La Divina - Maria Callas - from this disc. If she doesn't qualify as a diva, who does?

That said, this is a FANTASTIC compilation CD. It features all (well, a good sampling) of the great sopranos of past and present. All my favorites are here: Bartoli, Fleming, Battle, Kanawa, and of course, Sumi Jo.

The editors were very careful to include arias which display each soprano's strengths and predilections in repertoire - Bartoli has her bubbly Rossini, Sumi Jo her dazzling coloratura in Mozart, and Renee Fleming, with the most heartrending and beautiful version of Desdemona's "Ave Maria" from Verdi's Otello that I have ever heard. I can't help but catch my breath on the last syllable of "prega" - her tone is that innocent and pure. Kiri Te Kanawa, the consummate Countess, also makes an appearance with a very moving "Dove Sono".

This disc is also teaching me to appreciate the greats of yesteryear like Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson - the legendary Wagnerian sopranos.

PLEASE don't listen to the previous reviewer - Kathleen Battle does not "fall flat" on Durch Zärtlichkeit. Only a beautiful soubrette like hers could pull off a challenging aria like that, and she does it marvelously (as usual ;)

This is a wonderful cd for new fans of opera. It contains a wonderful selection of songs from some of the greatest divas.

Kathleen "The Great" Battle(my personal fav) just steals the show. Her delicate vocals can carry any wary listener into the pearly gates of heaven (bravo, bravo, encore, encore).

Not a Lullaby at All!.......2003-09-10

I can't give this CD anything but a 2. It was certainly NOT the Ultimate Lullaby. And although the music is beautiful I would not put my baby to sleep with this. I'm not a fan of opera and perhaps if I listen a bit more that may change. Our daughter listens to music every night. It is so hard to buy music sometimes and I went out on a limb with this one. I really wish it had stated that there were vocals - I much prefer the music without.

I bought this cd on a whim, and I got way more than I bargained for! I'm an opera singer and I absolutely love the assortment of gorgeous ballads - lots of classics and old favorites. I agree this might not be the best music to lull and infant to sleep, but it's a great way to build your child's appreciation for operatic vocals. I highly recommend this cd singers - specifically sopranos. It's a diamond in the rough.

Caveat emptor.......2002-10-21

I'm in violent agreement with the other reviewers who remarked that this CD is not for the purpose of lulling baby to sleep, in spite of its misleading title. A1-opera-grade sopranos and mezzos sing most of the selections and their vocal dynamics range from pianissimo to a house-shaking fortissimo. The only track where baby might catch a bit of shut-eye is Puccini's "Humming Chorus" from "Madama Butterfly."

Try "Celtic Lullaby" if you're looking for a truly sleep-inducing CD.

"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" contains a wonderful assortment of Marilyn Horne and Leontyne Price solos, which is all to the good if you're not trying to snooze. My two favorites are the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" sung by Price (I don't think there is a more perfect rendition), and Bach's "Bist Du bei Mir" sung by Horne in her rich, smooth, chocolate-y prime.

Unfortunately another grand voice is not at its prime in "When You Wish upon a Star." I'd guess Dame Joan was near the end of her stellar (sorry) career when she recorded this Disney song. Her vibrato stretches as wide as Dumbo's behind.

Another rather odd selection is the only instrumental arrangement on this CD: "O Danny Boy" as rendered by the English Chamber Orchestra, with a trombone as the lugubrious solo instrument. It's long enough and trite enough to be used as the soundtrack for that tacky sequel to "Gone with the Wind."

"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" is definitely not for baby's room. If you want your kid to grow up listening to "Londonderry Air," get Kiri Te Kawana's version. It'll prickle up the hair on the back of your neck if you can find it. I can't. I wore out my original tape and have fruitlessly searched the Internet for a new copy. If anyone out there in Amazon land has a recording of Dame Kiri singing folksongs of the British Isles, please consider selling it to me.

Ultimate Lullaby Album.......2002-06-01

The music is superb. Although it would not be used to put the baby to sleep, it is a wonderful choice for one-to-one relaxing time with baby.
An excellent addition to the new baby's music collection. I listened to it with my class in school before giving it to my brand new grandson. I now give it as a gift to all newborns.

3 music fans gave different ratings. 2 said it's diappointing, the other said they were ridiculous. I bought and listened to this CD. I feel great about my purchase. These are good music, and there should not be a dispute. If one is disappointed because of the opera voice, blame it on Decca's label "Ultimate Lullaby". The music deserves my 5-satr rating.

Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful.

We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico!

It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

If you love Christmas as much as I do, you will probably enjoy this album. It features plenty of standard favorites - especially sung by the MoTab, who seem to be a holiday staple. I probably wouldn't pay $17.95 just to hear songs like 'The Little Drummer Boy' of 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas.'

What makes this compillation interesting is the liberal sprinkling of less traditional - or, anyway, less well-known - classical pieces. Vivaldi's 'Gloria', Corelli's 'Christmas Concerto', and the opera 'Hansel and Gretel' all make an appearance. The standout, in my mind, is the ethereally beautiful 'Watt's Cradle Hymn,' which I have never seen or heard anywhere else - that one song alone makes this album worth a listen.

Not ultimate, but truly classical.......2003-11-19

Good mix of the expected ("Silent Night", "O Come All Ye Faithful", etc) and the unexpected (the Vivaldi Gloria, Gabrieli, Schutz). Kudos to the Sony team for uniform clarity & quality of sound, despite source material from 1959 through 1998. Word to the wise: the performance of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" credited to Marilyn Horne is actually by Eileen Farrell from her excellent "Carols for Christmas Eve" release. No disrespect to Ms Horne, who is well represented by two performances with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. If you're truly a classical music fan but don't mind a traditional carol or two, this is an excellent buy.
