Amazon.com essential recording
Paul McCreesh's second major recording (and second Gramophone Award winner) reconstructs Vespers for the Feast of the Annunciation at San Marco circa 1643, using music by Monteverdi and contemporaries including Cavalli, Grandi, and Rigatti. The music is less dense and lavishly scored than on A Venetian Coronation, but more virtuosic and varied--ranging from Finetti's sweet, languid "O Maria, quæ rapis" for two falsettists and Monteverdi's lively "Laudate Dominum" for solo tenor, to Marini's sensuous sonata for three violins and Monteverdi's spectacular "Lætatus sum" for six singers, two violins, two trombones, and bassoon over a repeated four-note bass. There is so much excitement here that even the opening of "Lætatus sum"--four measures of only the repeating bass--shimmers with energy. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
One of the best Gabrieli Consort recordings.......2007-03-17
This really a fine recording. I bought my copy one sunny Saturday morning in Melbourne in around 1993. I saw it on the shelf and I got my wallet out. I was completely blown away by the music on this disc. Rigatti was a real discovery for me.
The use of high falsettists in the chorus and solos is particularly effective and gives us a real insight into the sounds of music in Venice in the early 17th century.
I cannot recommend this marvellous recording too highly, it is clearly one of the best made by the Gabrieli Consort, Choir & Players.
Great playing from the strings, cornetti and tromboni.
Holy music.......2005-10-16
Venice, once the most powerful city in the world due to its position in trade routes and as a nexus for military activities between the East and West, was also a leading centre for the arts and music for generations. As often happens, the cultural influence of the city remained strong long after the political and economic power was gone. So strong was the influence of Venice at this time that musicians and artists of other nations came to Venice to study, and carried back the influence to their home countries. One of the towering figures of this history was Claudio Monteverdi, who along with his many compositions sacred and secular, is credited with the first opera, 'L'Orfeo'. Monteverdi's compositions form the heart of this collection, which is designed as would be a Vespers service in St. Mark's Basilica in 1643.
Monteverdi is the leading light in this collection, but other composers of the time are also featured. The great Giovanni Gabrieli is acknowledged not only in the opening piece, but also in the name of the performers: the Gabrieli Consort and Players, under the direction of Paul McCreesh. Other composers featured include Rigatti, Grandi, Banchieri, Finetti, Cavalli, Marini, and Fasolo. The service of Vespers at St. Mark's was an elaborate affair, enhanced with extraliturgical motets and instrumental music, according to McCreesh. This was not according to standard liturgical practice, but was typical Venetian practice, where the Vespers became a very popular event. The Doge regularly attended the service.
This recording includes musical settings and plainchant from the time. While St. Mark's had a choir and consort of players totaling as many as 30 people each, usually services would only require about half that number. The choir would have had castrati as part of the vocal ensemble; that vocal range has been provided here by female sopranos and male falsettists.
Paul McCreesh formed the Gabrieli Consort and Players while still a student at Manchester University in the 1980s. Since then, the group and conductor have gone on to international awards and acclaim, specialising in music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which this particular disc fits by being done at the mid-point of the transition between the two.
This is a glorious, two-disc collection, done in a wonderful form of reconstructing what an actual service would be like. It is a brilliant performance, with graceful vocal and instrumental blending and strong tones of the spirit of music.
Good work Gabrieli.......2003-03-20
Excellent 2-disc release by the Gabrieli Consort. The falsettists were supreme!
A Magnificent Set.......2001-10-23
The Vespers that Paul McLeish has reconstructed here are those that might have occurred on March 24, 1643, just one year before the death of Monteverdi whose music figures prominently in this service. Vespers is the principle evening service of the Catholic Church and in Venice the music written for this service was spectacular. At San Marco, the Doge regularly attended Vespers and it was typical that the Pala d'oro, the fantastic piece of Byzantine art, was on display.
The music recorded here has great appeal. The Dixit Dominus by Giovanni Antonio Rigatti is very evocative of the warlike nature of Psalm 109 and the four pieces by Monteverdi are among his best works. Of these, the Laetatus sum on Psalm 121 is characterized by highly colorful vocal writing and brilliant scoring which includes a trombone and bassoon, and Monteverdi's Laudate Dominum (Psalm 150) has exquisite writing for the voice. One of the highlights is the motet by Alessandro Grandi O intermerata, which is beautifully sung by Charles Daniels. But I would have to say that I have heard this work by sung with more passion and color by Nigel Rogers (on the recording Venice Preserved). I do recommend comparing the two performances.
The performances are truly excellent on this CD and the recording lends a feeling of a large space, so if you close your eyes you could think you have been transported to San Marco. Paul McLeish put a lot of scholarly work into reconstructing this service but it is not a dry example of scholarship but a vivid and brilliant performance. This is excellent music making that I highly recommended and is precisely that excellence that I have come to expect from the Gabrieli Consort.
An amazing reproduction of 17th century Vespers.......1999-12-17
Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players have put together an entirely captivating re-creation of a Vespers service, the Catholic office of evening prayer, as it might have been performed at St. Mark's in Venice in the early 17th century. From the sacristy bell, to the chants, to the massive and breathtaking polychoral hymns and psalms, McCreesh weaves a tapestry of sound that is simply unparalleled. The Gabrieli Players' violinists play with such Italianate freshness and detail -- down to the last trill -- and the sopranos' voices are so fresh and lively that this CD is simply a must-own for any fan of Early Music. Having just seen the Consort and Players perform in Columbus, OH on 15 Dec. 1999, I can say for sure that this group is simply magical. There are few CDs I would grab on my way out of a burning building -- this is one.

Customer Reviews:
One More Great Percy Faith Twofer by Collectables.......2006-02-12
Two big qualities distinguish the late Percy Faith.
First of all he was an original arranger with all those strings combined as if in a brass section in a unique sound. Second of all, he was a staff arranger for Columbia Records what gave him the opportunity to work on memorable albums by Johnny Mathis and other singers.
This twofer shows two different approaches: the first 12 takes came from his splendid album 'The Love Godessess' full of Mr. Faith's own compositions for films and TV series like 'The Virginian'. They're such inspired songs like the title song and 'Celia's Waltz'.
The second 12 takes came from another album with a miscellaneous movie soundtrack repertoire. They're such great songs by great composers but Mr. Faith's arrangements do not add any special flavor to the originals.
A special note on Collectables Records regarding its extraordinary series of twofers which have finally issued virtually all Percy Faith material.
"Miklos Rozsa epic film scores ~ Percy Faith".......2003-07-04
Every week I would go to the downtown library and check out the latest albums (LP's) ~ my eyes would always look for the Percy Faith releases. One of my favorites was "The Love Goddesses", featuring compositions by Maestro Faith, something about his string arrangements drew me to this album. At that time I had a reel-to-reel recorder/player and cassette recorder, would tape every album by Mr. Faith I could get my hands on. Later I would go to Webster Records the local record store in Old Webster, Mo. and purchase his latest releases.
Entire album is a stand out, but here are some of the highlights ~ "MARILYN", beautiful haunting melody as strings and counter strings open, blending a harp that keeps reoccurring in your head ~ "THE VAMP", solo clarinet with plunking violins, enters the solo violin and full strings answer, simply beautiful ~ "OUR LOVE", is typical Percy Faith with an arrangement to die for ~ "CELIA'S WALTZ", a solo saxophone comes forward with counterpoints from Faith's famous string section, the melody gets under your skin and becomes intoxicating ~ "OBA! (BOSSA NOVA)", what is a Percy Faith album without Latin flavor, and this is what he does best.
Second half of the album is "Hollywood's Great Themes", opening with "EL CID(LOVE THEME), "THEME FROM KING OF KINGS" and "BEN HUR(LOVE THEME)" the legendary Miklos Rozsa could do no wrong when it came to epic films, Faith's brilliant arrangement puts the listener right up there on the big screen ~ "MARIA", the wonderful song from "West Side Story" that will go one forever ~ "THEME FROM LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA", a heart-wrenching film with a light floating melody that lingers on, just take a listen to Faith's strings in top form ~ what a classic arrangement from the git-go!
Total Time: 72:52 on 24 Tracks ~ Collectables 7478 ~ (3/19/2002)
Uneven outing for Faith.......2002-05-20
This twofer, with over 70 minutes of music, provides a showcase for Faith-penned tunes and some lesser known hits from Hollywood. The Love Goddess finds the Faith arrangements full of his trademark strings, but several hits are distinctive in that Faith employs the brassiness of a big band sound, especially on Cheesecake. Keystone Kapers, with whistles and bells, is forgetful, but other selections are an easy listen. Hollywood's Great Themes contains selections that certainly would not make anyone's list of great themes from Hollywood. Would you pick the love theme from Ben Hur, or the theme from Light in the Piazza, or how about Over and Over Again from Jumbo? The only real Hollywood classic here is Moon River, though Faith does add a smattering of Richard Rodgers, with Hart and Hammerstein.
Love Goddesses/Hollywoods Great Themes.......2002-03-23
The Love Goddesses from 1964 is a fairely good album by Faith and oneI'm glad to add to my collection. This album is more jazzeier than a lot of Faith's other albums. Some songs are very lush such as Marilyn Our Love,The Monoco Theme,The Love Goddess,Chico Bolero, and Celia's Waltz. The other songs on this album are upbeat with incarnations of jazz especially Cheesecake.Oba is a bossa nova and is pretty good. All songs from the Love Goddesses album was written by Percy Faith himself.Hollywood's Great Themes from 1962 is movie themes and some are very good. This album features light strings with the exception of the last two Theme From The Four Horseman Of The Apocalypse and Theme From Light In The Plazza These two have heavy strings. My favorite is Splendor In The Grass. This album was only available on cassette several years ago beforecollectibles, taragon, good music and ranwood came along with Faith reissiues.Back then only 4 albums were out by Faith and 2 cassettes this one and Deep Purple which were hard to find than.Liner Notes are included for the Love Goddesses but are not included for Hollywoods Great Themes.Another great 2 on 1 album with 2 great albums by Faith.

Legendary soprano Rosa Ponselle recalled these sessions taped by RCA in her Baltimore home as the only time she enjoyed making records. Fourteen years after her abrupt retirement from opera, her voluptuous instrument (ruby red in the '39 Victors and now tinged with purple) soars to better advantage in the amplitude of her spacious music room than within the cramped confines of the recording studio. Whether in Beethoven, Schubert, Debussy, Mozart, or Tosti songs, or chestnuts like "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes," the vocalism is always informed by Ponselle's musical intelligence and sense of style. Romophone brings together all the material from these home sessions, including 75 minutes of music not issued by RCA, plus a promotional interview that reveals a warm, down-to-earth persona quite different from your typical diva stereotype. Ponselle fans need no encouragement to acquire this set. --Dan Davis

Revealing.......2004-12-28
It must be remembered when approaching these recordings that we are not hearing the Ponselle of the Met singing her great roles, we are hearing the Ponselle of retirement, and a long retirement. She seems to have left her career right at its height, and for whatever reasons. She was not idle, but was active in the world of opera in other ways (including working with many now famous singers when they were students: Sherryl Milnes, Beverly Sills just to name two). She approached her music with the vibrancy of her time, which is often at odds with how we would sing such things today (the Mozart aria for Cherubino for example). However, even though we hear a voice that has now started to show wear, not from oversinging, but rather from not being used all that often and from age, we are not listening to someone who has "lost it all." Everything that made her great is still there for us to enjoy and wish we could experience. Her range is no longer seamless as it was during her active singing career (a thing she was noted for), but her legato is a wonder to behold, as it was during her most active singing years. It is no wonder that singing teacher tell students to listen to her recordings to learn what legato is all about (and as a result, Ponselle is one of the most immitated singers in history, but at no time has anyone ever captured her sound, her quality, her depth of tone, her ring, her anything; people may try to immitate the essence of her singing by copying what they hear -- even the great Maria Callas' interpretations in La Vesta sound like haunting echos of Ponselle -- but what was the depth of her interpretations or of her voice no one has ever come close to matching). Her chest notes are raw at times, but they do not ruin the music in any way. Her top notes (which always put terror into her heart, but for the life of me, after listening to all her recordings available, I cannot figure out why -- even after reading her story of why the High C in Aida scared her so much --- her high notes were extremely secure, even a high D flat in the trovatore arias, no strain is evident at any time, not ever!), well, her top notes are at time frayed and not centered as they were. Still, once again, that is not a bother. It is evident that at times she has to "work rather noticeably" to produce her top notes, but there again, we are not offended by what we hear.
What we do experience, and mostly because we have no arias from her great roles to listen to, is the Ponselle way with a song. She just seemed to embrace a song and make it her own. Her interpretation may be enjoyable to you, you may find other singers you like better, but her interpretation is NEVER common and without validity. Each piece is truly her own stamped completely with her emotional and vocal understanding of the text and the music.
That brings me to the diction part of the recording. Her RRRRRR (rolled R, or tongue trill by some) is very pronounced and now days may be seen as tasteless. However, it was the way things were sung then, and not just in Italian (even English actors rolled their R's beyond belief at that time). Personally, the well pronouced rolled R has never bothered me whatever, and in a way, I expect to hear it when singers are singing opera. It is so played down now days, one is sometimes completely unaware an R was even said. Ponselle's diction is incredible, and I don't just say that. Each and every word is completely understandable, even in English (which is crystle clear). It seems that was a common trait back in her day, for in many recordings of that time and earlier that I have the singers are exceptionally clear with their diction (even the Met manager, former singer, Edward Johnson is so clear while singing English -- a collection of Canadian songs -- one is stunned that the poor recordings quality didn't just eat up the words). Perhaps such singers as Renee Flemming and all the other greats of today should play some Ponselle recordings and learn what diction is all about.
These recordings, though made long after her retirement, are still a great testiment as to what she was like as a singer, for they give us all the greatness that was hers. It makes people like me, who were born after she retired (though quite a while before she died, as I remember her well on live from the met broadcasts on the radio Saturday afternoons) wish we could go back in time and hear some real singing.
In addition to the music, we have some interviews with Ruby Mercer, which are a real delight to listen to. No wonder people like Sills have nothing but great memories working with Ponselle. She is truly well grounded. She knows her contribution to the world of music for exactly what it is. There is no false modesty, nor is there any "high mindedness about self." We have a very down to earth person talking about things, even why she chose some of the music she did, in a very down to earth way.
I recommend the set to anyone who loves to hear great singing, even if it would have more appeal to collectors than average people. It is well recorded, and the sound is excellent. It is a treasure to have on any record shelf.
Villa Pace Recordings.......2003-05-15
This recording is a must for anyone who loves to hear art songs sung incredibly. Aside from Rosa Ponselle's voice being arguably one of the most beatiful, distictive, incredible sounding voices (so big that it was troublesome to record), the fact that she is also one of the greatest vocal artists in the world is also evident. Although most of the songs were recoreded when her voice wasn't as capable of stunning high high C's (there wasn't any Aida aria's on this one), her musicality, ability to act with her voice, and her use of language is breath-taking. Especially nice, is her french, it's so clear and clean, yet doesn't sound constricted or bothersome. The best track is the second lower version of "When I have sung my Songs". It is truly phenomenal, and her singing of this piece is a true testament to what this woman was capable of. Also her "o del mio amato ben" some of the most dramatically genuine singing I 've heard. Buy this CD if you want to hear some real singing and one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.
