Oh man, what a mess. Let me see if I can pull this apart-- "Road Trippin'", fifth single from "Californication", never saw release in the US. Overseas, it saw release as either a great single with four live tracks or as three (!) parts, each with different material on them.

This is part 2, backed by live versions of "Under the Bridge" and "If You Have to Ask". The former also appears on part 3.

The title track is superb-- an acoustic affair with no drum track, fantastic finger picked guitars, overdubbed strings, and a lovely vocal harmony, it's the kind of thing you can't believe that the Chili Peppers would do.

"Under the Bridge" gets a great reading, with a sort of subtle energy behind the song (probably due to Flea superlative bass work) and guitarist John Frusciante doing a great job on the harmony vocal. "If You Have to Ask", likewise comes off great, sinking into a great and clearly Anthony Kiedis is having a blast belting out the lyrics.

Still, it's not worth getting this one-- dig up the all in one single, there's quite a bit more value in that.

A Great Song.......2001-02-23

Road Trippin is probably one of the best tracks in the Californiacation album. This is a pretty good single it has Road Trippin obviosly,and two live tracks Under The Bridge and If You Have To Ask live.I think they shold have put more tracks thought. I prefer you buy the other Road Trippin single because it has more live tracks.I have both versions of the Road Trippin singles because I am a huge RHCP fan and collect alot of their stuff but this is a good single and I think its a buyer.

Another one of those two-part singles, this particular single (title track and leadoff single from the album "By the Way") contains the title track backed by two non-album b-sides, "Time", and a cover of Dion & the Belmont's "Teenager in Love".

Interested parties are advised to be careful-- there are two formations of the two parts of these singles-- if you're looking for all four b-sides, make sure you get a matching set.

So things have changed with the Peppers, and in many ways, "By the Way" is sort of a culmination of the band's career-- a chorus of clean tone guitars washed in vocal harmonies and a funky, slap-bass driven distorted verse mingle to put together just a fantastic song.

The b-sides are a mixed batch-- "Time" is kind of dull, it's a mid-tempo piece with arpeggiated guitars on the chorus, but it just doesn't seem to work at all, but "Teenager in Love" is fantastic-- who would've thought ten years ago that the Peppers had this in them? A relatively straight cover, with John Frusciante providing harmony vocals and Anthony Kiedis intoning the lyrics with more bite than anyone his age should be able to, it just works, and it works great.

Invariably, this is likely to draw quite a bit of criticism, doing a cover of an early '60s pop ballad when you used to be a band that ran around with a sock on and nothing else, but people change and good bands grow, and certainly this one did. Recommended.
