Most posthumous albums are shrouded in a sense of morbid nostalgia and grim curiosity. In Sublime's case, there was also some cruel irony to contend with: the California nuevo-punk outfit's promising self-titled major-label debut and commercial breakout was released barely a month after frontman Brad Nowell's death from a heroin overdose--and their de facto demise. But such was the Long Beach band's longtime following that raiding the vaults, however sparse, was inevitable. Released 18 months after Nowell's death, Second Hand Smoke more than lived up to its title, cobbling together a collection of outtakes from their debut and padding them out with (sometimes multiple) remixes of old tracks like "Doin' Time," "April 29," and the Gwen Stefani duet, "Saw Red." There's a standout cover of Bob Marley's "Trenchtown Rock," but a lot of the rest feels like the incomplete discards and second (or third) choices they obviously were. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Raw Sublime.......2007-02-20

This album combines a small dosage of the catchy, addictive sound of the Self-titled with a big hit of fluid rhymes and deep pervasive beats of 40 Oz. and just the right amount of underground, truly raw, explicit sound of Robbin the Hood. The overall flow of the songs can disappoint, but the disc is of excellent use on the CDJ's...

5 out of 5 stars Ohhh man.......2006-12-12

This album sounds sublime... the weakest sublime album but still f*ckin amazing! I love it... good music lovers just get it.

1 out of 5 stars what the heck happened?.......2006-04-20

Dude, this CD has absolutely no good songs on it. The tracks just seem like they were tossed together on the spot without any practice first. Not to say I don't like Sublime though, because I have their debut and it's really good. This CD however is weak and ought not to be purchased.

2 out of 5 stars The inevitable leftovers - Buyer beware.......2006-01-17

The instinct to cash in on their well-earned reputation as a landmark band of the nineties was perhaps too much for the surviving members of Sublime to resist, hence this release.

Most of tracks presented here are sub-par versions of previously released material. It would be of interest to hardcore fans and others who are curious as to the evolution of their songs, but there is little else here to sustain interest over any period of time.

5 out of 5 stars I never get tired of this..........2005-11-17

I have been a Sublime fan for years and I have to say this is my favorite album. It's like an old friend, when you come across it you just get so happy! This is one of those cds you can take out at any time and listen to. Of all the songs, "Badfish" just makes me happy, and I find myself missing it often. I have owned this cd probably ten times and it keeps "disappearing". I am getting ready to order it again because I can't live without it! I am also getting "Sublime" since my husband wants that one again. We have really crappy friends... Not that I blame them. The only thing that I dislike about Sublime is that they won't be making any new albums. This album is worth the $12 or so, it's also worth buying over and over again.

Album Description

For 'The Third Hand', RJD2 seemingly abandons all the notions and titles that have been placed upon him. Underground hip-hop super-producer to many, virtuoso samplebased instrumental wizard to some, RJD2 embodies all of these things on "The Third Hand" but goes further. Recorded, performed, arranged, and produced entirely by himself in his basementstudio, RJD2 commands his trusty MPC 2000XL sampler/sequencer alongside a pantheon of analog synths, electric pianos and guitars, not to mention his own voice. Most notably, live instruments come in to play. The result is a cohesive pop album in the most classic sense , a sound more akin to Phoenix than, say, Prefuse 73. In essence, this is RJD2's entrance into the pantheon of enigmatic songwriter/producers (see Jon Brion, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder) capable of creating a record of rich songwriting, complex arrangements, and clever production.

I love this album. Like Brandon McComber, I bought this CD from Best Buy, wanting to support indie music, and expecting some great hip-hop (It was in the hip-hop section after all). While I agree, that this album definitly doesn't belong in the hip-hop section, I was smart enough not to make the same mistake Brandon did. DO NOT HIT THE SKIP BOTTON! If you have a 10second attention span, I recomend you try your local Clear Channel stations. Please give this album the listen that it deserves. Work it Out, is my favorite track from The Third Hand.

4 out of 5 stars Change is good. I like an artist that takes chances........2007-04-27

If you liked the vocal tracks on RJD2's sophmore effort 'Since Last We Spoke' and were drawn in by the haunting voice singing "Making Days Longer" and "Through The Walls", you probably will like this new album. It would come as neither shock nor surprise to you that RJ might want to produce an album of mostly vocal tracks, officially presenting his singing/lyric writing abilities. Fans up to this point will attest to his talent previously affirmed as a DJ/muscian/performer/producer.

It might be seen as a natural progression to think that 'Deadringer' was an album with mostly rap collaborations and a few instrumentals, 'Since Last We Spoke' was an album with mostly instrumentals and a few vocal tracks, so 'The Third Hand' is an album with mostly vocal tracks. However you might react emotionally to the singing or lyrics, the music and production value is consistent with what has been presented previously on RJD2 albums.

Wondering how you'll feel about the album? I think it safe to say listening to the Amazon song clips should be sufficient to polarize anyone's emotions about liking/purchasing this album.

It is interesting to note that XL Recordings not Definitive Jux "bought" this album but I suppose this effort is closer in category with the likes of other XL alumni. Chiefly, Badly Drawn Boy and Thom Yorke. Slightly, The White Stripes and Ratatat.

3 out of 5 stars What went wrong?.......2007-04-24

I love RJD2. I actually saw him 2 nights ago at first ave. in minneapolis. He put on a hell of a show complete with a live band. The best part was after the show them man hopped directetly off the stage and took pictures and talked to anyone and everyone who wanted to. I got several pics and asked him some questions and the man couldnt be anymore of a gentleman.

Now we come to this, it pains me to say this alot but this album is very very below average. We all have a standard of what we expect RJ to come to and he doesnt even come close. RJ needs to go back to his roots and keep his voice OFF his tracks!!!

2 out of 5 stars Wow. This is not what I expected at all...........2007-04-13

It's not like the album is bad. It's just not the RJD2 that we all knew and loved not so long ago. It's definitely pop. A blend of Jon Brion and (you'll hate me for saying it) Badly Drawn Boy. Both those artists are great, but RJD2 what have you done?!

2 out of 5 stars Mistakes We Knew We Were Making.......2007-04-12

I had the good fortune of going to college during the prime days of the Columbus, Ohio hip-hop scene, so not only have I been a fan of RJD2's almost since the beginning, I used to go see him spin on a weekly basis. That being said, I can tell you this album is exactly the sort of music he's always wanted to make. The only problem I have is the songs aren't very good.

No one's going to argue RJ's proficiency as a beat composer or producer. He's also shown a high degree of competency in the art of creating a song. However, none of that skill is on display on "The Third Hand." It's not that the music is horribly offensive or that the songs lack structure, it's that he foolishly chose to build the songs around his vocals. RJ's vocal abilities flat out suck. As wonderful a producer and as nice as a guy as he is, it pains me to say that, but it's true. His vocals are frequently out of tune - bordering on screeching - and are horrifically off key. His vocals sound like a ferret is being tortured, and while I don't know what that sounds like, I don't imagine I'm far off.

I'm all for artists experimenting and taking chances, it's why I bought the CD after reading bad review after bad review. However, what artists like RJ and his contemporary, DJ Shadow, don't realize is over the years their stage names have taken on a certain branding by their audiences. Just as I wouldn't expect to pick up a Jack Johnson CD and expect to hear him singing Frank Sinatra songs, I don't expect to pick up a RJD2 CD and expect to hear RJ screeching and wailing for an hour.

Honestly, if, hypothetically speaking, Jack Johnson wants to sing Frank Sinatra like songs or if RJ wants to sing folk songs, I'm fine with that. I just expect the new material to be on the same level of quality as the songs they've been putting out for the past 10 years. In RJ's case, the songs on "The Third Hand" aren't as high in quality as any of the work he's put out in the past. RJ, we know you're capable of more than this. "Making Days Longer" off of "Since We Last Spoke" is a beautiful song that will stand the test of time as long as "The Horror" or any other song you've made in the past, but nothing on "The Third Hand" even hints at the genius that was on display in either one of the former two songs.

Album Description

They say third time's a charm, and Enter The Worship Circle meets our expectations! With eclectic melodies tailored by the voices of Ben and Robin Pasley, Barry & Michelle Patterson and Kate Hurley this album is a worthy continuation of the insanely popular Worship Circle series. The recording is as live and rambunctious as any before, and the feel of being in a living room surrounded by hand drums and people who love God is tangible...

This cd is amazing!!!! The best one yet. Some of the most beautiful worship songs that I have everr heard!!

5 out of 5 stars Third Circle = the best yet.......2004-06-06

One could only imagine my excitement when two of my favorite bands, Waterdeep & 100 Portraits, joined together to make a worship album; I wasn't disappointed. The "First Circle" was an amazing experience, but it didn't end there. 100 Portraits gave us another Circle, which was also good but not as good as the first. Now, with the "Third Circle," Ben & Robin Pasley (100 Portraits) have joined thier incredible talent and rhythms with Kate Hurley and Berry & Michelle Patterson to record the most incredible worship album I have ever heard. The songs are extremely intimate as only guitars and hand percussion instruments are used, but they are also filled with life, moving the listener into the presence of God. This is a must have album! Finally, some inovative Christian music that is setting standards instead of simply copying redundant mainstream junk.

5 out of 5 stars Does Not Disappoint.......2003-12-31

Yes, like you, I was hesitant to purchase the third installment of Enter The Worship Circle. Yes, like me, you will purchase this album and not be disappointed.

The First installment blew me away (four stars). The Second was good and had it's moments but was redundant in places to the first (3 stars). The Third installment might actually be as good, if not better than the first, because it manages to match the first in emotional punch and lyrical beauty yet retains a freshness it shouldn't have as a sequel but does.

If this album doesn't make you get up and dance and sing along then you probably have died and NOT gone to heaven.

4 out of 5 stars music is a candle, is a portal to God.......2003-11-20

This CD was mailed to me right here in the middle of a stressful time in art college- I have escaped into it every evening, and even brought it to listen to in my studio. I am an avid follower of the Pasley's, and their hearts, and the hearts of the other people on this album are so sincere and beautful. Tracks 5, 11, and 14 are my favorites!

Album Description

RJD2's much talked about and praised new album, "The Third Hand" is now available in the same sequence as an all instrumental album. Underground hip-hop super-producer to some, virtuoso sample-based instrumental wizard to others, RJD2 embodies all these things on this release, but placates none who seek more of the same. The result is a cohesive pop album in the most classic sense, a sound more akin to Phoenix than Prefuse 73. It pains me to say that. But these instrumentals are much better than the versions with vocals. Sorry dude, but you're not a great singer. "Clean Living" was awesome. But that doesn't mean you have to sing on every track. Stick to what you do best: making beats. For other vocalists. Or, as is the case here and on most of his best older songs, instrumentals. If you didn't like 'The Third Hand' before, give this one a shot. I consider it the better album.

4 out of 5 stars Great album except for the Title Track.......2000-05-02

The third man theme orchestration on the first track is simply awful (bad enough to be humorous)! The rest of the CD is delightful with just zither with accordian accompanyment. There might be other instruments, but I'm not sure. Karras used a zither that was especially built for him which produced a very full and rather aggressive sound. He also repeatedly plucked the strings in many songs to produce a sustaining tone. I find that style of playing very interesting. "The Third Man" is one of my favorite movies. The opening credit showing Karras' hands playing the zither is, in my opinion, one of the great graphic achievements of that era. Most of the album is made-up of various themes from Strauss and operetta strung together. Each track may contain 3-5 themes. My favorite theme is #2 on track 21. The good original analog recording is nicely transferred to digital with little noise and appropriate dynamic range. Listening to this recording is like taking a quick trip to one of my favorite cities--Vienna!

5 out of 5 stars A great new piano played by a lesser known master.......2004-12-31

I wish David Stanhope were as well known as the man who bought the first of these monster pianos, Rowen Atkinson, a.k.a. Mr. Bean, alias Black Adder. This 2.9 meter, 97 key, four on the floor (pedals) aircraft carrier is the Stuart & Sons concert grand. Stanhope puts the mighty Stuart through its paces on this one. And mighty like a rose, not just power. These are difficult and lovely selections, rarely performed, all linked to more popular pieces; and yet genuine in their own right.

4 out of 5 stars (No title)........2000-12-07

The pianist here, David Stanhope, claims to only 'occasionally finds time to practice the piano.' How blessed he is then, with the natural ability to tackle and conquer some of the most formidable peaks of the virtuoso repertoire with an ease and grandeur that brings shame and bewilderment to even the most celebrated pianists. One notable instance, the Godowsky Passacaglia, which Horowitz gave up in despair, claiming he needed at least six hands to perform it. And what a massive and masterly aplomb Stanhope brings to the work, especially in the final pages; although it seems to lack in some of the mind-numbing inspiration apparent in Carlo Grante Music & Arts recording. The Busoni, if not intimate, is loyal and joyous. In the Chopin-Godowsky , every intricacy is spun off with dazzling fluency, but there isn't the wit one usually associates with our beloved Popsie. The Liszt Beethoven 8th symphony transcription really is Allegro vivace con brio; it's exuberant and taken at an incredible clip, though lacking in clarity... An excellent disc, really, even if inward-looking tenderness is seemingly substituted with meer technique. But what a meer technique it is!

5 out of 5 stars Great performances on a superb instrument.......2000-11-19

David Stanhope is a conductor, composer, and sometime pianist. It seems a little counterintuitive that someone so obviously occupied with other matters would choose to record a disk of some of the heaviest knucklecrunchers in the repertoire. But make no mistake -- the performances are hardly those of a part-time pianist. This release features a recording on the fascinating Stuart piano, designed by Australian Wayne Stuart. The Stuart's timbre is immediately distinctive -- the sound is light, but satisfyingly full-bodied, giving an exemplary clarity to this densely detailed music.

The disk opens with what may be one of the best performances of the Bach-Busoni St Anne ever recorded. Stanhope's performance has an exciting drive to it -- differentiating it from Demidenko's somewhat ponderous version -- but it never sounds rushed as Geoffrey Madge's does in his Dante release. The Stuart really suits this work; one hears, for example, the trills in the prelude that are often obscured. We then are indulged with a selection of Godowsky's Studies on the Chopin Etudes, each of which is prefaced with the Chopin original. These are rendered with style and aplomb and, once again, the piano sounds great. Following is the huge Godowsky Passacaglia. Stanhope, both in his performance and his notes, makes light of its fearsome reputation, breasting its big challenges and closing with weighty, sonorous chords. The disk closes with the Beethoven-Liszt Symphony No. 8. As Stanhope points out in his notes, conducting tradition often causes some of the tempi in this work to be a bit slack, especially in the first movement. He makes his point tellingly with a thrilling first movement, and backs up to do the same in the finale -- while missing none of the inner movements' wit or charm. This is a very enjoyable disk. I invite you to listen to it, and then call Tall Poppies and urge them to commission another disk from this fascinating musician.

There have been trad ska releases since 1999, but few have been any good. The lack of output has made ska fans cling to the few new releases like they were god's gift. As such, ordinarily bland and forgettable trad albums, like the latest Chris Murray and Go Jimmy Go, have been held in glorious high esteem. Well, the latest from the Allstonians (their first in six years) is something for the ska fan to really cheer about. It's so vibrant, positive, and enthusiastic that it practically warps you back to the early 90s. The album explodes with the jubilant One Day, and it takes off from there. Even the instrumentals are memorable -- they're fun and energetic and kept under three minutes. With the exception of a too-goofy hidden track and Sean Connery (containing dopey banter behind a decent instrumental -- all Allstonians albums have to have a song like that), all the tunes are danceable and enjoyable. Best vocal tracks are One Day and the bouncy Fear & Loathing; the best instrumentals are Aldo Moro, and Mikey Dee and its dub counterpart Clockwork Dub. But the album is solid from beginning to end, and is, in my opinion, the first truly great trad ska album since the Bluebeats Live & Learn (2000).

3 out of 5 stars pretty decent.......2003-08-28

Ska has gone downhill, a very steep hill. We all knew this would happen after MTV came out with their own variation of the music, but I never thought it would have effected my favorite bands. Over the past few years very few ska cds have been released, and 95% of them have been pretty weak efforts. Easy Big Fella, Skavoovie and the Epitones, and now the Allstonians are the three that stand out the most. All three albums are worth buying to support some great bands and what is left of the scene, but don't expect greatness.

One thing I have to mention is that whoever designs the covers for The Allstonians CDs does a very good job at capturing the essence of their music. The gritty, b&w, smoky lounge feel to their first album. The Allston Beat's rainy somber college town atmosphere. And now Bottom's Up with a super fruity logo and floating band member heads on yellow background. It gives you a happy bouncy feel, which this album certainly does. Though happy/bouncy is very characteristic for ska bands, the Allstonians used to have a very unique sound that was all their own and now they sound like any other mediocre ska band.

I recommend this to true ska fans though, there are a couple gems that are reminiscent of the Allstonians I used to know and love. At least they didn't try to change with the times like the living tragedies that are Lets Go Bowling, The Pietasters, and numerous others.

As for ska bands that are still putting out excellent music, check out the new Slackers. I think they are the only band that hasn't lost inspiration and only get better with time.

In any case, buy this now. Support the Allstonians and maybe they'll release a better album next time.

5 out of 5 stars Rock On Ladies!!.......2000-10-07

On Sept. 2 2000, I saw these women in concert at the Kimo Theater in Albuqerque New Mexico. They performed songs from the CD Inner Ear. What could I do but buy the cd as soon as the performance was over. These women put every ounce of energy into each song and it shows! Inner ear is rock-n-roll with a message. Listen up-play it loud!!

5 out of 5 stars These Women Rock!.......2000-09-21

How refreshing to listen to a group of women musician/songwriters who play from their hearts and aren't afraid to speak their minds! The CD has a range of music from soft ballads to "Rock-Out" rock 'n' roll. The lyrics are compelling as well as relevant to situations many of us have experienced. If you like the music of the Indigo Girls or Melissa Etheridge, this CD is a must. If you are ready to try something new, I recommend Third Hand's Inner Ear.
