Album Description

This CD features Olivia Tailfeathers and the Kainai Grassland Singers, a female vocal group from the Blood Tribe in Western Canada. 'Ninihkssin Song' is a fusion of the singers' love for their traditional Blackfoot culture and the experiences they encounter in modern society.

Where Have These Women Been All This Time?!.......2006-07-03

I stumbled across this album in "Spirit of the Red Horse" while trying to kill some time at an airport, and right away, I was fascinated. Now that I've bought it, I cannot seem to take it out of my CD player. These women have the most beautiful, pure voices, and there is so much enthusiasm and love for their culture in their songs! Often I find myself singing or chanting along with them, especially on the call and response of "Buffalo Song" which is track two, and "Kitsikakomimm", track seven. The atmosphere they weave is very good for balancing yourself inwardly and finding your own natural rhythm, and is almost hypnotic in places. They are proof that you do not need loud steel drums, bass, or electric guitars to make music; they do an outstanding job with nothing more than the natural, unintrusive sound of drums, rattles, and their own voices.

I do not know if they are a relatively new group, but I'm wondering where they have been all this time, and I'm very much hoping that they will come out with more albums in the future. In the meantime, this one will no doubt have an honored place among my collection. It has earned it.
