3 out of 5 stars Please SHUT UP.......2007-02-20

Why doesn't he just shut up and make an instrumental HELMET album, concentrating on the guitars and super rhythms instead? I have always felt that HELMET has held back somewhat from something really incredible; Page's solos sound like NO ONE else I can think of, and he should focus on that difference. I mean, seriously, does this music even NEED any lyrics or singing? I don't think so, personally, and man, I thought he sucked as a vocalist before (although I guess it was tolerable, maybe on songs like Overrated and such), but he is unlistenable now. Totally, almost as bad as Billy Corgan, and too, too similar, with the nasal pinching delivery. Please, release another album and just do it without any singing, like a Don Caballero or something. Rely on your awesome guitar playing and metal composition to come to the fore and blow minds. I would like to turn on the windshield wipers and wipe away that horrible shrill ratty voice from this good, heavy music. It just gets in the way, and now that HELMET is not in the spotlight anymore, but has an established following, they should be able to do whatever they want....assuming hopefully that someone must have forced him to sing this way, that is....I hope that's the only excuse for it, for the sake of their artistic integrity....

3 out of 5 stars good music... terrible singing.......2007-02-03

What the hell happened to Page Hamilton's voice? He used to have a great cathartic clean voice and a growly scream, and now it's like he's regressed into a bad 80's metal shrill. The music's good, but I can't buy this album cause he sounds like a tweener.

5 out of 5 stars Similar to Meantime, But Still Great.......2007-01-04

I've been a fan of Helmet since 1991. As pointed out by Mike (Death to the Metal Purists), the band reenlisted Wharton Tiers, collaborator on Strap It On and Meantime, Helmet's best albums. That accounts for the similarity of sound between those earlier albums and this one. I was startled by the first eight or so bars of 'Brand New' on Monochrome, because it is uncannily similar to the start of 'Turned Out' on Meantime, down to the time signature of the opening riff.

That being said, this album rocks in its own right. I really like the opening track, 'Swallowing Everything', and the guitar solos are vintage Page Hamilton, violent and beautiful.

If you have ever been into Helmet, I would recommend this album. I would also recommend it if you like heavy music, and your tastes also include Explosions in the Sky, Pelican, System of a Down, or Tool.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Album..........2006-09-05

This album does not sound like typical helmet at all, in fact it almost sounds like an entirely different band. I totally understand why A.Miller II trashed this album, since he is a fan of the original helmet stuff. I think Page has moved on since meantime and betty. Meantime was airtight and very exciting for it's time, but every year I listen to it, it sounds softer and has less steam in my opinion (it might be because it is an old recording...but). It was seriously amazing for it's time and resonated for over a decade but it has lost steam and I think Page has done the right thing in going in a new direction. I love the new "whining" sound of the vocals, it sounds more real, diverse and it's more in control. The growling vocals of meantime are almost funny to me now and hard to take seriously, I have a sneaking suspicion Page feels the same way since he does this a few times here and there in the new album in a way that almost sounds like he is mocking himself, which is funny.

Actually there are two reasons I give this four instead of five stars: first of all, I think page should have just started another band, because this doesn't really sound like helmet and I think it's almost like false advertising (upsetting to hardcore fans of the old stuff) and second of all I think a couple of the songs were not good enough to be on this album. Gone, 410, howl, and unlisted could have been excluded in my opinion and I think it's odd that Page put "gone" up as the main song of this album...Clearly "Money Shot" is the best. This is a good album with a few kinks, and the major drawback is that it doesn't really sound like helmet very much. I mean, it doesn't sound like typical helmet and many of the original members are gone. This is Page's perogative however and he has a right to use the helmet name. He is an amazing writer and musician and even a really interesting thinker and I am interested to see what, if anything, will come after this...

5 out of 5 stars another great cd!.......2006-08-31

this has a lot of strap it on type stuff going on as well as some slow melodic stuff. his vocal style has changed just a bit. i love it. it is helmet without a doubt. track 2 has that total meantime/strap it on feel. the noisy strap it on stlye guitar solos are back too. if you like helmet you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars "At Their Best" maybe, "Best Of" not really.......2001-04-02

This is in fact an (inexplicably resequenced) re-release of The Set's first two classic albums, both from 1980: Strange Boutique (tracks 1 to 11) and Love Zombies (tracks 12 to 20).

Call it Art-Punk, call it Neo-Psychedelia, call it refreshingly intelligent pop, call it anything you want, but if you haven't got it BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars The Monochrome Set Are Back.......2000-06-28

After disbanding in the late 1980s, the Monochrome Set are back again with the same great style rendered somewhat more mature. This album contains some of their finest material. One to treasure for years.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Liberating New Wave.......1999-05-10

I listened to these songs 15 years ago in Santiago, Chile. I didn't know who they where then, it was just an unnamed tape. Ten years later one word still remained in my mind: "monochrome set". I looked it up and I have finally found the source. This band has one of the most intriguing, refreshing and liberating new wave sounds of the era. It makes you want to play and experiment. ATU/99

    Product Description

This album was inspired by a work by ... Peter Schickele (aka PDQ Bach) called Monochrome III written for 9 clarinets. On this album, Bryan Crumpler performs all parts. Other works include Yvonne Desportes' "Characters for Clarinet Sextet", "Adagio Expressive" from Gerard Bertouille's Concertino for Clarinet Quartet, Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings arr. for Solo Clarinet & Clarinet Choir" and Desire Dondeyne's "Clarinet Symphony for Clarinet Sextet". "Characters" is a 6 movement work designed to highlight the 6 major instruments, each representing a particular character. The Eb Soprano is the Welcomer... Contrabass Clarinet is the Loner... Bass Clarinet is the Cool Cat, or the Nonchalant... Alto Clarinet is the Hothead ... 2nd Bb Clarinet is the Dreamer, and finally... 1st Bb Clarinet is the Joker. The next piece, Bertouille's Concertino for Clarinet Quartet is not really published. Bertouille's music is represented by the Center for Belgian Music Documentation, which has released a score of what looks like copies of a pencil draft of the piece. The bass clarinet part was written in Bass Clef. The "Adagio Expressive" - the 1st of this two movement work - was just too beautiful NOT to record. Barber's Adagio for Strings was originally scribed by Lucien Cailliet for a full sized clarinet choir with Ab and Eb soprano clarinets as the solo/melody. Crumpler modified this version for Solo Bb Clarinet to warm it up a bit. Dondeyne's "Clarinet Symphony" is the finale and is a standard 3 movement work. The piece, published by Billaudot in France, was dedicated to clarinet master Guy Dangain. Although the works are not "new" and were composed and published 1 to 2 decades ago, the album is actually a world premiere recording of all of these works.

      Album Description

After nearly a year of overseas collaborations, the duo known as HMB is poised to have their debut offering unleashed to the world. Comprised of Daniel Myer (Haujobb and Cleen/Cleaner) and Victoria Lloyd (Claire Voyant), the two set out to create a new boundary for experimentation. Fusing elements of EBM, techno and trance with the elegant vocal styling of Victoria and the distinctive programming of Daniel has made this album a beautifully crafted masterpiece. To complement an already solid combination, the pair also enlisted the help of Dennis Ostermann (ISC and Controlled Fusion) and Vanessa Briggs (Haujobb) to add yet another twist to the equation. Tracks such as "wanted" and "this fire" will be guaranteed floor fillers at clubs throughout the country. Their debut release, Great Industrial Love Affairs will appeal to the fans of Haujobb, Delerium, Collide and Switchblade Symphony and will not disappoint even the toughest of critics.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, super-cool industrial beats.......2005-10-11

This is a great album! combining cool industrial sounds with both male and female vocals across fourteen excellent tracks. Personal favourites include "everything", which is a beautiful but hard-hitting industrial epic and "this fire", one of the more poppy, but still wonderfully crafted songs. Buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars The dark beauty in the machine.......2002-07-27

When this project was initially underway, Victoria Lloyd sent me some of the demo tracks and I knew immediately that this was going to be a classic among EBM/Industrial dance fans. The enigmatic Daniel Meyer worked with members of Claire Voyant on some of the songs as well as a few other notable music figures in the underground, in order to tweak some of the best performances out of the combined group.

Although this is a slight change of pace of Meyer's previous works, it nonetheless creates a new benchmark for the artist to demonstrate that it is possible to skirt with various genres while still remaining loyal to fans from other work and genres.

One of the long standing debates in the underground scene has been the contention that Goth music hasn't evolved or that EBM/Industrial/ Synthpop has taken over too much of the Goth fan's attention.

HMB did the seemingly impossible. They combined the morose and forlorn emotional tides of gothic music, wrapped it up with frothy electro/industrial pulse beats and skewered it through many vocal intonations. Simply put, this CD is a brilliant piece of work that crossed the genre boundaries, signifying that Goth music and industrial music can in fact have a great marriage when enough forethought is given to its construction.

Daniel Meyer is to be lauded for the accomplishment of delivering a new body of work to his already well known classic works with Haujobb. Meyer brought out best sounds from the various artists who contributed to this project and simply disproved that Goth music is a static entity, unable to develop or venture beyond its tonal old school qualities from the 1980's.

Victoria Lloyd has had quite a following from her work with the Claire Voyant, and simply demonstrated that she is not a singular range vocalist. Her sounds can go from smooth as silk to seductively wicked in the span of a breath. Lloyd simply seduces, soothes, caresses and entices vocally, while Meyer is the musical whipping master, driving listeners into a frenzy. Along with other Claire Voyant band mates, Chris Ross and Benn Fargen, the additional evolvement of their abilities is simply brought to an innovative height to a whole new audience through the genius of Meyer.

Do seek out this recording if you like industrial dance music. Also if you are prone to Goth music with a bit more bounce to it, this should become a welcome mélange for your collection.

This has got to be one of my all time fav albums. The fact that I say "albums" tells you how long I've had a copy. These guys were an amazing breath of fresh and wacky britishness and it's too bad they never made a bigger splash this side of the pond. If you're looking for something just a bit whimisical, a bit mocking, but oh so proper-this is the album for you. I promise, you won't find another like it. (Pair it with an early Clash album and you've got a nice surreal range of Brit rock from a bygone era.)
