Brother Dave Gardner contains multitudes. For starters, this Southern comedian was also an ordained Baptist minister as well as being a drummer and a singer. Judging from this pair of albums from 1959 and 1960, his live shows were amazing performance pieces. His truly expansive routines included Shakespeare parodies, swinging musical passages, and funny digressions. There's also room here for cool-cat philosophizing, riffs on outer space, and preacherlike inflections. Brother Dave can spellbind the listener with his freewheeling rambles one minute and tell a riveting story the next. The routines feature countless hilarious voices and characters, not to mention jaw-dropping vocal sound effects. Incredible charisma and warmth imbue the entire CD. Brother Dave was an artist who was liable to draw from just about everything and anything and somehow make it all work. It's hard to imagine what '50s audiences made of this hipster from Tennessee. Country music legend Chet Atkins produced both of the original records. --Fred Cisterna

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind humorist from the 60's.......2007-05-12

It was gift for my Father. He saw Brother Dave in person several times years ago. Dad enjoyed the gift, for the old LP's he had were so scratched from wear, one could barely understand them. Brother Dave came along at a time when segregation was still in vogue and political correctness wasn't heard of. His stories might offend some, but there is no cursing and no one is a target of tastless humor.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Gardner.......2007-04-11

Brother Dave is one of the best comedians ever. His humor is a little deep but is still the best. If you want good clean humor, this is the man to get.

4 out of 5 stars Origins of "different" humor.......2007-01-16

Takes me back to the times my family spent listening to comedy that was, unknown to them, over the kid's heads.

3 out of 5 stars Rejoice dear hearts / Kick thy own self.......2005-09-05

I was a fan of "Brother Dave", back when he was plying the clubs. I owned most, if not all of his "ROCA Alblims" that over time disappeared. I was happy to get these CD's and have enjoyed them greatly. I look forward to getting others that are available. His humor, imagination, sense of reality and use of our language is not equaled by today's crop of comedians.

5 out of 5 stars Rich in Southern Humor, this CLASSIC is Timeless!.......2004-01-11

Having not heard a Brother Dave recording in many, many years, I was delighted to run across this CD. WOW!!! Amazingly STILL FUNNY, this guy was truly an original. His rich southern humor was on the cutting edge in the late 50's, yet it remains timeless. Had me actually laughing out loud. The characters he created, the weird sounds he made, the "think about it" jokes should tickle most everyone's funny bone...even if they "ain't from the south"!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Even without his highly regarded symphonies, various instrumental works, and monumental and influential work on the revision of the English Hymnal, Vaughan Williams would have made a major impact on 20th-century music with his many original choral works and his folksong arrangements. In fact, Vaughan Williams's folksong-collecting work was one of the more important contributions ever made to English music. This disc offers a wonderful collection of a cappella choral pieces, including some of Vaughan Williams's finest folksong arrangements. Besides "Ca' the yowes," "Full fathom five," "Greensleeves," and "The Turtle Dove," the program includes rarely heard masterpieces such as "Alister McAlpine's Lament," which brilliantly captures the mood of the song with serene, sensual harmonies and gently flowing vocal lines. The Holst Singers seem born to this music, giving us the music's full flavor without ever overplaying it. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-21

Ralph Vaughan-Williams loved "the lilt of the chorus at the music hall...children dancing to a barrel organ, the rousing fervor of a Salvation Army Hymn, St.Paul's and a great choir singing at one of its festivals...the Welshmen striking up one of their own hymns...the cries of street pedlars, the factory girls singing their sentimental songs." This disc somehow reflects all of these influences. I think it makes him a true folksong specialist!!!The music included herein covers the whole of the composer's long career-from "The Willow Song"written when he was eighteen, to "Heart's Music",composed three years before his death at the age of eighty-six. The Holst Singers along with the two soloists:Ian Bostridge (tenor) and Michael George (bass)are very excellent in their renditions. The choir is perfection in balance, diction, ensemble and emotional content. Bostridge with his sweet and pure tenor almost moves one to tears especially in "Greensleeves" and "Ca'the yowes". And Michael George was also very moving in his solo:"Loch Lomond". It is as if the entire performing group were aware of a statement made by Vaughan-Williams before his death: "if the roots of your art are firmly planted in your own soil, and that soil has anything to give you, you may still gain the whole world and not lose your own souls."

5 out of 5 stars Songs that Never Fade.......2005-11-21

A selection of the best of RVW's folksong arrangements performed with insight and restraint by the Holst Singers, with help from soloists like the incomparable Ian Bostridge. Vaughan William's respect for these folksongs is evident in his exquisite settings, which reveal their depth and subtlety, without obscuring their simplicity.

This is a recording to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly, introspective, definitely the most soulful songs!.......2003-03-16

This collection of English and Scottish folk songs moved me to tears and made me experience a plethora of emotions over and over again. The beautiful melodies flowing from this CD conjure up melacholy, joy, sadness and wonder. They crystalise the most common human experiences and the mystery of existence into certain folksong idioms that, once listened to, will stick in your ears and stir your heart strings for a long time.

Salute to Vaughan Williams for documenting, preserving and arranging these gems of English and Scottish heritage. Holst singers performe splendidly. Their discipline and professionalism, and a sense of artistic direction shine through.

I highly recommend this CD along with John Rutter's "The Lark in the Clear Air" for all the sensitive people who take interest in classical music and traditional folk songs.

I wish I can give this CD 10 stars!

Suzanne Thomas's voice is remarkable within bluegrass, where for 30 years she's been central to bands like the Dry Branch Fire Squad and the Hotmud Family. She possesses no crystalline soprano or pretty soaring tone nor belting power exactly. Thomas has something else: an ache all around the edges, a tactile sense of emotion, the warmth and tremble marking depth of human feeling. Backing by contemporary bluegrassers IIIrd Tyme Out, the Lonesome River Band, the Seldom Scene, and the Dry Branch Fire Squad never overwhelms Thomas's delivery, which is most moving on the melancholy title track--an ode to Stephen Foster--and Robin and Linda Williams's "Leaving This Land." Her torchy take on "Miss the Mississippi and You" closes Thomas's solo debut, easily one of the year's best bluegrass offerings. --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting bluegrass album full of quality.......2003-05-10

By the time Suzanne recorded this album, she was a veteran of the bluegrass and old-time country music scene, having previously sung with the Hotmud family and the Dry branch fire squad.

Sweet sunny south, Just a few more days, Faded coat of blue, I have no mother now and are all over fifty years old and you don't them very often these days. Another song of comparable vintage, Miss the Mississippi and you, is better known, having been covered by Emmylou Harris, Crystal Gayle and others down the years.

We must have been out of our minds was a sixties country hit duet for George Jones and Melba Montgomery, while Louisiana woman Mississippi man was a seventies country hit duet for Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn.

The remaining songs are contemporary, including some co-written by Suzanne. Overall, this album has a variety of songs of different tempos, all performed to a high standard. If you enjoy traditional bluegrass, you should enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars silver toungue and gold plated lies.......2002-12-09

I heard this particular song by Suzanne Thomas on the recently released O SISTER CD. Absolutely enjoyed the vocal and music. I have yet to hear the balance of the album, however based on this single cut, I'm sure I'm not going to be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2000-04-17

I have had this CD for a couple of weeks and can't stop listening to it. The selection of music on this CD was obviously given a great deal of thought - excellent choices. Suzanne sings with a great deal of feeling in these songs and she and Ron Thomason together are hard to beat in this type of music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars IN MY TOP TEN OF 1998.......1999-02-04

This is a delicate and poetic CD that is often in my rotation. It's one of those CD's that can take repeated listens from start to finish. "Leaving This Land", the title track and "Faded Coat of Blue" are just a few of the songs that force me to stop what I'm doing and sit down to listen until they're finished. Thomas's voice can evoke such a sense of worn-out tiredness, such bittersweet sadness, yet on other songs, such as "Louisiana Man", she'll have you tapping your foot and dancing along with the joyous vocals. It's bluegrass, yes, but it's also folk, country-and wonderfully timeless in it's conveyance of emotion. I must confess to not having tremendous patience with a steady diet of bluegrass music, although I certainly own my share, but this CD rises above whatever label one would put upon it. If Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss are in your collection, you definitely need this. If they aren't, and you're looking to explore, buy this slice of Americana. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars "one classic delivery after another ~ Nat King Cole".......2005-01-12

"Dear Lonely Hearts" and "I Don't Want to Be Hurt Anymore" gives you 24 of the finest vocals by anyone in musical history...the sound is marvelous stereo...there should have been more like this, but this is it, so cherish the moment...listening to Nat though, is always great...he had a tenderness in his voice, completely flawless...he could never deliver a bad tune...his style and signature of making a song his own has never been duplicated...within this twofer album are songs of the day back in 1962 and 1964...some are timeless and remain classics, while others are songs that have never seen the light of day...but this release is a dream come true...more selections from the greatest entertainer of our time...cause Nat King Cole rules.

You can't go wrong with any of Cole's albums that are now on CD...both are excellent, many are hard-to-find and some not well known...highlights and stand outs are "ALL BYSELF", "ALL OVER THE WORLD", "MISS YOU", "IT'S A LONESOME OLD TOWN WHEN YOU'RE NOT AROUND", "OH, HOW I MISS YOU TONIGHT", "YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING", when it comes to interpretation and expertly performed, Nat is the master at his craft.

The one and only master of interpretation...no other singer in the business had the warmth that this man gave during a performance or recording session...along with Frank Sinatra, Cole built the Capitol Towers and brought them fame and fortune...Nat King Cole in my estimation did more for Capitol Records than any other recording artist of that time (and that my friend is saying something), but is the gospel.

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten "Classics" thrill again with the Cole treatment!.......2003-07-10

What a joy to hear that magnificent voice of Nat "King" Cole on this dual album CD. It makes one realize more and more what a treasure we had in that man.

DEAR LONELY HEARTS showcases the pure, measured voice of Nat performing some long lost classics like "Yearning (Just For You)", "Miss You" and "Oh How I Miss You Tonite" to Belford Hendricks fine arrangements and backed up by one of the best choruses in the business. You know, during the '60's, many of the great singers (Crosby, Sinatra, Como, Williams) recorded with the back up choruses of the Johnny Mann Singers and the Ray Charles Singers among others. Sadly, no one does that anymore. What a loss and a shame. Sadly, the art of good, pure singing waned in the '70's and after and has gradually gotten worse. Today, there are really only a handful of new "pure singers" (just great voices), unadulterated by the affectations of endless boring vocal "runs", poor voice quality and the incessant synthesized background music and drum machines. That small handful includes the wonderful Charlotte Church, Josh Groban, Jane Monheit and Diane Kral to name just a few. With the onset of "American Idol" I am seeing the gradual return of real singing and even more so on "American Juniors" and they are performing more standards.

I DON'T WANT TO BE HURT ANYMORE continues in the same great vein. Sadly, this was one of Nat's last albums but there is nary a trace of the illness that would take him in 1965.

I would rate this dual disc as prime Nat "King" Cole. Some would refer to it as "easy listening" but I would call it just great music performed by one of the industry's giants.

4 out of 5 stars Classy and Classic.......2003-01-16

I bought this CD because I couldn't find the song "I don't want to be hurt anymore" on any other CD, not even the hit collections. I wasn't disappointed by the track - it's the original recording and sounds great. I haven't listened to the rest of the CD very much, yet, but I would classify it as "essential." This is for NKC fans. There aren't many other hits on these albums. Although Nat sounds great. I would recommend buying this album just for the title track and to anyone who likes songs about lost love. NKC is a class act all the way, and this CD proves that.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT TWO FER from Capitol / EMI.......2000-11-11

If we could get Nat's "Cole Italiano" or any of his three Spanish albums on a collection like this, I'd be thrilled! Meantime, we have this great collection. We open with "DEAR LONELY HEARTS", with arrangements by the great Belford Hendricks. Hendricks gave us all the great charts on RAMBLIN' ROSE, which is the counterpart to this album. Some great ones here include "MISS YOU", something of a hit for the McGuire Sisters, "WHY SHOULD I CRY OVER YOU?", treated here with a slight swing tempo and "NEAR YOU", which should be a treat to those of us who only knew this great piece as an instrumental by Roger Williams. The lyrics fit perfectly, and Nat handles this (as anything he ever sang) with class and beauty. While the country/western sound is implied on all the sides here, its interesting to note that not all these songs are of the country and western vein. "LONESOME AND SORRY" does however, and its one of those "one more time!" kind of songs, where the group is arm and arm, singing at last call. The second half of this album contains more of those such songs, only with Ralp Carmichael arrangements. While not in the same class of Nelson Riddle or Gordon Jenkins, Carmichael always wrote excellent charts for Nat. Standouts here include "I'M ALONE BECAUSE I LOVE YOU", "DON'T YOU REMEMBER" and another "one more time" tune, the melodramatic "GO, IF YOU'RE GOING". The orchestras and choruses on all sides here frame Nat's voice perfectly, and considering these albums came late in the game for Nat, he is spectacular form. One of my favorite performers ever, and these albums further that. Listen and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Decided to check this one out..........2000-09-26

I wasn't familiar with any of the tunes (except one) that were on this 2-fer CD, DEAR LONELY HEARTS/I DON'T WANT TO BE HURT ANYMORE, but because I am a die-hard NKC fan I decided to buy it anyway to see how I would like it. It has its bright spots but I kept thinking to myself, "Where are Gordon Jenkins and Nelson Riddle (or even Dave Cavanaugh) when you need them?" Since I'm not a country fan, I found I didn't like some of the songs, but I was open-minded enough to at least listen. However, there were some tracks to take notice of: From DEAR LONELY HEARTS (1962), (which like its predecessor RAMBLIN' ROSE, had Belford Hendricks doing the orchestrations) it was the title song, "Miss You", " Oh How I Miss You Tonight", "Lonesome And Sorry", "My First And Only Lover" and "Who's Next In Line?" The last two songs don't sound like country at all to me. "My First And Only Lover" has tinges of early Motown, and "Who's Next In Line?" has an early '60s R&B feeling to it. (Which it should've, because it was co-written by Clyde Otis, who was responsible for hit R&B songs by Dinah Washington and Brook Benton.)

I DON'T WANT TO BE HURT ANYMORE (1964) continues the country/western theme with arranger and conductor Ralph Carmichael at the helm. Before I listened to it, I was hoping for maybe another jazzy Cole/Shearing-like project, or perhaps the lush TOUCH OF YOUR LIPS. (Carmichael was behind both of those wonderful albums.) As with DEAR LONELY HEARTS, there are some songs that are worth putting on repeat, such as "I Don't Want To Be Hurt Anymore", "You're My Everything", "I Don't Want To See Tomorrow", "Was That The Human Thing To Do?" and "Road To Nowhere". The other songs will have to grow on me because I really wasn't feeling them when I played them the first time. Nat sounds great as always on both albums, even though by the time he made I DON'T WANT TO BE HURT ANYMORE he was already very ill, but you'd never know it. Because it was Nat I gave it four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and beautiful CD.......2002-11-09

I was lucky enough to sing in the St. James Cathedral Choir the year we recorded this CD. While they were often demanding recording sessions, the music is still some that I've never heard done better. The Biebl "Ave Maria" (track 11), with Howard's tenor solo can still move me to tears with it's soul-wrenching beauty, and the Bruckner "Agnus Dei" (track 8) is divine (just to name my favorites). While the choir has an amazing blend, it did not end up a homogeniged sound like many other large choirs. The listener really gets to hear the minute details of the music and dynamics that make this music a spiritual epihany.

    5 out of 5 stars Glorious Music.......2002-07-02

This is a stunning musical treat. The music is beautiful and varied. The Biebl 'Ave Maria', alone, is worth the CD. Highly recommended for choral and pipe organ lovers.
