If the voice sounds familiar, that may be because a couple of tracks have been featured on The O.C., while Frou Frou's "Let Go" appeared in Garden State. (Frou Frou is a collaboration between Heap and producer Guy Sigsworth.) Her sophomore release, after a UK-only debut, is a fine showcase for the singer/songwriter's swooping vocals. Her style, which incorporates layers of multi-tracking, lies somewhere between Sinead O'Connor's banshee howl and Jem's more delicate musings. There's more of a groove to her ouvre, however. At times, she almost sounds like Norway's Annie--by way of Kate Bush. The overall effect is plush and luxurious, if occasionally generic (a more stripped-down approach would really allow that instrument to shine). The one song that doesn't quite fit the electro-pop pattern is the vocoder-saturated "Hide and Seek," in which Heap enters Laurie Anderson territory (specifically 1982's "O Superman"). It's a risk that pays off, although its placement midway through the recording threatens to throw the balance off. (It would have made more sense at the end.) Aside from writing and singing, the multi-talented musician also recorded and produced Speak for Yourself. --Kathleen C. FennessyCustomer Reviews:
Rich, Passionate, and Fun.......2007-07-09
...marvelously expressive and sensual audio experience painted largely with two pallettes of nearly infinite range - electronic instrumentation, and Imogen's incredible voice.
Let me try to describe that voice:
-Her inhales and exhales are an important part of the performance and adds to the sensuality.
-Wonderful layering of harmonic and accent tracks.
-The rhythms are perfectly timed.
-Passionate, erotic, angelic.
And the lyrics are worthy of the sounds.
I always wonder about the people behind the music, including the impact of the producer. Listening to "Speak" (produced by Imogen) seemed to imply that Guy Sigsworth's contribution to "Details" may not have been as sig-nificant (I love puns), or perhaps it was very sig-nificant, and what she learned from him she incorporated into "Speak."
However, I have also since listened to Imogen's "I Megaphone," which is entirely more free spirited and undisciplined, and I did not enjoy it as much. This gave me the impression that Guy Sigsworth's contribution to "Details" and perhaps by inspiration, to "Speak," might have been much bigger than I imagined. Who knows.
I do know this - Imogen Heap is a huge talent, worthy of your time and money, regardless of the production style she's using to express herself.
Terrific, joyful and uplifting.......2007-07-01
Heap is a talent to be reckoned with and I can only expect more wonderful sounds to come. The album I am reviewing here is full of delights on almost every single track. I have listened to it at least 4 times now and it continues to grow in my estimation with each play. What a tremendous joy it is to listen to so much light and harmony. Richly rewarding.

Avenue Q will only fuel the frustration of those who think that Broadway has given up on sophisticated entertainment geared to adults. "Whatever happened to Cole Porter's witty rhymes and mature subject matter?" they'll say. Well, it's hard to deny that Avenue Q's main frame of reference is Sesame Street and that its humor can be very broad--yes, there's profanity and puppet sex. But the show also displays heart ("The More You Ruv Someone" typically begins with "Why can't people get along?") and a pretty satisfying zany streak. Musically, the score is rooted in 1970s pop, with nods to the aforementioned Sesame Street. The excellent cast, dominated by John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo, does it justice, milking the humorous numbers for all they're worth and finding pathos in the more straightforward ones. Not bad for a childish show. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Laurie Berkner's Victor Vito is a 22-song giggle-fest for the under-7 crowd. Witness "The Goldfish," one of 16 originals on the former educator's third album, in which a bunch of fishies find themselves lathering up in the shower and pedaling furiously on bicycles until it dawns on them that their species doesn't do that sort of thing. And there's the title tune, which finds Victor Vito and Freddie Vasco snacking on a burrito with Tabasco and then tipping the hot stuff on their rice and beans and rutabagas and collard greens before Victor dives into a plate of spaghetti with Freddie. Loopy takes on classics like "O Susannah" round out the acoustic-guitar-driven drollery, and after both "Shakin' Down the Sugar" and an ode to feeling crazy enough to jump in the soup, the last cut, "Goodnight," is a welcome wind down. Berkner blurs the way too distinct line between goofiness and hipness with major aplomb, and this album's simple production, combined with her playful singing voice, seals the deal. Victor Vito is unwaveringly victorious in its friendly, laugh-a-minute mission. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

"America's First Tribal Love-Rock Musical," went the advertising, and nobody could argue with that. Hair opened on Broadway in 1968 and immediately became a smash, although no one could quite discern what it was about. Something like, "War is bad, drugs are good, racism bites the big one, and nudity is nice." Although all these sentiments are expressed on this album which, like the show, has not dated well, the quality of the music makes it forgiveable. The songs weren't really rock, but they accomplished what all good pop songs set out to do; stick in the craw. In fact, several of its tracks later became hits for pop acts, including "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" (The Fifth Dimension), "Hair" (The Cowsills), and "Good Morning Starshine" (Oliver). --Dawn EdenCustomer Reviews:

This is pure listening enjoyment. Not one bad song is on this one. Whether you are in your car or sitting at home with a glass of Scotch(my favorite!) this is one that will not disappoint. Larry Carlton shines on guitar as always and the keyboard work of Bob James just sets it off. Nathan East adds his class on bass and the drum work of Harvey Mason is what makes these songs just flow together like a perfect day. Incredible sounds that will only have leave you saying at the end why did they only put nine songs on this.
Easy on your ears........2007-03-25
Cuts like Bob James' "Turnabout" and the breezy "Eastern Sky" epitomize what Fourplay is about.
Michael McDonald adds his distinctive vocals to the dramatic ballad "My Love's Leavin".
Check the flowing Jazz jaunt "Screenplay" on which James' playing is particularly expressive.
The band's trademark light touch and melodic focus characterise this set that is their finest for many years.

Africa minha, Africa nossa.......2006-03-26
Well, it's like a tradition... every two years there is a new Cesaria album and she is on a tour almost every year. And that really is something... "Rogamar" (www.rogamar.com) is her tenth album and if you are a fan of Cesaria you will find some songs very similar to older Cesaria songs... like you heard them somewhere before.
But if you aren't a fan of Cesaria (what are you waiting for?!:), this album is a good way to start likeing her. But maybe not the best. (in my opinion Sao Vicente or Cafe Atlantico are her best albums; but also check out the Anthology).
My favorite songs on the album are:
Africa Nossa - definietly the best song on the album. Very nice melody and great duo with a Senegal singer Ismaël Lô. Probably to become one of her classics. First single from the album.
Sombras Di Distino - beautiful ballad, very similiar to Cesaria's older ballads.
Um Pincelada - very nice song... again ballad but very beautiful song. Nice melody. Second single from the album.
Avenida Marginal - up tempo song. Great rythm.
Rogamar - nice song. Very nice melody.
Rosie - mid tempo song. Well I find this song a little bit different that other Cesaria songs. But I like it!
Mas Um Sonho - nice up tempo song. Feel good (Carnaval) song!
Travessa De Peixeira, Saiona D'Vinte Ano - also good songs.
Well, it seems that Cesaria just can't do wrong... very good album, great songs (Africa Nossa, Sombras Di Distino, Um Pincelada), nice melodies, many emotions and one, great unique voice. Cesaria. One and only.
My album rating (overall): 4.5/5

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
December holds the distinction of single-handedly putting Windham Hill on the map and being the new age album most likely to find its way into music collections of all ilk. In spite of being relentlessly overplayed during the holidays, the solo piano recording has aged quite well. Winston shapes holiday war-horses and original compositions into a captivating contemporary statement. His spare, understated style captures the feel of the dark season, employing ample resonance to evoke a reflective spaciousness. The album's straightforward simplicity conveys both the celebration and quietude that characterize the best of the Yuletide spirit. --Richard PriceAmazon.com
A quintessential example of George Winston's "folk piano" style, December speaks to the spirit of the season. Mixing traditional carols, a couple of classical works, and his own originals, Winston drops notes with icy clarity into a winter silence, rippling through "Carol of Bells" and coaxing dark, introspective moods from his own suite, "Night." The pianist's liner notes are also a trip as he cites the numerous sources for his music. Who would've thought that the gentle melodies of "Peace" were inspired by the soundtrack to TV's The Outer Limits? This 20th anniversary edition, which includes two bonus tracks, is a vast sonic improvement over previous releases. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
