5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Jazz @ Its Best.......2006-09-21

I don't know how could I've overlooked to rate this amazing CD for so many years; but anyway, here are my 5 stars and a few more described in these few lines.
This CD is one of 3-4 that Ricardo was able to take to the very top (No.1 in Jazz categories) between the late 80's and early 90's.

Since the tracks are not listed in this Amazon page, here they are:
    1. Small World
    2. Haven't We Met
    3. The Vendor
    4. Sun and Rain (w/Flora Purim)
    5. Bel
    6. Miles Away
    7. Pepe
    8. Back Home
    9. To Be With You (w/Joao Bosco)
    10. Tell Me All About It (w/Lou Pardini)
    11. Quiet Motion
    12. Around the Lake
    13. Night Wind

Among all these wonderful cuts; there are two that stand out as perfect examples of energetic/pulsating Brazilian Jazz: "Small World" and "Back Home" but make sure you check out the duets as well as cuts like "The Vendor" and "Night Wind"; superb.

And like in many other albums by Ricardo Silveira, his guest list is shocking; check this one out:
    - Ricardo Silveira / Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Percussion, Vocals, Compositions
    - Lou Pardini / Piano, Keyboards, Vocals
    - Steve Reid / Percussions
    - Leo Gandelman / Soprano Sax

Why does this CD rate 5 stars. Because the song Francesca IS smooth jazz. It's very rare that one song captures the essence of a music form but this song takes you within the music and leaves you there in a fantasy!

    5 out of 5 stars Superior.......2003-11-12

This CD to me is rated with high ranks. It is very inspirational moving and creative among all. If I could posses this CD caliber again, I truly will cherish it. It was stolen in 1997 from me with regrets. No music store has been able to get it for me. As I resided in Fort Worth, Texas, for 6 years no one ever heard of it nor did they reconize the artist that wrote it. To me that was extremely strange to me

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Brazilian Jazz.......2000-11-22

This is an awesome album; Ricardo is a top-of-the-line guitarist, and shows it in this album. A must have for Latin and Brazilian Jazz fans.

This CD is great, not only for jazz fans but an awesome listening experience for musicians also. Silveira's command of the jazz idiom shines, switching from soft, romantic pieces to uptempo and intense! Overall: AWESOME!

This has been (and I don't know why nobody else has rated this gem since 1990 when it first came out)a fantastic album by one of the best exponents of Brazilian Jazz and/or Jazz in general.
All of the songs are superb; some ballad-like and some very funky Jazz with all kinds of Brazilian elements.
      Among them, the highlights are:
'Til Tomorrow / Avec Elegance / Backlash / Green Line / Bom de Tocar (Good to Play) and Marimba Dance.

Check the amazing line up of musicians in this masterpiece:
      - Ricardo Silveira / Guitars, Keyboards, Synthesizer Programming

5 out of 5 stars Moacir Santos = A Musical Genius from Brazil.......2006-02-22

His childhood in the arid and remote interior of Brazil, under difficult conditions.

Despite that, at age 2 he was already playing with cans, leading a "baby band".

After several musical compositions in Brazil he moved to United States, where he lives now (Pasadena, California).

He worked as a church pianist, as a teacher and also as a "ghost writer" for some film soundtracks.

"Ghost Writer" is the composer that does not have his name published because someone paid him to do the work. Regrettable, but it is the truth. In fact he worked also as the ghost of the ghost, what happens when the ghost is very busy, so that he contracts a ghost.

Moacir is a very talented composer and arranger. Listen and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Newest from a Brazilian master.......2006-02-16

Moacir Santos is a master composer, arranger and saxophonist. His shore is Brazilian Jazz with a combo comprising rhythm section + brass in a unique combination which is consistently applied to such original and unconventional compositions.

In the late 60s, Santos went to live in the USA where he's recorded three albums for Blue Note Records. He also became an auxiliary writer for some great arranger just like Billy Byers was to Quincy Jones.

This is his 2005 album, a totally new collection of fresh music, good music but neglectable music though played by the best Brazilian musicians in the area.

Wynton Marsalis plays a sensational solo in the album's best track.

5 out of 5 stars Let it grow........2005-12-04

At first listen, I wasn't so sure. But this is fantastic! Let the voicings grow on you. There's no earth-shattering-ness here. But you can hear Moacir's voice through guest arrangements (even). And it's very distinct. I'm sure he deserves something more than obscurity, but most people won't have the patience to hear what's very, very unique here. It grows!

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass to swing all in one solo.......2004-11-18

Acoustic guitarist Ricardo Silveira and pianist Luiz Avellar along with percussionist Robertinho Silva are quite qualified to play and interpret the songs of Milton Nascimento, as at various times they have all been members of his band.
How appropriate, then, that the opening tune on their live concert album PLAY THE MUSIC OF MILTON NICASIMENTO which honors the great composer should be by his own favorite composers Lennon & McCartney - beautifully redone.
Silveria's guitar-picking attack can go from a country bluegrass intensity to a Wes Montgomery swing - all in less than the breath of one solo.

Ricardo is back after long 6 years since his previous CD; this time he seems more reflective and introspective, full of vituosity as always but more americanized and less brazilian; this time he is joined by long-time friends and awesome musicians like Armando Marcal,Carlos Balla and Gilson Peranzetta. The highlights of this great CD are: 1)Lua No Mar (Moon Over the Sea); this is one of the most romantic and best jazz ballads I've ever heard. 2) Tango Carioca (tango from Rio de Janeiro), 3) Bom Partido (Good Game), 4) Ingenua (Naive) and Pais Tropical. If you like Ricardo you'll like this CD eventhough is more mellow and acoustic; nothing close to his previous three albums that reached #1 in the Jazz charts.

Ricardo had 3-4 albums that went number one on the Jazz genre back in the late 80's early 90's, and this one is one of them.
      Sky Light is a very well balanced album with Ricardo's usual impressive technique both on Violao (Acoustic Guitar) and on Guitarra (Electric Guitar);
The themes are also very well balanced between fast-paced cuts such as 1) You Can Get What You Want, 4) The Rio Thing or 8) Hangin' Out, to beautiful Jazz ballads like 5) Magical Fantasy, 6) Cats or 9) Her Eyes.

And, once again (as it's always typical in Ricardo's albums), the line up of luminaries who play in this album is a m a z i n g; check it out:
      - Gary Meek / Sax
      - Luiz Avellar / Pianos
      - Nico Assumpcao / Bass
      - Armando Marcal / Percussions
      - Paulo Braga / Drums
      - Don Grusin / Keyboards
      - Paulinho DaCosta / Percussions
      - Alex Acuna / Drums
      - Russell Ferrante / Keyboards
      - Toninho Horta / Rhythm Acoustic Guitars
      - Ernie Watts / Sax
      - Abraham Laboriel / Bass
      etc.
      etc.
      etc.

This album has been out of print for years now, so if you find it used; don't hesitate; it'll bring you a great deal of avan-garde Brazilian Jazz.

5 out of 5 stars He not be right, but this album is right on time........2005-05-04

I have to admit that I lost track of all of the original cast of Nashville Star, except Buddy Jewell and shame on me for doing so. When the second season started I went back to the old web site and played Brandon's video clip of "Life Don't Get Much Better than This" and loved every minute of it. The guy put a smile on my face and it was such a pleasure to hear country music like it used to be, but with a modern vibe. I didn't keep up enough to know that Brandon had recorded an album, but as luck would have it, my wife and I were talking about how bad this third season of Nashville Star had been. During that conversation, I asked my wife if she had remembered that young guy from the first one and we looked it up and sure enough saw that he had recorded an album and what an album it is. I just purchased it recently and have played it all day long at work for days. What a Freshman performance! I would highly recommend this album for anyone who loves real Country music. To me it is sad that Big and Rich and Cowboy Troy get all of this air time as Country singers?!?! Someone please explain that crap and tell me why Brandon isn't on TV making videos?!?! Buy this album and support this guy! Tell radio stations in your area to put his music on. I am going to try and get him on radio here, even if the album goes back to 2003, it is still a solid album!
If Brandon doesn't get more exposure soon and I have to keep hearing Cowboy Troy, then something is very wrong in this world. Everybody has a right to make a living in music, but a REAL Country artist is getting overlooked, while some guy who couldn't make it in hip-hop is rapping over country tunes.
Keep doing this Brandon and I am doing my best to get your name out here in Virginia.

Brandon has showed that he can not only sing but he can also write. This CD is a must have it is great. His star will be shinning soon.

4 out of 5 stars Great classic sound from a brand new artist.......2004-01-23

When I saw Brandon on Nashville star I looked at his spikes hair and punk look and thought "What is he doing hear", but when he started to sing I heard a traditional country voice with some young vigor. If you Hank Jr, Garth, or Country with kick, you will enjoy this CD.
