Album Description
When Hybrid members Mike Truman, Chris Healings and Lee Mullin released their debut album "Wide Angle", it surprised anyone who thought that dance music couldn't be clever, challenging and musically astute. "Wide Angle" was over a year in the making. They wanted to produce something more melodic, imaginative, bigger and deeper than had ever been before. So they went from Swansea to London, Moscow, Paris and New York, gathering material for a set of startlingly innovative tracks. That was in 1999. Hybrid were received as one of the most acclaimed new bands of 1999, with "Wide Angle" collecting an abundance of album of the month reviews and ending 1999 on a high with a Best Dance Act award at the 2000 Miami Winter Music Conference, a slot on the Muzik magazine UK tour and a Best Live Act nomination at the Muzik magazine awards; all the more outstanding considering Hybrid had only a handful of live gigs under their belt at that time. They have gone on to hone! their gigs to near perfection, with live dates as far afield as Mount Fuji in Japan, Miami Beach, San Francisco, Ibiza, Sydney, Taiwan, New York, Singapore and Panama City, their global presence getting stronger with every dynamic live show performed and fans converted to the sound of rapturous applause. 2000 also saw the boys completing an extensive national US tour in support of Moby.
Embracing both their chart and live arena success, "Wide Angle" has morphed into a "Wider Angle". This is a special edition re-release of the album. In addition to the original album it also includes live versions of tracks recorded on last years tour of Japan, capturing the passion that has entranced many and bringing it into the living room. Their UK Top 40 hit, "Kid 2000", a reworking of a Pretenders track featuring Chrissie Hynde is also included on the CD as a bonus track, along with sought after and previously unreleased tracks "Kill City" and "Altitude". Highly emotive and inspiring, Hybrid's "Wider Angle" is sure to find it's way into many living rooms and DJ booths alike!
Customer Reviews:
The epitome.......2005-05-04
This album is basically a "hybrid" offspring of breakbeat and classical. Most people associate that genre with Mozart reworked in high-pitched keyboards accompanied by 4/4 bass thumps. So it's understandable that people are skeptical. I believe the only commercial song that has successfully incorporated strings with techno is moby's "Porcelain." But this is so much more better.
This CD has shattered, demolished, and crapped on the highest bar set of how amazing music can be. Ingenius infusion of classical components with hardcore breakbeats and that bellowing bass spurts fills the mind with so much emotion that your head will explode with joy. And if you've heard "Finished Symphony," you know what I'm talking about.
Highlights of CD1
Since this Cd has so many fantastic songs, it would actually be easier to display the songs that i don't like since they are the minority in this case. It's too hard to describe the individuality of the great songs without using the words Amazing, genius, mind-boggling less than 20 times.
Theme from Wide Angle-pretty plain song in techno standards...but it seems worse that it actually is since it's hard to top off Snyper.
Sinequanon-This song would have probably been twice as better without the vocals. Reminiscent of thievery corp.
hmm..that's it.
CD2
An added incentive to get out there and buy this CD. It's like buying a BMW, and then getting an Aston Martin with it. The mix from track 1 to 6 has gotten tiesto and oakenfold beat. The added bonus tracks (Especially kid 2000) make this album so much more valuable.
Best. Album. Ever........2004-11-02
I was first introduced to Hybrid when I bought Kinetica for the PS2. I fell in love with the opening song and after flipping through the instruction booklet, managed to find out about the artist. Literally the same day, I went out and bought this CD and to this day I'm still loving it. When I first bought it, it was the only CD in my stereo for weeks. Even now I still listen to it regularly. If I Survive and Finished Symphony are by far the best songs on the CD, but they're all amazing in the end.
The most epic electronic album ever concieved..........2004-08-15
In reality, I really don't know how I can describe this album except for one word... amazing. Absolutely mind-blowing. I was introduced to Hybrid and Wider Angle about 3 years ago. First, I was enticed by Finished Symphony and If I Survive. After listening to the album countless times, Symphony is still great and If I Survive is just as beautiful as ever. However, the real reason to buy this album are the small details that you pick up each time you re-listen to this album. And it will be hundreds of times. Chris and Mike are absolute genius's. Each and every song on the album will move you a different way. Obviously, dance floor classics, but more importantly...this is one VERY rare example of smart electronic music. Do yourself a favor, go buy this CD and take a week off work to get acquainted with it. This is one relationship that you will never grow tired of.
A wider angle on music........2004-06-23
Wider Angle, the 2 disc edition of Hybrid's debut, Wide Angle, is an extremely interesting album. Overall, this double CD set soars, thanks in most part to the second disc, an jaw-dropping and feet-moving mix of some of Hybrid's best tunes live.
The first disc is Wide Angle, intact in its original form. And while I'll probably get some heat for saying this, it's decidedly unbalanced. The CD has some incredible high notes, tracks that surpass everything around them and are nothing short of magic. It also has some depressingly mediocre tracks that really offer nothing memorable. If I Survive, Beachcoma and Finished Symphony lead the sensational side, with gorgeously timed symphonies providing a backdrop for the fantastic breakbeats and scratch effects. Beachcoma in particular remains a favorite of mine, with lovely saxophone work and a slick build up to a great climax. However, I Know, Dreaming Your Dreams, Fatal Beating, and the studio version of High Life are all decidedly bland numbers, with uninspired lyrics that hinder the freedom of the more impressive instrumentals. Sans vocals, these tracks might have faired better, but as it is, they're surprisingly lacking.
The second disc, however, makes up for this. The live tracks are nothing short of awesome. Burnin' and the live version of High Life, along with the wickedly paced live Snyper, tear up the dance floors while Accelerator and the live Finished Symphony soar above them. The bonus tracks excellent Kill City and the original version of Kid 2000 only add to the great package.
Overall, Wider Angle is a success. I'd give the first disc alone 3 stars; the three great tracks don't really make up for the others enough to warrant more. The second disc, however, is a 5 star piece, through and through. Together, Wider Angle is a 4 star delight with high and low points that balance out to make an enjoyable and note-worthy foray into electronica.
Go Out and Buy this CD Now!!!!.......2004-06-13
I have been listening to electronica for as long as i can remember, and this is one of those few "special" albums that blows you away!!! Just when I had thought that Dance music couldn't be creative and original anymore, I heard "finished symphony", and was amazed! The ability of hybrid to fuse housey-breakbeats with orchestral influences is amazing, and this is one of those CD's that has stayed in my CD player fairly frequently over the last few years...Buy Wider Angle because of the equally good 2nd disc...Purely magical stuff, don't waste your time reading my review, go out and buy this cd!!!!
Top songs: Snyper, Finished Symphony, High Life, If I survive, Kill City (2nd disc), Kid 2000 (12" Version on the 2nd disc)....

Lyrical complexity, spiritual adventures.......2007-04-22
These three delightfully lyrical concerti, with themes respectively of love, harmony, and peace, are all distinct. The middle work is similar to the art of the late composer Lou Harrison, and indeed the canonic and the dance variations of Concerto No. 2 employ a gamelan ensemble as many of Harrison's works. However, Kyr is even more a romantic, and his sweet spiritual music soars and envelops the listener. Ron Blessinger's violin performance is a perfect match for these compositions. The first work on love is indeed amorous, but the third, regarding peace, is not so peaceful at first. It is the not the peace of spiritual or transcendent tranquility but one of aftermath. It must be hard fought to achieve, metaphorically. Drumming, clanging, and clamor give way to lamentation and reconciliation; it ends in resolve, solace, and, yes at last, peace. Robert Kyr, who is at home also in Early Music, is an excellent composer and I look forward to hearing more of his explorations. This particular recording will surprise you in how good it is.
amazingly beautiful.......2006-09-09
I noticed Violin Concerto Trilogy hadn't been reviewed and it deserves to be. Kyr's music is intelligent, listenable and lovely. This and 'Unseen Rain' both deserve a much wider audience. I recommend both.

Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-06-25
An Angle's "The Truth Is That You Are Alive" is a truely amazing album. If you love fun rock n' roll music and emotional vocals, this is a CD for you! From very upbeat "rockin" songs to those powerful mellow songs, "The Truth Is That You Are Alive" has it all. Overall, it is a very pleasing album with meaningful lyrics and powerful music.
breathtaking..........2007-06-21
An Angle's latest release, "The Truth Is That You Are Alive" is a fascinating release - not to mention, a remarkable follow-up to, "We Can Breathe Under Alcohol". The stylings of the leader of the band, Kris Anaya have made the album what it is.
An intriguing album.......2007-06-21
At first listen, An Angle's "The Truth Is That You Are Alive" may catch you off guard. Then, after letting the perfect mix of instrumentals and vocals sink into your eardrums, the idea will hit you, "This is different." The reason why this album is wonderful is because it's different than most of the music that's coming out right now. Kris Anaya has an interesting voice that feels just right for the lyrics that are being sung. Anaya is also very versatile with his vocals, ranging from mellow and relaxing to powerful and aggressive. This intriguing style makes "The Truth Is That You Are Alive" an album you MUST check out.
Simply Brilliant.......2007-06-14
An Angle's new album, The Truth Is That You Are Alive, is simply brilliant. From straight rock n' roll jams to well orchestrated compositions, the album is crafted in a stripped down and artistic fashion claiming an aesthetically pleasing feel. Through clever lyrics and moments of clarify and true realization, Kris Anaya wows, yet stating by the end, he is not as smart as what you think. The album is a masterpiece worth as much time as it takes to get into.

Gem.......2004-06-11
"Follow That Road" is a gem of a song, nostalgic and full of lovely imagery. Doesn't anybody who's been around for a while daydream of following that road back in time to recapture a lost love only to be brought short by a little reality check. Anne's singing and guitar brings just the right ambiance to her wistful song.
One Possibly Perfect Song - and more.......2001-11-09
Yesterday's Wind should takes its place among the perfect ballads of music. Ms Hills entire album is fine, but the first track brings her work into the light and the rest of the CD holds it there. Like Joan Baez, Sarah Mclachlin or Mary Bristow, it's all in the voice - and the voice is wonderful!
ANNE'S FINEST YET.......2000-12-06
This album allows Anne Hills' listeners to witness her coming into full bloom as a fine songwriter. Long know for her beautiful voice and carefully chosen repertoire of wonderful songs by other writers, she comes into her own as a writer on this finely crafted release. Long-time concert favorites such as 'Follow that road' and 'Sound of the looms' are present here, as well as some newer compositions that are destined to become classics. 'Fighting giants' is at once heartbreaking and inspirational -- and there's not a single weak track in the set. The musicianship, recording and production are first-rate -- this is an album to hold in high esteem for years to come.

Dont be close minded. its a great CD........2006-07-26
First off, let me say, this is a great CD. It is worth your money. An Angle is a great band.
Now...So, ok, ive been a huge Bright Eyes fan for years now. love Conors work. and i must say, when i first heard An Angle, i was pissed off. i though, this has got to be a joke... it sounds so much like Conor and Bright Eyes. what a rip off.. Those thoughts went on for a while.. untill i gave An Angle a chance. once i did, i found that there music, though a lot sounding like Bright Eyes, is amazing. great songs, lyrics, emotion. really, a great band.
There first CD, i will admit had a lot or Brigth Eyes rip-offs.. its true and clear.. but its still a great CD and i would buy it if i were you.
This CD is less like Bright Eyes and more like... well, An Angle. it really is amazing. Great song structure, vocals, and diversity in songs /instrements.
Also, pick up there new 5 track EP. It is amazing. Really.
all in all, BUY THIS CD. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT IF YOU ARE OPEN MINDED AND GIVE BANDS A CHANCE.
An Angle is a great band........2006-05-22
I recently saw An Angle, and it was close to amazing. They didn't really play too much off this album, and when I asked them later I was told that most of what they had played was on their new ep. They did, however, play my favorite songs from this album. Green Water, A Way With Words, True Love, and Change the World. I have listened to this album almost non-stop since buying it and I don't really see that ending any time soon. It's really funny to me, seeing all the negative things people have posted online about An Angle. It really makes me wonder how many of these people have actually listened to this band. I understand the similarities to Bright Eyes, but come on, it is very obvious that they are different bands. I think people should stop paying so much attention to message boards and form their own opinions on what they like and dislike. This band is great, and I can't wait to see them again.
you're entering the no-spin zone........2005-11-29
ok, i'm going to try to be fair. the album isn't really bad. is it worth your money? i wouldn't dish out any clams, but give it a listen. it's fairly well crafted pop music. like belle & sebastian and oh, i don't know, maybe BRIGHT EYES, it's simple song structures. nothing horribly fancy, but definately an improvement from their debut. maybe i think so because i don't particularly care for "fevers and mirrors" which their last album mimicks, and this album is more like more recent bright eyes (because this is their most recent album. i see a pattern), which i do care for. but let's get this out of the way. do we really hate the band, or the people in the band? or do we hate the record company that obviously went out of their way to find a band to market as another bright eyes? maybe the band is telling the truth. they did diss bright eyes and say that they had similar influences (probably a cover up, but don't cancel it out), and we wouldn't know them if it wasn't for that particular record company. also, conor might have ripped off david dondero, but he's done a lot more experimenting also. conor's heroes (dondero, simon joyner, etc.) have consistantly written folk music, while conor has done so much more. his vocals are a definate rip off (he told the audience at a brighte eyes/dondero show i was at a couple weeks ago), but his style isn't especially similar. not saying he's origional (i'm telling you, he's not), but he's best known for his songwriting skills and his sound incorporates much more than just david dondero (bob dylan, daniel johnston, etc.). if you're an oberst fan, check out willy mason if you haven't already (you probably have). he's, in my opinion, a much better musician than conor was at his age.
idiots.......2005-11-27
I love how someone was calling the people who thought that they "werent" the same, stupid. first of all, the person who is the center of this band is named kris, as bright eyes is conor. they have seperate last names as well! would you look at that! yeah, he does sound like conor, you have to be an earless brainless idiot to not see the similarities. dont act like youre above everyone and super obscure by saying they dont sound alike. because they do. and conor has uniquely adopted this style of music which is.. obviously being posed off of. i could see if an angle maybe used his singing style and then chose his words and writing style differently, or even music writing style, but he doesnt, he goes right with copying off of bright eyes, and that's not very creative or commendable, whether or not he is a drunk like conor or not. just because conor drinks doesnt mean he puts on any less of a good show.. here's a question.. ever been to a bright eyes show? oh, obviously not.
If he is following Bright Eyes, he has a lot of maturing to do.......2005-11-04
First of all, this album mirrors Bright Eyes in so many ways, it's almost ridiculous. He sings about photographs, NBC, drinking. Bright Eyes song Old Soul Song is all about developing a photograph. Let's Not Sh** Ourselves has Conor yelling about NBC, ABC, and CBS (two of which An Angle has in Change The World) and Bright Eyes sings about drinking in about 1/4 of his songs. Also, Kris has mastered the Bright Eyes singing style. This is not a negative thing, it's just very similar.
But as for the album itself, minding the bright eyes comparision, it is about 3 miles away from a masterpiece. That being said, at least it's on the road to a masterpiece, albeit far far away. Songs like True Love and A Way With Words are fantastic and shine on the album. Songs like White Horses and Green Water have an strong energy and really keep you interested in what else Kris has to offer. But too many songs just leave the listener bored and asking "when is he going to stop singing about getting drunk?" Songs like Born in a Bottle and Angry Drunk are pretentiously long and lyrically boring. Going back to Bright Eyes, the only reason that songs like The Big Picture work is because the lyrics are so brilliant. Kris doesn't have this lyrical ability yet.
However, I am excited about the future of An Angle. I think in the next coming years if Kris can mature a little, both musically and lyrically, he'll make an album that's brilliant. An album like Bright Eyes' "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" (which I believe is his best). Maybe he should just lay off the drinking.

A brilliant debut.......2007-04-06
"The Proper Angle", is a brilliant debut and one of the finest contemporary jazz discs I've ever heard. This is lively and exciting music played by outstanding musicians. Some major grooves happen on "Uncle Pete", or "Our Father Who Art Blakey", while "Broski", "Earthlings", and "One For Honor" incorporate a high-energy swing feel to the record, and softer tunes like "The Dreamer", "Sand Jewels" and "Dolores Carla Maria" help balance out the disc and give it a modern feel. The players on this are: Charles Fambrough (bass), Kenny Kirkland (piano), Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove (trumpet), Branford Marsalis and Joe Ford (saxophone), Jeff Watts (drums), and Jerry Gonzalez, Steve Berrios, Mino Cinelu (percussion). Of the eleven songs on the record, Fambrough penned seven, three are band members compositions, and one is a traditional number, I believe.
This was originally released in 1991 on CTI records, and has been either out of print or re-released by other record companies. Since it's now available again, there is no excuse not to own this amazing disc.
Beautiful, haunting and where jazz should have been going.......2002-05-22
In 1991 bassist Charles Fambrough released this record in hte midst of the smooth jazz explosion and it didn't get much play, but it should have. It's where jazz should have been headed: cool, mindful of the past, eye always on the new tales to tell.
Fambrough writes an incredible song and leads a band arrangement like a master, picking the right songs and the right players for every track. He uses heavy hitters and it's a shame that this record passed under the radar of so many people. You can tell he was sweating over this record as he ran te tracks through their paces.
A great record for traditionalists, and a smooth-enough ride for the smooth jazzers who want to expand their tastes a little bit into the history of the form.

There first CD, this one, i will admit had a lot or Brigth Eyes rip-offs.. its true and clear.. but its still a great CD and i would buy it if i were you. Great song structure, vocals, and diversity in songs /instrements. Some songs, like Unnoticeable, Self Medicate, Did you did you did you, Flicker Of A Cigarette they are just too amazing not to buy this CD and hear. please trust me.
Also, pick up there new 5 track EP. It is amazing. Really.
all in all, BUY THIS CD. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT IF YOU ARE OPEN MINDED AND GIVE BANDS A CHANCE.
Blatant Ripoff of Oberst- Anyone who thinks otherwise is clinically insane.......2005-11-28
Anyone who argues that the infamous "band" An Angle is not a blatant ripoff of Bright Eyes is clinically insane. The person that argues "sImPLE PLAnnn and GoOd ChArloTTE sound the same OMGGZ that proves that bright eyes and an angle can sound the same and thats perfectley oK!!1111": are you seriously comparing those "bands" as being worthy of even being discussed in this conversation? Of course there will be bands that sound similar to them. Simple Plan is mainstream crap made for 13 year olds. As for bright eyes and elliott smith?! Are you serious? Do you listen to elliott smith? If you did, you'd know the song structures, sound of his voice, etc is entirely different from bright eyes. But not to drag on, "flicker of a cigarette", "did you, did you, did you", "like a locket like a necklace...". It is simply impossible for all of this to be a coincidence, as well as the sound of his voice (he's from Sacramento for god's sake, stop faking a Nebraskan accent), and the artwork. I hope this is a joke and if it is, I will just laugh along with whoever made it, because they did a damn good job.
I'm Sick Of It All..........2005-11-23
Ok, so KS has a similar voice to Conor Oberst. So what? What's the big deal? Blink-182, Good Charlotte, and Simple Plan all sound exactly the same, and they're getting five star reviews! Just lay off of it. And, even though their voices are similar, their music is much different, they sound different. They even use orchestras and accordions and brass and woodwinds and... well, that's it. But this is not your ordinary rip off folk/indie band. And, maybe his voice naturally sounds like Conor Oberst's. You can't help that. An Angle are very talented and experiment with different sounds. I pop this CD in from time to time, not my favorite, but it's very good! So, just give this a chance without thinking it as a Bright Eyes rip-off, because that's just what it's not.
dont be ignorant.......2005-10-27
how can all of you people say that an angle is just a bright eyes rip off? inspiration is the element that drives artists to enhance and recreate art. also, have none of you heard of elliott smith? using your logic, conor oberst is just a rip off of smith and thus no bright eyes ablums should be purchased. an angle is well-written and emotional. it is a good ablum.
It's laughable........2005-09-28
If this really isn't a joke, then good god. What a pathetic and blatant rip off of Bright Eyes. And no, I'm not only saying that because their voices are similar...the lyrics, song structures, titles, and even artwork are all just stolen from Conor Oberst. I was willing to give this band a chance before I listened to them, hoping that since I'd heard so much about the similarity to BE, that they would only be influenced by Bright Eyes and have talent and creativity, but I don't even like the songs, because it's as though the singer tried to paraphrase Oberst's songs and try to sell the plagiarism. It's actually kind of repulsive to see the lengths to which Kris Anaya will go. Save your money and buy a BE record instead.

Believe the hype!.......2007-05-02
This is Dong Bang Shin Ki's (DBSK; they are also known as TVXQ, TVfXQ, and THSK, depending on the country) first Korean album...and it's an absolute triumph. They're one of the hottest groups in all of Asia right now and for good reason. This is one of the few boybands in which ALL the members are very talented at singing and dancing.
This album is incredible -- an absolutely sparkling debut album. Great vocals and very, very catchy tunes, encompassing some acapella, dance, rock/alternative, R&B, hiphop.
All the songs on this album are great and I can listen through the entire thing without having to skip, but here are my favorites:
- There are 2 versions of "Hug" on this CD: in Korean and English. They've also sung this song in Mandarin and Japanese...and ALL versions are terrific. It's such a good and adorable song!
- "The Way You Are" - CATCHY AS HELL; I love this song.
- "TRI-ANGLE" - great dance track; very catchy; also features BoA and Trax
- "My Little Princess" - a beautiful ballad; this song makes it evident that they can really SING.
- You Always
- I Never Let Go
- Miduhyo
Believe the hype! These boys are all extremely talented and this is one rocking CD (I'd also highly recommend checking out their other two Korean CDs - "Rising Sun" and "O", and their two Japanese albums - "Heart Mind and Soul" and "Five in the Black"...all excellent albums). DBSK should be sticking around for a long time. DBSK Hwaiting!
EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just buy it........2006-09-19
DONG BANG SHIN KI ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And with this album you get them singing in ENGLISH too, for the International version of Hug, which is about THE most adorable thing you are ever going to hear. Man, can these guys SING. It's a great album, and they display their (many) talents to perfection. I love ALL the songs, and it's great that they have a contrast, cute ballads like Hug (awwwwww) and stuff like Tri-Angle, which frankly defies description. In a good way. ^ ^ This is their first album, so get hooked here, and NEVER LOOK BACK!!!!!!!!!!
