Album Description

Calabash is the first volume of Afrobeat Poems. Afrobeat poetry utilizes Pidgin English and its idiomatic infusions of English and vernacular Nigerian languages as a medium to reach the listener/reader. The presentation of the poetry with the background of Afrobeat music gives this genre an authentic and fresh appeal. Consistent with the music of Fela Kuti, the legendary originator of Afrobeat, this collection stands true to Afrobeat philosophy: raise pan-African consciousness while entertaining the audience. In Calabash, Ikwunga in collaboration with Dele Sosimi, Femi Elias, and Justin Thurgur, have produced a unique fusion of Spoken Word, African style call- and- answer recital, with a new contemporary Afrobeat.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing work!.......2006-01-03

Amazing CD. Such depth and complexity of lyrics and sound. Excellent examination of current social issues. The musical arrangement is classic afrobeat. Recommend strongly!

5 out of 5 stars Courageous Adventure!.......2004-12-23

Ikwunga Wonodi's Calabash Afrobeat Poems is an invitation to all lovers of good music. Brilliantly enriched with the infusion of poetry, Calabash...skillfully meshes Afrobeat music with skillfully constructed lyrics suffused with conscious messages and stories. Wonodi's voice, though often fluctuating,
resonates the kind of tone that should grab the attention of fans familiar with Afrobeat music and music inspired by poetry. His style, though influenced by Nigerian/West African pigeon English, is reminiscent of vocalization by Gill Scott, Les Nubians, MC Solaar and Mutabaruka. Cuts such as "I don love", "Go Slow" and "Da Bomb" are obvious classics. Brilliant effort for a first album!!

4 out of 5 stars Cool Concoctions in a Calabash .......2004-11-28

The title pretty much says it all. This is a veritably embroidered calabash of poetry stewing in sweet afrobeat concoctions; a stunning debut and an indication of great things to come. Calabash Vol. 1 finds Ikwunga delivering a set of fresh verses on longstanding concerns. Much of the material here is as long on poetry as it is on titilating music, a provocative mix of pedestrian pidgin and sound that most people will be hearing for the first time. Ikwunga's raw delivery and Dele Sosimi's minimalist Afro-Chill constructions make this a winning disc.

Single label compilations can often be a boring exercise in marketing, but not so here. This is a thoughtful collection of evocative tracks from the Music of the World catalogue and it works very well as its own entity. Invocations' worldwide viewpoint includes a Kiowa hymn, indigenous and Hispanic music from Peru, the spiritually rich mbira music of Zimbabwe, and Iranian poetic songs. The artists' roster includes well-known names like Cornel Pewewardy, K. Subramaniam, Trichy Sankaran, Hassan Hakmoun, Dumi Maraire, and Ephat Mujuru; but it's the surprise of the unknowns that makes this album particularly interesting. Church bells in Peru, the Alliance West Singers, and Jalal & Soheil Zolfonum offer new sounds. This is a well-sequenced collection of ecstatic high points and subtle, spiritual lows. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Invoking God through music from around the world..........2002-07-04

This is a great collection that shows how different cultures sing to God and Invoke the Divine in their own unique way. African drumming, South American pan pipes, Hindu song, Native American chanting, and much more. Very uplifting and enjoyable.

    5 out of 5 stars Invocations.......2000-01-18

This album is a great collection of tracks that truly get you in the mood to have an elevated frame of mind. They are great for doing yoga to etc. I am an aficionado of musical traditions from around the world and in almost all cases found this compilation's selections to both be authentic and fun to listen to. I usually do not recommend compilations of any sort as they tend to use either very poppy or "cheap tracks" but this compilation shows thought and understanding of the musical traditions it represents.

      Product Description

A live recording of a Palo ceremony in La Habana, Cuba, incorporating cajones, wooden sound boxes as percussion instruments. On this recording, we hear just two cajones and a guataca. The larger, deep sounding cajon carries the basic rhythm implying bass strokes, while the smaller, higher pitched cajon improvises on top of it. This concept of a higher pitched solo drum is borrowed from the quinto in Rumba. In all other African and Afro-Cuban drumming styles including Palo Congo, it is typically the big, deep sounding instrument that has the soloing function. Recorded by Lawrence Millard on 12/21/2001 Liner notes by Thomas Altmann, 08/2004 Our complete catalog, samples, photos and more is on our website. Earthcds - Real music from real places.

The Pigeons du Sable are maintaining a link to their past by playing Gnawa music, a ritual music that was brought to Morocco from slaves of Sub-Saharan Africa. The heart of the Gnawa instrumentation is the guembri, a 3 stringed lute that plays a bass line. Although we also hear the drum (ganga), metal castanets (qraqeb), and hand clapping, it is the trance inducing chants that makes this CD great. 65 minutes.

IAppeals to all who who love Spirit and Nature, and who love Native American, Celtic, Peruvian Indian and African American roots music.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Message music: honor the soul.......2004-01-20

"Spirits" begins and ends with an invocation. In between are ten prayers, each beautifully presented as an "ancestral echo" in a style suggestive of an origin in times past: traditional Native American, ancient Celtic, African-American spiritual, Gospel, spoken word. The prayers feel like your own voice speaking from the inside out. They're all woven together by consistent sonic landscaping and by familiar universal rhythms that echo biology: heartbeat, breathing, the ebb and surge of circulation. The arrangements are thoughtful and spacious. The mix of sounds is clean and elegant, never calling attention to itself. There is passion in some of the vocal performances, but not so much as to distract from the sense of flow necessary if you want to use this disc for meditation and healing ~ purposes for which this material is well suited. Not recommended for stylistic purists....this is eclectic spiritual music that wears very well.

5 out of 5 stars Our Ancestors speak through.............2002-07-10

Spirits Walking The wind....That is exactly where i am when i listen to this C.D. It has become my resting sanctuary in my mind. As i listen to her voice and wisdom..I am strongfully lifted to a higher place..full of honor for the Earth, and all the reasons to be here. If i slip into "Life's" fear and sadness i am brought back to whole and reason when i listen to this c.d...It gives me the okay to be with my highest self and of course without the spirit there would be no self...and in the world that lives through Nancy...obviouselly there are "Spirits Walking The Wind.." whispers...the old ways are calling.

5 out of 5 stars Heather is Mother Earths voice.......2002-12-23

I've known Heather Pierson for years....she is great family friend. However...until last night I had never heard her perform. She took my breathe away! Her voice is gentle, yet strong and her rhythms are soothing and meditative. Most of the songs on this album are like chants....strong affirmations of faith in the divine, love, peace and inner strength. We've played this album several times since we bought it last night and my six year old already knows the words and rhythms of the songs. I know I'll be looking for several more of her albums now.....:)
