The Early Eydie Gorme.......2007-06-17
From the very first track 'Tell Me More' you can hear the that the lady has always been one hell of a singer. Listening to this now it comes as
no surprise she won a Grammy in 1967 for her interpretation of 'If He Walked Into My Life'.
These were the pop songs of her early recording career and as usual you find that she always gave of her best no matter how trite the song,
Eydie has great fun with 'Climb Up The Wall' 'Uska Dara' and 'I've Gotta
Crow' but it is in the ballads she excels.
Side 2 has 9 of her early ABC Paramount singles to open with plus her first ABC-Paramount LP 'Eydie Gorme'
Fantastic buy and only three Coral sides could not be found to make the set complete

On his assured debut, David Ford serves up folk-pop with punk attitude. In other words, the instrumental backing may be acoustic, but the lyrics are as caustic as they are confessional. Three tracks, "State of the Union," "Katie," and "Cheer Up (You Miserable F**k)," can't even be played on the radio--in their unedited form, at any rate. Released to wide acclaim in the UK in 2005, Ford wrote, performed, and produced I Sincerely Apologize for All the Trouble I've Caused. He even shot the videos. Granted, there are a few guests: Franco Bidanco (saxophone), Frances Law, and Ford's football club, Team Sundry (backing vocals). The rest is all David, who has a way with self-deprecation and a soothing voice that reveals a trace of a Sussex accent. In "I Don't Care What You Call Me," he laments, "I am unforgivable." On "Katie," it's "I'm so dumb." He has choice words for old lovers, too, like "I know I let you down/and Christ, you let me know/every time/and time again" ("I Don't Care"). The results lie between fellow Brits Badly Drawn Boy and label mate Aqualung, with whom he has shared the stage. I Sincerely Apologize may not exactly be a day brightener, but it's a cathartic listen for anyone who's ever wronged or been wronged--and who hasn't been on one side or another of that equation? --Kathleen C. 3 1/2 stars-- A sign of better things to come........2006-11-01
If Aimee Mann has a reputation for being a bit of a downer, David Ford epitomizes that. Unflappingly British in both his sound and his presentation, Ford clings pretty much to a bitter atmosphere throughout, but he somehow avoids falling into cliche, and at his best-- "Cheer Up (You Miserable F***") for example-- he manages to find a way to be laced in a sarcastic bitterness and still maintain an uplifting spirit. Musically, the album swirls with acoustic guitars, pianos, organs and harmonica, typically starting with one accompanying instrument and building over time to a head as Ford layers instrument on top of instrument and occasionally vocal on top of vocal. It gives the music an almost locomotive feel to it.
In the end, "I Sincerely Apologize..." is a bit of a mixed effort-- it's never unlistenable, albeit sometimes it isn't particlarly memorable ("What Would You Have Me Do?"), and when it's great, it's occasional undercurrent of British folk ("Katie") and ability to be unnervingly direct and building to overwhelming (Bush criticism "State of the Union") sink pretty deep. It's tendency to fall into the same patterns keeps me from rating it higher than i did, but it's clear David Ford has a fine future ahead of him. Check him out live if you can, he impressed me. Recommended.
Amazing Performer.......2006-10-06
You should give him a try and see him live if you can - it is great to see one man make such a wall of sound through tight layering and looping of his own sounds.

The second album from the creative Brazilian trio of Moreno Veloso, Alexandre Kassin and Domenico Lancelloti, Domenico + 2's Sincerely Hot is the follow up to Moreno + 2's Musical Typewriter. Whereas the quiet Typewriter featured Moreno Veloso front and center with acoustic guitar and vocals, Hot is altogether more electronic and beat-oriented with drums higher in the mix. Domenico co-wrote and sung all the songs and resulting album is an interesting collision of styles that range from the bossa nova of "Solar" to the punk of "Você E Eu" to the American R&B of "Felizes Ficaremos Na Estrada." Those songs in the Brazilian electro-pop middle ground are typically denser with electric keyboards and bass, horns, loops or even cello filling out the sound. If the beautiful Moreno album was a wistful look back to bossa nova and the Tropicalia movement, Domenico + 2 steadfastly moves forward in the here and now with its eclectic influences and avant-garde flavoring. --Tad Hendrickson

Robert Goulet My Love Forgive Me/Sincerely Yours.......2007-06-08
My Love Forgive Me/ Sincerely Yours by Robert Goulet.......2001-10-10
Back in 1964, barely in my teens, I walked into my grandmother's
house one Saturday to find my two middle-aged aunts gushing over
a handsome male singer who was scheduled to appear on the Ed
Sullivan show.
I could not imagine who could elicit such a reaction.
One of my aunt's dashed from the room and returned, holding
a copy of the LP "My Love Forgive Me." The singer was Robert
Goulet.
Well, years later, late in my teens, and listening to the music
of my parent's generation instead of my own, I discovered what
all the fuss was about.
Robert Goulet has one of the finest voices in the pop music of
that era. Indeed, that handsome baritone sings those warm and
tender ballads so convincingly, it's no wonder the ladies swoon.
On the swing numbers, I can't help but snap my fingers and sing
along. His showmanship radiates in every performance, whether
in cabaret, in musical theater, or on records.
This CD reissue, in addition to the forementioned LP, also
includes the LP "Sincerely Yours," a beautiful recording also
released in the early 60s on Columbia Records. His albums back
then were big sellers for the label. It's wonderful that two
more are now available to his fans in the CD format.
Footnote: Highly recommended, too, is the Sony import that
includes his two LPs of Broadway songs.
Goulet Hits The Mark.......2001-03-12
Robert Goulet had released 2 alblums prior to "Sincerely Yours" with mixed results. He had been trying to make that transition from "Broadway Baritone" to the pop charts , and he finally hit the mark with "Sincerely Yours". With a mixture of both Broadway and Standards charts and a letting loose of that big voice he finally found the combination that showed his talents. The arranger and conductor, Sid Ramin, should be given credit for a job well done.
The "My Love Forgive Me" tracks are a different kind of offering. This alblum was Robert Goulet's most popular, given the fact that beside "If Ever I Would Leave You", the title track of this alblum is the song he was most associated with during his recording career. There are 4 different conductors on the 12 tracks and the alblum, although it doesn't suffer from this,it feels a little less consistent. I will say that on the tracks Mr. Goulet is at the top of his form, and most of the set has a very serious feel to it.
The 2 bonus tracks are the icing on the cake. Marty Manning's arrangement of "If Ever I Would Leave You" and Mr. Goulet's delivery of his signature song are worth the price of admission. "Summer Sounds" is a representative song of the mid-60's, when summer songs were the rage.
Now if we can only get Sony to produce a box set of Robert Goulet's entire Columbia output!
A CLASSICAL SINGER.......2001-02-13

"When It's Summer" ~ composed by Nat King Cole.......2005-01-12
On the first album recorded in 1967 "Sincerely", we have never before in an album a wonderful collection of love songs "BABY BLUE", "BECAUSE YOU LOVE ME", "CUPPUCCINA", a swingin' lively love tune that Nat completely grooves with, "LET ME TELL YOU, BABE", "LET TRUE LOVE BEGIN", "NO OTHER HEART", "NOTHING IN THE WORLD", "SILVER BIRD", "SWEETHEARTS ON PARADE", "TAKE A FOOL'S ADVICE" and "YOU ARE MINE"...from the arrangements of David Cavanaugh and Nat's spellbinding vocals make very track a classic listen.
The second album "The Beautiful Ballads", was recorded in the late '60s with a compilation of songs arranged by Nelson Riddle, Ralph Carmichael, Les Baxter, Gus Levene and Tony Lavello...featuring a few stands outs "MARNIE", the haunting Bernard Herrmann tune from the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, "HERE'S TO MY LADY", a wonderful lyrical Johnny Mercer outing, "IF I KNEW", a touching Meredith Wilson track, "WHEN IT'S SUMMER", in collaboration with Johnny Burke, Nat wrote this tune himself, no wonder there is something special and magical about this recording.
This collection is available on EMI/Capitol Import label...but the care that was taken is incredible on every twenty two tracks...a must have for all the fans of this beloved man...they'll never be another pass this way again...thank you to the UK for this release of Nat "King" Cole and the songs that will remain with us always and forever...just the way we like 'em!

Overdubbed versions - but for most songs, you've no choice........2003-12-04
Unfortunately, in reissuing these records, EMI decided to be faithful to the releases rather than the original recordings. Therefore, the overdubbed, not the original versions, are on this CD. This would rule the release out for most folks, were it not for one little detail: almost all of these tracks are not available anywhere else, original or overdubbed. So in some cases, you really don't have a choice.
What does this mean for the musical value here? That's the question, and it's a good one. If you want good, effective "classic pop" and aren't concerned what's overdubbed and what's original, this is a surprisingly strong CD. These two are the best albums of the overdubbed lot, containing the best songs overall and suffering the least from the overdubs.
Particular points of interest include one of the best of Nat's singles, 'Back In My Arms', featuring not only a vocal of a nature only Nat could provide, but one of Nelson Riddle's most daring orchestrations. As it would have to go, this track is harmed the most by the overdubs. Knowing the original off an original 45, I can't even listen to this version despite their obvious attempts to make the overdubs "fit." But if you can't get the original, this is the best you can do for now. Let's hope you'll soon hear the original orchestration! Fat chance though, thanks to Capitol having left this classic single off their so-called "Classic Singles" box set.
Another beauty is 'When It's Summer' in part owing to Nat's particular talents. Consisting of but a set of verse and a relatively simple musical structure, the song is an example of simplicity. Nelson Riddle adds an exquisite orchestration, a warm mid-summer day in nature caught in sound (not helped, but not entirely destroyed by the overdubs). Nat proceeds to read the spare lyrics with a musicality, sensitivity and breadth of expression that is unique to him.
Another to single out is 'Take A Fool's Advice', which is to my opinion Nat's strongest early rock'n'roll/R&B oriented song. He completely melds with the context here, and his vocal is superb. Whatever overdubs are in this track do it no harm (for a change).
Other tracks range from the early ballads such as 'Here's To My Lady' (the intro is good) through to latter ballads such as 'Marnie' (another good intro), popular numbers such as 'Let Me Tell You Babe' to the last song he ever recorded, 'No Other Heart'. All of them have their moments and some are wondrous.
While the original LPs were also available in stereo mixes, for some reason EMI uses the mono mixes for the CD. This was unfortunate. On the plus side, the majority of the set is a clear, excellent mono, with very good extension and resolution. The transfer is of good quality, free of needless processing, dropouts and other issues. Considering the overdubbed nature of the sources, then, the sound is generally more than satisfactory. It's the overdubbing that's most objectionable, in line behind Capitol for still not having released the original versions of these and so many other Nat King Cole songs.
Other reissues of the overdubbed albums include 'Sings the Great Songs' / 'Thank You Pretty Baby' (the weakest albums of the lot) and 'Looking Back' (next best after this CD and paired with the original, unadulterated NKC masterpiece, 'Where Did Everyone Go?' no less!).
The rating reflects both the songs themselves and the presentation, including consideration of the overdubbing, which I cannot condone. Presentation notwithstanding, many tracks in this set warrant a higher rating.

Disappointing, but not because of Nat.......2001-04-25
My favorite of this 2-fer CD is SINCERELY. Nat as always, sounds superb, especially on my favorites, "Sweethearts on Parade" (1958), "You Are Mine" (1960), "Cappuccina" (1961) (if you like the songs "L-O-V-E" and "More", you'll love this song), "No Other Heart" (1964), "Nothing In the World" (1957) and "Take A Fool's Advice" (1961). However, I have to only repeat what the other reviewers had said: THEY SHOULD HAVE NOT REMASTERED THIS IN MONO!!! You can't even experience the true beauty of these tunes in that format. I know that a few of these songs were originally recorded in mono, and it's understandable as to why they would leave THOSE as they were...but to remaster the stereo versions into mono too, was a VERY bad idea.
Capitol/EMI, the tunes on these two LPs deserve better than this! I only rated it with three stars because Nat's vocal performances are remarkable...stereo, if it IS an option, is the ONLY way to listen to Nat Cole! So, please, can we try it again?
Not Quite Beautiful, Remastered.......2000-11-19
