One If Not The Best Disney Film Score Ever Written.......2007-06-06
If Disney made one glaring mistake with this movie and soundtrack CD, it was the deletion of "If I Never Knew You". The pop version is OK, but this really needs the Judy Kuhn/Mel Gibson version to round it out. And maybe some bonus tracks like the deleted "The Middle of The River" demo, the early "Colors of The Wind" demo and the alternate version of "Dancing To The Wedding Drum" that was replaced by "Steady As The Beating Drum".
Hopefully a remastered reissue will include this additional stuff. But for now, you still can't go wrong with this.
the beauty of nature in song.......2007-05-08
this was the first time since beauty and the beast that alan menken truly deserved the oscar for best musical score. this score is obveously powerful and moving, but the most endearing feature is the use of native american rhythm, and sounds. this naturally gives a unity to the piece along with the film, but it provides a natural beauty that transfers into music. the score allows a listener to feel the rain fall and see the wide forests and vast plains. this is one of menken's greatest scores second only to beauty and the beast.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs are all powerfully moving. this is a rare musical album in which all of the songs belong and fit brilliantly together. the only complaint is that some are too short and could have been extended, but they are still beautifully moving and emotional; more so than most disney films.
THE VIRGINIA COMPANY - this is the opener and is definately NOT the strongest in disney history, but it is still a solid song that encompases the optimism of the explorers of the time. the english influences here counter the native american ones that come later as well.
5 out of 5
THE VIRGINA COMPANY (REPRISE) - this is a nice little reprise but is too short to truly accomplish anything.
4 out of 5
STEADY AS THE BEATING DRUM - this is a beautifully melodeous piece that establishes the native american sounds for the first time. the chorus sounds beautiful and this piece contrasts the virginia company's well.
5 out of 5
STEADY AS THE BEATING DRUM - jim cummmings' voice is brilliantly cool and calm here and that makes this song a lovely one. if it was longer, it definately would have proven stronger though.
5 out of 5
JUST AROUND THE RIVERBEND - judy kuhn's vocals help this song to truly soar and make it a vocal beauty. its hard not to get cought up in the beauty here. the lyrics are both inspirational and moving as well.
5 out of 5
LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART I AND II - both pieces sound nearly identical and provide a serene and beautiful picture of native american music. the soft flowing vocals also help this to truly rise above the status of just another small little song
MINE, MINE, MINE - this is a song that sounds fun and catchy but give the lyrics a second listen and its a darkly comical piece that exposes the greed of ratcliffe and the "heroism" of john smith. wihtout seeing ratcliffe's greed here, the folowing song never would have been as effective ...
5 out of 5
COLORS OF THE WIND - this was the oscar winner for best song and it deserved it to say the least. some call this song preachy, but it is harrowing and brilliant with a message that holds true today. one must look past the superficial "white man evil" them and see the universality of the piece that applies today. the rhythms provided by menken only aid in the beauty along with kuhn's gorgeous vocals again.
5 out of 5
SAVAGES PART(S) 1 AND 2 - these both display the horrors of racism and the damage that it can cause. these both hold true today and come close to being too intense for a disney flick, but remain poignient and brilliantly relevent.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL 5 out of 5
the greatest part about this entire piece is the relevance that it holds today, that is a bit of a rarity for any piece, especially an animated feature. menken and schwartz proved to be an impressive team hereand made a great soundtrack that holds up with some of the greatest musicals ever. the power here is more understated then say the hunchback of notre dame, but is arguably more poignient.
btw i just wish the song if i never knew you as performed by mel gibson and judy kuhn was on here as well. their version as seen in the 2005 rerelease is beautiful as well its another 5 out of 5'er
Best Disney Score along with The Lion King, One of the Best Soundtracks Ever.......2006-10-05
This is one of my favorite soundtracks, and I believe it's one of the best soundtracks ever composed - my opinion based on my history of soundtrack listening of course, but it's a pretty long one.
If I Never Knew this soundtrack...........2006-04-16
We are working with the first collaboration of Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken. I find it sad that after Pocahontas & Hunchback, they never worked together again. A shame. I find Pocahontas and Hunchback the start of lyrics and stories appealing for kids and adults.
The Virgina Company--Every man's dream, during that time, they traveled for 3-4 weeks (depending on the weather) to a land they never seen before, not knowing what to expect, to make their dreams come true. Bringing back some gold.
The Virgina Company (Reprise)--Showing a bit more darker of a side for the setlers. All in all, a nice theme of mystery and fun.
Steady As the Beating Drum--This is a good song, not one of my favorites, but good beacuse they are actually doing something never really done. It was brought up in a sense in Beauty and the Beast (which took place in France), they are using language used by the people. Schwartz loves to do background work on what he is working with and he does it with style. He is using Native American dialogue for the chorus to sing. I think that is amazing.
Steady as the Beating Drum--It's like a Chinese Proverb. Though, Native American like, you know? I think it's beautiful. And once again Jim Cummings shows his amazing vocal talent to take on any role the studio(s) give him.
Just Around the Riverbend--The first of Pocahontas' songs. This one shows exactly "who she is". She is wild, spirited, and unsure of her future. Just like the river, she travels the path knowing not where it will lead her, but for the adventure.
Listen With Your Heart (pt 1)--Not one of my favorites, but I liked it as a kid. It works good as a foreshadowing scene on screen.
Mine, Mine, Mine--This song is amazing. It really shows Radcliffe's greed and that everything will not be going to the setlers but to him. After all, it's saying it's "his, his, his". And then the most shocking scene--Mel Gibson can sing. Give him the proper stuff and yeah, he can really belt it. I love his John Smith, talking and singing, it rules. It's such a great song, just listen to it and it'll be stuck in your head.
Listen to Your Heart (pt. 2)--Good, just not one of my favorites.
Colors of the Wind--I have two different feelings for this song. The first feeling I have is that it's such a powerful driven song (take it known that Judy Khun just got off from playing Cosette in the Broadway Les Mis?rables) it's beautiful to listen to. And the second feeling I have is that it sounds like something you'd hear Smokey the Bear say, "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires". I don't know, that usually pops in my head while I listen to it. Otherwise, this song is brilliant.
--Here, in the special edition of the film, was the song "If I Never Knew You". I love the song, and when finally seeing it as how it should be I was stunned on why it should have not been included in the movie. Mel Gibson can sing, even after being away from the role for so long... and Judy Khun, still sounds amazing, too! But I think it's such a treat seeing it added in. I would have not been so amazed now than if it was. I am surprised that they did not release a special edition of this CD for the release of the movie. Otherwise, you'd get "If I Never Knew You (Reprise)", which is not much, but good to hear.--
Savages (pt 1 & 2)--Emotional, amazing, it's like the finale of all Disney songs. Seeing it onscreen is also amazing, watching Pocahontas run to save the life of the man that she loves. I seem to feel as if Schwartz was giving a homage to West Side Story's "Tonight". Honestly, it sounds like it!
Then Menken gives a lovely, earthy, composed score. Personally, I love the "At The River's Edge" and "Farewell", it shows of everything that can be in a soundtrack--humour, romance, tragedy... it's all there. It's different, it's still amazing.
Colors of the Wind--I like Vanessa Willaims. She is an amazing singer and I think she sounds amazing singing this song. I remember watching her perform this on the "Today" show, and was just stunned on how she just resembled Pocahontas (understand I was 6 or 7). She does justice to the song.
If I Never Knew You (John Secada & Shanice)--I loved this when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite songs. I found it odd that they wrote a song that was not in the movie, yet it was played during the credits. I think I wore out my soundtrack because of this song. But if you do ever see the SE release of the film, the song is there, seemlessly placed back in.
In the end, you should get this soundtrack. Schwartz is amazing, Menken is amazing, the overall project is amazing. I still think Hunchback tops this by a mile, but for an underrated Disney movie, it was one of the better ones. :) Get it to complete your collection.

Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28
Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20
Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.
Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.
Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04
Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.
I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?

Disney Always Rocks.......2005-09-29
Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19
For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.
There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.
This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."
Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Album Description
The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland. The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? In this unprecedented 2-CD setfeaturing over 145 minutes of vintage recordings and 64 pages of lyrics, photos, notes and synopsisyou can discover how The Wizard of Oz entertained the American public for the first two decades of the 20th century. And like the audiences of nearly a hundred years ago, you can hum along to "Budweiser," "Sammy," and "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay"everyone's favorite songs from The Wizard of Oz! Also included in this comprehensive collection are recordings from later Oz musicals, The Woggle-Bug and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz written by Oz creator L. Frank Baum, as well as vintage non-Oz recordings by original "Wizard of Oz stars" Montgomery & Stone and Bessie Wynn

A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?
Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17
Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.
As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.
Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!
