Solid compilation.......2002-09-28
While I don't think this release is really ground-breaking, it does have some rather nice tracks. It was this album that I first heard La Boca Del Rio by S-Tone Inc., and Supermarket by the hard to find Russ Gabriel. While some of the tracks on this are questionable, all in all, this is a good compilation to add to the collection.
Solid release. Good for popping into the car and listening to on the way to the bar or club.

Still Groovin'.......2006-03-04
The cd starts out with Fertile Ground's "Peace & Love", remixed by Jazztronik of Japan. I really love the song - it has a psycodelic feel and aura to it. It's the perfect way to start up the music and reminds me of some times in the early summer of 2001... sort of strange. That's followed up with a pretty cool club mix of Bebel Gilberto's "Sem Contencao". In the mix like this, the track does hold it's own. I wasn't a fan of "Sick of Dancing", but Fauna Flash's "Alone Again" was a good track before slowing it down with a beautiful track by Victor Davies - "Sound of the Samba". I love the song, and I love the way that it moves into a more festive vibe in the mid-section of it. Following that up is perhaps my favorite track of the album - Russ Gabriel's "Supermarket". What a song... it's gives off a heavy nostalgic vibe, similar to the ambiance in the Fertile Ground opener. The other cuts on this that stood out were Massi's "Massi", and this cd was actually the first time I ever heard "La Boca Del Rio" by S-Tone Inc. On this album, it fit the mood tremendously.
I definitely would have to say that if you can find this one, pick it up. It was pretty influential for me at the time I got it as far as enjoying the music and seeing artists differen than those on other comps. And it was really out right before some of the artists started putting out remix albums and feature tracks in CD format or... just having feature releases in general (Russ Gabriel springs to mind!) Granted, not all songs grabbed me - like "Sick of Dancing" and some of the cuts in the end were lagging a little. But it's still a terrific compilation. If you like this, be sure to check out Brazilectro vol 2, ESL Jet Society and maybe have a look at Nova Latino 2 + 3, Boss-A-Troniq 2, Latin Deluxe: Dia em Noite and Brazilectro 3.

Good Compilation!.......2004-03-14
Having given some of those names, you know what to expect from this nu-Brazil cd that came out in 2001. Featured are legendary US jazz act Fertile Ground, Bebel Gilberto, Fauna Flash, Victor Davies, Russ Gabriel, Marcos Valle, S-Tone Inc. and a few other terrific musicians and groups. This is a mixed cd which starts out with a pretty cool electric samba before going into what was my favorite remix of Bebel Gilberto's "Sem Contencao". But the real gem on this cd to me is Russ Gabriel's "Supermarket". It's so incredibly nostalgic - it'll take you to a summer night where the weather is perfect and you're remember good summers in the past. The way the keyboard and guitar is played is breathtaking to me. The other fantastic cut was S-Tone Inc's "La Boca Del Rio". At the time of this cd, it was only available as a vinyl track and not included in their previous "Free Spirit" album. This was the first time I'd heard it and fell for it's infectuous beat and rythm.
I highly recommend this cd. This'll certainly get you energized for the evening and althoug there are only 12 cuts, the shortest song clocks in at a hair under 5 minutes! So this isn't like a radio edit hack job. The only downsides that I can think of was that the mixing wasn't always natural sounding, and not all of the cuts got me. ("Sick of Dancing" was actually the longest and most annoying IMO, and is the song that SHOULD'VE been hacked down) But there was some great star-power here, and of all the nu-brazil cd's out at the time this one definitely stood out to me. If you liked this, then check out Break N' Bossa vol 4 & 5, and look into the Nova Latino compilations (there are 3 of them now).
