Silly Wizard ... Scottish-style Celtic folk music .......2006-10-18
These guys are amazing. This marvelous compilation captures Silly Wizard at their rambunctious peak. Right away you'll notice vocalist Andy M. Stewart is at his very best, as are they all. The songs on this CD are wonderful. The Fisherman's Song is a haunting song about men being lost at sea and the wives & children they leave behind. Here is a bit of the lyrics.
"By the storm-torn shoreline a woman is standing
The spray strung like jewels in her hair
And the sea tore the rocks near the desolate landing
as though it had known she stood there.
Chorus:
For she had come down to condemn that wild ocean
for the murderous loss of her man,
His boat sailed out on Wednesday morning
And it's feared it's gone down with all hands."
This CD is great. Grab one you'll be glad you did!
Great Takes on Traditional Scottish Music.......2006-02-23
I bought The Best of Silly Wizard to get a copy of "The Valley of Strathmore," Andy Stewart's ballad done in the traditional style of Scottish music. The rest of the CD is just as fine. Makes one just pine for a wee bit of the Highlands!
A band with fire and soul!.......2004-01-01
I'm not sure this album represents all the "best" of Silly Wizard but it's an earthy, rollicking-good-romp all the same. Standout tracks include the rousing renditions of "Queen of Argyll" and "Donald McGillavry", the poignant "Valley of Strathmore" and "Finlay M. MacRae", and of course the virtuosic dances on tracks 3, 9 and 11. No booming bass here--the sound of this primarily accoustic band tends toward the treble side, featuring the finger-flying accordion playing of Phil Cunningham and the folksy tenor voice of Andy M. Stewart. But the well-crafted harmonic structures supporting their melodies are always engaging, holding a listener's attention and moving each piece along to a more than satisfying conclusion. Interestingly, like another of the group's Shanachie releases that I have ("Wild and Beautiful"), "Best of ..." begins with a wistful love song rather than an energetic dance set--a fitting opening considering the honest, heartfelt sentiment that Silly Wizard brings to their music. (I suppose the approach also hearkens back to the "days of yore", before albums were marketed via computer systems designed to grab maximum attention with only the first few listen-able tracks ...) On this recording, core group members Phil Cunningham, Andy M. Stewart, Martin Hadden and Gordon Jones are joined by guitarist Bob Thomas and fiddler Johnny Cunningham. For another "Best of"-style recording of this band's favorite works, try their 1988 Green Linnett recording, "Live Wizardry".
Worth every ounce of praise I can heap upon it........2003-10-02
I remember this album when it was first released in 1985 and in the 18 years since, I have found few albums in the genre that rival it. It is a fantastic selection of Silly Wizard's work. The "Queen of Argyll" is my absolute favorite love song of all time with lyrics like "All the roses in the garden bow and ask their pardon for not one could match the beauty of the Queen of all Argyll". If that doesn't conjure the image of a red haired Scottish beauty strolling in a garden or meadow, I don't know what does. Amazon gives us a space of 1,000 words to express our opinion in a review, but ten times that many praises might begin to express how I feel about this album ... even after all these years since I first heard it.
Appropriately titled! This is "The Best of Silly Wizard".......2003-01-23
I love this CD, in fact this is my second copy, having worn the other one out completely. When I need a pick me up, this is the CD I reach for!

Simply Awesome.......1999-10-20
I do not consider myself an expert on traditional Scottish music, but I do know what I like --and I love this album (and the Tannies!) It is one of my all-time favorites of any genre. Everytime I play it, I am blown away. And I play it often! Some highlights (and there are lots of highlightable moments here): "Atholl Highlanders/Johnny Cope" -- these two Jacobite songs are melded perfectly and, to put it as best I can, they ROCK! Also, there's the devestating, "Jamie Raeburn's farewell" -- one of very few Tannies songs to feature that non-traditional Scottish instrument, the electric Guitar. Heart-wrentchingly emotional. But these are just two great moments in an overall awesome collection.
This CD is a great introductioin to both Traditional Scottish music and the Tannahill Weavers. If you have any interest in Scottish/Celtic music, piping, or just plain good music, then get this CD!
WOW!!! Great music!.......1999-10-16
I saw these guys play in Charlotte Oct. 13 of this year, and Wow!! They are great! I'm a student piper, so I was simply amazed at the skill and speed of Duncan, the piper. The songs are great, every one of the men in Tannahill Weavers is very talented and you can see they not only just sing, but they sing with emotion, love and meaning. You will not be disappointed in any of their CD's. I guarantee that if you are a lover of scottish/irish music the slightest bit, you will fall in love with this group's soulful music.
Great folk music from the kings of the Highland pipes.......1998-11-04
When it comes to bagpipe music, the Tannies are far and wide my favorite. Superbly blended with the entourage of other traditional celtic instruments, these songs are truly inspiring and heartwarming. From the foot-thumping energy of Johhny Cope, to the powerful drama of Jamie Raeburn's Farewell, this album will surely raise your spirits and stir your soul! Forget all that new-age pseudo-celtic music that has flooded the market in recent years. If you want the best of traditional jigs and reels, this is where to find it. The _Best of_ is a perfect place for new listeners of the Tannies and new listeners of celtic music in general to start out. If this music doesn't have you out of your seat and dancing, you must be tied to the chair! Give it a listen!

Wonderful!.......2007-01-12
I can't rave enough about this CD. I'm just sorry that it took me so long to find it! The Corries were absolutely fantastic. You don't need to be Scottish to enjoy their music, but if you are Scottish this is a MUST.
i love the Corries :D.......2006-11-09
this is a mix of beautiful, authentic Scottish tunes by two of the greatest musicians i've ever heard. if you like the corries and; well, scotch or irish music in general, you might also try 'Planxty', 'Old Blind Dogs', 'the Cottars', 'the Fureys', 'Rankin Family', 'Mary Bergin' or the 'the Chieftains'. -the old blind dogs are scottish folk, all the others play mostly irish-folk tunes, but i still recommend listening to them if you are into scottish-folk ('Planxty' is a definite must)
Top notch! most excellent Scottish Music........2000-01-26
Truly, my favorite album of its vein, from the incredibly beautiful and sad "Peggy Gordon" (lovers of "I once loved a lass" will adore this one) "Colier Laddie" and "Kiss the children" wonderful tunes of lads and lassies gone work the mines and mills (I come from many poor Pensylvania coliers, working the dusky diamonds for the company store, so this is potent stuff!) I highly reccommend it to anyone intereted in some great Scottish music.

Customer Reviews:
Some of the Best in Scottish folk.......2007-04-23
An excellent introduction to the Battlefield Band, one of if not the premier Scottish folk groups. You can't go wrong here. And for those Irish folk music fans out there who might be put off by a previous reviewers claim that there is a vast difference between the two folk traditions, please give this album a try. You'll find much that you will like. To begin with, the various incarnations of the Battlefield Band have included Irish players and singers (Pat Kilbride comes to mind), and have included many Irish tunes and songs. Scottish and Irish music, owing to deep geographical, cultural, and historical ties, have always cross pollinated each other. There is an enormous body of song and melody, usually under variant titles, that both cultures hold in common. There are certainly distinct regional and national differences, which keeps the music interesting and vibrant, but even these do not produce any kind of hard and fast musical paradigm. The fiddle playing style of Donegal, for instance, is heavily influenced by the Scottish musical tradition, and embraces such manifestly Scottish musical forms as the strathspey and reel. Give Altan a listen to hear what I mean. Modern Scottish and Irish folk groups has done nothing if not accelerate this appreciation and assimilation of each others music. Try to find an album by any Celtic band you can think of that does not include at least some of both countries music. You'll discover that it is a difficult task. The place to start, of course, is with this album. Pick out the differences and similarities for yourself. It will be a rewarding process.
Great retrospective of one of Scotland's most enduring traditional music groups.......2006-11-05
For those who know Battlefield Band, this is a wonderful compilation
of some of their best music. For those who do not know the band, this
is a fabulous introduction, not only to Battlefield Band themselves
but to Scottish traditional and traditional-style music. Battlefield
Band were pioneers in the use of the great highland bagpipe in
ensemble play and this compilation showcases the great pipers that
have played with the band over the years.
Classic Scottish Folk - Nothing New for Long Time Fans.......2005-08-18
The Battlefield Band is one of the finest, and perhaps most authentic of the Scottish folk groups that is recording today.
Perhaps the initial reveiwer of this work, X-Man, does not understand that Battlefield Band is NOT an Irish group, and there is a vast, vast difference between Irish folk music and Scottish folk music. Not only are they from two different cultures, but the instruments and playing styles are completely different. To compare Battlefield Band to the Chieftans is like comparing a Porche Carerra and a Boxter - there maybe a superficial resemblance, but under the hood, the engines are completely different.
This collection is weak in a number of areas- favoring the instrumental pieces over the songs, and is missing some of my personal favorites, such as "The Snows of France & Holland," "I Am the Common Man," the haunting cover version of Sting's "We Work the Black Seam," as well as the anthem to Scottish liberty - "Montrose".
All in all, though - a good introduction to the group, but not worth buying if you've already got most of the discography - which can be said for any long-range retrospective album.
What a bunch of FREAKS........2005-05-13
Traditional Irish folk music gets spazmolagized again.
I long for the days of the 1970's and 80's when De Dannan, Planxty, The Bothy Band, The Furey Brothers (aka The Buskers), Boys of the Lough, Wolfe Tones, Davy Arthur, Danny Doyle, Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, etc. blessed the world with the most beautiful of traditional Irish folk music in its purest form.
Anyone loony enough to have the unmitigated gall to refer to this pile of bandicoot barf and epileptic caterwauling as Irish music - much less even liking it - would have to be a freaking retard with an IQ of somewhere below -74 with a bib around their neck to catch the drool.
Too short.......2004-01-24
A good compilation, but a better one would have been 2 CDs long (at least). Another flaw is the accompanying notes, in which the solo singers and instrumentalists for each track are not identified.

En Evocative Musical Escape to England.......2006-04-13
I bought this CD on a whim, and it far exceeded my expectations. Edward Flower's arrangements of these folk songs (most for two guitars) are truly exquisite; each piece is a miniature artistic gem, capturing the soulful, plaintive, and often melancholy mood of these timeless tunes. This is a great CD to put on when you want to relax. Just sit back with a cup of tea, close your eyes, and let your mind drift off to the quiet meadows, shady woods, and green rolling hills of England!

A Great Set of Tracks.......2004-02-28
I thought this CD was one of the best CD's I ever bought! Some of the songs are just strange, but some of them are basically quiet sounding jazzy songs. It's worth a listen, if not a buy!
Native cultures celebrated where their heartbeats overlap........1999-12-23
Indigineous music is hard to listen to sometimes because it is, by definition, specific to a native culture. Imagine, then, blending two radically different cultures' music together. Irish and Tibetan. Hopi and Polish. The combinations are bizarre. But the effect is a musical education of the best kind: With each song, I hear something more than just sound... I hear the celebration of diversity. None of that "he doesn't love me" junk lyrics -- this music captures the heartbeat of cultures. The Anglo-centrism of American music is ended. The world is merging, and this music gives us a clue to how beautiful it can be.

Customer Reviews:
yay celtic music.......2001-08-26
IF you like Celtic music, you'll enjoy this. It's not spectacular, but it's definitely soothing and well-done. The Thistle & Shamrock is an excellent radio show, and this is a good collection of songs that have been featured on it.
Lovely Voices and Melodies.......2000-05-30
This CD is worth it just for Maura O'Connell's version of "The Water Is Wide". It makes my heart stop evertime I hear it. The other songs are also wonderful - complex and soothing.
I look forward to volume 2!.......1999-11-10
Very enjoyable and wide ranging. Stirs all your emotions and brings you back home again. More please!
