Not even close to his best.......2003-05-27

... While this CD has some bright spots try and buy WA instead. That is the only other Akira CD I own and is leaps and bounds better than this. I own about 15 Loudness CD's and all of those are better than this. I would like to own other solo Cds but they are hard to find... Only get this CD if you are a die hard Akira fan.

Not Akira's best work.......2003-03-05

I first heard Loudness in the mid 80's and saw them in concert once.I was completely taken by the extreme talent and scope of Akira Takaski's playing.I own Tusk Of Jaguar and Wa and they are great CD's.However Made In Hawaii really falls short.There are a few moments of brilliance here but overall avoid this CD.The production seems muddy and uneven throughout this disc.Akira is a fine guitarist and fair bassist but he should leave the drumming to another.The vocals could be clearer too.I give this 2 stars and hope his next offering showcases his gifts better.

a true solo album.......2002-09-01

The bulk of this album is instrumental, and Akira takes on all duties (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) which, in my book, is what constitutes a real "solo" album.

I usually enjoy his guitar work: he's creative, versatile, and handles both the heavier and softer genres.

But this album generally bored me; there are, of course, some good moments. In this case, I preferred the softer tracks, which avoid the "drowned" sound of the (poor) drumming and the absence of (dull) vocals.

The occasional presence of "seagull and ocean waves" sounds were also a distraction; I gave this a few listening sessions, just to see if perhaps I was in a cranky mood...

There are a few gems on this CD, but unlike his other solo efforts, this one seems to have been recorded while he was in a depressive mood (or was it too many Pina Coladas?)

I don't like to be too severe in my reviews, but this time his effort seems "second-class", and some of the compositions are really basic and primitive.

I'll still be waiting for the next album anxiously, because he has talent. I suggest you borrow a copy from a friend before buying: it's not up to his usual standard...
