Before you declare something an antique, that is. The set is readily available in its original format, with full literature and artwork. There was room for improvement with sound balance, but ARTs are usually worse than the original! Jesus Bucket of Fried Chicken Christ, we're not that old!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs..........2006-12-27

I don't think I can add anything to Scott Morrison's brilliant review, except to say I got goosebumps the first time I heard Paint Me and replayed Not Even If I try about 10 times! I especially like the nocturnes for solo piano and "Sleep and Dream" for voice and piano. The solo piano arrangement of the second movement of the piano concerto is lovely and nearly as effective as the original. Only the Toccata is unconvincing, but I wonder how much of it is actually Oldham. Can't recommend this CD strongly enough, I refer to it constantly. A Desert Island Disc!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Composer Cruelly Cut Down Before His Time.......2004-03-02

Not all composers have the ability to write a memorable melody. Kevin Oldham had it in spades. I defy anyone to hear the second movement of his Piano Concerto, here played in a solo piano arrangement, and not have it linger in memory. The same is true for a number of the other works here, such as 'Sleep and Dream' from his unfinished opera, 'Thérèse Raquin.' Oldham (1960-1993) was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and the knowledge that he might not have long to live spurred him to turn his attention from his burgeoning career as a virtuoso pianist to that of composer. In the New York Times Oldham was quoted in 1992, less than a year before his death, as saying that when he knew he was dying he realized 'It's your work that must have a life of its own.' In a moving tribute to him in the CD booklet, Washington Post music critic Tim Page recounts Oldham's performance as pianist in the première of his own Piano Concerto only a few weeks before his death. A recording of the Concerto, made afterwards, features pianist Ian Hobson.

This CD was obviously a labor of love for its participants, many of them friends of the composer. The primary contributor, playing on all but the last selection which is of Oldham himself playing in recital in 1986, is the sensitive and skilled pianist, Karen Kushner, perhaps best known as Igor Kipnis's partner in the Kipnis-Kushner piano duo. She plays a number of solo works, including the iridescent and multilayered 'Ballade,' written for her New York recital début. The impressionistic Sarabande had to be transcribed from a tape of the composer playing it, and its companion piece, the spikily obsessive Toccata, left unfinished at his death, was completed seamlessly by Steve Cohen. The two Scriabinesque Nocturnes feature delicate filigree but also have hints of Mahlerian melancholy. The solo transcription of the Andante tranquillo movement of Oldham's Piano Concerto was done by Lawrence Rosen. It is played gorgeously, with great nuance and lushly romantic feeling by pianist Kushner. When I first got this CD several years ago I found myself putting this band on repeat and immersing myself in its serene beauty.

Written in his teens, the three songs set to the 'Gaspard de la Nuit' poems of Aloysius Bertand reflect but do not copy Ravel's well-known piano work inspired by the poems. They are effectively sung (and acted) by soprano Susan Rosenbaum. The complex piano accompaniment is handled nicely by Kushner, particularly in the undulations of the opening song, 'Ondine,' and in the fleet 'Scarbo.' A achingly touching love-song, to Oldham's own words, is 'Not Even If I Try,' sung movingly by tenor Carl Halvorson. 'Across the Sea,' also to words by the composer ['I know a place where my heart has built a home ... across the sea'], can only be heard as a metaphor for Oldham's eventual fate. It is sung eagerly by Rosenbaum; the breathtakingly presto piano accompaniment is done with aplomb by Kushner.

There are three selections from Oldham's 'Thérèse Raquin,' set to his own words after Zola's novel. 'Sleep and Dream,' with its wistfully hopeful lyric, is sung by soprano Camellia Johnson. The dramatic aria, 'Paint Me', is sung thrillingly by soprano Maria Russo. The trio, 'Row, I Love to Row,' sung by the opera's ultimately tragic love triangle of Laurent, Thérèse and Camille, is dramatically apt and a bit overlong; it probably would have been reshaped by the composer had he lived to finish the opera. Russo and Halvorson are joined by baritone Andrew Schroeder.

The final selection on this disc is from a tape of a live performance Oldham gave as part of the Chicago Public Library's Dame Myra Hess Recital Series in 1986. It is a set of variations on an old French Christmas carol, 'Noël nouvelet, Noël chantons ici.' There is some tape hiss and crowd noise but one doesn't care because this is a blisteringly virtuosic performance of a 10-minute set of variations that shows off not only Oldham's pianistic fireworks but also his ability to write a set of polystylistic variations that could easily find a place in the repertoire of adventurous pianists.

Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Like You Just Stepped Into A Salon.......2002-03-10

Opera Rara's Il Salotto series documents the salon music of the 19th century. It's a change from Opera Rara's usual heady fare, and this edition is perhaps the most light-hearted so far. It focuses on music that would have been performed by amateurs and not by the operatic stars that often were invited to the salons of the fabulously wealthy. Of the 32 songs documented here, 27 appeared in a forgotten and short-lived Neapolitan journal "Il Sibilo" from 1843-1845. Every second issue had a song by a well-known composer printed on the back page. Among the composers represented were Donizetti, Pacini, and Mercadante. Other figures such as Cammarano, Lillo, and Crescentini, who are less familiar, were also featured.

Since the songs were printed on a single page, they are very short-only a few of the tracks actually make the two minute mark. They are great fun, and demand very little of the listener. Yet they are not insubstantial as artistic accomplishments. The words and music are invariably clever, and more than one of them has the barbed point of an O. Henry story - witness the charming little melody that accompanies a wish for the singer's ex-lover to choke to death on a morsel of food, or the fervent ode to a woman's beauty that ends with an accusation of frigidity.

The singers approach these little delicacies with such enthusiasm that one can almost close one's eyes and imagine being in a warm, inviting salon surrounded by laughter, animated conversation, and of course, good music. Sopranos Nuccia Focile and Donata D'Annunzio Lombardi sing with grace and beauty while still capturing the light-heartedness and intimacy of these ditties. Paul Charles Clark is a rather whiny tenor of the Maurice Arthur ilk, but his captivating hamminess in his selections more than compensates for what he may lack in vocal beauty. Bass Ildebrando d'Arcangelo, the excellent and strikingly handsome Opera Rara regular, uses his rich and expressive voice to advantage. The pianist, David Harper, who is also featured in the other Salotto releases, continues in this series his tasteful and highly expressive accompaniment of this forgotten fare. He coaxes melodies from the keyboard with sensitivity and emotional intelligence; yet there is genuine humor and a sense of mischievous fun in his playing - which makes him the perfect choice to accompany these tongue-in-cheek pieces.

Jeremy Commons provides detailed and interesting notes, which not only discuss the fascinating history of `Il Sibilo', but also chronicle his own accidental rediscovery of the journal and these very songs in 1972. English translations and commentaries are provided on all the songs. The booklet and box are most luxurious, with beautiful, brilliantly colored art reproductions and vibrant color photography of the recording sessions in progress. Even the CD itself is embossed with the music from one of the Pacini songs. This is a sumptuous release that spares no expense, but you can listen to it in bite-sized morsels or - more likely - to the whole thing in a sitting. And you may find yourself thinking of converting a room in your own home into a salon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blown away........2004-11-10

This is one of the most amazing choral music cds I have ever listened to. Truly amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2003-10-30

This is a stunning album that sets a new standard for youth choruses. Every piece in this collection was commissioned by the Young People's Chorus of New York City, and the composers are world-class. In fact, Michael Torke's "Song of Ezekiel" was just awarded 2003 Best Octavo of the year by the Music Publisher's Association. It's a gorgeous piece. I also love the John Tavener and the Elena Kats-Chernin pieces. Choral directors will be interested to know that all of these compositions are available in print.

The voices blend beautifully and the production values are high. Each time I listen to this CD I discover new things I like about it. Although I might appreciate the Walter Thompson better live than as a recording, the album as a whole is a pleasure to listen to. I'm amazed that these teenagers have achieved such a high level of artistry.

Also, the helpful liner notes have remarks by each composer, explaining how they went about creating their commission and how they related to the youthful choristers and the idea of writing specifically for voices that are transient. This is an interesting window onto the composers' creative processes.

If you like choral music and want to hear some beautiful new work, get yourself a copy of Transient Glory.

This CD is worth getting for the sincere, emotional writing which is often very beautiful. I especially like the choral works, but the organ symphony has many powerful moments as well. A fine tribute to a composer who was tragically snuffed out before his time!
