Blaze of Glory.......2007-06-08
I never thought I'd be able to find this CD but Amazon had it and it was shipped very fast. Great album. Just a great album with great songs from the movie which was a clasic western.
Must own for BJ fans.......2007-05-07
This album is in my top 3 favorite Bon Jovi albums (even tho it is a solo record). In this record, you really get to hear just how powerful and gifted Jon's vocals are (with some exceptions - such as in NJ - usually only demonstrated live) - Santa Fe solidified in my mind, the assertion that Jon Bon Jovi was one of the most gifted singers in rock & pop music with very few people (in rock/pop) able to come close to his vocal abilities.
CD.......2006-11-06
My Mom & I have listened to both of the Bon Jovi Albums and we like both "Have a Nice Day" & Cross Roads. We have listened to them both once and we love them.
Soundtrack To Lame Western Movie Actually Has Deeper Cautionary Message.......2006-10-08
BLAZE OF GLORY is not a Bon Jovi album, but rather Jon Bon Jovi and session players doing the soundtrack of the terrible Emilio Estevez film YOUNG GUNS II. However, don't let that deter you from buying this album, because for an album associated with such a lame movie, the music and lyrics are of remarkably high quality. The lyrics seem at first to be standard Old West fare, but if your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids and B-vitamins is ample, you can tell without reading the lyric sheet- in other words, by just listening VERY HARD- that there is a deeper meaning to them. The songs actually form a cautionary suite that warns against getting into dangerous situations of ANY kind, inspiring me to never go anywhere without telling someone where I'll be, as well as influencing my predilection for putting up photos of pretty actresses on my wall as a deterrent to self-indulgent behavior. If I had not believed this interpretation of the lyrics, I would not be living on my own right now. If you've just gotten your first apartment, or are getting ready to, you MUST buy this album. It's Jon Bon Jovi's first truly serious work, presaging KEEP THE FAITH by two years, making it a pivotal moment in his career.
Solid Gold.......2006-09-30
It's hard to classify this album in a genre, but musically it is a benchmark album that sets a standard that few can reach. What sets it apart from Bon Jovi (the band) records, is that it doesn't sound so polished and commercially viable. This is real, heartfelt compilation of songs that speak of life and anyone with a soul could relate to a few of these. "Santa Fe" is one of the greatest songs, lyrically and musically, that I have ever heard. It takes you to a state of mind that few songs do. The movie was decent, but it pales in comparison to this album. I wouldn't buy this album because of the movie, i would buy the movie because of the album.

Can't recommend it.......2007-07-03
I can't recommend this recording unreservedly. Mr. Padmore's voice seems hard pressed and tremulous in some of the arias, and his Italian is un-idiomatic. His diction is superb, in both the English and Italian arias, and the choice of repertoire is adventurous, but I will stick to Robert White.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-06-23
PADMORE HAS ARRIVED!!!!!Gramophone writes: "Mark Padmore uses his extraordinary diction and whispering chamber-like intimacy to remind us that the most exalted tenor arias from the operas and oratorios can achieve true potency even out of context..." To which I heartily agree. This is truly a wondrous portrayal of the many and varied moods of Handels' works. The tenor roles on this disc stretch between Handel's first and last oratorios, and most of them share a philosophy that implies that the dire consequences of personal pride, emotional selfishness, political ambition and sexual lust are amended by virtue and reason.
Padmore has always excelled with his velvet-toned tenderness, such as is displayed on this disc in "Where'er You Walk" from Semele and Jephtha's seraphic "Waft Her Angels". However, in this album he shows that he has acquired a stength and Italian vibrancy in his tone quality as he sings Jeptha's victory aria: "His Mighty Arm" and Bajazet's magnificent death aria :"Figlia mia-Tu spietato" from Tamerlano. I have never heard this death aria sung as well by anyone!!!!And, of course , the lovely melody, so beautifully performed by Padmore and Lucy Crowe is the 'crown' on this album: 'As Steals the Morn'.
Mark Padmore can be listed with the best of the present day tenors. And Andrew Manze with his sensively implemented accompaniment; just perfect!!!I would be remiss if I did not mention the very attractive packaging of the disc as well as the accompanying information; very superior.
Without peer....!.......2007-06-14
I fully agree with the listener above, this is some of the most beautiful and expressive Handel singing in a very long time. I sat in rapture between my two B&W's. Mark Padmore has just raised the bar and Andrew Manze and the English Concert support with playing of stunning virtousity....warm enveloping engineering and you most certainly have a disc to treasure. Please don't hesitate if you love Handel!!
Best Tenor Handel Singing Ever.......2007-06-13
We are in a Golden Age of Handel singing with Andreas Scholl, Daniel Taylor, Vivica Genaux, Ewa Podles and others making baroque music popular again. If you don't own any Lorraine Hunt Lieberson singing Handel (especially with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra) buy some today. But buy it alongside this disc. "As Steals the Morn" stole my heart. This is without a doubt the best tenor disc of Handel arias ever. WIth the women and the countertenors great versions of almost everything that Handel wrote abound. Padmore is in a class by himself among tenors singing this music. The singing is beautiful and heartfelt. This would join my Callas Tosca and Scotto Butterfly on a desert island.

INDITING OF A GOOD MATTER.......2006-07-08
For many years I've been looking for my ideal version of Handel's great Zadok the Priest, and I'm somewhere near it at last. So far as this performance goes, I may actually have got there, all I miss in this account is a little more vividness in the recorded sound. As far as the rest of the disc goes, I have no complaints or reservations at all. The four coronation anthems are given this time in the sequence Zadok, Let thy hand be strengthened, The King shall rejoice and My heart is inditing. Opinions vary as to the appropriate order for them, but obviously if you take a different view of the matter it is very simple to sequence them however you think best. The balance of the disc is taken up with an earlier work, a birthday ode for Queen Anne, probably composed for that monarch's 48th birthday in 1713.
Back to Zadok. Please forgive a possible appearance of dogmatism if I say that the tempo is absolutely right. Cleobury's speed here is much as I remember it from the recording of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It may be faster than one is used to, but there is a very good reason for it. Even at this speed, that spine-tingling orchestral introduction takes a full minute and 20 seconds to reach the great choral chords, and it measures out the tread of the monarch and consort, one stately pace to every four notes, as they advance towards the altar steps in Westminster Abbey, the choral outburst coming as they arrive at them. The choral tone here is very full and grand. I would have been interested to know whether Cleobury has used a larger chorus at this point than later - on one occasion Handel is known to have had 500 performers in Zadok. There are certainly not 500 here, and Handel's choral writing can convey an impression of multitudes even with a smallish choir. From this point on the chorus is appropriately small, clear in its diction and even, to my delight, producing a trill on `ever'. The other three anthems are beautifully done and beautifully recorded. There are various Alleluias in the first three including Zadok, and here, as in the great chorus in Messiah, Handel scans the word sometimes as All-e-LU-ia and sometimes as All-eh-EH-lu-IA. He learned the latter way of doing it from Purcell, and 150 years after Handel's anthems Brahms uses it again in his great Triumphlied celebrating the battle of Sedan.
The words to the birthday ode are by Ambrose Phillips. They are the usual sycophantic rubbish, but `twas ever thus. In days of old such toweringly great poets as Horace and Pindar had turned out equally wince-making sentiments, they just expressed them a lot better. The music is another matter, being simply exquisite. I have been familiar with these three soloists in Handel for a couple of years now, and what a pleasure it is to listen to such perfect singing and perfect sense for the composer's style. The opening number is a heavenly duet for counter-tenor and trumpet. I was very let down at not seeing the trumpeter credited in the liner. It may be Crispian Steel-Perkins (it's good enough to be him) but we are not told. The choir of King's, the Academy of Ancient Music and the director need no introduction by now, and are at their superlative best throughout.
The liner-note, by Anthony Hicks, is helpful, informative and readable, and is given in German and French as well as in English, as are the texts to the music. The recording is really very good too, except that I was eager for just that last ounce of `presence' at the start of Zadok that would have made this disc absolutely perfect for me. The set dates from 2001 I see, so perhaps it will be reissued sometime with a little remastering, fulfilling one of my remaining aspirations in this life.
Stellar.......2006-03-09
As a Handel enthusiast, I can't think of any way this recording could be less than perfect. As another reviewer has noted, this disc features a brilliantly-executed Ode for Queen Anne's Birthday in addition to the four Coronation anthems. The tempo for "Zadoc the Priest" is the fastest I've heard, and that speed heightens the drama of Handel's score. That Cleobury and company can perform it thus without losing any richness of tone or color -- indeed, excelling in those very areas -- testifies to the quality of this recording.
Crowning Achievement.......2005-09-30
If you only have room for one recording of the Coronation Anthems in your collection, this CD will do splendidly. It's pure, lively and 100% fresh Baroque and the chorus really gets into the act. The heavenly harmonies of "My heart is igniting..." and "Upon Thy Right Hand..." are royal pleasure. But as if this wasn't enough, this disc also contains the Ode for Queen Anne, and with it, the most perfect version of Eternal Source of Light Divine I have heard to date. This is one of Handel's most beautiful pieces, but it is not an easy one to nail; it was written for a countertenor, plus you need a great trumpet player- it is a trumpet-voice duet after all. While I enjoyed James Bowman's spirited rendition, I cringed while listening to many versions recorded by high, warbling sopranos- in particular, Kathleen Battle and Edita Gruberova have transposed this one up and out beyond recognition. But here we have Robin Blaze, a countertenor previously unknown to me, giving us an Eternal Source that is truly ethereal, sunlit and sung by a voice that is outstanding by itself and perfectly blended with that trumpet. And, after a beginning like that, the rest of the Ode actually lives up to the high standard.
King shall rejoice and so shall anybody who listens to this CD.
Professionalism.......2005-07-20
This CD of Handel's Coronation Anthems shows the Choir of King's College Cambridge at its true professional height. The music is lively and tuned to perfection. This recording allows both serious and amateur listeners the chance to experience Handel's music as it should be heard.
Simply Amazing!.......2004-03-16
While I am no monarchist, I am entranced by the heavenly beauty of this version of Handel's Coronation themes.
As a music piece the selections from this compilation should be deservidly included with other masterpieces such as Mahler's Resurection, and Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.
This recording is very much worth the money!!

A ndres DVDs get better, an excellent show in wonderful surroundings, I have his latest.
Content Excellent but marred by poor video........2006-04-18
I was dissapointed in this video from the viewpoint of very poor video quality. Barely on a par with VHS. I have a 480P front projector with an 80" diagonal picture and it was unwatchable on that system I had to view it on my 36" tv to have an acceptable picture and even then it was not great. I have several Andre Rieu videos and have never run into that before. According to other reviews Denon has put out a very poor product this time.
The show itself is terrific as Andre always is.
The Flying Dutchman.......2006-04-06
Excellent CD to listen to and relax, to listen while I'm working, and at any time of the day. Andre Rieu is good music!
Wonderful Performance.......2006-03-03
Andre's Flying Dutchman was a delight to watch. Filmed in Limberg, this concert is beautifully pieced together with a lovely array of music. The voices of his beautiful soloists add to the atmosphere of this wonderful concert. Something I would highly recommend.

Marx and Lenin probably would not have appreciated the irony, but after decades of Communist repression of religion, the former Soviet bloc is the source of a profound outpouring of explicitly Christian expression. This is manifested in the music of such composers as Henryk Gorecki, a Pole, and Arvo Pärt, an Estonian. Part, a refugee from serialism, here writes in a quasi-minimalist style that he calls "tintinnabuli," a sound that echoes medieval composition. A fan of vocal music ("The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all"), he uses choruses to superb effect. This disc includes some of his best work, including the popular Magnificat, beautifully rendered by the Theatre of Voices under Paul Hillier. --Sarah Bryan Miller
Customer Reviews:
a great combination, part and hilliard.......2004-06-21
i purchased this CD recently and was a bit worried. i enjoy part and hillard, but the length of the pieces was often so short. i really enjoy it when part writes long, epic pieces and the vocal work really explores all types of music.
instead, what i found was a collection of many small gems, each of which combine to form the larger work i was looking for. i'm not particularily religious, but i find the deep spiritualism in part's work to be profound and soothing. this disc is no exception, as part and hillaird explore religion, theology and philosophy through music and voice.
this CD is well arranged and orchestrated, and ranks among the best of any of part's works. i've been leary of hearing part work outside of the ECM new series of recordings, but i'm happy i explored. few pairings work as well as hillaird and part, i'm thankful they share their work.
Beautiful and Profound.......2004-02-06
I picked up this wonderful gem on a whim. As sacristan for my Jesuit university campus ministry, I was looking for good and movintg religious music. This surpasses anything being marketed as "liturgical" music for churches.
Part creates music that is beatiful, moving and profound. It transported me to another world; it is a deeply moving experience. Some of these tracks have already become my favorite works of musical art as well as meditative prayers.
Power and Grace.......2002-01-10
Hillier's Theatre of Voices gives an absolutely wonderful rendering of Pärt's work. The music is amazing, recalling medieval choral music as well as contemporary ideas in musical composition. Pärt manages to touch on a wide range of feeling throughout all of these compositions, conveying emotion while maintaining the kind of austerity of sound found in medieval chant. Ultimately, the CD provides a moving and enjoyable listening experience. I would recommend it to both seasoned fans of choral music and neophytes alike.
Rich, lovely, unmatched music.......2001-07-23
This music is gorgeous, whether you think you like choral music or not.
The first time I heard Arvo Part, I was browsing in a music store and stopped to listen with a pair of crummy headphones. The sounds and tone drew me into another world, one made lovely by the rich and carefully-worked composition of a master.
The recording is perfect. The music is like nothing else I've heard, more deeply-felt and inspiring than anything I'm familiar with. I would not call myself a fan of choruses, but Part's work is extraordinary.
Classical music is not dead.......2000-05-18
For anyone who thought that "classical" music had been killed by atonal dissonance or kidnapped into the absurd esoteria of academic abstraction, I recommend the music of Avro Part. Similar in style to another (some would say 'THE' other) great modern composer Gorecki, the music is heavy and religious in tone and absolutely beautiful. I was an immediate convert to Part's music, and, from what I can tell, I am not alone.

Experience the glory of early Renaissance sacred polyphony .......2006-12-08
If you want to experience early Renaissance sacred polyphony in all its glory, one of the best places to start is this scintillating recording of Guillaume Dufay's "Missa L'homme arme" by the Oxford Camerata. This vocal consort, led by Jeremy Summerly, has been a leading light in the early music vocal scene, having recorded several other remarkable works for the Naxos label (William Byrd's "Masses for Four and Five Voices" comes to mind).
"Missa L'homme arme" represented a comeback of sorts for Dufay (1397-1474). Years earlier, Dufay had become the first composer to base a Mass Ordinary cycle on a secular song (his own "Se la face ay pale"). The generation of composers that followed Dufay tried to outdo each other by composing Masses based on the short, catchy "L'homme arme" melody. By writing his own "Missa L'homme arme," Dufay rose to the challenge issued by mid-15th century composers of sacred music.
Dufay's entry was late but significant. His Mass employed several newer techniques, including retrograde and inverted cantus firmus, which allowed him to compete with younger, progressive composers such as Ockeghem and Busnoys. For Dufay, "Missa L'homme arme" was a chance to show he could still compose a virtuoso Mass with the best of them, and he succeeded gloriously, re-affirming his stature as the pre-eminent composer of the century.
Unlike the upbeat pop tune that inspired this Mass (which appears as the first track here), Dufay's movements unfold smoothly and gradually, like undulating waves. Voices emerge in ghostly motifs that faintly echo the main theme (or cantus firmus), most dramatically in the "Agnus Dei" movement. Here, Dufay's original score bears the note, "The crab proceeds whole but returns half." This cryptic phrase indicates how Dufay manipulated the cantus firmus: the "L'homme arme melody" is stated backward, in half-time, before beginning over again forwards and in standard time.
The performance of the Oxford Camerata is excellent throughout this recording, which also includes the motet "Supremum est mortalibus." Through the Camerata's heavenly voices, Dufay's Mass achieves an otherworldly, timeless beauty that will impress scholars and astonish casual listeners. This is truly a work for the ages.
DA VIRTUTIS MERITUM.......2004-11-09
Dufay's life seems to have been entirely within the 15th century. He was based at the abbey of Cambrai and seems to have enjoyed a wide reputation spreading as far as Scotland, where one of the manuscripts of this mass survives. The mass is a large-scale work, with a Sanctus lasting over ten minutes (which is a lot longer than, say, Verdi's), and an Agnus Dei taking well over eight. To complete the set there is a motet 'Supremum est mortalibus bonum' dating from the 1430's, and one very intriguing feature of this disc is the presence of an unharmonised 'Veni sancte spiritus' (sung to a popular tune) after the Gloria and two plainsong items 'Jubilate Deo' following the Credo and 'Illumina tu faciem' right at the end after the Agnus Dei. Sadly there is no illumination of this in the liner-note, which is really the most frightful guff saying next to nothing and saying it rather badly. Provisionally I have to assume that these numbers (all short) were sung at appropriate points during the celebration of the mass, otherwise what is the point of sequencing them in this way on the record? What I would have liked some guidance on is whether the composer envisaged these extras as integral parts of the setting of the mass - e.g. do they occur in the manuscripts, of which there are no fewer than four? Evidently I shall have to research this question elsewhere.
I am an admirer of the Oxford Camerata in general. As in their record of Josquin's mass based on the same chanson, there are 12 singers, those male these feminine as Milton puts it, numbering 7 and 5 respectively. I have read some comment that finds them prone to over-slow tempi, but I have been used to 15th and 16th century ecclesiastical polyphony all my life from childhood, and while I have no pretensions at all to being expert on the subject I suppose I can say that I find nothing untoward in any aspect of the Camerata's approach. The recording is predictably good, and the strength of the vocal tone impressed me.
English translations of the Latin are provided for everything here. These are in general accurate, although it is worth pointing out that towards the end of the Veni sancte 'Da...sacrum septenarium' means literally 'grant seven holy years', and 'da salutis exitum' means unequivocally 'grant final salvation'.
A Great Recording of Dufay's Mass Plus.......2002-03-08
Dufay was the music master of the early Renaissance, and this disc contains his mass setting of the greatest hit of the later middle ages and Renaissance, "L'homme arme", plus recordings of the song itself as well as chants and motets utilizing the tune as their basis, worked in among the mass setting pieces. However, lest potential buyers think they are getting some kind of new agey, fluffy music here, this recording works very hard to be authentic, and the performance is more powerful than serene, more earthy than spacey, and majestic in a very medieval way. Summerly and company get these works very right.

Brilliant Jackson.......2007-03-31
This is an immensely listenable album. The tunes are catchy, orchestration beautiful and the production values are outstanding.
"Blaze of Glory" demonstrates all facets of Jackson's immeasurable talent - singer, musician, composer, orchestra leader and producer.
Simply a wonderful listening experience.
An admirable but ultimately unsuccessful effort.......2006-06-29
Taking an artistic risk is typical for Joe Jackson, an artist who refuses to be placed in a category. But BLAZE OF GLORY does not work for me. Starting with the anthem "Tomorrow's World" which sounds like something Starship would do, Jackson constantly reaches for a grand statement about life and the pain and joy that touches us all, but through a number of curious musical choices the theme falls flat. Bouncing around from pop to jazz to Greek influenced instrumental (?), the music lacks the focus to move the story forward. I ended up being more distracted by the music then being moved by it. The songs are also designed to lead from one to another which will also lead to a jarring dissonance. Lyrically the anger and pain is well expressed but there is a sense of "heard this before" that kept me from wholeheartedly following along. Even the title track is strangely reminiscent in theme to a number of other "Burned out before they fade away" songs. I can see by some of the other reviews that this CD has touched others deeply, but I found myself unmoved by the trials and tribulations within.
Says many things we'd rather not hear..........2006-06-26
The recording industry would like to prolong, for as long as possible, that reckless period of our lives where music can absorb us completely. During that time life seems endless, infinitely extendable, and burgeoning with promise. Nothing stands in our way. Music has the ability to feed this beast while simultaneously feeding record labels that release products to prolong the illusion. It seems to work. Consequently, not many pop albums deal with the problems of growing up, and many pop artists wouldn't dare challenge the premises of youth culture. After all, "the dream" is at stake.
Maybe that explains why Joe Jackson's brilliant "Blaze of Glory" remains sorely neglected. This album smears the reality of adulthood squarely in the face of idealistic youth. It says many things that people don't want to hear, basically, that love fades, youth crumbles, technological progress may not bring us unending happiness, our country may not be what we think, and many of us fade away forgotten. This album aims to deliver a big dose of reality, but the music remains so great throughout that the rather bummer themes don't take center stage. For example, "Nineteen Forever", which hit number 16 in the US, delivers such strong pop hooks that the subtheme of denial stays in the shadows. The video featured Jackson aging rapidly and then crumbling to dust. And the amazing instrumental "Acropolis Now" flails its stinging electric guitars in the face of any questioning. But soon the questions bellow too loud to ignore.
"Tomorrow's World", the album's opener, outright mocks unchecked faith in progress: "No one will die in tomorrow's world and miracles will happen soon". But later, in stark contrast, "Sometimes I think we should be sending out an SOS, but mostly I just think of all the things that I can't wait to see". "Down to London", one of Jackson's best songs, fuels the dreams fired by the big city: "Gone down to London to be the king". Lastly, closing out the first section of the album (read the verbiage in the lower right corner of the CD's back cover), "Blaze of Glory" pits our everyday ideals against the status of legend: "but he went out in a blaze of glory and you and I just fade away." We create legends (they wouldn't exist without legions of loyal fans), feed them, sometimes destroy them, and we may also resent them because we're not them.
The second part of the album nearly encompasses four of the classic stages of grief. "Rant and Rave" spews with anger; "Nineteen Forever" deals with denial; "The Best I Can Do" features a person bargaining with a loved one; the beautiful "Human Touch" feels like a resolution full of acceptance. "Evil Empire" will play like heresy to some. It turns Ronald Reagan's reference to the Soviet Union on its head (at the time the Reagan era and the Cold War were nearly over). But it also contains themes that still resonate today. By the end of part two the idealism has faded. Dreams of immortality get replaced by resigned lines such as "You know we're nothing in the scheme of things just microchips and big machines" and "In all the universe I'm just a speck of dust but all I can do is keep trying...."
The album follows a breathtaking tour of musical styles and instrumentation as its themes flow by. In this way it slightly resembles its predecessor, "Big World". But "Blaze of Glory" presents a more unified whole both thematically and musically. The styles here meld into one another almost effortlessly until they end with a heartbreaking climax. Pop music rarely gets this good.
Joe Jackson left A&M after this album and continued his career on pretty much the same path. 1991's "Laughter & Lust" received some heavy airplay and 1999's "Symphony No. 1" received acclaim from the music world. He has also recently criticized smoking bans in New York City (which non-smokers likely won't sympathize with). His opinions on the subject are posted on the offical Joe Jackson website.
"Blaze of Glory" stands as one high point in Jackson's long varied career. Though not hailed as a classic by the music press at large, many stumble across this album on their own and become hopelessly addicted. The incredible music and poignant themes continue to speak very loudly to some.
Pehaps the GREATEST album EVER..........2005-12-31
I own well over 5,000 CDS...and, at one time, owned as many vinyl albums. The music that I've acquire over the years ranges from rock to pop to jazz to classical to baroque to opera to country/western to folk to ambient to...well, just about anytthing that's done well. That said, this album of Joe Jackson's is probably my most favored album in my entire collection.
My first exposure to this album's material came one summer's evening while visiting a friend in Los Angeles. My friend had a rehearsal for a play in which he was acting, and I was left to with the playground of L.A. at night with which to amuse myself. Failing to score a ticket to see Michael Crawford in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, I noticed that Joe Jackson was playing a show at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theater. At that time my familiarity with Jackson's music was casual at best (mainly knowing those handful of songs that received radio play). Still, it sounded like an evening of possibilities. I had no idea just what would be awaiting me...
The first half of Joe Jackson's show was devoted entirely to Jackson and his stellar band playing the BLAZE OF GLORY album from start to finish. I was immediately captive from what I was hearing. The next day, as soon as the record shops opened, I made my way to a store to pick up a cassette of this album. It was the only album that I played on the long trek of Highway 5 from Los Angeles back to my home in the Bay Area.
This album has it all.....rock, jazz, pop, folk, world-music, shades of opera...and often pays homage to various eras of rock. Besides having a palette of musical styles unlike any album that I've ever come across, this work also contains some of the most heartfelt and passionate lyrics that any songwriter has ever placed on an album. One would have to have a heart of stone to remain unmoved after hearing songs such as "Human Touch" or "Sentimental Thing." While rocking with a fury, there is also a majestic nobility to powerhouse songs such as "Down to London" and the title song "Blaze of Glory" (perhaps the best Who song never written/played by The Who).
One might think that such a wide range of musical styles would result in something of a mutt of an album. Not even. Each song is linked to one another, barely giving one a chance to catch a breath before being launched into an entirely new and vibrant world/style of music. Musically, lyrically and emotionally this album has it all.
Since that night at the Wiltern, I've made a point of getting all of Joe Jackson's releases. There is no denying that he is one of music's most underrated performers. Still, as great as his work prior and since BLAZE OF GLORY has been, nothing comes close to this work. This is Joe Jackson's final hour. I would implore any and every one who loves and appreciates music at its very finest to get a hold of this album...it will not disappoint! Really, this is as good as music gets...and has remained my very favorite album for close to two decades.
Jackson at his best.......2005-11-05
Joe Jackson is far from the typical new wave rocker his first 2 or 3 albums pegged him as. He's proven over time to have a versatility few of his peers can match. This album, while not as pop as Look Sharp or I'm the Man, is one of his most ambitious, every bit as wide-ranging and genre-bending as Night and Day or Big World. It's a shame it's out of print, but unfortunately, A&M lost sight of a lot of their true artsts when the company was swallowed up by Polygram. For what it's worth, Jackson himself, in his excellent book "A Cure For Gravity," names this album and Night and Day as his two best works....that alone should make it worth a listen.

Getting to know 14th.century music.......2000-08-14
This recording of early music is wonderful in its sound quality and acoustics. It is truley a masterpiece. Just keep in mind that music of this period is not the bright or danciful folk tunes often heard in 16th or 17th.century folk songs. This recording is of the developing formal mass and represents the highest level of performing skills of the period.
Mind blowing Machaut!.......2000-03-17
Last year I did my Masters' dissertation on Mediaeval Scholasticism and discovered this CD at about the same time. I played it softly on my CD player as I walked the 'via dolorosa'. The CD helped me do very well because I feel it has a unique Mediaeval/Renaissance crossover feel that enabled me to internalise what these people were thinking. The plain lines of Gregorian Chant have been replaced with a three harmony glory which darts about the aisles and chapels of Reims Cathedral, slowing and speeding, lowering and soaring and totally gripping with its harmonic complexities. If there is a summation of the glories of the late 14th century it would be Aquinas' Realism, synthesised by Scotus and finally brought through to the nominalism of William of Ockham, the writings of Dante, Petrarch, Boccacio and Chaucer and this wonderful music. This is not simple rustic music of the home spun English at Crecy. This is the musical depiction of French civilization at its zenith, with its famous manuscripts like the Bible of Jean de Papelou it the Hours of Jeanne D'Evreux. The Romanesque style with its lapis lazuli blues and its idealising of courtly love in scenes that show this earth and the next are the nearest we have to visualisation of this absolute music. I see Decorated Gothic Stain Glass Windows and the most intricate Flying Buttresses which are a silent witness to this music which tantalisingly stands in the changing of worlds. The Black Death was only twelve years away and the old order would be challenged in ten more by uprisings in France and the Peasants' Revolt in England in 1381. The ancien regime would hold on to power but the rediscovery of the ideas of Greece and Rome would change the West's ideas about itself for ever. The New World would crystalize all this but that is in the future. This CD portrays this mediaeval world which fascinates us today with its peculiar mixture of beauty and barbarism. Great value and brilliant at any price with 77 minutes of beatifully written and performed music.
As Machaut heard it in the Reims Cathedral.......1999-11-02
"La Messe de Notre Dame" by Guillaume de Machaut is one of the earliest settings of the Mass by a single composer. The Oxford Camerata,in the Reims cathedral,so the would match the same accoustics as those that must of been heard when the work was first premiered in 1364. the rest of the songs are from "Le voir dit" The liner notes of this recording tell how it was possible to match with great fidelity the accoustics of the Reims Cathedral. This is one of my favorites recordings in my private collection. Questions and comments are greatly appreciated.

Album Description
This album is the work of a Gangster: not just any gangster mind you, but an unliving, unstoppable, undying power that keeps the very center of his time piece ticking. As seconds, minutes, hours, and days fly by, time remains still for Blaze. A victim of gang violent, turned rotted corpse with his mind on avenging his own death through total annihilation of those who had a hand in robbing him of his once mortal life. His rage and anger echoes from the speakers like a blast of a sawed-off shotgun at close range leaving all who hear it riddled with shell shock. Physicians and scientists alike are baffled at the very idea of this walking, animated dead man, and although there is no information to back it up, officials believe that the center of his re-animation is brough about by the blood-soaked and bullet-vented clock he was buried with. His recordings have also been somewhat of a mystery as well, drying up in record stores across the nation, and becoming completely out of print unitl now with the release of this essential collection of Blaze's early years in musical madness. Join the Dead Man himself as we turn back the hands of the clock and take a closer look through time at how the legacy of this immortal G all began.
Customer Reviews:
Blaze.......2007-02-25
There's no possible way I could ever give this album any less than 5 stars. "1 Less G In Da Hood" was practically the soundtrack to my senior year of high school. I remember seeing Blaze live at the "Hatchet Rising Tour." All of these memories are amongst some of the greatest I've ever had. Now onto the music! The album begins with the same intro to Blaze's first EP and contains every song off of the EP minus "S*** Talkers." I used to have that EP so I knew most of the jams anyways. Blaze's voice in unmatchable. If you're into gangsta rap, this is some of the finest you can find. Now onto "1 Less G...." The original version had Jumpsteady as a preacher talking about how great it was that Blaze has died, yada-yada-yada, that's not on here. Instead it kicks straight into "Grave Aint No Place." I was glad to hear that ABK's verse was still here. I know there have been some problems with ABK and Psychopathic, so it's good to hear that they didn't delete them or anything. The only songs missing from "1 Less G..." on this version are the intro, "Str8 Outta Detriot" (an ode to NWA's "Straight Outta Compton"), and "Hatchet Execution". Why they didn't include those tracks is beyond me. I really wish they would have considering the fact that the original version of this album is so hard to find and mine is all scratched up. Next you get 3 new tracks, which are all great. All in all, this is a great release if you no longer own Blaze's first two cds or if you're like me and were unable to take care of the originals. I just wish they wouldn't have taken out any tracks. Highly recommended!
Juggalos--BUY THIS........2007-01-25
Okay, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, also known as Colton Grundy, The Undying. Blaze jumped on Psychopathic as a friend of Twiztid, bringing with him longtime homie ABK as well. From the beginning, most juggalos were at a loss as how much we liked Blaze. There were about 50% that hated him, and another 50% that thought he was fresh. The main thing about Blaze is that his style is not really horrorcore rap in any traditional sense--more like old-school Gangsta rap with a horrorcore twist (the twist being that he presents himself as a man gunned down in a gang shooting 11 years prior, and is now back to his old evil ways, but as an undead, immortal).
If you ask me, that's pretty damn original. That, and the fact that this guy can flow like the river runs, is enough to make me a Blaze juggalo.
But one thing you have to know is that pretty much every song on the album has either the same, or similar, lyrics. But that is THE POINT. Understand that, or you won't like Blaze.
This album is the original Blaze debut EP and his first LP combined, with some of the more pointless tracks removed, and three very fresh new ones added. There are too many tracks on this album to review every one, but the highlights are "Real G S***", "I Go To Work", "Grave Ain't No Place", "Casket", "Juggalo Anthem (AWESOME track)", "Nasty (Hilarious, and very disgusting)", "Hood Rats", "Maggot Face", "Momma I Ain't Changed", and "Garbage". Any juggalo that passed on buying the original EP and LP while they were still in print should pick this up.
Rereleased From the Casket.......2006-07-01
Blaze Ya Dead Homie is dead. If you ain't figured that out, he's a thug who was gunned down 11 years back and now has been resurrected to run with the Hatchet.
For y'all who can't stand that type of creativity, then just do what the title of Shaggy 2 Dope's LP says. For y'all juggalos who can feel this, it's a classic. Basically the original 1 Less G in the Hood, along with the self titled EP, are like impossible to find. They're sold on EBay for like 100 bucks a pop.
So it was only right that Blaze rerelease them as one album. The early Blaze classics are all here (except for a couple). "Casket", "Nasty", "Grave Ain't No Place", and "Juggalo Anthem" are all on here along with other cuts and 3 new songs.
The three new ones are "Look Out"(featuring Lavel), "Mama I Ain't Changed", and "Garbage". The last one is far from its title and is actually pretty fresh. "Look Out" was featured in the video game 25 TO LIFE and "Mama I Ain't Changed" is about Blaze's relationship with his moms. The only thing I wished they could have done different on this album is put Blaze's version of "Dead Body Man" on here. I ain't seen it on any CD's yet and it'd be fresh if it could be.
Other then that though, this was another fresh release from Psychopathic Records and everyone's favorite dead homie, Blaze.
