Arguably the last truly great album from the Byrds, this was a double vinyl set when it appeared in 1970. The 16-minute "Eight Miles High" took up an entire side--allowing for plenty of the free-flowing guitar, bass, and drum solos that were in vogue at the time. The live portion of the program opens with a gritty "Lover of the Bayou" and an inspired take on Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street." The studio set centers around the group's biggest latter-day hit, "Chestnut Mare," as well as Roger McGuinn's haunting "Just a Season." Here, Untitled is supplemented by Unissued, a whole bonus disc of rare and unreleased material. There are storming concert versions of Dylan's "You Ain't Going Nowhere," "My Back Pages," and "This Wheel's on Fire." Studio highlights include "Lover of the Bayou" and an undubbed "Kathleen's Song." Great Byrds Period.......2007-02-19

This was the period when I saw the Byrds most often. The concert material sounds great, and I do wish Clarence White got the props he still deserves. The studio material was the great bonus here. Who would have thought that so much great material was left unreleased for so long. Simply the Byrds at a great period in their history.

Roger McGuinn's SMILE..........2006-03-19

Along with Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson,Roger McGuinn comprises the third in the trinity/pantheon of American pop music masters. Like Brian Wilson's current peerless,touring band THE WONDERMINTS,The McGuinn/Clarence White formation of The Byrds was this superb American band's best touring troop.UNTITLED...originally to be named PHOENIX by Byrdmaster McGuinn...was an excellent album when released in 1970. Songs such as CHESTNUT MARE and JUST A SEASON became classics in their own right along with Tambourine Man;So You Want to Be A Rock'N'Roll Star; and Eight Miles High(reprised here "live" with a blazing 16 minute Coltrane-strain virtuoso performance of the latter).The rest of Untitled was complemented by socko concert versions of LOVER of the BAYOU and Dylan's acid rebuke of pseudo-hippies-NOW-boomer yuppies,POSITIVELY 4TH STREET.

What makes this offering Roger McGuinn's SMILE is the entirely UNISSUED second CD which is comprise of alternate"live"takes on latter-day Byrd classics(Ballad of Easy Rider; You ain't goin' Nowhere;This Wheels on Fire)making it a stellar musical leaf of MY BACK PAGES. Roger McGuinn continues touring and producing Rickenbacker-riffed LEGACY music, but this package of reincarnated Byrds is best of their studio/concert flights and unique summary of what was Sometimes(next to Wilson's Beach Boys)America's best pop music band(8 Miles High Stars).

My Favorite Byrds albulm.......2005-12-01

First of all, I have all of the Byrds albulms and this is my favorite. The live albulm is decent but nothing too spectacular apart from "Lover of the Bayou" and "Positively 4th Street". The studio part is the real deal. Here we have my favorite Byrd's lineup with Clarence White on guitar and some lovely original Roger McGuinn compositions that were missing on the previous 2 albulms. This reissue is now doubled in length with extensive alternate takes and extra live tracks as if the original LP wasn't enough. Most casual listeners know the Byrds from the mid 60s lineup with David Crosby but to me this is the Byrd's albulm to get. If you are not familiar with this lineup (and you wouldn't be if you listen to contemporary FM radio), prepare yourself for a more mellow sounding Byrds with Country influences blended with McGuinn's twelve string guitar and harmonies a little more ragged then what you hear on "Turn, Turn, Turn". To me this takes "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" Byrds and combines it with "Notorious Byrd Brothers" Byrds but gives you the best of both. If you like this albulm check out "Ballad of the Easy Rider" as well. Essential.

oodles of kudos.......2005-11-20

As I have already written a full review of the first disc in this two CD set (the first disc encompassing the original double vinyl album released as 'Untitled' in 1970), this review will primarily be devoted to the 14 track second disc, titled 'Unissued', consisting entirely of previously unreleased studio and live tracks. It should be stated however, since I have lived a period of time with both recordings, that the remastered version of 'Untitled' stands in bold contrast to the original CD version. There are moments where the superior fidelity of the remastering becomes clear, such as in the opening bars of 'Nashville West', which on the original CD sounded as though a mixing problem had completely skewed and lost most everything save the bass and drums. A similar observation can be made in comparing Clarence White's innovative guitar lines on 'Mr. Tambourine Man', which sounded muddled on the original CD, but sound fully integrated into the mix on the remaster.

As if these improvements were not reason enough to invest in the remastered version, a full complement of studio and live recordings have been added to the package on a bonus disc. This second disc reverses the sequence of 'Untitled', first offering alternate and unreleased studio tracks, and then a series of live recordings drawn from the same concerts that provided the live tracks for 'Untitled'. While 'Untitled' failed to reveal the source of these live recordings, thanks to the extensive liner notes offered in 'Unissued' we now know they were made in early 1970 at the Felt Forum in New York, and at the Fillmore East.

The second disc opens with four alternate versions of three songs found on 'Untitled', and they are worthy of inclusion. 'All the Things' and 'Yesterday's Train' are also found on 'Untitled', but I actually find the alternate takes to be superior, sounding more genuine and accessible. 'Lover of the Bayou' appears on 'Untitled' as a live track, so the studio version, with it's echo-chambered vocal and harmonica is a completely different experience. The final alternate is a version of 'Kathleen's Song', a worthy ballad that made its first debut on 'Byrdmaniax', released as the follow-up to 'Untitled' in 1971. Two previously unreleased recordings follow, an energized instrumental titled 'White's Lightning Pt. 2', and a faithful and sincere version of George Lowell's 'Willin', which along with the two opening live tracks form the sequence most devoted to The Byrds version of country music.

To my ear the real treats are yet to come in the form of the live tracks, which open with a version of the finest number from 1968's 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' disc, 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere', followed by 'Old Blue' from 1969's 'Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde', and completing the country segment of the show. The final segment, consisting of more pop and rock oriented fare, leads off with a cover of Bob Dylan's 'It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding') from 1965's 'Bringing It All Back Home', although a Roger McGuinn studio version also appears on the 1969 soundtrack of the 'Ballad of Easy Rider' flick. 'Ballad of Easy Rider' follows, also from the flick, and from The Byrds 1969 disc entitled 'Easy Rider'. The opening bars to this memorable song are deservedly well-received by the audience.

The remaining tracks are collected from diverse sources. 'My Back Pages' is of course a throwback to the original Byrds last studio album, 'Younger Than Yesterday', from 1967. Many believe this to be one of their finest recordings, and the live version here certainly does it justice. A live version of 'Take a Whiff' is next, the original appearing on 'Untitled'. McGuinn himself once stated that there were a few too many whiffs in the song for himself, so offering two versions of the same track in this package probably overdoes it. The last two recordings are gems, however. 'Jesus Is Just Alright' appeared first on 1969's 'Easy Rider', and although the song was immortalized by The Doobie Brothers, The Byrds take on it is thoroughly enjoyable as well. The closing track, 'This Wheel's On Fire', was offered by The Byrds as a studio track on 'Dr. Byrds...', and this fleet version provides a crescendo, and lends an exclamation point to the live set. As if all of this were not enough, there is a 'hidden track' offered on disc two, a brief and vibrant a capella version of 'Amazing Grace'.

This double-disc set serves as the textbook on how to expand and repackage decades old material. 'Untitled' was a fine double disc in its first manifestation, but the inclusion of additional live and studio tracks, as well as detailed liner notes, really gives the work a sense of completeness, even if more material may lie in the vault. The only noticable way this could have been expanded further would have been through inclusion of printed lyrics, but given the number of tracks offered here, that may have proved too cumbersome. Columbia is to be commended for it's efforts, and rewarded by fans of The Byrds through their purchase of this outstanding production.

Not a fan of this one.......2005-06-29

After the great "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", The Byrds tumbled downhill with a series of mediocre albums. While this isn't the worst I'm sure, it's such a far cry from classic Byrds. It is, quite frankly, overblown and boring. The group was always adventurous and experimental, but seriously - did we need a sixteen minute version of "Eight Miles High". They just aimed for too much on this one. The only good song contained here is "Chestnut Mare", and even that is below par when compared to "5D" or "My Back Pages". It is hard to critique this without those comparisions, but even when those are ignored, it's simply a below-par rock album. Still, I'd rather listen to this than The Eagles anyday. The latter-day Byrds isn't really worth your money.

An academic exercise well worth studying.......2006-03-12

Upon first listen, you might think that "Codex Faenza: Instrumental Music of the Early 15th Century" is wrongly named. These works were composed by 14th Century composers, such as Machaut and Landini, and several songs appear as vocal arrangements without instrumentation.

That's where the "Codex Faenza" comes in. This tome was an early 15th century book of instrumental arrangements of 14th century music. The Unicorn Ensemble performs several works from the Codex Faenza, sometimes preceding the instrumental version with the original vocal arrangement for comparison. The last two tracks, the anonymous compositions "Kyrie" and "Ave maris stella," feature alternating sections of plainchant and organ music.

In many cases, the busy melodies gain something in the translation. The top lines have an improvisatory quality that can seem odd when sung, but sound more natural when played instrumentally. The Unicorn Ensemble has mastered late medieval/early Renaissance instrumentation, and their performances effectively evoke the spirit of past times.

I was somewhat critical of The Unicorn Ensemble's version of Dufay's "Chansons" for making Guillaume Dufay's music sound more conservative than it really was. Here, the group does the opposite: they update the sound of Ars Nova composers and demonstrate how their achievements foreshadowed the continued musical advances of the early Renaissance. It's an academic exercise in many ways, but one well worth studying.

Amazing stuff!.......2005-06-04

Wow, what a stunning CD. Firstly I am just floored by the audiophile quality of the recorded sound - much, much better than a lot of CDs for three times the price. This is a characteristic of all of the Ensemble Unicorn recordings but this one is particularly good. As for the performances, they brim with life and color as interpretations of music of this period rarely do. They really bring this music to life, transporting the listener back centuries. The music represented here also has a good deal of depth to recommend it too.

This is just the sort of CD that reinforces the view that Naxos is above all a serious record label of high quality. This would be worth buying even if it cost three times the price.

Essential to any early music collection.......2003-09-04

When I purchased this album, I was expecting it to be more akin to the other music performed by the Ensemble Unicorn. I was expecting quick and lively, music akin to the Spanish Troubadour tunes and Las Cantigas de Santa Maria. I was wrong, and I was disappointed at first. I quickly changed my mind after giving the entire album a listen, and was enchanted.

If you like the quick, lively medieval tunes, then this album may not be your cup of tea. However, I don't think any early music collection is complete without this, and I found that even slower medieval tunes have their virtues, particularly when performed by the always impressive Ensemble Unicorn. Another great album, same incredibly low price as always from the Naxos label, and the same top-notch skill I've come to expect from the Ensemble Unicorn.

Unicorn is simply amazing. They turn out CD after CD, all at budget prices, all far surpassing most other early music efforts. Codex Faenza's pieces are mostly two-part, with a florid upper melody supported by a slower-moving tenor. This allows full display of Unicorn's virtuosity -- unlike their Dufay release, which cramped their style with its elaborate polyphony. The opening improvisations are magical, the subtle treatments of text and context fascinating -- and track 10 is the craziest vielle piece I've ever heard

A Great Outro.......2002-10-03

The song Untitled was a great moment for The Smashing Pumpkins to go out on. The riffs and whole song struture in general is very similar to the glory days of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. It's a shame to see the Pumpkins disband after a killer single like this which proves they are still able to rock after the disappoints of Adore and Machina: The Machines Of God.
The other two tracks on this single shows just how diverse the pumpkins were as a band and these versions definatly stand above the originals. Whilst they do still lack some of that trademark Pumpkins sound
Overall, A Good-bye but I would suggest picking up Rotten Apples: The Best Of The Smashing Pumpkins first if you haven't all ready got it. This single is really just for collecters.

The Final Farewell.......2002-08-06

I love this song. I've heard it on the greatest hits album its a defite must have. It's the bands final farewell to all the fans out there. The Alt version of try try try is very good also. I have yet to listen to the early version of age of innocence but if its as good as the final version then this definately worth the buy.

Obscure b-sides!.......2002-06-09

While I am not a fan of the Pumpkins "Untitled", there previous single "Try,try,try" is exceptionally redone here. The original was great, and this is almost as good. It sounds acoustic, kinda, with sounds incorporated into the recording. This one also has different lyrics. The building rock closer from Machina, "The Age of Innosence" is done well with interesting ambient souns, making it sound as if it was recorded live without studio help. I guess most Pumpkins fans would rather die than not support their leader, Corgan, as would I. If nothing else, buy this for the novelty and cool pictures of the band in the studio.

Historicismo y musicalidad.......2006-07-21

Dentro de la aún acotada discografía que existe sobre música colonial, los trabajos sobre este repertorio que provienen del norte de Europa son los mejor interpretados, más creativos y de mejor calidad. Este disco no es una excepción. A diferencia de la mayoría de los trabajos realizados desde Latinoamérica que tienden a reunir música de toda América del Sur o, en todo caso, por países (hay que tener en cuenta que la actual división política nada tiene que ver con la administración colonial), el criterio bajo el cual se seleccionó el repertorio responde a una motivación real: música que se encontró y pudo ser interpretada en las Misiones Chiquitanas y Moxos en Bolivia.
Es el resultado de un riguroso trabajo cooperativo entre un musicólogo, Piotr Nawrot, y un conjunto de gran trayectoria profesional, Florilegium Musicum, al cual se añadieron cuatro cantantes provenientes de Bolivia con la intención de aportar cierto "nativismo" a la interpretación. De todos modos, éste rasgo (el nativismo) no llega a vislumbrarse en la interpretación ya que la misma no logra alejarse mucho de una visión europeísta del repertorio.
Las obras presentadas en el disco representan una verdadera novedad, ya que en su mayoría fueron grabadas por primera vez en este proyecto.
Una de las cosas más interesantes es el "plus" o premio final que es el reslutado de una improvisación realizada en los ensayos con sikus, guitarra y bajo.
Se agradece especialmente la incorporación de un DVD en el que se exponen detalles del montaje discográfico y de la investigación que se llevó a cabo para su realización.

Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Scottish fantasies at their best .......2006-11-15

This double CD is a real treasure, and a showcase of both the musicianship and scholarship. Rachel Barton Pine has researched both the composers and the history of the performances of the works she has recorded. She has produced the most attractive booklet which goes with the CDs, in which she teaches the subject in an effective, friendly and captivating way. Particularly interesting is her documentation of Sarasate's familiarity with Scottish fiddling. Rachel Barton Pine has also a very attractive and informative web site on which one can find information about this project. Just "Google" her and her site comes right up. I think that her web site is great. One can find the schedule of her concerts and all sorts of interesting educational things. I only wish that all great performers would do the same.
Rachel Barton Pine is a virtuoso, but her musicianship shines and it makes her virtuosity just a tool. She is so much more than the flying fingers. In a winning combination with Maestro Alexander Platt, an immensely talented conductor, they have produced a classic which will be listened to for years to come. There may never be a comparable Scottish Fantasy and Pibroch Suite performance. Mr. Platt leaves no note unexpressed. As opposed to the lesser conductors, who sometimes overpower the soloist, or who seek their own limelight at the expense of the soloist, Mr. Platt achieves a perfect union of the soloist and the orchestra, just as it should be. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is also at its best.
These records' main value is in the interpretation, which is insightful and elegant. There are no over-interpretations, however, in which the soloist or orchestra would push their own detailed view of this music. Instead, certain dreaminess is allowed, and the listeners can build their own Scottish Fantasies and become active participants in this music.
Sarasate's Airs écossaise is a totally charming piece. The Medley of Scots Tunes, by Rachel Barton Pine and Alasdair Fraser, a master Scottish fiddler, is an event. I admit to listening to it consecutively eight times, and would have listened to it more times, but was afraid of a total addiction.
The great art of fiddling, the artists' dreams about their countries of origin, pictures of beautiful Scotland, and the musical finesse and musicianship are all the impressions you will come out with after listening to these great recordings.
This review is dedicated to Dr. Andrew B. Dempster for his birthday. Andrew has shown me his native country, Scotland, and guided me through its history. I came back with wonderful memories, and a book of music sheets on Scottish fiddling, my most precious music sheets ever.

really, really good.......2005-06-30

A very pleasant, often lively, evocative and enjoyable set of CDs. The video documentary included in the second CD tells about how Barton Pine studied Celtic/Scottish music before making her recording, and the extra work shows in her ability to render the Bruch as a far lovelier recording than any other violinst has. She finds the tensions, the delicacies and the warmth of this piece. Add to that, the Sarasate is also beautifully done -- sorry it was so short a piece. On the second CD, the Mackenzie and the McEwen, not heard that often, are also really well done. This isn't fiddling -- you get true classical versions of the folk tunes hidden in these selections. Because of that, Barton Pine brings out nuances that were never before explored, and she does it by showing you just how good, how rich, this music can be. The final piece, Barton Pine's arrangement of scottish tunes, is also enjoyable --a fun way to end an album that is both relaxing and delightful. Highly recommended.

Amazing grace & style.......2006-03-16

This is not your typical ear candy that you listen to once, love immediately and adore completely and then discard. It's a well thought out, sophisticated, carefully orchestrated and pretty darm impressive.

I wish the man were recording more. For the one cover of "Maybe I'm Amazed" I was surprised and delighted -- it's not exactly an easy song to sell but Billy Porter has a talent for interpretation. He also has a devine voice.

I understand from the linear notes of his 'Broadway and Soul' album that he's taking more control (good for him) and from his arrangement of the closing song 'Sunday' that he did -- he should flex those muscles.

Yes, he deserves five stars, six and seven, but that's for the next cd. I'll even pay full price for a cd by Billy Porter!

Worth every dollar.......2005-03-29

I just saw Billy's solo show in NYC and it confirmed my admiration for this fine artist. His range and power of voice are truly wonderful. There was no studio tricks on the album to make him sound good. He is all natural. Pay whatever price you have to and get this CD.

When I heard "Love is on the way" I thought for sure this was a number one hit, and while the charts didn't do it justice, the cd is wonderful. Billy is one hellva a great singer.

Disappointing after reading these reviews..........2004-07-01

After the positive reviews written here, I was expecting this to be a realy good album. I guess Billy Porter has a nice voice, but the entire album has no passion or feeling...it's like he's singing the same song over and over and doesn't know what he is supposed to be singing about. The album is produced fairly well, but the instrumentals are basic and lacking anything new or interesting. If you want soft, unobtrusive background music, you might like this CD. I sent it back.

Wow! Is all can say. What a voice, Billy has range and quality of sound. I first heard the CD about two years ago and begged a friend for a copy of this out of print timeless CD, but after a year a so I found my own copy which I hold on too tightly.

Check out the fury of "Lay It Down" or the enthralling alternative rocker "Secret." And for those quieter moments, the Gate gives us the lonely sounding and moving ballad "Hands." Now, I may not be the best guy to judge music, but I've really enjoyed this CD and keep on coming back to it. As a Christian Band, the Gate has deeply engrained their beliefs into their music, in other words, you can tell. Nice rocking sounds most of the time, good vocals, found these guys (and girl) through pandora.com and simply had to have the CD.

The more... the better.......2005-12-10

The more you listen to this music, the more you will like it. As an American that has been to South Africa twice, I find their adventurous and stalwart character represented here yet again in their stand for their faith in Jesus Christ. One can only have admiration and appreciation for this project. May you be once again reminded of the greatness of God and his unlimited compassion in this cd as I have been.

Music: Phenomenal Lyrics:repetitive repetitive repetitive..........2005-04-14

Benjamin Gate were a South African Christian alternative rock band led by female vocalist Adrienne Liesching. ("The actual Benjamin Gate was one of the original gates in the walls of ancient Jerusalem that they used to herd the young sheep through," explains the band's drummer, Brett Palmer. "For us, that directly relates to youth, and our music being a gateway between the church and the world." Now you know where the odd name comes from...) They released 2 albums before breaking up when Liesching wed fellow Christian rocker Jeremy Camp. Along the way, the group traded in gnarly guitar riffs but with plenty of "techno" touches (phased keyboards and filtered vocals) and the powerhouse tender or tough vocals from 19 year old Adrienne. The comparisons to Garbage are probably about the best in terms of sonics, though this group tends to be "heavier" than Garbage usually is.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"All Over Me", the big radio hit, is undoubtedly the finest tune here. The charging "Blow my Mind" is an all-out assault on the senses coupling a throbbing club drumbeat with a thick instrumental track full of production tricks. It's probably the most "techno" song here. "Lay it Down" overcomes its weak chorus (say "lay it down" again and again and again...) with sheer shredding guitar power and vocal fury. "Hands" is a beautiful but menacing piano ballad that resembles Evananescence's huge hit "My Immortal" (though it predates it by 2 years). It proves Liesching has the voice for ballads.

LOWS:
Biggest criticism overall is boring choruses lyrically. As another reviewer pointed out, they're often nothing more than the song's title ad infinitum and as a result sap the power away from a lot of the songs. "Rush" probably is the worst offender where the chorus is "Your grace/Your grace/Your grace/Your grace/Oh Jesus/Oh Jesus". (No, really, that's it..) The tragic part is the song has a VERY cool Psalm 1 rap but it's hard to take it fully seriously in the midst of the rest of the lyric.

BOTTOM LINE:
After 4 years of distance, this album doesn't sound as good to me as I once thought. The music's still phenomenal but it's harder not to snicker at the lyrics on some of the tracks. Worth having for the best tracks but not one that will be a favourite of mine in 10 years or so.

POSTSCRIPT:
There's a hidden track (sort of) called "(Did you Know that) I Love You?" It's track 77 on the CD.

The best Christian release of its year.......2005-03-05

I find it so sad that the Benjamin Gate did not become huge stars. Granted, their singer married Jeremy Camp and then broke up the band, but before then, they were still not at the level of success they deserved.

Out of thousands of Christian releases that year (2001?), the Benjamin Gate's "Untitled" stood out head and shoulders. Their songs are melodic, futuristic, worshipful, thrilling, grooving, powerful, and just plain GREAT rock and roll.

They remind me of Missing Persons circa 1983. They are techno-sounding but without the use of keyboards. Their guitarists are genius. There are so many sonic elements to chew on and their rhythm section never fails to make me want to drive fast!

I have never met anyone who was disappointed with this CD. Live, they were tremendous, which is sad that they no longer exist. If you are interested in Christian music that goes beyond the three-chord pop format, this is an excellent listen. I cannot rate them highly enough.
