Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.Customer Reviews:

Van Morrison reputedly wasn't crazy about the idea of a greatest-hits package, and this set's haphazard programming--which leaps from period to period, style to style, tossing in two key singles by his mid-'60s band Them--speaks to his lack of involvement. Still, it rivals Moondance as Morrison's most popular album, and for a reason: like that classic, it offers one deeply soulful, spiritually and musically thoughtful track after another. Much of his more "difficult" work is ignored here; in fact, Best of... gives us an intriguing picture of a Van who's almost eager to please. --Rickey WrightAlbum Description
Import pressing of this ace collection now deleted in the US! Van Morrison has boldly followed his own musical path since the '60s and this compilation proves that he has the talent to match his own vision. From the early days with Them ('Gloria') through his critically successful solo career ('Moondance', 'Brown Eyed Girl', 'Have I Told You Lately'), he remains one of the most beloved and influential artists in modern music, 20 tracks total, also including 'Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)', 'Domino', 'Here Comes The Night' and more. I like them as much as Philosopher's Stone, In the Midnight, Precious Time, Back on Top, When the Leaves Come Falling Down.....Rain check, These Dreams of You, Golden Autumn Day, Reminds Me of You, High Summer....opps there is my favorites list.
I'd recommend listening to Van. He's a poet. He's able to say what I'm thinking. And I'm going to see him one day because I have a ticket to go to an upcoming concert....like his concerts.Glad he comes to LA. So this is just a CD to get me in the mind frame. But even without that I'd listen to these. I guess I can IPOD my favorites now....

Still, it's not perfect. I don't care how popular Have I Told You Lately is, I don't like it. In my mind it's a sap-fest from someone who isn't really sappy. Same with Queen of the Slipstream. Get rid of these two, as well as Dweller on the Threshold and Warm Love. Swap in Madame George and Caravan. Then you'll have the true Best of Van Morrison.

One need hear only the first notes of this collection--the Edge's ringing guitar notes ushering in "Pride (In the Name of Love)"-to be taken back to 1984: Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher rule the Western world, the L.A. Olympics is the top sports story, and Ms. Pac-Man reigns at arcades. In rock & roll, there's U2 growing in stature with each new title. Even doubters of the Irish lads have to concede that together they formed the one '80s band with the skill and sense of scale to take over the airwaves and concert stages in a decade of diminished expectations. This 15-song '80s best-of assortment (stick around for the hidden track) spans the decade, reaching back to 1980's "I Will Follow," when Bono and company were peach-fuzzy and earnest as choirboys, and tracking their path through their most glaring misstep, 1988's overblown Rattle and Hum. --Steven StolderAlbum Description
Stunningly brilliant is the only way to describe the new Wired Remorse album appropriately titled "The Ides of March." The album whose theme of backstabbing and revenge comes thru as loud and aggressive as anything since Siouxsie and the Banshees "JU JU" or Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures." While the tribal drum beats will remind one of Dead Can Dance, Killing Joke or even Bow Wow Wow. The minor guitar barrage and whaling singing should force you anticipate the best "old school" album in years!Customer Reviews:

The tracks on The Best of the Chieftains are drawn from The Chieftains 7, The Chieftains 8, and Boil the Breakfast Early--three of the band's recordings from the late 1970s. This was the period when former Bothy Band and Planxty flautist Matt Molloy and vocalist/bodhran player Kevin Cunniffe joined up and finally fulfilled Paddy Maloney's vision of what the band should sound like. It also marks the last time the Chieftains recorded pure, unadulterated traditional Irish music. Not long after making these albums, the band set off on a new career that has included numerous movie and TV soundtracks, collaborations with pop stars of various stripes, and guest appearances with symphony orchestras. Although some purists decry the band's later attempts at crossover, the near perfection of tracks such as the exquisitely performed suite of dance tunes "Chase Around the Windmill" show that the Chieftains had taken the old tunes about as far as they could go. The group may have gone on to make better-selling records, but they never topped the traditional grace and charm of the songs on The Best of the Chieftains. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:

The best of the early Chieftains.......2003-11-27
There are some really incredible tracks here, like "O'Sullivan's March", an old 18th-century military tune arranged for the entire band -- the flutes in the middle section preserve the wonderful old fife-like quality of the original song. "Sea Image" and "Speic Seoigheach", composed by Paddy Moloney himself, point toward the group's later development as a band blending a traditional feel into their own original compositions. And the rest of the tracks show exactly why these marvelous Irishmen were nominated for a Grammy over twenty years ago.
Five stars easily!

THE ORANGE AND THE GREEN provides an amusing look at the difficulties involved in being the mixed offspring of Catholic Irish and Protestant Scottish-Irish parents ("being strictly neutral, I bashed everyone in sight!")while LILY THE PINK is an amusing story about the efficacy of a woman's medicinal compounds which were some less than expected: "Ebenezer thought he was Julius Caesar so they put him in a home and gave him medicinal compound, now he's Emperor of Rome!" They also cured an indivdual with a "terrible stammer" after which "he's s-s-seen but n-n-never heard."
And of course there is the slightly more subtle humor regarding Ms. Crandall's boarding house. One should just listen and enjoy.
Grab it with a copy of your favorite Gaelic Storm cd and laugh all your problems away.

FORGET U2... THIS IS THE BEST BAND TO EVER COME OUT OF IRELAND.......2007-05-05
DEDICATION IS THE TRUE AND TRAGIC STORY IN THE LIFE AND TALES OF THIN LIZZY.........2007-03-04
THIN LIZZY, like THE YARDBIRDS AND FLEETWWOD MAC, will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history for having some of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. THIN LIZZY would also be one of the early pioneers to hail from their proud Irish roots where it was originally founded in 1969 in Dublin, Ireland. There has been many acts that have been born out of Ireland and have taken the world by storm. Two of these acts are the still extremely famous VAN MORRISON (Originally from the band THEM) and U2, who are still extremely popular to this very day. THIN LIZZY proved to the whole world that an Irish band could play Rock n' Roll and kick a*s just like the British and the Americans. THIN LIZZY would release some great albums through the years from 1973 to 1980 and would Rock on their terms with their own special blend of magical Rock n' Roll music. THIN LIZZY would include two original members that were the two mainstays and lifeforces of the THIN LIZZY legend. They were the late great Phil Lynott on bass and lead vocals and Brian Downey on drums. Legendary guitarists that have played in THIN LIZZY through the years have included Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore and Snowy White. The album "DEDICATION" is the tragic story of THIN LIZZY which includes some of their greatest songs that the band ever recorded. In my opinion, "DEDICATION" is one hell of an album that is a true testament of the greatness and creativity of Lynott and Downey and a fine tribute to a great legendary Irish band that was truly ahead of its time. When you listen to their music, you will quickly realize that this band definitely knew how to Rock. But you will also hear a different side of THIN LIZZY, this band truly knew how to play slow beautiful romantic music that was extremely powerful and emotional that you cannot help but feel entranced by the power of their music. This album is the life and times of THIN LIZZY, their music is their story.
Now its time to let the music do all of the talking. If you want to get down and Rock the THIN LIZZY way, listen to the Rockers such as the brilliant mellow Rocker "Whiskey In The Jar," the a*s kicking Rocker "The Rocker," the beautiful hypnotic Rocker "She Knows," the forever beautiful and romantic "Still In Love With You," the soulful heartfelt "Showdown," the charismatic Rocker "Rosalie," the acoustic Rocker "Wild One," the mellow noise making Rocker "Fighting My Way Back," another Rocker that kicks a*s is the well known "Jailbreak," the forever trademark THIN LIZZY Rocker that kicks a*s "The Boys Are Back In Town," the slow beautiful turned Country Rocker "Cowboy Song," the guitar talking Rocker "Don't Believe A Word," the a*s kicking Rocker "Bad Reputation," the soulful raggae like "Dancin' In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In Its Spotlight)," the breathtaking Rocker "Do Anything You Want To," the blistering Rocker "Waiting For An Alibi," the groundbreaking Rocker "Chinatown" and the remixed Lynott Rocker that kicks a*s "Dedication." Lynott's blistering lead vocals is the ultimate Rock voice which bares so much pain and emotion that he gives the music additional power and meaning. All of the guitarists contribute perfectly on this album and you can actually feel the differences and styles that each guitarist brought to the band.
Overall, "DEDICATION" is one hell of a compilation album that is worth seeking and checking out especially for the new and curious fans.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, it is just to bad that THIN LIZZY retired from the Rock n' Roll world so soon while still in their prime, I truly believe that THIN LIZZY still had so much to give to Rock n' Roll. When Phil Lynott died in 1986, all hopes of reuniting THIN LIZZY and creating more Rock n' Roll for the world to hear were dashed and crushed forever. I truly believe with all my heart that had Lynott lived, THIN LIZZY would still be rocking today better than ever. Perhaps, in a way, the album "DEDICATION" is Mercury Records' way of saying that THIN LIZZY is still alive and kicking and their legend and legacy still lives on. So here's to you late great Phil, Brian, Eric, Scott, Brian R., Gary and Snowy. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THIN LIZZY FOREVER. R.I.P PHILIP PARRIS LYNOTT, Born 20 August 1949, Died 4 January 1986 at age 36. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

All the Thin Lizzy you'll ever need .......2006-10-19
In addition, with Deep Purple (and their long history), you'll need a lot more than just a "Very Best Of" collection. I didn't quite find that the case with Thin Lizzy. Still, it all comes down to a matter of taste.
Rock on!
A good Thin Lizzy compilation... though far from complete.......2006-10-13
THE DISC: (1991) 18 tracks clocking in at approximately 77 minutes. Included with the disc is a 6-page booklet containing song times/credits (no lyrics), song titles and year released, band photos and listing of members, and a 1-page intro from Neil Jeffries (Kerrang! magazine). 17 of the 18 songs are from the years 1973-1980. The last song was released posthumously for this disc (track 18 - "Dedication"). All songs written by Thin Lizzy members (mainly Lynott) with the exception of "Rosalie" (by Bob Seger). Label - Mercury.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Vagabonds Of The Western World (2 songs), Nightlife (3), Fighting (3), Jailbreak (3), Johnny The Fox (1), Bad Reputation (2), Black Rose (2), Chinatown (1), unreleased (1).
COMMENTS: "Dedication" is a very good mix of Thin Lizzy songs. In hindsight though, I think it's geared more toward the casual fan. It's not as 'definitive' as it could have been (omitting several Lynott era albums) and 2 discs were probably necessary. THE GOOD: Phil Lynott was a great song writer... full of passionate lyrics and vocals. Lynott was also an underrated bassist. Thin Lizzy was first and foremost a great guitar band - rhythm and solos were highlights on every album. For the most part - all the hits are here (standards include "The Boys Are Back In Town", "Whiskey In A Jar", "Jailbreak", "Cowboy Song", "Bad Reputation", "Dancin' In The Moonlight", "The Rocker", etc), as well as several deservng deep album tracks ("Showdown", "Wild One", "Don't Believe A Word", "Chinatown", "Waiting For An Alibi", etc). The unreleased "Dedication" is a great rocker of a tune - the disc is worthy of the purchase to long time fans on the stength of this one song alone. THE NOT SO GOOD: Several albums had no representation. No songs from their 1971 self titled debut, no songs from "Shades Of A Blue Orphanage" (1972), "Renegade" (1981), "Thunder And Lightning" (1983), or any other post-Lynott albums featuring guitar wizard John Sykes (Whitesnake, Blue Murder, Tygers Of Pan Tang). No live tracks (even one song from "Live & Dangerous" would have been a bonus). Again, I strongly feel a 2nd disc was needed. There are no filler tunes here - all the songs from each of the albums represented here are spot on. "Dedication" is a good Thin Lizzy compilation, though far from complete (4+ stars).

A very decent intro for the price.......2005-03-15
I first bought "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" in cassette years ago to simply learn some pub songs before an Irish vacation. I wasn't looking for classic renditions or sublime technical achievement, just something to teach me the tunes.
For the price, I was very pleasantly surprised. The songs are great, and this assortment is hard to find in one recording. Whether the "pub atmosphere" in the background is contrived or authentic was irrelevant to me; I did feel that it enhanced the listening experience, however, so I think it's a nice touch. If inauthenticity in that kind of thing gets your cockles up, then look to the Clancy Brothers or any other Irish folk legends for "live" concert recordings, or Matt Molloy for an honest-to-gosh pub recording, but you won't find these tunes in one product for any price anywhere else. The only downsides I found with this economic recording were no lyric sheet, and tempos that might vary from "studio" versions of the same songs, but all in all, it's a very enjoyable little tape for a small investment.

People may argue whether or not this 19-track, 65-minute compilation qualifies as the best of Clannad, but few would argue that it showcases the Irish group's striking diversity. No question it includes some of Clannad's best-known selections, including pop-single cameos by Bruce Hornsby ("Something to Believe In") and Bono of U2 ("In a Lifetime"), plus its career-propelling "Theme From Harry's Game." It also touches on the group's beat-heavy forays into pop-rock ("In Search of a Heart," the jam-filled "Second Nature," the Fleetwood Mac-like "Northern Skyline.") The disc's most attractive feature, however, is its sampling of Clannad's varied approach to Celtic styles, performed at times with an ethereal, traditional delicacy ("Newgrange," "Ta Me Mo Shui," the Enya-like "Now Is Here"), and at other times with beguiling hints of contemporary influences (such as the faint country strains floating through "Buachaill on Eirne"). An interesting listen. --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:

I was a big Clannad fan at the end of the 80's, and picked this up for old time's sake. I was already familiar with all the songs here, which I have on cassette.
It contains many of my favourites, but I have nevertheless a few gripes with this release. I feel that it gives a slightly skewed picture, being somewhat narrow in scope with regards to the selection of tracks. Only four albums are represented here, from Clannad's substantial discography, with the emphasis being upon two (which happen to be my personsal favourites), Magical Ring and Macalla. This is a 19-song compilation, but those two albums provide 13 of the songs, which seems a little over the top. Indeed, 60% of Magical Ring, and 70% of Macalla is to be found here, which must surely lessen the incentive in new fans to buy the actual albums, which would be a shame.
The compilers could at least have chosen a track or two from Fuaim, Atlantic Realm, and Anam, without straying far from the concept of showcasing this particular stage in Clannad's history. It would also give more of a notion of where they came from, and in which direction they headed after their decidedly dodgy album, Sirius.
I sometimes find it a better listening experience to re-programme the tracks in chronological order - it makes more sense that way. It seems silly to place Second Nature second, just because of it's name, and rather crude to follow the delicate beauty of Theme From Harry's Game, and The Fairy Queen, with the jolt into joviality that is Journey's End.
So, all in all, I would say that it isn't the best place to start, but of course the content is for the most part great stuff. There are superior Clannad compilations out there, certainly, and their classic albums, Magical Ring, and Macalla, shouldn't be missed.
The best?.......2004-02-23
It's a good collection...but the best? I think not.
