This is the "serious" side of the Irish Rovers, as it were. Of course, serious is a relative term, considering the irresistible cheerfulness found in these 15 lilts. But, where 1999's The Best of the Irish Rovers focused on their best-known novelties (like "The Unicorn") and drinking songs from their 1968-1971 Decca tenure, this 2000 collection spotlights their political, historical, and more traditional Irish songs. Even when the themes are sober--postfamine emigration, social rebellion, unrest, and protest--the Rovers turn them into musical celebrations of perseverance, integrity, and triumph in the face of adversity. Add to these topical songs a mix of lively dance numbers and light-hearted courting songs, and you have a clear look at the "other side" of the Rovers, one thoroughly steeped in their musical and cultural history. --Marc Greilsamer

Rovers show their heritage.......2003-08-29
The Irish Rovers have sung many different types of song, but this collection brings together some of their recordings of traditional Irish music, as well as contemporary material that sounds as if it could have been traditional.
The set begins with an instrumental, King of the faeries, but is followed by a selection of Irish songs that includes wonderful ballads and story songs as well as upbeat, fun songs.
An interesting aspect of this collection is the sequence of four songs about the Irish people that moved to America because of the potato famine - Shamrock shore, Banks of Newfoundland, Shores of America and Lament for the Molly Maguires.
A glance at the track listing will show that this is not a collection of famous Irish songs - you won't find Danny boy here - but those songs can be found elsewhere. For those who want some Irish music beyond the obvious, this is an excellent collection.
Irish at it's Best.......2000-06-03
This album is exciting, spirited and delightful. I loveed it back in the 70's and still do now. The Rovers are a unique group.
A excellent companion piece to 1999's "Best of" release.......2000-03-21
The music of the Irish Rovers is difficult to come by, which is very unfortunate. Last year MCA released the long overdue "Best of..." which contained 16 of the most popular tracks. Now we have this latest collection which pulls together another 15 essential tracks. There are lots of pleasant surprises here for those who are only familiar with the "hits" including the delightful "Bridget Flynn", the marvelous up-beat "Mountain Tay" and "Rovers Fancy", and slightly naughty "Up Among the Heather". This collection comes across as more "traditional" than "Best Of..." and should be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys good Irish music. Again, if you have "Best of..." you owe it to yourself to pick this one up as well.
My only complaint, and you can't hold this against the Rovers themselves, is that MCA is being a bit stingy with the material. There are 15 tracks here, but with many lasting just over 2 minutes the total running time is just over 35 minutes. If MCA really wanted to provide good value they could have utilized the full playing time of the digital format and added almost all these songs to last year's "Best of...". Now THAT would have been a bargain. Or at least added some more numbers like "Goodnight Irene", "Donald Where's Your Trousers", "Farewell to Nova Scotia", "Minstrel of Cranberry Lane", "Wind That Shakes the Corn", and "Coulter's Candy". But maybe they're saving those for next year's release?
Gives the feeling of the Green.......2000-03-16
This is a great CD. Reminds me of the days I lived in Maine as a child and watched the Irish Rovers on wintery Saturday nights. Some of the songs have a Riverdance twist to them, while others have the traditional beat of irish pub music. Another winner from the Rovers!

Customer Reviews:
Points off for poor mastering, packaging.......2003-02-28
Terrific material here from the Clancys and Makem, no question about that. The original two albums this CD has been assembled from are classics of Irish traditional folksong, and in a way, this CD package is the best way to acquire both in digital format at a bargain price. However, the mastering for CD is perfunctory at best and a cheat at worst. The first half, the rebel songs from the original "Irish Songs of Rebellion" (aka Rising for the Moon; be aware of many repackagings of Clancy Bros. material on various labels) is a better job, although the production still sounds thin. But the second half, the drinking songs from "Come Fill Your Glass with Us", is woeful. The playing speed is too fast compared to the original vinyl and these songs have patently been prepared from a vinyl LP, not original master tapes -- you can still hear the pops and clicks and turntable hum. There's no excuse for this.
Many reviewers of other Clancy Bros. albums have complained about shoddy repackagings and haphazard presentation and noted that it's about time Sony/Columbia put some effort into compiling a complete set of Clancy Bros. recordings in proper sound quality. I heartily second this motion. ...
If you buy one Clancy Brothers CD...this is the one!!.......2001-03-14
Ah, Ireland, the land of sad love and happy war. The songs are funny, rousing, sad, uplifting and satirical all at the same time. Many of the songs, such as "Nell Flaherty's drake are camoflaged songs of protest against the British "oppressors." I find my self humming the songs and I'm not even Irish. What's even more unusual is my 17 year old son likes the songs too.
Great rebel music........1999-12-12
The Clancy's are at their best when singing about rebellion. This album will remind you just how much you hate the Brits!

Absolutely beautiful! .......2007-05-15
The first time I heard Daniel O'Donnell was on PBS. I will never forget it because I ususally never stop on that particular channel. But there is something about his voice - and his stage presence - and the songs he was singing that made him unforgettable to me.
This is a magnificent collection of inspirational songs that Daniel O'Donnel has sung so beautifully. "You Raise Me Up", "Surely The Presence of the Lord", "Here I Am Lord", are my mentionable favorites.

This transaction went smoothly and the product was in perfect shape.
I DO WISH I HAD KNOWN THIS WAS JUST A TAPING OF A LIVE PROGRAM. I WAS EXPECTING JUST DANIEL'S MUSIC, NOT TALKING AND CLAPPING BETWEEN PIECES.

The songs of faith is very healing and calming. I would recomend this to everyone. It is also very strengthing.
An Irish ambassador to the world!.......2005-12-11
American audiences probably - and unfortunately - didn't get their intro to Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell until Public Television aired his 2003 concert of this two-disc, 24-song collection. And what a debt we owe PBS. A truly phenomenal singer, O'Donnell has blessed just about every field of music - pop, rock, country, inspirational - with an incredible punch. This collection is an interdenominational collection of inspirational music that O'Donnell treated a packed audience in a live show in his native country. There's little, if anything, that O'Donnell can't do to his selected songs in this jewel of a CD - from standards like "Nearer My God to Thee," "I Saw the Light," "Sweet Queen of Peace" and "Let There Be Peace" to crossover inspirational pop hits like "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Put Your Hand in the Hand" and "One Day at a Time." As an Irish Catholic, O'Donnell unleashes one of the most inspirational versions of "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace" (The Prayer of St. Francis). As if he needed it, O'Donnell has terrific backup from a gifted group of singers and musicians. In particular, Irish singer Mary Duff joins O'Donnell in "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and goes solo in an upbeat rendition of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and which gets the audience stirred up enough to join in. O'Donnell does the Irish proud, and if the United Nations ever needs an Irish ambassador to the world, it ought to check out O'Donnell. For us in the audience, though, O'Donnell gives us the treat of an incredible range of talent and entertainment, and this collection in particular has little - if anything - to criticize. An amazing, wonderful talent!

As a fan of celtic music, I sincerely believe that Heart of the Celts is most astonishing CD I've ever heard. I've often said, that this is the music I'd like to hear as I leave this world!!! I've shared this CD with many friends, who share my love of this CD. Unparralled!
Spellbinding, moving and magical.......1999-12-10
Karen Matheson and Connie Dover's voices are magnificent. If you enjoy Celtic music, this CD is a must. Love songs are even more enchanting when you can't understand the words (some songs are in English, though)! The music really draws you in. I find myself playing it over and over. Came upon it at a 1/2 price book store by accident, what a find!
Narada has done it again!

A beautiful voice and beautiful music that grows on you .......2006-11-10
This is my first Connie Dover purchase and I can't wait to buy all the rest of her CDs. How could this artist's beautiful voice and delivery not be in the mainstream. Thank you again Accuradio/Radiocelt! I love Connie's story telling--her voice is so clear that you can understand every word she sings! The Holland Handkerchief, Shady Grove and Fear An Bhata all impress in different ways. Ned of the Hill is a special song that may not be your favorite at first but gets better and better each time you hear it. La Fontaine is sung in french and is emotional and touching--the harmonics are haunting. Connie's supporting musical cast compliment her vocal presentation perfectly.
This is the kind of music that grows on you and just gets better and better with each listen. Connie, when is your next CD coming out?
breath-taking.......2006-07-04
Connie Dover is one of the best celtic singers I have had the pleasure to listen to. I loved the album. I was soothing as well as uplifting.
Evocative, enthralling.......2005-12-07
Here is a wonderful voice, full of purity and presence, singing 11 traditional Irish, Scottish and American songs on 60 minutes of music. This means the songs are longer than the usual 3-minutes-and-out you find on the radio. But frankly I didn't even notice, they are as long as they need to be (except the sweet traditional country tune "Shady Grove", which could be longer).
Connie Dover has a full, clear, rich voice that lets the song shine through even as she lets her voice shape it as it passes. You could not find a greater contrast to a voice like Eva Cassidy's. With Eva, I am sometimes overwhelmed at the stunning power and personality she weaves into her songs, indeed, many have commented that she makes a song her own. Connie Dover makes a song everyone's.
Her voice alone merits 5 stars. But the high quality of the (sometimes melancholy) material and the solid instrumentation are not just bonuses. This is effortless music with lots of musical effort beind it. The song selection is basically from Irish, Scottish and American folk music, with instruments appropriate to the genre. You'll hear some Gaelic and French in the vocals. And always with that pure clear voice.
If you're looking for something away from the rushing waters of American pop music, give her a try. There is a great deal of talent to be found off the main road, here in the backroads of folk music, at its best. "I took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference." (Robert Frost) Take this road, and see where it takes you.
Love Connie Dover's voice..........2005-07-19
...but haven't gotten into the album yet- in part due to not listening to it enough. I was hoping for a more atmospheric sound as on "Cantus" or "Ubi Caritas" so I think it may take me a while to get used to her more traditional stylings on this album. The country number is neat- a different touch. "Fear an Bhata" is a great opener to the album.
Unsurpassed.......2003-12-30
I still haven't found a Celtic artist I like as much as Connie Dover. Her voice is beautiful, and she never has weak moments. Her diction is perfect, as is her intonation. The instrumental accompaniment always enhances the mood of the song- from piano to fiddle to uillean pipes. Her songs are a nice variety of the older and newer, some with lyrics or melodies she has written herself. The harmonies are beautiful, particularly in La Fontaine. I can't say which of her albums is my favorite, but it might be this one. I listen to all of them frequently.

WHEN THE HARP WAS CRUSHED BENEATH THE CROWN .......2006-04-18
The following review is being used to comment on several of the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem recordings. The obvious musical skills, talent and commitment to craftsmanship of this group during its history need no comment by me. Nor does their commitment to keeping alive the Irish folk tradition. Thus, the criterion for review is whether the works represents the political traditions associated with the historic struggle for independence from the English.
A word. As I developed a quasi- leftist political consciousness in my youth I also, in an unsystematic and for the most part then unconscious manner, developed an interest in what is today is called roots music. Initially this was reflected in my first love-the Blues. During the early sixties, under the influence of Dave Van Ronk at first, then Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the rest I developed an interest in folk music, then at the height of its revival. It is through this process that I came to appreciate the work of the artists under review. This is odd, and I will explain why. I was actually reared on the material presented here by my maternal grandfather, a great supporter of the Irish Republican Army. I gained from him my own romantic attachment to the exploits of the IRA in 1916 and beyond until independence. Although my own political evolution since then has led me away from political support to the IRA I still love the old songs which represent the spirit of Irish national identity and aspirations for national liberation historically suppressed by the bloody English.
A word about the songs presented here. The liner notes included with the CD are helpful here. The songs range in subject from `The Rising of the Moon' at the time of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishman, probably the last time that a united, independent, non-sectarian single Irish state was possible, to `Kevin Barry' and `Sean Treacy' just before the partition in 1921, creating the mess that still confronts us politically today. That said, as these lines are being written we are approaching the 90th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The vision that James Connolly and others of a Social Republic proclaimed at the General Post Office still waits. In short, there is still work to be done, North and South, united or as independent states. Listen to these songs to understand where we have come from and why we still need to fight.
Rebellion and transcendence.......2002-04-20
A timeless album from the boys, and a great collection of songs. When I was growing up (in England), just about every household we ever went to had this album - even a lot of English folk music fans loved the Clancies and Tommy M. You can't be a Folk fan and not love Irish music.
My one regret is that this album lacks a traditional version of Wearin' O The Green (the Wolfe Tones covered it on Profile). Like so many classic Irish rebel songs, Rising Of The Moon was written about the 1798 United Irishmen uprising, and is the same air as WOTG, but lyrically it lacks some of The Green's power. WOTG was about the banning of the shamrock and St. Patrick's Day by the English, and when they sang "They're hanging men and women there, for the wearin' o' the green" they weren't kidding.
This beautifully remastered CD contains a very informative booklet, which gives something of the history of each song, and which singer is featured, as well as details about each of the boys, including Pat's former IRA connections. Street cred, or what?
There are so many standout songs here, including Tipperary Far Away (sometimes known as Sean Tracy) and The Wind That Shakes The Barley, which features the golden voice of Tommy Makem. While Tommy's version is quite simply the best rendition ever by a male, the greatest version by a female remains Lisa Gerrard's version on Toward The Within by Dead Can Dance (available through Amazon).
Truly a wonderful album, full of love, passion and ancient wisdom.
Early Clancy stuff, seriously presented..........2001-12-30
I have this album on vinyl issued on the Tradition label. There is a story, probably not true, that the boys recorded these songs in their kitchen around l956. It doesn't matter. If you like the Clancys and/or songs of the Irish uprisings, it is a must own. I have played it to death over the years, and had to buy a cassette reissue when my last turntable failed. Undoubtedly, one of these days I will buy this CD to replace the tape. I like almost everything on this collection. These are hymns of death, bravery, oppression, betrayal, guerilla warfare, grief and loss. Doesn't sound like fun, but it is great music. Later in their careers, the Clancys put out some great humorous songs, drinking songs, love songs...but this one is different. If you have an interest in Ireland's struggle against Britain, and sometimes the fight between factions of Irishmen, this is essential.

Brought Back Memories.......2007-07-13
Lots of great songs, including a few I'd all but forgotten, and a couple good ones I don't think I ever heard before.
On time and in great shape........2007-04-16
My order was on time and in great shape.
A very decent intro for the price.......2005-03-15
First: The correct samples for "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" (which has a jacket photo of a man & woman drinking in a dim pub) are found under the listing for "The Best of Irish Pub Songs: 20 Great Favorites", which has a jacket illustration of a drawing of a pink pub front called "Dan's Pub"; seems there's some information confusion between the two listings. Where the samples are for the "pink pub" recording are I have no idea.)
I first bought "All the Best Irish Drinking Songs" in cassette years ago to simply learn some pub songs before an Irish vacation. I wasn't looking for classic renditions or sublime technical achievement, just something to teach me the tunes.
For the price, I was very pleasantly surprised. The songs are great, and this assortment is hard to find in one recording. Whether the "pub atmosphere" in the background is contrived or authentic was irrelevant to me; I did feel that it enhanced the listening experience, however, so I think it's a nice touch. If inauthenticity in that kind of thing gets your cockles up, then look to the Clancy Brothers or any other Irish folk legends for "live" concert recordings, or Matt Molloy for an honest-to-gosh pub recording, but you won't find these tunes in one product for any price anywhere else. The only downsides I found with this economic recording were no lyric sheet, and tempos that might vary from "studio" versions of the same songs, but all in all, it's a very enjoyable little tape for a small investment.
Worst Irish CD EVER.......2004-12-14
This is the worst drinking song CD I have ever bought. For the record this is not the Jolly Beggermen in any way. Don't by this if you have a choice. The preformer kills the songs. I agree with the person who says that an Irish Drinking song recording should be done in an Irish Bar or Pub, recorded live.
Not the Same CD as Advertised.......2004-12-08
I bought this cd thinking it was recorded live(as some other reviewers stated) but it wasn't it. I was extremly dissapointed and returned it to Amazon. I would like to know the cd that everyoneis talking about...soiunds like it would be fun to listen to.

Great Irish Music.......2007-03-30
If you are new to the genre of Irish music, or just to the Dubliners and Clancy/Makem, then I would suggest this album. The selection of songs is great. Just remember, this is a Drinking Songs album. Don't expect any ballads. A note to Clancy/Makem fans: the tracks "Tim Finnegan's Wake", and "The Moonshiner" along with the introductions to "Juice of the Barley" and "Jug of Punch" are all previously unreleased material from the album "In Person at Carnegie Hall"
Perfect St. Pat's Pub CD.......2006-03-18
Each of the songs on this CD is worth listening to and singing poorly over a couple of pints. The fast paced songs are mixed well with a few slower ones, and each song is a gem.
This cd turned my Puerto Rican friend into an Irishman!.......2002-01-01
This is my favorite St. Patrick's Day cd and it's always a winner at parties. Top 40 shmorty...play this at your parties no matter what the crowd and watch all your friends become happy drunk irishmen right before your eyes as the party goes on.
The Dubliners do a few songs on this cd, but most are performed by the Clancy Brothers who are my absolute favorites. Powerful vocals and great lively music. Lotsa humor thrown in too.
Whiskey in the Jar performed by the Dubliners is Great!
Not too sure what song two is about, but the title is Beer, Beer, Beer.
Water is alright in Tay...Perfect song for drinkin'(especially a cold pint of Guiness).
The list goes on and on and then you get to my personal favorite: Finnegan's Wake...Fighting and drinking and people returning from the dead...A wonderful family get together song performed nicely by the Clancy Brothers. Lot's of comical stories in the music as in Juice of the Barley and Finnegan's Wake. The Parting Glass should not be played until nearly the end of any party...it's truly a parting song. Skip this until the end (I actually love this song, but when you hear it you will understand what I mean).
If you really want to liven up the party and you cater to a younger crowd, mix this cd with the punkish Dropkick Murphys music. They do some Irish folk covers like Rocky Road to Dublin, Finnegan's Wake etc...
Bainne na mo is an gamna and the juice of the barley for me!
Enjoy this cd and Don't Drink and Drive!
Because everyone's Irish once a year..........2001-04-03
There once was an album of green,
Full of songs about beer and poteen,
Twas great start to finish,
Likely 'cause of the Guinness,
So I give it five stars on your screen.
No Dirty Anglicans Allowed!.......2001-03-01
This is an excellent album to sing along with. I highly recommend it, but I do not think the Loyalists or anyone who sides with them have any right to enjoy these fantastic songs. They have caused enough harm to the great Irish people without now insulting them by attempting to share in their good and decent traditions. They should stick with their gloomy Protestant songs.

Something For Everyone -- Great Party CD!.......2006-04-03
I enjoy seasonal music. I love the fact that Music Choice on my cable system has a 'Seasonal Music' channel, because I think that music written for a specific time of year can help people to enjoy the holiday more.
Of course, when you're thinking about enjoying St. Patrick's Day more, people usually think about drinking a lot of green beer. And if you're one of those people, this is the CD compilation for you.
This CD has a lot more contemporary artists than the last Irish CD I reviewed: The Dropkick Murphys and The Pogues stand out in particular. The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners are also welcome additions to the CD.
There are still the old standbys - Frank Patterson sings the requisite "Danny Boy," The Dubliners contribute the title track "Whiskey In The Jar," and The Clancy Brothers offer up their rendition of the classic "Irish Rover." The Dropkick Murphys' take on "Wild Rover" was a high point for me, as was their "Fields of Athenry" - but then again, I'm a Dropkick Murphys fan anyway.
The songs on this compilation are fun, and singable (even if you can't sing - hey, who cares when you're drunk, right?). In two CDs, the only real disappointments were the two songs from The Pogues, whose live versions of "Dirty Old Town" and "Sally MacLennane" sound as if they were performed while the vocalist was plastered. That fits the theme of the compilation, but makes it tough to listen to. Listen to those two tracks later on in the evening and you'll be fine.
Of the two St. Patrick's Day offerings I was able to review this year, I'd say this one is my favorite. The music is more modern, and the performances more diverse. Plus you get two CDs, so you can listen longer. Enjoy, and Erin Go Bragh!
Nice but disparate (eclectic?) collection.......2006-03-15
The actual title is: "Whiskey In The Jar: Essential Irish Drinking Songs & Sing Alongs."
Amazon has the title reversed (with "Essential Irish Drinking..." first), so a search for "Whiskey In The Jar" won't find it! (ok, maybe it is better to have "Essential Irish Drinking" first).
Also note that a number of songs are "Live" recordings (that's not noted at this time in the Amazon song listing): Disc 1: Tracks 9, 10 & 11; on Disc 2: tracks 10, 14, 16 & 17 (the two Pogues songs on the disc are Live).
All good songs and first rate artists here, but quite a disparate range from very traditional to celtic rock. We used this CD as the basis for a great St. Patrick's day songs playlist for Cool Celtic (Music Sojourn) with similarly eclectic additions. The Pogues, the Young Dubliners, and The Drop Kick Murphys make up most of the more mod sounds on here - too bad that the Pogues version of "Whiskey In The Jar" didn't make it on this CD (it would have provided the same kind of contrast with the Dubliners' version as the rest of the cd does with the mix of artists & songs). At least it progresses through the tunes on each disc from more traditional to more punk - if you're drinking along with the tunes as they play, that ought to work out just about right by the end. This collection may be too eclectic for some. Those looking for the Traditional songs get more for their money here and can ignore the few rockers at the end of each disc. Those into the Pogues and Drop Kick Murphys more rockus sounds may not find enough of that to keep it playing except for around St. Patrick's day each year. However, for that purpose, it does satisfy!
