Sam Endicott will probably never be taken seriously. Not after fronting a band called Skabba the Hut. Not after switching ridiculous dreadlocks for an even more ridiculous faux-hawk. And certainly not after taking a feud with the Killers' Brandon Flowers seriously. It's too bad because Endicott's band the Bravery has made a second album that is worth taking seriously. On The Sun and the Moon, the New York five-piece trades in the faux British accents and Duran Duran synthesizer flares of its self-titled 2005 debut for something a little more real. Bursting to life with sweeping, opulently textured songs like "This Is Not the End" and "Time Won't Let Me Go," it's a warmer and statelier set that seems somehow more dignified. While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.
So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction.He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.
I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.
To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

With his early '90s band, the Red House Painters, San Francisco's Mark Kozelek struck a chord of disquiet and bohemian poignancy that made that band the darling of the scribbling-poems-to-the-pretty-barista-who-will-never-know-my-name set. With lovely, unadorned melodies and Kozelek's angst-ridden tributes to disillusionment, the Red House Painters influenced a score of later bands who lacked his rich melodic imagination and incisive lyrics -- Low is a good example -- resulting in Kozelek himself being typecast as the maestro of "mopecore." Then he did something unforgivable in the minds of some of his fans: he evolved.
Without rehashing the epic travails and record-biz nightmares that caused RHP's fine album "Old Ramon" to be delayed in release for years after it was finished, the good news is that "Ghosts of the Great Highway" not only continues the evolutionary path Kozelek took on later RHP work like "Songs for a Blue Guitar" and his solo album "Rock and Roll Singer," it's a masterpiece on its own terms, and the most magnificent rock album of 2003.
If you thought they didn't make albums like Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" anymore, cue up "Ghosts of the Great Highway," and marvel over the fact that Kozelek and company are able to cross-pollinate folk, country, punk, and psychedelic influences without sounding the least bit retro, stealing the purifying flame of Crazy Horse meltdowns like "Cortez the Killer" while sounding like no one but themselves. If you're a Nick Drake fan warming your hands over the ashes of "Pink Moon," consider the fact that at least one song on this album, "Duk Koo Kim," is as beautiful and otherwordly as anything in Drake's oeuvre (particularly the acoustic version, released on a limited edition EP last year), and consider the possibility that Kozelek is as unfairly ignored and marginalized in our time as Drake was in his.
"Glenn Tipton," "Duk Koo Kim," "Carry Me Ohio" and "Gentle Moon" are all instant classics, full of heart, understated grace, and authentic yearning, while avoiding the art-school sentimentality of Kozelek's early work. "Duk Koo Kim" is especially worthy of note, reinvented here as a 14-minute folk-punk-psychedelic apocalypse, with backwards guitars, Portuguese guitars, and bells swirling around Kozelek's aching voice. (I can't praise this track enough, other than to say that if I was a very bright teenager with a set of headphones and a bong, I'd probably decide to become a musician after hearing this song alone.) It's one of the most terrifying love songs ever written, as emotionally naked as the songs on Joni Mitchell's "Blue." (Like several of the songs on this album, "Duk Koo Kim" is the tale of a hero who died young -- in this case, a Korean boxer killed in the ring.) The only misstep on the record is Kozelek's formula-grunge treatment of his gorgeous tune "Lily and Parrots," which appeared as a hidden acoustic track on his "White Christmas Live."
At his best, Kozelek writes and sings like an oracle, and plays feedback-drenched electric guitar with as much intensity as his punk and heavy metal heroes while never descending into mere chaos and noise. If you're a music critic or record reviewer (I happen to be an editor of Wired magazine, and have no connection to Kozelek), entertain the notion that instead of hyping the latest skinny-tie buzz band that no one will care about in 3 years, you might consider running a piece on Kozelek and this album. If you're a music fan who enjoys Wilco, Iron and Wine, and other forward-looking traditionally-influenced bands, give this a listen. It's far beyond what almost everyone is doing these days.
"Ghosts" disc two, 2007
Hearing these bonus tracks (two brilliant, one fine, and two only mediocre), I suggest that what Kozelek should have done was to release "Ghosts" originally with the instrumental "Arrival" inserted somewhere in the running order, and finishing with either version of "Somewhere." Kozelek's reinvention of West Side Story's yearning love song is profound, heart-wrenching, and gorgeous. (The yearning is even more poignant knowing that the song's composers, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein, were gay and bisexual respectively, but the feelings expressed are universal.) "Somewhere" would have been an emotionally devastating capper to a magnificent album; at least we have it now. I prefer the slightly punchier second take, which employs the same Portuguese guitar-like instrument as "Duk Koo Kim" on the original album, but the string arrangement on the first version is also lovely. The straightforward folky reading of "Salvador Sanchez" is fine; the other two bonus tracks are merely competent. In my dreams, Kozelek would also have supplemented this bonus disc with the astounding double-tracked acoustic version of "Duk Koo Kim" that appeared only on a vinyl EP -- it's one of the true masterpieces of his career, and is now in danger of being a "lost" track available only to connoisseurs. But enough second-guessing. This is a great album, now made slightly greater.

The Cowboy Junkies' Michael Timmins is a most literary songwriter. On the Toronto quartet's Pale Sun Crescent Moon, Timmins imbeds lines from William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom into the song "First Recollection" and a line from Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "The General in His Labyrinth" in the song "Seven Years" without it seeming the least bit awkward. He has found the perfect literary voice for his writing in his sister Margo Timmins, whose alto is all smoke and suggestion. Songs are not poems, however, and never was that distinction more obvious than it is here. The album's so-called songs float in atmospheric harmonies, unshaped by melody or meter. For those who like incandescent vocals, this CD ranks right up there with albums like Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece.
Other than Trinity Sessions, which is in a world of its own, I haven't been too impressed with the other CD's by this band, but in this effort Margo and the boys found something that reaches deep and will stay with you.

I like women in rock with harmonious and soothing voices, and the singer here definitely falls into the category. However, I found this album very boring, but her voice is excellent. Most of the songs sound alike with the exception of it's most commercial recording of the anniversary song.
I don't know their catalog of music but I hope that the rest of their records aren't as bland as this one. Just my thoughts..I seem to have the lowest star review here so other people seem to appreciate their haunting lyrics hopefully over their non melodies.

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Isaac Brock--the singer, guitarist and leader behind the enormously popular alt-pop act Modest Mouse--would be few people's first choice for a covers album. But that is part of the genius behind this surprisingly excellent album. Sun Kil Moon leader Mark Kozelek's own recorded cover choices in the past--Kiss, Simon and Garfunkel, AC/DC, and most successfully John Denver--hew far closer to the traditional indie approach to covers: a semi-ironic, studied transformation of a tune into something it wasn't before. With Sun Kil Moon's breezy take on Brock's compositions, there is no irony, just a true love for the weird pop genius that Modest Mouse has in spades. Songs are slowed down a lot and stretched out, and frequently you don't recognize the tune until the chorus kicks in, but it totally works even if you've never heard the originals. Mark Kozelek has released six studio albums as frontman for Red House Painters along with three solo records; however, it is with Mark's new band Sun Kil Moon that he has received some of his greatest commercial and critical success. When Amazon recommended this album, I thought I'd give it a try. I listened to a few of the samples, and then went to iTunes and listened some more. I downloaded Ocean Breathes Salty and fell in love straight away! Eventually I bought the album and have appreciated the work of Sun Kil Moon with the wonderful acoustic blends and mellow sounds.
When I found out that this album was a cover of Modest Mouse songs, I had to listen to some of the Modest Mouse songs to compare. Being very inexperienced in both artists, I felt that the Modest Mouse songs were, quite plainly, unappealing(especially Ocean Breathes Salty). However Sun Kil Moon's take on the songs were great. Mark has stripped back some songs to great moody and atmospheric numbers, with his voice adding to the instruments around. If you want an album to relax to (I play it when I'm studying) and to lose yourself in, I recommend it!!

I know nothing of Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters/insert other name-dropping incident here], but I AM familiar with being a *huge* Modest Mouse fan.
That being said, I also have eclectic (admittedly bizarrely so) taste, and when this version of "Neverending Math Equation" was put on a mix CD for me, I didn't even realize what it was (I didn't have the track listing handy). I just thought, "Wow, this is a nice song... I wonder who is this?" Then it started sounding eerily familiar and as it dawned on me what the song actually was, I couldn't stop giggling. Bought the entire album, and now it pretty much lives on repeat.
If you're a "Modest Mouse Purist," so to speak, you may not like this album... AT ALL. And from what I've read, if you're a die-hard fan of *this* artist, you probably won't like it either. But if you're either a) addicted to cover songs, and/or b) readily open to and fascinated by the idea of reinterpreting different musical styles, then I recommend not only getting this album, but also getting the Modest Mouse originals and enjoy the Dichotomy Circus that ensues...
How About Some New Material..........2006-04-30
After discovering and falling in love with Sun Kil Moon, I started buying other Mark Kozelek and Red House Painter albums. None of them captured my attention like "Ghosts of the Great Highway." They were just too mopey, and I didn't like his vocals as much. Listening to "Tiny Cities" I can't help but notice Kozelek has reverted back to his old style (especially the vocals).
I have found that my favorite artists and albums successfully mix together melancholy and hope. The vast majority of Kozelek's previous work (excluding "Ghosts of the Great Highway") lacks the second part of the equation: hope. Unfortunately, "Tiny Cities" is no exception.
I never expect Sun Kil Moon to eclipse their debut, and that's ok with me. I would, however, like to see them try. And the only way they can do that is by writing their own songs...

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. --Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.

'earth, sun, moon' was arguably l&r's artistic peak, demonstrating a range previous unseen in earlier albums. it walks the fine line between artistic credibility and commecial success. 'no new tale to tell' proved to be a massive college hit, and understandably so. the 'wooo wooo WOOO wooo' intro is a definite ear-catcher and strangely appropriate intro. 'no new tale to tell's' outro is one of the finer outros your likely to hear, especially with daniel ash's trademark guitar burning up the background: 'when your up, it's a long way down, when you're down, it's a long way up. it's all the same thing, no new tale to tell.' existentialism, for some reason, always sounds better in a catchy melody.
a few of 'express'' crumbs landed on 'earth, sun, moon's' table. the album's first two tracks, 'mirror people' and 'youth' are awash in the same fuzzy, psychedelic sonics that made 'express' such a standout album. based on these two tracks, the listener might think he or she is on her way to 'express' part ii. however, 'welcome tomorrow' dispells any notion that this is another 'express.' the following tracks, 'no new tale to tell,' 'here on earth,' 'waiting for the flood,' and 'rainbird' (the exception being the rawkish 'lazy'), and 'everybody wants to go to heaven' see l&r leaning towards more pastoral/spiritual plains, and asking questions about life, religion, god, family, etc. and it succeeds fabulously.
'earth, sun, moon' saw the band pull the reigns in on their trademark sound without abandoning their identity, all the while expanding their pallet and creating their definitive album.

the end of an era in A-ha's music.......2007-06-30
Being released in 1992, it still contains the rythms that have always characterized A-ha. The ballads are amazing and the lyrics are maybe the best that Paul Savoy have written. The use of keyboards of A-ha keeps being a wonder, and even when in they use mainly a synthesizer amog all the songs, they're still the dominant musical feature.
Within the songs, ballads like Crying In The Rain, Rolling Thunder, Slender Frame and the title track are the best content in the album, being soft, sensitive and delicate. Another great feature is the pop sound keyboard applied in the fast tracks such as Sycamore Leaves and Cold River, which applies also excellent guitars by Paul. I Call Your Name and Early Morning are nice pop ballads but in times they seem out of tune. The Way We Talk is a song for staying shock for the new style of "ruining an album just at the end". Now here is where experience enters among listeners, even before spliting, they were just starting to try some alternative sounds, such as in (Seemingly) Non Stop July, and as a person hears the new century albums, one notices the brutal change.
When it comes to the bad aspects I can say a lot, too. First of all it isn't new for A-ha to try to enchant the audience with beautiful choruses for hiding the not-so-good structure of the songs. Also they've stayed in the same musical mood since Stay On These Roads, the structure of these songs and sound patterns can be characterized in their past 4 albums.
In conclusion, even with it's failures, it's excellent for we, the fan audience and also for the new listeners for identify their sounds and create ideas.

A-ha's most mature/eclectic album to date .......2006-03-28
From the powerful melancholic rendition (would we expect nothing less from A-ha by now? haha) of Carole King's classic 'Crying In The Rain' (originally a hit in the 60's by the Everly Brothers) to the short somber closer of 'Seemingly Nonstop July,' A-ha makes a terrific sound change that is both pleasing and fitting. Morten Harket has a simply gifted vocal range that allows him free reign to sing anything put in front of him. Magne Furuholmen and Pal Waaktaar have a unique sense of melody, arrangment and lyricism which is put to the test and mastered with this album. Not only do the tracks have a soft, groovy and sometimes dramatically-operatic tone, but they also have perceptive depth and sensibility. Check out the title track and see how one can feel lost and long for that place of serenity lying out of reach. Check out 'I Call Your Name' and notice the heartbreaking image of being still in love with your spouse while the whole relationship has fallen apart. 'Waiting For Her' may seem adolescent, but Morten's delivery makes it all the more relevant for anyone in that situation. 'The Way We Talk' is a short but pleasant gift when Magne takes center stage as lead vocals, and does an impressive job with it.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this album to fans of A-ha or just fans of this type of music in general. As a music fan, nothing impresses me more than seeing diversity and versatility with an artist(s). A-ha made a stunning leap with "East Of The Sun, West Of The Moon" and that caused many listeners to dismiss it as shoddy, mismanaged and overall poor in nature. But I urge the interested reader (and listener) to judge the recordings for themselves, not what the critics dictate. Just because one changes their sound does not mean they have changed their hearts for the craft. After all, don't we (as individuals) have different sides to ourselves that not all totally understand? Think about it .... go out and purchase this wonderful album and feel connected for a short period of time with the themes, sound and tone of this album .... I would give it over 10 stars if I could!
