Customer Reviews:
Not the usual Lisa.......2006-10-12
I was very dissappointed in this new CD. There is not much real bossa nova rhythm in this CD, just mild hints of it. And some tunes are nowhere close to bossa. I prefer here fantastic earlier recordings that contains real hard core bossa nova. NK

The '50s saw the beginning of "third stream music," whereby musicians attempted to fuse jazz and classical music into a viable synthesis. More often than not, either or both were diluted, but sometimes successful, colorful, movielike music resulted. On this live date, Lalo Schifrin (of Mission: Impossible TV fame) employs the WDR Rundfunkorchester of Cologne and the jazz talents of Christian McBride (bass), David Sanchez (tenor sax), and Jeff Williams (drums) to create a textural and cohesive whole. Lush strings and punctuating brass frame numerous solo sections where Sanchez and trumpeter James Morrison shine. Schifrin's expansive orchestral scores make effective use of jazz rhythms, particularly on arrangements of Coltrane's "Naima" and Alex North's "Theme from Spartacus," creating a wholly engaging and cinematic third-stream experience. --Wally Shoup
Album Description
Music by Schifrin, Coltrane, Silver, North and Rimsky Korsakov, all arranged by Lalo Schifrin. The unbelievably huge sound of a symphony orchestra, big jazz band and all-star players Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, David Sanchez and James Morrison. Intersections is the 5th in Schifrin's 'Jazz meets the Symphony series', which has garnered 3 Grammy nominations.

One Of The Best Straight Ahead Jazz Albums Ever Made! .......2006-12-24
This Cd Is amazing! It features the great altoist Bobby Watson and John Hicks on piano,Victor Lewis on drums and Curtis Lundy on bass .. This cd will send you into a trance after the first song! it is so amazing how watson hicks and lundy and lewis work together as a group every song is played so great and will leave you wanting to hear more.. This is something that I will keep in my collection forever --- The standout tracks on this cd are " Elementary Mr.Watson " and " Someday Soon " and "Soul Eyes " and Watson's Amazing alto solo on " Pent Up House " trust me... If you like jazz or bobby watson or just want to hear a relaxing musicial masterpiece that is well played this is the cd for you!
A very fine outing indeed.......2003-04-27
This is a companion disc to Love Remains, one of the greatest jazz discs ever recorded. Both have Bobby Watson (alto sax), John Hicks (piano), and Curtis Lundy (bass). Love Remains, recorded in November of 1986, has Marvin "Smitty" Smith in the drums chair; Naima's Love Song, recorded in April of 1988, has Victor Lewis. Both are great drummers, so there's little to choose between them. And these are both great, great jazz discs.
What makes Love Remains just edge out Naima's Love Song--and this is probably purely a matter of personal taste--is that the former exudes a profoundly intertwined sadness and joy that the latter lacks. The general mood of Naima's Love Song is exuberance, certainly an emotional state perfectly in accord with jazz esthetics. And it is one of the more exuberant, ebullient jazz discs ever recorded. So it all just comes down to which you like better. I guess for me, it's just harder to pull off wistful joy, and when it is pulled off, it's something very special. Don Pullen, the late lamented pianist could do that, as could Joe Henderson--also sorely missed--and Tom Harrell (thankfully still around).
Both discs feature Bobby Watson, my overall favorite altoist, at the height of his powers. And I don't think John Hicks has ever sounded better than on these two discs. What are you waiting for? Grab both of these fine discs while they're still easily available.

Customer Reviews:
The Band of the 70's.......2001-04-12
This band features guys who had played with 60's trailblazers such as Silver, Mingus, Blakey, and Cannonball creating vibrant and energetic music of their own in Ford-era New York City. Cliff Jordan jois the trio on a few numbers and possesses a powerful sound. In my humble opinion, this band is the best quartet that assembled to play straight ahead jazz in the 1970's in the States. For a low price, 32 Jazz gives them to you live and uncut.
Sit back, relax and enjoy. This is great.......1999-03-16
One of the best, playing the best. This is a great CD to relax to, have dinner over or enjoy a romantic evening. With Clifford Jordan accompaning you cannot go wrong.

Jay Trachtenberg, The Austin Chronicle, October 29, 1999
A local pianist/composer, Terry Bowness has delivered as cogent an Austin jazz introduction as any heard in recent years. The compatibility, interplay, and sonic quality of Bowness' piano/guitar front lines are refreshing to ears that are more often accustomed to the shouts of saxophones and trumpets.
Of the nine tunes here, eight are varied Bowness originals. They range from the straight-ahead stylings of "What's For Dinner?" to the slow, gospel strains of "Brother Thad" and the funky fusion of the most adventurous track of the set, "Linear Digression." There's also a delightful arrangement of the Coltrane classic "Naima," complete with a lilting Bob Marley bassline that melds beautifully with the piano's haunting melody. Two pensive solo performances and an intimate duo with Mitch Watkins show the pianist's indebtedness to Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans.
Customer Reviews:
Smooth, excellent Austin,TX Jazz!.......2002-04-07
Nice stuff. Really good keyboard and guitar. I've listened to at least a hundred times and still love it. Some of it reminds me of the german lable, ECM during the 80's.
I DEFINITELY recommend this CD - What a Sonic Treat!.......2001-04-27
This CD will be loved by musicians and non-musicians alike. The non-musicians will enjoy the melodies and the emotions each piece conveys. The musicians will very much enjoy Terry's fascination with SOUND - which chords and which notes work with the other instruments and within the context of the whole phrase. I remember playing with someone who would sit at a piano and just PLAY, just experiment with notes, chords, chord progressions. He'd play 2-3 notes together and say, "Listen to this - it's not quite right is it? But now..." and he'd play those same notes but in between two other chords, "It works! Isn't that beautiful? Just listen to that." THIS is why musicians will love this CD - because they'll enjoy repeatedly listening very closely in order to find those unique musical moments that can only be created by someone who loves and appreciates SOUND and all it encompasses. I definitely recommend this CD to anyone and everyone.
Terry Bowness CD - is a "breath of fresh air" to jazz!.......1999-10-13
The debut outing of jazz pianist Terry Bowness is truly a breath of fresh air for fans of instrumental jazz music. Each composition and arrangement on the disc is both thoughtful and spontaneously infectious jazz! My favorite piece on the Aardvark Records release is "two thirty three", an odd-meter work that is also very musical in the effect it has on the listener. Unlike many pieces that utilize this type of inference of rhthmic periodicity, "two thirty three" does not encumber the listener with the fact that the compositon is "complicated" rhythymically. You just hear the sincere effect of great playing and good music! Also of note on this recording is the contemporary arrangement and treatment of John Coltrane's "Naima". The kid respectfully pays tribute to the jazz tradition through this selection. All of the selections on this project are worth a couple of hearings at least and should be a part of most any serious jazz collection. Look for more work from this recording artist. Remember the name: Bowness - pronounced with a long 'o' sound! Buy this CD, you'll really enjoy what you hear...

Customer Reviews:
One of jazz's best kept secrets.......2002-08-12
I had the pleasure of hearing Ms. Shamborguer perform last year at the Ford International Jazz Festival in Detroit. She really
knocked me out! Finally this spring, Ed Love began playing her CD "A Blossom Sings" on his program on WDET 101.9FM.
At first my opportunity, I purchased a copy and was not disappointed. Naima is the epitomy of the compleat jazz vocalist...You
might say she borders on the eclectic. Naima performs the gambit from Ellington & Miles Davis to Antonio Carlos Jobin. She
even puts a fresh new spin on Paul Williams' "You and Me Against the World". If that wasn't enough, she does several of her
own compositions. If you can only own one female jazz vocalist's CD, this is the one to have. Her performances are powered
by such fine instrumentalists as Buddy Budson, Marcus Belgrave, Marion Hayden and many others. Be sure to catch the
rousing finale penned by Naima called "Music in the Air". Ms. Shamborguer, we need to hear more from you...Soon!
