Though this release carries the deceptive subtitle Another Record by Ry Cooder, the virtuosic guitarist and ethnomusicological adventurer has never released another album quite like this. And neither has anyone else. After brilliant side trips into the music of pre-Castro Cuba and pre-baseball Chavez Ravine, Cooder returns to the Depression-era and Dust Bowl ballads that marked his earliest solo releases of the 1970s. Yet most of this material is original, offering a populist parable of three fellow travelers: Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse, and the Reverend Tom Toad. The tradition of putting pointed social commentary in the mouths of animals extends from Animal Farm to Pogo, and Buddy seems like a feline cross between Woody Guthrie and Joe Hill--a troubadour of union solidarity, interspecies brotherhood, and radical populism. Though Cooder's cartoon vocals occasionally sound a little mannered, the music throughout ranks with his best, as he reunites with conjunto accordion master Flaco Jimenez and soul singers Terry Evans and Bobby King, enlists banjo brothers Pete and Mike Seeger, and receives inspired support from the Chieftains' Paddy Moloney, pianist Van Dyke Parks, and drummers Jim Keltner and (his son) Joachim Cooder. Whether he's channeling his inner Chet Baker on "Green Dog" or closing with the utopian vision of "There's a Bright Side Somewhere," Cooder shows more sides of his multifaceted music than he has on any previous release. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
On My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound and feeling of the "dust bowl songs" he first explored more than three decades ago on such groundbreaking albums as his self-titled 1970 debut and 1971's In The Purple Valley. In fact, he's joined by old friends like pianist Van Dyke Parks and drummer Jim Keltner who were with him at the start of his extraordinary, ultimately globe-spanning musical odyssey, which has yielded him six Grammy Awards to date, several more nominations, and perennial acclaim. My Name Is Buddy is also a journey, a phantasmagorical rendering in music, words and pictures of the travels of three unlikely cohorts - Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse and Reverend Tom Toad - as they meander through the west "in the days of labor, big bosses, farm failures, strikes, company cops, sundown towns, hobos and trains...the America of yesteryear." For this allegorical tale, Cooder marshals all his remarkable skills as a producer, arranger, songwriter, soundtrack composer and musicologist. (The Christian Science Monitor recently dubbed him "a modern-day Alan Lomax.") My Name Is Buddy recalls Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory - that is, if it had been enacted by the articulate animal characters of Walt Kelly's classic comic Pogo. Cooder conjures up the dark shadows of an earlier time to wryly comment on the political and social issues of the present. As back-story to his songs, Cooder has written short stories for each one and they're accompanied by evocative illustrations from noted San Antonio-based painter and muralist Vincent Valdez, all of which are included in a specially designed package.Customer Reviews:
Good--but it doesn't hold together for me as well as the reviews described.......2007-07-12
I cannot fault the musicianship and the storyline is fascinating. Anyone who has a past anchored in the Dust Bowl area will identify with the stories---Cooder must have done his research from testimonials of folks who'd been there. If you are interested in this topic, the Oklahoma Historical Society has an extensive oral history collection, plus there were many interviews conducted by the WPA during the Depression. (The Indian Pioneer Histories)
One thing, I'm happy I got this CD used. I'd probably rate it less if I'd paid $16.99 for it and seen the 'eco packaging' already raveling at the edges. Yes, I'd like friendlier CD covers, but please can we at least get archival quality here? I do plan on keeping this CD.
...it wasn't that long ago...........2007-06-18
Ry Cooder seems to be able to find the wonderful diversity of our world lurking under the notes. He plays and out comes ...the heat of the desert as desperation in Paris, Texas, ...the saucy spirit of persistence in Buena Vista Social Club, the fun "Oh I forgot how happy music makes me" in Chicken Skin Music. There are so many. And whats amazing is that there is hardly an album or soundtrack that you don't listen to - I mean really listen.
This is another amazing effort. Full of depression and unionizations references. There is Buddy (the buddy system), Lefty (left - get it), J. Edgar the pig (you can do this one yourself). Characters, good and bad, the truck drivers, the Klan (Republiklans), the poll police (the man) and the wonderful farmer's daughter.
I think the message could have been stronger. Pete Seeger is definitely part of the inspiration. He was master of the alagory - but he had to be. Those were the days when the man would pop out of nowhere and you would be gone (maybe lost to the coyotes). Seeger let his listener pull the power of the issue out of his prose. Ry Cooder could have been abit more "in our face" with these issues. 'Chavez Ravine' proves he has a punch.
But - fear not - this is too good to pull back a star. Listen to it and tell the younger folks that there were times when it was hard - really hard - to find the bright side.
Sorry Ry..........2007-06-12
Now, let's hear from more of those folks who couldn't write a negative review if their life depended on it....Those are the ones that always wind up at the top of Amazon's Customer reviews.
ry cooder at his best.......2007-06-08
Ry's own voice.......................................2007-05-31
(a) sings in a style I remember him most for, that is, in a straightforward unstrained manner, as he did on his earlier albums that I admired so much, and
(b) brings back to the arena some political folk sentiments, so we have some Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger sprinklings along the way.
And he also brings along something rather new for him, a concept album built along a developing lyrical theme. So we have a story line that runs the length of the album.
As always, excellent sidemen and women bring invaluable contributions. But my first thiought on hearing this was that Ry was letting his own voice take its rightful place in the mix again, not so much at the expense of spotlighting his string playing and the guests.

R&B jack of all trades Joe Thomas has garnered his share of success (three gold singles, the platinum All That I Am, a prominent role on Mariah Carey's "Thank God I Found You") without rising to superstardom. My Name is Joe, his third album, is his bid to change that. Fully loaded mainstream soul, Joe splits most of its time between "sensitive" ballads ("Treat Her Like a Lady" suggests sending a greeting card) and randy I'll-freak-you declarations; at its conceptual limit, it combines both in the same song. With a fine voice and OK-but-well-crafted songs, Joe is, ahem, positioned to step into Keith Sweat's bedroom slippers. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

If he could only hook up with Babyface.......2006-06-12
His downfall on pretty much all of his LPs, as I see it, is the fact that he doesn't have a Babyface or someone like that making songs that cater to and really accentuate his singing ability.
I've always thought he could use better song-writing more than any other male artist out (and of his caliber, of course).
"My Name Is Joe" is one of two Joe albums I own (the other is "All That I Am" which I like 98 percent of listeners bought because of the breakout single "All The Things" -- Joe at his best vocally!).
Again, the radio singles "Stutter" (the remix version with Mystikal was hot!), "I Wanna Know (What Turns You On)" and "Treat Her Like A Lady" are all soulful, midtempo grooves you can ride to and relax to.
He also threw on the track "Thank God I Found You" with Mariah Carey and Nas that samples Keith Sweat's "Make It Last Forever" -- a back in the day jam from '88.
This album is listenable ... you'll have songs you enjoy and a few that are indistinctive enough to make your mind wonder.
But buy this album because you're a fan of great singing and overall good music.

Gyptian comes through.......2006-10-05
LOVERS MOOD.......2006-09-26
It's no surprise that Gyptian isn't about to bust any hardcore dancehall business, but you might be surprised by the very laid-back, almost horizontal feeling of MY NAME IS GYPTIAN. Alright, so young Gyptian might not be the most technically gifted singer you'll ever hear, but his voice is super sweet and sincere and he knows exactly what to do with a love song, like the excellent BEAUTIFUL LADY, or the great combination with Teflon, WOMAN I LOVE YOU, which is even better. In fact, just about half the songs selected here are lovers numbers, so if you're not in a romantic mood you might want to think twice. Then again, there are also some worthwhile cultural excursions, including, of course, SERIOUS TIMES, as well as the very majestic BENG BENG and the contemplative STOP THE FUSSING & FIGHTING. I also really like the duet with Keisha on HOLIDAY, which carries the album out on a cool, gentle breeze.
There are certainly a couple of hiccups here, though they're relatively minor, like the over-cooked drum programming on SCHOOL GIRL, and one or two rather aimless vocal performances, as well as Roundhead's more or less pointless appearance on the ganja anthem, THROUGH THE VALLEY. I was also a bit disappointed at the exclusion of the lovely STEPPING HIGHER (for Irievibrations) and the even lovelier BAD MIND (for Amplex) - definitely worth picking up if you come across the 45s. I'd license both in heartbeat. Either way, MY NAME IS GYPTIAN is still a very good, very solid debut, probably a three-and-a-half star effort, but I'm rounding up. Oh, and by the way, keep your eyes peeled for the sound system relick of MAMA as SOUNDBOY DON'T CRY on the classic FULL UP (PASS THE KUTCHIE) rhythm, a recent Wings International 7" release.
That's all for now, except to send blessings to Bramoi for the recent mentions. Bramoi - your reviews are always on point and a pleasure to read!
Serious Times, SERIOUS Expectations. . ........2006-09-26
Gyptian was actually discovered by the same individual (known as 'Mr Wong') who discovered I-Wayne and originally marketed as having a sound similar to the earth shattering voice of Jah Cure. Now, I'd actually call him a better (SINGING) version of the underrated Norrisman, with a nasally kind of strong chanting when he's at his best, but it is a voice all his own. He originally attracted attention with his MASSIVE Serious Times single (and didnt we all expect this album to be named Serious Times?)and has maintained the high standards with his subsequent releases for various producers, most notably the wonderful Is Their a Place for Vendetta which is absent here.
Gyptian the album is a piece that will take a while to grow on you. It doesn't actually just blow you away on all levels the first few times you listen to it, probably due to Gyptian's age, as he hasn't yet reached his full level of development lyrically or hasnt yet grown to just do whatever, so a few of the tunes here you can tell he's holding back a little, but that will come with time. Definitely Gyptian, the finished article will be something reggae hasn't seen in awhile.
The best 2 tunes here are produced by the same individual, Kemar Mcgregor. The opener is the best song! Beng Beng is MASSIVE, even moreso than Serious Times (more on that in a second). The song is backed with a beautiful nyah drum riddim which Gyptian digs his claw deep into and mashes so hard! Beng Beng is one of the best songs I've ever heard, simply! The other tune, the obligatory ode to she who gives life, Mama, over the simply magical Triumphant riddim, also with the drum, is one of my favorite tunes by the young artist.
You also have to check Beautiful Lady (which started to grow on me immediately after my girlfriend identified it as her favorite track) just an all around wonderful track. Much of the direction here was done VP and I think at some points they take Gyptian in the wrong direction by putting him over the older sounding riddims, his voice breathes New School and he should have been allowed to identify with his era a little more (and shame elimanating Is There a Place from the fold). Their biggest fumble, however, is the re-do of Serious Times. If you really like the tune (and I love it) you'll notice it has been slightly redone taking it down just slightly, just as they did with Turbulence's Notorious.
But that's the bad (along with a just odd combination with Roundhead on the weed anthem Through the Valley, we know Roundhead is wicked and he loves weed more than oxgen, but those are two artists who should have never met on a song). The album picks wayyyyyyyyyy back up on the nice youth anthem School Girl. Just a really cool 'innocent' record and the rest of the album is fire! Take My Money, Keep on Knoking, What are We Fighting For?, Stop the Fussing and Holiday are all winners. Particularly the nice laid back Take My Money and Keep on Knocking very derivative of Serious Times with a nice message which is very clever. Also love Holiday which does nice in placing Gyptian with a nice female vocalist, the unknown Keisha (love to see session singers getting big opportunities) with a sax backing.
Overall, for a debut and for how young Gyptian is this is a very very nice album. I wouldn't have even minded waiting until early '07 for this one to drop at all, but I'm still happy it's here sameway. What Gyptian represents is some of the wonderful new young talent coming from Iland, and look for that sophomore jinx to miss Gyptian by a mile. This is just the beginning, what follows will surely be magic.

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29
I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

An Overlooked Classic in the Streisand Catalog...."Why Did I Choose You".......2006-04-14
This album has sometimes been overshadowed by the TV special, which may seem odd, considering most of the songs were sung on the show. Barbra reenters the recording studio and really waxes one classic after another. By this time, she was starting to shed some of her kooky image from the early Sixties, though she still retained her individual and unique appeal to her ever-growing legions of fans.
One look at some of the selections will tell you that Babs was branching out for mainstream acceptance, most noticeably in her first recording of a Gershwin tune "Someone To Watch Over Me". This tune had been done to death by hundreds of singers, everyone from Sinatra to Ella to Johnny Mathis, but Streisand's version really sticks out. Her vocal range really stretches the limits of this song and makes it heard in a new light that the likes of Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald had bypassed.
But the one true standout of this overlooked album is the torch song "Why Did I Choose You". Even my male friends who hear this song (and these are not "wussies" either) often ask, "Who sang that song?" Then when I tell them who it is, the first word they say is "Wow". Listening to this song today after hundreds of listens still brings a lump to my throat. This song and "He Touched Me" from the follow-up "My Name Is Barbra 2" are both bookend "Streisand Classics".
Just a pure voice soaring and gliding, singing about the virtues of her man and "Why she chose him". Unlike today, the Streisand of the Sixties did not hype up the sentiment factor in her interpretations, but here she brings just enough pathos and emotion to hit a homerun. Dare I say the hardest of hearts will not be moved when they hear this song ?

NBC's hit comedy series about a likeable degenerate who wins $100,000 in the lottery, gets hit by a car, loses his winning ticket, and tries to reverse his karma by making amends to everyone he's ever hoodwinked succeeds in duplicating the goofy, feel-good mood of the show. Mixing dialogue snippets with proven rock and country hits employed in first-season episodes, the repertoire also includes an instrumentally annoying, if rhythmically hypnotic, vocal version of the show's theme song by the tongue-twisting Nescobar-a-lop-lop and the Camden Country Band. Matthew Sweet, Uncle Kracker, and headbangers Van Nuys show up with new recordings of songs which appeared on the show, while John Hiatt's engaging, ripsaw rendition of John Lennon's "Instant Karma!" seems included only to make hay from actor Jason Lee's mantra ("Karma is a funny thing"). The surprise is that the soundtrack manages to seem thoroughly contemporary, even though many of the tracks--particularly Sammy Davis Jr.'s rendition of "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)" may be older than Earl himself. --Alanna NashAlbum Description
The soundtrack to the #1 NBC comedy features brand-new, never-before-released tracks from Matthew Sweet, Uncle Kracker, John Hiatt and rock newcomers Van Nuys, recorded exclusively for the soundtrack. In addition, the album includes some of Earl's favorite songs used in episodes which aired during the premiere '05-'06 season. The soundtrack also contains key sound bytes from the show, and an unheard vocal version of the "My Name Is Earl" theme song.Customer Reviews:
