The title of this CD tells it all. Here is one popular classic after another, some folk or traditional, some operatic, some religious or inspirational, some pop. The result in the throat/mind/sensibility of any other singer might be soupy, sappy, or simply uninteresting, but Bryn Terfel--he of the rolling bass-baritone voice who can smoothly deliver notes and phrases at any dynamic level--turns this generous, somewhat sentimental recital into something beautiful and special. After a rousing "Toreador Song" from Carmen, sung with just the right weight (most baritones find it too low, most basses too high) comes a ravishing version of "Shenandoah"; a fine Welsh song is followed by the stunning duet from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, with Andrea Bocelli singing the tenor part gleamingly and Terfel considerately underplaying his hand. And so it continues through Brahms' Lullaby and Schubert's Ave Maria; the "Love Theme from Titanic" sung with great restraint; renditions of "Danny Boy" and "Home Sweet Home" which are just beautiful; the spirituals "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "At the River," slightly anachronistic but still effective; the gluey "If I Can Help Somebody"; and a few more. It's amazing that Terfel can bring such variety to material which is temperamentally so similar. Some of the arrangements are a bit sticky and overdone, but overall, this disc is a beauty for all seasons. It will make a lovely gift to music lovers of all types. --Robert Levine

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Voice, Cheap Music.......2006-04-27

Bryn Terfel sings everything beautifully. The difficulty with this CD is that some of the music is extremely tawdry.
"The Lord is My Shepherd" and "Abide With Me" are very nicely sung, although the arrangements (like almost all hymn arrangements) leave a good bit to be desired.
The big surprise was to hear him sing "Lazybones" to perfection.
But on the whole it is far better to hear him sing music whose quality matches that of his voice.

1 out of 5 stars You are all idiots.......2006-04-04

Bryn is aweful. This CD is horrific. Listen to real opera you morons. Listening to Bryn is like pouring sugar down your throat until you vomit. Does anyone know what an "operatic baritone" really sounds like. Bryn is the emproer with no clothes and you all are fools.

4 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel, the Magnificent, sings 'Something for Everyone'.......2005-06-28

Surely one of the most beautiful baritone voices on the opera stage and in the recital hall today is that of Welshman Bryn Terfel. He is one of those rare artists who has a magnificent voice, intense musicality, and magical stage presence. Terfel could sing the telephone book and make it beautiful.

And sadly that is what this album resembles: the choice of songs and the arrangements and friends with whom he elects to perform raises some concern about his artistic integrity. Having purchased this CD based on hearing 'Toreador Song' from 'Carmen' - clearly the finest, most highly nuanced performance of this famous aria ever sung! - this listener expected a concert of similar arias. Wrong! This is like a summer night at Hollywood Bowl with bits and pieces of all manner of songs, some tasteful, others less so, but whatever Terfel sings it is good to hear his voice.

Some of the more successful tracks include 'Shenandoah', 'Danny Boy', Brahms' 'Lullaby', and a Welsh tune 'Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn' sung in Welsh. But then Terfel opts to sing Tchaikovsky's 'None but the lonely heart' in English rather than Russian, a Disney song (from Lady and the Tramp) in Italian, and for some reason includes duets with a soprano by the sole name of Sissel ('Ave Maria'), an awful pairing with Andrea Bocelli for The Pearl Fishers duet (terrible to compare these two polarized voices!), and some choral and jazz ditties. Whew!

If you can get past the pick and save repertoire here and just relax with Terfel's artistry you are in for a treat. Not for the purists, but definitely a find for the 'crossover crowd'. Grady Harp, June 05

5 out of 5 stars Bryn Terfel's voice is magnificent, this album superb........2005-05-05

I am hoping every possible purchaser of this album will read this review. Bryn Terfel is a singer whose voice has been touched by God. Rich, powerful, masculine, elegant, emotionally moving. His taste in music is varied and wonderful. I listen to him more often than any other vocalist in my vast vocal music collection. Therefore, I get more value out of his CD's than any other I own. If you love great vocal music sung by one of the greatest baritones of all time, buy this CD immediately. It will quickly become one of your treasured favorites. And Mr. Terfel, please know that your voice touches people all around the world. Thank you for the great music and inspiration, Sir.

5 out of 5 stars Popular favorites sung by a fine concert baritone-bass.......2005-04-20

First of all, we have to recognize that Bryn Terfel is one helluva fine concert/operatic baritone with a huge, powerful, and beautiful voice. (I think any other assessment must be based on nit-picking and misses the forest for the trees.)

In the present program we may wonder whether Terfel's particular (and enormous) talent is well matched to the popular selections chosen. Overall, I say yes: Terfel gives fine and generally convincing performances of this widely varied program--and there are precious few (if any) who could do better.

Let's take a look at what's here:

On the famous toreador song from Bizet's "Carmen" Terfel gives a very fine, operatic rendition of the bull-fighter's swaggering, macho aria. His diction in French is faultless and his singing style unreproachable. What more do you want?

In "Shenandoah" Terfel takes on an American folksong, and here is hardly in his home territory. He sings it well, as a concert artist, and perhaps a bit more dramatically than necessary. His pronunciation of American English is very good--except that he's deceived by the "ss" in Missouri and does not give us the "z" sound which every American would. The use of the pipes by Neil Martin adds a lovely, wistful touch to this sentimental bit of lovesick nostagia.

The tender Welsh lovesong is sung in a fine concertish style, but manages to be quite intimate and convincing anyway. Terfel's pronunciation of the (South Wales?) language is perfect, as far as I can detect, and should probably not be taken for granted in this day when English dominates. The harp--mainstay of Welsh folk music--is welcome here as played by the expert fingers of Catrin Finch.

Bizet's well-known Pearl Fishers' duet is operatic territory, and Terfel shines here. Bocelli offers a warm and appealing, though smaller, tenor voice to the combination and the two do a good job overall. Terfel's French is again impeccable.

The lovely setting of the 23rd psalm by Goodall is a welcome bit of church music and the soloist-with-chorus arrangement puts Terfel into a familiar idiom, which he--and the London Voices--make the most of. It's a fine performance and will remind listeners of "The Vicar of Dibley" program on PBS, for which the hymn serves as themesong.

Danny Boy was, I believe, originally in English, though it is one of the best-loved Irish folksongs, so we can't fault Terfel for not singing it in Irish. He sings it well, in spite of its demanding range, and communicates the sad and longing tenderness a father feels for his son about to go off to battle. Terfel's sweet, pianissimo ending is gorgeous, impressive, and most apt.

I don't particularly like the song "Bella Notte," so I won't say much, except that it seems well presented. "Going Home" is performed as a concert piece which owes much more to Dvorak than to the Afro-American spiritual from which it is reportedly derived. Even so, Terfel manages a quite convincing southern American dialect. In the same mood, more or less, we get the spiritual "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," which Terfel and the London Voices bring off well, though not at all in the way a Black church choir would do it.

I won't take space to describe each of the following tracks, as I think the foregoing gives a pretty good idea of what to expect. The folksongs are not what a purist might want in the way of homespun simplicity--they are prettied up in artistic renditions. The concert pieces are very well done and leave little to be desired.

I will comment on only two more: I was not overly happy with the Brahms lullaby ("Wiegenlied"), because it is a bit too dramatic and artsy in style where it should be utterly simple. Still, we have to give T. credit for his excellent German pronunciation and his fine, if not cribside, style of singing.

In "Lazybones" Terfel gives us a thoroughly charming and delightfully bluesy performance of a Hoagy Carmichael song. Against all odds, it shows a warm understanding and affection for this idiom so alien to the hills and valleys of T's Welsh home. I defy anyone not to be charmed and delighted by this piece.

A strong commendation is in order for Chris Hazell's remarkably fine arrangements of most of these works, and the excellence of the performances by the accompanying groups. This is a musically first-class production!

The liner notes are generous, with song texts and photos of the participants in this recording. It is definitely up to Deutsche Grammophon's high standards!

If you like the pieces presented here and would like to hear them performed beautifully by first-class artists in fine arrangements, you should get this recording. With over 74 minutes of music, you'll be getting your money's worth several times over!

3 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-02-25

This is a great CD for someone looking to introduce themselves to Irish Music. However, for the more hardcore Clancy and Makem fans, this disc offers little in the way of new material. There are a few rare versions of songs that you can't get anywhere else (Rising of the Moon-45 RPM Version?, Valley of Knockanure, Johnson's Motor Car), but most have been released on other CD's or record albums. I wish that Columbia would just rerelease some of the classic WHOLE albums on CD, instead of waisting our time on repackaged items. Overall, a good buy, but don't expect anything new.

4 out of 5 stars WHEN THE HARP WAS CRUSHED BENEATH THE CROWN .......2006-04-18

The following review is being used to comment on several of the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem recordings. The obvious musical skills, talent and commitment to craftsmanship of this group during its history need no comment by me. Nor does their commitment to keeping alive the Irish folk tradition. Thus, the criterion for review is whether the works represents the political traditions associated with the historic struggle for independence from the English.

A word. As I developed a quasi- leftist political consciousness in my youth I also, in an unsystematic and for the most part then unconscious manner, developed an interest in what is today is called roots music. Initially this was reflected in my first love-the Blues. During the early sixties, under the influence of Dave Van Ronk at first, then Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the rest I developed an interest in folk music, then at the height of its revival. It is through this process that I came to appreciate the work of the artists under review. This is odd, and I will explain why. I was actually reared on the material presented here by my maternal grandfather, a great supporter of the Irish Republican Army. I gained from him my own romantic attachment to the exploits of the IRA in 1916 and beyond until independence. Although my own political evolution since then has led me away from political support to the IRA I still love the old songs which represent the spirit of Irish national identity and aspirations for national liberation historically suppressed by the bloody English.

A word about the songs presented here. The liner notes included with the CD are helpful here. The songs range in subject from `The Rising of the Moon' at the time of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishman, probably the last time that a united, independent, non-sectarian single Irish state was possible, to `Kevin Barry' and `Sean Treacy' just before the partition in 1921, creating the mess that still confronts us politically today. That said, as these lines are being written we are approaching the 90th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The vision that James Connolly and others of a Social Republic proclaimed at the General Post Office still waits. In short, there is still work to be done, North and South, united or as independent states. Listen to these songs to understand where we have come from and why we still need to fight.

3 out of 5 stars It'll do, but when will Sony release a COMPLETE compilation?.......2000-06-19

Yet another compilation from this seminal Irish folk band's extensive catalogue of 1950s and '60s recordings (almost none have been released on disc), this touches on some lesser known songs that still stand up with the group's best work. But Wrap The Green Flag does nothing for fans who want the entire catalogue on CD, or at least a two-disc compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Wrap the Green Flag Wraps our Hearts.......1999-08-12

Wrap the Green Flag features some of the Clancy's unknown great hits like "Fare thee Well Eniskillen" and others. This album features a stirring version of Bold Fenian Men sung by Tom Clancy. This is absolutely a must-have for Irish music fans.

5 out of 5 stars Rousing rebel songs, and a couple of comic and love songs.......1998-11-22

I have almost every recording the CB and TM ever made, so maybe I'm a little prejudiced . It's hard to resist a CD that has the little heard 1920's IRA comic anthem "Johnson's Motor Car," as well as the stirring "Rising of the Moon," "A Nation Once Again," and the title track. Equally great are the comic and fast-paced "New South Wales" and "Galway Races." One of the things I liked best about this CD, though, were the liner notes, which contained a great deal of biographical information about our boys in knitted wool. If you're already a fan, you'll love this combination of songs, and if you're trying to get someone hooked on the group, this is a great CD to get them wanting to listen to more.

Connecticut-based Green Linnet Records has diligently tended the flame of neo-traditional Celtic music for more than two decades, by far preceding the broad sweep of public acceptance that step-dancing musicals and Enya videos helped generate in the 1990s. While not as vast in scope as the label's 20th Anniversary Collection, Green Linnet's Joyful Noise double-CD package offers a splendid sampler of the cheerier side of the Celtic musical spectrum. Heavy on spirited reels and charming romantic odes, Joyful Noise presents 26 smartly paced tracks from 24 acts (including two each from Altan and Relativity) that nicely showcase the heart-lifting, toe-twitching allure of traditional Irish and Scottish instrumentation and vocals framed in contemporary settings. Tracks of special merit include Patrick Street's percolating, pulsating instrumental for guitar and accordion, "Music for a Found Harmonium," the Celtic bluegrass of Jerry O'Sullivan's "The Chorus Reel/Asmolean House," and the clever wordplay of Andy Stewart's Manus Lunny's "Take Her in Your Arms." A winning compilation, ideal for Green Linnet newcomers. --Terry Wood

A real musical treat and one of my all time favorites. Great Celtic classics sung with modern sensibilities. Whether you are looking for an introduction to this great musical tradition or are adding to your collection, this one is not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A fine compilation of Celtic music.......2000-03-14

This is a delightful collection, a "who's who" in the world of modern Celtic music, and a great place to get started if you're curious about this kind of music. Green Linnet has made sure that the liner notes contain everything you will need to know if you choose to follow up on the music you hear and want to get the titles these pieces came from. I heard Joanie Madden's "Hyne's March" medley on Netradio and it sold me right there: it is truly "joyful noise." My only regret is they don't contain lyrics! Hey, get with it, Green Linnet!

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Wish Every Day Was St. Patrick's Day.......2000-03-06

It wasn't until after I got out of college that I paid much attention to musical genres outside rock 'n' roll. However, during the past twenty five years (as my finances permitted) I began a musical journey which lead me to discover blues, jazz, classical, country, and during the late seventies and early eighties I became fascinated by Celtic music. My favorite artists were the Bothy Band, the Tannahill Weavers, the Battlefield Band, Planxty and Silly Wizard. My collection quickly grew to nearly a hundred titles--all on vinyl.

The CD age has forced me to siwtch formats, but budget restraints prohibit my replacing all of my vinyl LPs with CDs. That's what is so great about this collection. For $13, I get nearly two hours of terrific music by a broad spectrum of the Green Linnet roster. You get the whole gamut of the Celtic experience: ballads, airs, jigs and reels.

This is guaranteed to liven any St. Patrick's Day celebration (and every other day of the year), and if this collection leaves you wanting more, for another $13 you can also get Green Linnet Records "The Twentieth Anniversary Collection." Four hours of Celtic music bliss for under $30--you can't afford not to get these. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Warning, This CD is contagious!!!.......1999-02-21

I have enjoyed the music of the Chieftians for years and I wanted to branch out to other Celtic groups. There are so many groups out there and most record store employee don't know the first thing about Celtic music. I didn't want to risk buying a CD and not like it. So, I picked this Double CD up and I haven't been able put it down in weeks. It is a Best Of...(if you will) from Green Linnet Records. Check out Patrick Street, Seamus Egan, Jerry O'Sullican, Kevin Burke, Andy M. Stewart and Altan. All great songs, all great musicians. This is a must for anyone who loves music in general.

    4 out of 5 stars "It's A Great Day For The Irish".............2004-01-27

"All The Best From Ireland" is a fun, charming and sentimental way to get into the St. Patrick's Day spirit. It's a great mix and fabulous compilation of 20 tracks ranging from spirited numbers that will get your toes to tappin and feet to flying, to sentimental favorites, that you might want to raise a glass to or may even bring a tear to your eye.

Even if you are not Irish, you'll find this to be full of very recognizable and much loved tunes to sing along with or dance to. Included you will find "Danny Boy", "It's A Great Day For The Irish", "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen","If You're Irish Come Into The Parlour", and "Wearin O' The Green"(see track listings for complete list).

With 20 tracks, you'll have enough selection for an entertaining St. Patrick's Day gathering, that can be listened to several times without getting too repetitive. The total time runs about 40-45 minutes. My review is of the audio tape but it is also available on CD.

The music and the vocals are really nice, unfortunately there is no info on the artists. This recording by Madacy is not exactly top of the line, but the music is so charming and so much fun to listen to I hardly noticed, and for the price you can hardly go wrong.

For St. Patricks's Day, or if you just love these favorite Irish tunes, check this one out and maybe a little o' the luck will come your way!...and enjoy...Laurie

It is a good choice of Irish tunes and songs. The Sean O'Neill Band is doing a good job. In listening this CD, I am sure that you will remember many songs or tunes that you have heard when you were just a kid. It is a good CD at an affordable price.

I bought this CD for myself, but now, every time we get in the car, the kids are begging for me to put it on for them. They even know most of the words now.

"The music I desire must be supple enough to adapt itself to the lyrical effusions of the soul and the fantasy of dreams." ~ Claude Debussy (1862-1918) ~

Close your eyes and picture yourself in a faraway place so serene, peaceful and far from the madding crowd as you listen to this soothing and the most relaxing sound you may ever want to hear. These are the greatest, the most breathtakingly beautiful pieces and my all-time classical favorites. Think of the most brilliant classical composers in the early Twentieth Century - Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Ravel and Borodin. Think of one of the respected names in orchestration, Eugene Ormandy conducting the magnificent Philadelphia Orchestra. Think of the eleven mesmerizing collection of classical pieces on this CD. And what do you get? You will experience a one-of-a-kind musical and sentimental journey that would take you in a deep reverie.

Two of my absolute favorite pieces from one of the most brilliant composers in the Romantic Era, Claude Debussy, are highlighted in this compilation - "Reverie" and "Clair De Lune." I could listen to these heavenly pieces endlessly! He was better known for his unique style of Impressionist music and most of his compositions were Nocturnes and Preludes. It has been observed by many musical experts that Debussy's music is the most important creation by a French composer since that of Chopin and he paved the way to a lot of emerging composers in the Modern Era. To me, his most beautiful and par excellence composition is "Reverie."

Listen closely as you delight in the eternal beauty of Rachmaninoff's most famous treasure, "Variation 18 from Rhapsody On A Theme of Paganini," Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake: Act II," featuring Philippe Entremont on piano, Mascagni's "Intermezzo from Cavallaria Rusticana" and Borodin's "Polovetsian Dance No. 2" and "Nocturne: String Quartet No. 2 in D-Major."

"Rodrigo: Adagio" was taken from "Concierto de Aranjuez" and the talents of John Williams on guitar and Louis Rosenblatt on English horn are the main attraction on this spectacular piece.

The two traditional pieces on this superb compilation are "Fantasia on Greensleeves" (from the Opera "Sir John In Love") and "Londonderry Air" (Danny Boy).

Talking about Desert Island CDs - this is one of them. A treat for your ears.

        Very highly recommended!

I have been looking for this CD for the past 6 years. I bought this recording on cassette when I was in college 10 years ago. The music is very soothing and relaxing. Each composition just flows right along with the next. If you are just starting out your classical collection this is the one to buy.
